Surprised by Hope by N. T. WrightDiscussion led by Rev. Scott Paul-Bonham & Rev. Lant Davis

at Central Presbyterian ChurchWright convincingly argues that what we believe about life after deathdirectly affects what we believe about life before death. For if God in-

tends to renew the whole creation and it this has already begun in Je-suss resurrection the church cannot stop at saving souls but must

anticipate the eventual renewal by working for Gods kingdom in thewider world, bringing healing and hope in the present life.

THE WAY: WALKING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF JESUSBy Adam Hamilton

Hamilton uses historical information, archaeological data, and stories ofthe faith to follow the footsteps of Jesus from his baptism to the temp-tations to the heart of his ministry, including the people he loved, theparables he taught, the enemies he made, and the healing he brought.

    Lants Lines

From that time Jesus began to proclaim, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has

    come near. (Matthew 4:17 NRSV)

The Gospels according to Matthew, Mark, and Luke all agree that proclaimingthe nearness of Gods realm was part of Jesus basic message. He might say it,

as in the quotation above, in order to urge repentance. On at least one occa-sion he said it just after he had performed a healing miracle. I sometimes won-

der whether we agree with Jesus: is the kingdom of God really near? We may pray the prayer that Je-sus taught us, saying, Your kingdom, Lord, let it come, but in our minds we may be thinking that it isway off somewhereup in heaven. If that is true, however, then why did Jesus say it was near? Per-haps it was because whenever he is present the kingdom is present, too. Of course, that begs thequestion, if he is still present with us (as the Church historically has believed) then isnt the kingdom

present, as well? Or maybe it was simpler than that: maybe the kingdom of God has always been near.

I began thinking along these lines because of the video series we are watching together as a part of our

Sunday night Lenten programming. In the videos Surprised by Hope(and in his book by the same name)noted biblical scholar and theologian N. T. Wright argues that heaven is not up or way out there, but rather is everywhere present on this earthin another dimension but still tangent to all earthlyplaces at once. Thus, after Jesus resurrection, when he ascended to heaven, Wright would say that

Jesus simply passed into that other dimension yet still is fully present with us. According to Revelation21, when the great day of the Lord occurs, heaven will come down to earth. I wonder whether thiswill not be a sort of the same thing in reversethe coming into our dimensions of the heavenly city, which in some sense has been with us all along. Those who think of the kingdom of heaven in this wayoften speak of the thinness of space separating us from the heavenly realm. In high spiritual momentswe may even have the feeling that we are beginning to see through the thinness from our dimensions

    into the heavenly.

Of course, its all a mystery; and I certainly dont have the answers. Yet Lent is a season of the churchyear when we attempt to slow down and focus on God and on Gods will for our lives. We meditateon the sacrificial love of God we see manifest in the life of Jesus the Messiah, and spiritually we seek tobe close to him. When Lenten sadness is over and we have experienced the grief of Good Friday, wewill come at last to a joyous Easter celebration of Jesus resurrection and the promise of our eternal lifewith him. In sadness, grief, and joy, it helps me to think of the kingdom of God being just as near to usas Jesus taught. I pray that we all have some thin moments this month, when the veil between heaven

and earth, between Jesus and us, between the present and the future, is gossamer indeed.

    Volume XXXXX,

The Herald. The edition of the Herald currently being prepared for mailing (describing activities forMarch) is the last edition that will be mailed broadly to our members and friends of the church. Fromthen on, if we have an E-mail address for you, we will send the Herald to that address. Thus,

If you currently are receiving the weekly E-News, then in the future you also will receive the Heraldby E-mail.

If you currently are not receiving the E-News, then the church office probably does not have a cur-rent E-mail address for you. The easiest way to notify us of your E-mail address and to let us knowyou would like to be placed on the E-mail distribution list for the Herald is to send us an E-mail mes-sage [email protected].

You will always be able to view the Herald by going to our church's website, www.thcpc.org. If you have no access to a computer, please contact the church office. We will try to figure out a

way to get the Herald to you.

Seventh Cents Youth GroupFebruary Highlights: 7th Cents youth had an exciting February. We kicked off the month with ourannual Souper Bowl of Caring skit and lunch. Combined, the youth raised almost $1000 in donations andcanned goods! Thank you for supporting the youth ministry in their fight to "tackle" hunger in Terre

Haute. President's Day led to a wonderful opportunity to hold a lock-in. There was not much sleep but agood time was had by all! We also kicked off our new Lenten Series on February 24th. We are using avideo series led by Adam Hamilton. Each video takes us to the actual locations of Jesus ministry! We arelooking forward to digging deeper into the life and ministry of Jesus throughout the rest of the Lentenseason.

March Events: This month we will continue our Lenten Series using Adam Hamilton's "The Way".This month we make our way to Capernaum, the Sea of Galilee, a Samaritan community, and Jerusalem. Our discussions and activities follow the life and death of Christ as we prepare for Easter. I hope all 6th-12th graders and their friends will be able to join us for this exciting video study! Supper is being servedat both Centenary and Central, but this month our study will be held at Central. If you have any ques-
