WEDNESDAYS @ 1:00 PMEVERYONE WELCOME

An immense amount of work has been done over the last 8+ years by volunteers to get the Skate

Park to its current stage, but there is still a lot more to do to bring this project to completion.

There is now an official completed pro-posal and design, a 3D model, and an ap-proved location, which is the empty space of the old outdoor skating rink near the wading pool on Pine Street.

The newest incarnation of the Skate Park Committee is comprised of various interested parties; Village of Chase staff, Project Comeback coordinators, members

from the Youth Action Committee and parents of kids eager to use the park. This committee met once in February to create a preliminary strategy for the future of the project.

The Skate Park Committee can now ap-ply for grant opportunities, and start fund-raising and accepting donations towards the construction phase. This is truly a beautiful thing everyone has accomplished so far, and shows the community is still ea-ger and wants this project for Chase.

A skate park in that location will create activities that the whole community can enjoy and benefit from.

Re: Dick BarnesNeed to correct your writing about Fin-land and Lappland. Indigenous people of (Norway, Sweden, Finland and parts of ex Soviet Union are called SAAMI people, in Finland 8000 Saami speakers.) The Saamis live above arctic circle and have their Saami Language and traditions in common. As well todays world they are independent and this is called (SAAMI KARAJAT). They did use to face discrimination in past.

THE CHASE VOLUNTEER FIRE SERVICE NEEDS YOU!

We are seeking highly-motivated individuals who have a keen interest in firefighting and who would you like a challenging and

rewarding volunteer experience. If you like helping people, appreciate continuous learning, and are physically fit, you may be an ideal candidate.

o Great trainingo Strong sense of accomplishmento Member of the team o Giving back to your community

If you would like to become a member of the Chase Volunteer Fire Rescue con-tact Brian Lauzon at 770.220.3032 or the Village of Chase office 250.679.3238. We are an organization dedicated to saving lives and protecting property.

It is difficult, in this day and age, to find engaging activities for our youth. The lake, playgrounds, skating arena, school activi-ties, camps, sports, programs and such, only seem to go so far in age interest, includ-ing many of these can be quite cost-ly. Throughout all of BC, almost every town, large or small has their own Skate Park. Skate parks are designed to not only engage the kids of all ages, but also for our families, community members, and our whole area in our area to enjoy and benefit from.

If we don’t try to have enough activities, work and benefits in a community as a whole, and to all ages, then the more appealing our neighbouring

cities are. We need to be passionate and en-thusiastic about our families and kids in this community, especially towards the youth. We need our youth supported and active in

a positive way throughout Chase, which in turn would potentially be our future generations keeping Chase alive for years to come.

It is about time we give something back to our youth, especially if we want them to be passionate about the community they live in, to like Chase a little more while they’re here, and may-be live here again in the future to raise their own families. If you would like to donate money, materials,

ideas or support to the cause contact the Village Office.

Marie Vogel runs G-Force Sports and Board Shop and has been involved with the Chase Skate Park project for over 8 years.

Chase Country Quilters would like to extend a big THANK YOU to everyone who supported us through donations and our quilt sales in 2014. We were able to donate financially to Chase Christmas Hamper Society and Chase Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary in memory of Pearl Koemstead. In 2014 we presented quilts to; • Interior Community Services, Chase and Chase Public Health Nurse (39 quilts for newborns from Chase & area);• Chase Rotary Auction • Chase Curling Club • Chase Creekside Seniors • Team Chase Pink Ribbon Fundraiser • Marjo-rie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hos-pice Home, Kamloops (5 quilts)Royal Inland Hospital, Kamloops : Cancer Clinic (8 quilts), Pediatrics (12 quilts), Renal (8 quilts) • along with 21 quilts for community members.THANK YOU to everyone who has do-nated fabric, quilt batting and sewing ma-chines to our club - we continue to use these supplies to make more quilts. If you are interested in donating, view-ing quilts or purchasing quilts please con-tact any quilt club member or call Chris 250-679-5302 or Bev 250-679-2422.

Chase Quilters... Continued In 2014 this group gave away about

130 quilts. Victims of fire receive one. The public health nurse distributes a quilt at each new baby’s first visit. Can-cer, renal, and paediatric clinics at the Royal Inland Hospital receive quilts. [See Thank You on Right for full list...]

Organizations benefit from them to raffle as fundraisers and our Team Chase raffles one each year as a fund-raiser for cancer.

They must be in the for the money.... right! Well, it is true that once a year quilts are exhibited and sold to raise money for materials, batting, backing and thread. Watch for that event! Some-times they get donations of fabric too, no doubt adding to the largesse.

So if spring cleaning reveals a few folds of cloth likely never to be used, pass them on and add to the wealth, be-cause this industrious group will use ev-ery scrap and do some wonderful com-munity work while they are it!

Congratulations to the door prize winner at the Show & Sale at Creekside Seniors Center on October 25, 2014 Joyce Aber-deen of Chase.

I’d have to say dealing with people. Q• What’s the coolest place you’ve been?A • I’d have to say South Africa. That’s the place I want to go back to. I liked seeing the animals, the wildlife in their natural habitat... the big 5 [lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros]Q • What do you think Chase is missing? A • That’s easy - a family style restaurant that’s open in the evenings. Something in where the loft was, where you can take your family out. TEN questions With...

Anti-idle bylaw in the works for ChaseThe Village of Chase Council passed a

resolution at the last meeting directing its Administration to start drafting a “no idling bylaw”, which will go alongside an education campaign.

Such a bylaw could help Chase fulfill its obligations, as a signatory on the Climate Action Charter (2011) to reduce green-house gas emissions.

Some other municipalities that have an-ti-idling bylaws and education campaigns in place include Kelowna, Powell River, Terrace, Clinton, Masset, Sayward, Dun-can, Golden, Kaslo, Gibsons, Whistler, Williams Lake and many others.

Myths and Facts About Idling(From Idlefreebc.ca)

MYTH: Idling uses less gas than restarting the engine. Studies clearly show that idling for over 10 seconds uses more fuel and produces more CO2 emissions than re-starting your engine. The amount of time to offset any potential maintenance costs to the starter or battery is under 60 seconds. So, as a guideline, if a car is stopped for more than 60 seconds the engine should be turned off.

FACT: If Canadians avoided idling for just three minutes every day of the year, CO2 emissions could be reduced by 1.4 million tonnes annually, the equivalent of taking 320,000 cars off the road for the entire year

BOOK REVIEWby Annelise Grube-Cavers

This book is two stories; the narrative of a Native American boy and the history of his estranged father who emerges to take a final journey with his only child. Their journey is not a long one, but through it the reader is transported back and forth through time to see what has led to this turning point. While there is definitely something to learn from this book, some of the characters struck me

as one-dimensional; either all goodness and bravery or all sourness and bad luck. Nevertheless Wagamese has a rich way of weaving stories together, showing the beauty of living with the natural world and the way that nature can help to support us, if we take care of it. This book is also about race and the importance of knowing your own history. I would still recommend this book, but it’s not among my top picks.

attend a huge 60 team, all female hockey tournament, the Richmond Ravens Ice Clas-sic in Richmond, March 20-22. The team raised enough funds for the reg-

wash in the Safety Mart parking (10-2), and hosting the beer gardens at the Men’s Hockey Tournament through the weekend as a fundraiser. They also offered to help out with the Village’s Public Works in exchange for assistance. The Mustangs are made up of girls aged 12-

17. Volunteers of Chase Minor Hockey have worked hard to provide hockey for young girls in Chase and are happy to report they had new players join this season.

You may have noticed the Sunflower delivered around town by bicycle. With this spring-like weath-er bicycling is a no-brainer; it save gas, is fun, good exercise, makes a public spectacle. But with some resourcefulness you can make bikes work for you in most situations and conditions. Here is how we kitted out our trusty paper delivering steed:Bungee

Cord: Holds the lid to keep papers from flying out

“Bar Mitts”: Like easy to slip into mittens that stay on your bike

Kick Stand: A necessity in a town with few bike racks

Vintage Frame: Peugot, Apollo, Raleigh, etc. Don’t take these to the dump when you clean out your shed!

With the KIJHL season wrapped up, the Chase HEAT held their Annual

Banquet and Awards Night. On Satur-day, March 7th at the Adams Lake Rec-reation Centre ,180 parents, billets, fans, volunteers, staff and players congregated. The evening included a delicious roast beef dinner and desserts, a fundraising silent auction, a guest speaker and an awards presentation.

Team Education Coordinator Tom At-kinson MC’d the gala evening with grace and wit. Besides the awards there were two other highlights, Legendary NHLer Guy Charron was the guest speaker and Andrea Stelter showcased a video of the year’s highlights and hilarious out takes of crash and calamity. You can view it on our FB page.

The awards commenced with Andrea Stelter receiving the Volunteer of the Year Award. She is the Society Director of

Broadcasting and Marketing, works with staff on game films, takes all the action photos, develops posters and pamphlets, and volunteers where ever needed.

Director of Hockey Operations Brad Fox presented the many player awards. [See box on right.]

Boyle and Byer as 20 year olds have completed their Junior Hockey Eligi-bility and were presented with framed mementos, personalized travel bags and HEAT golf shirts.

Team Captain Boyle as the KIJHL all time leading power play goal scorer also received a window box from the HEAT Organization with the record breaking puck, a plaque and action photo.

The Chase HEAT once again thank our sponsors, donors, fans, volunteers and most importantly the billet parents for your tireless support in making Chase and the HEAT the place to play and be successful!
