Congratulations,Sherry Allen!

Sherry's Daisy Award nomination was received from a patient who wrote the following:

From our introduction at the beginning of her shift, until the transition of our leaving Labor and Delivery (emergency c-section, recovery and floor transfer), Sherry went above and beyond civic, diligent and knowledgeable nursing care. Even after the delivery when I was no longer her patient, she was there being loving, sincere, humble and going above and beyond. Words are not sufficient enough to describe her. Nurse Sherry is a great representation of patient advocacy, but most importantly she is a face of kindness, strength and encouragement.

Way to go, Sherry! Keep up the great work!

Happy Pulmonary Rehab Week!

National Pulmonary Rehabilitation Week, March 8th – 14th, celebrates the role of pulmonary rehabilitation in enhancing the quality of life of individuals with lung disease. Chronic lung disease patients depend on respiratory therapists to get them through the acute exacerbations caused by their conditions. However, these patients need respiratory therapists to help them after the acute episode is over as well and this is where pulmonary rehabilitation comes in.

Pulmonary rehab meets two times weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 12 weeks (24 visits) and requires a physician referral. We receive referrals from internal Pulmonologists and primary care physicians, as well as outlying hospitals and physicians. Our program is under the medical supervision of Dr. Carlos Kummerfeldt, Pulmonologist. Pulmonary rehab includes both supervised exercise and individualized education and last approximately 1 – 1.5 hours. Pulmonary rehabilitation cannot cure your lung disease or completely relieve your breathing problems. However, it does have many benefits:

• Improving quality of life• Improving daily function• Increasing ability to exercise• Decreasing the systems of the disease• Helping with management of anxiety and depression

Pulmonary Rehabilitation week activities included decoration of the pulmonary rehabilitation department with informational posters outlining the benefits of pulmonary rehab, as well as tips for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Patients were given a goody bag filled with T..J. items, healthy snacks and a book mark listing benefits gained from pulmonary rehab. Healthy snacks were served and patients were encouraged to wear blue or green last Thursday.
