There is another NE Chapter Challenge opportunity on Sunday, March 16th, at the Legion in Pierce, NE. Bill and Nancy will be presenting at least 3 seminars to GWRRA members. Remember if we go to another chapter we will get extra points. If you did not notice, some members have lettering on the back of their chapter shirts stating the year that they were Chapter Couple of the Year. This is something that we are going to do as a chapter. Just a note on our fund raiser at Buffalo Wild Wings last month - We received a check for $57.35 for enjoying a nice night out with family and friends. We are planning another fund raiser sometime later in the year. Again, thanks to all that participated. Les and Janie’s dinner ride will be March 18th 6 P.M. at the New Cilantro's 114 & Dodge. This is a new location for Cilantro’s and a great place to eat. We will have two dinner runs next month, one sponsored by Al and Alma Scranton and the other dinner run will be sponsored by Gary and Jan. I’m almost afraid to say anything about the weather as it might change over night and start snowing again. As I am not allowed to ride yet (because of my surgery) I have had a number of phone calls stating how nice it was to ride Sunday and Monday!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT ARE FRIENDS FOR? Just because I can’t ride, I’m glad some had the chance to get out. At our next month's meeting we'll have a guest speaker presenting what to do to get your bike ready for the riding season. Have you seen this sign lately?

It seems to be popping up everywhere. Years ago there was a Clint Eastwood movie titled “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”. This fuel additive may fall into one of those categories. Which category do you think it falls under? We have seen this notice on gas pumps for years. It has normally been placed next to the Mid-Grade fuel and because of this, that particular grade was generally cheaper than pure gasoline. Many of us used it in our vehicles as a result because gas is expensive. What do we get from this ethanol blend? The fuel blend was a little cheaper than regular gasoline because it is cheaper to refine and process. I say “was” because the mid-grade is no longer cheaper than regular. Ethanol became the volatile solution of choice after we discovered that the previous chemical we blended with gasoline, “Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE)”, was especially harmful to many things. It was replaced by an ethanol blend called Gasohol. Ethanol is a naturally produced and therefore renewable bio-fuel additive. It is generally made from corn, sugar cane and other starchy products which provide income for our farmers who grow these crops. We primarily use corn in the United States. Brazil, for example uses mostly sugar cane. Ethanol does not burn with the same intensity as gasoline so when it is blended we get a little less energy per gallon and consequently somewhat poorer fuel mileage on the average. In some engines it was thought to be harmful. Not only was the energy level somewhat lower but the ethanol

May contain up to 10% Ethanol

tended to react with gaskets, hoses and other components resulting in shorter lifespans. Ethanol is agroscopic or miscible with water (will mix with) and can lead to corrosion. The ethanol blend has been limited to 10% (E10) by government regulation. Recently there has been a push to increase the mandated maximum percentage. In older vehicles, (we are generally talking about pre-year 2000) ethanol may have contributed to some problems with valves and carburetors. Vehicle manufacturers adjusted their products to be able to accept this E10 blend without any deleterious effects since the beginning of this century. We can use it in our Gold Wings. Yes the lower energy still yields somewhat poorer mileage (3-4% less per gallon). Within the last few years we have seen flex-fuel vehicles produced that can operate on a fuel blend of up to 85% ethanol (E85 – generally not above 83%). There have even been test vehicles designed to use and burn used cooking oil. We used to joke about the US Navy P-3’s Allison Turboprop engines, saying that they would probably burn oily rags if you fed that to them as fuel. Of course, I would want to skip that flight. Lately we have been seeing these 10% ethanol signs on the Regular Grade fuel and in some cases even on premium grade in addition to mid-grade. There is a move afoot to allow an increase in the ethanol blend composition up to 15% (E15). Our Gold Wing motorcycles (newer models) should have no difficulty ingesting the 10% blend however the 15% blend is something else again. As the ratio starts creeping up we may start to see more issues arise that affect system components. In fact most motorcycle magazines and forums will recommend that we stay away from and not use the 15% blend. The jury is still out and I would advise anyone contemplating use of ethanol blends in their motorcycles to read as much as they can and decide whether you want to use this fuel. We may not have a choice in the near future as all fuels become blends. The owner’s manual for the 2012 GL1800/A discusses oxygenated fuels such as ethanol, MTBE and methanol, saying that you may use Gasoline containing up to:

• 10% Ethanol by volume • 15% MTBE by volume • 5% Methanol by volume

It goes on to say: “Fuel system damage or performance problems resulting from the use of an oxygenated fuel containing more than the percentage of oxygenates mentioned above are not covered by warranty.” HMMM!

So what about the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly?

If you grow corn and sell your crop to an ethanol producer this is Good! If you have an older motorcycle and use the blended fuel this may be Bad! If the blend ratio of ethanol and gasoline is raised to 15% this may be Ugly!

As more testing is done and we find out the effects this new blend produces we will be able to make a more informed decision. Who, knows, maybe engines that burn, diesel fuel, liquefied natural gas (LNG), have hydrogen fuel cells, or even electric will be in our Gold Wing’s future. Time will tell. Read through the sources below (there are many more) to see how contentious this issue is. Sources: 2012 Honda GL 1800 Owner’s Manual; 31MCA700, 00X31-MCA-7000

Answer: The Gold Wing Road Riders Association has been teaching and promoting motorcycle safety since its founding on June 4, 1977. The earliest newsletters of the small group that met monthly at a local restaurant and coffee shop in Phoenix, Arizona featured guest speakers on safety topics including a motorcycle policeman. When the original charter for GWRRA was established, the only motorcycle organization endorsed by GWRRA was the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) for its efforts in making family motorcycling a safer, more enjoyable pastime. The first “Safety Director” for that group of GWRRA Members (as listed in the April 1978 issue of “Wing News”) was Gary Gardner. By December, Dave Van de Water had taken over as “Safety Information Officer”. (Dave’s contributions to GWRRA’s earliest history were many, including the development of the first GWRRA logo by one of his company’s graphic artists.) March 2014 Rider Ed Question of the Month Level II of the Rider Education Levels Program is titled “Safety by Education”. At this Level both the Rider and the Co-Rider are required to increase their riding knowledge and riding skill levels by accomplishing what? How many safe miles must each have accrued? Bob Robert G. District Rally June 19-21 2014, Quality Inn/Ogallala NE With plenty of attractions and lots of great riding, western Nebraska is the diamond in the rough. Spend some time at the rally then check out all the area has to offer. This could be the start of a great summer vacation, being only a few hours from Colorado and Wyoming. Did you know? Ogallala is Nebraska’s ‘Cowboy Capital’? Named for the Oglala band of Dakota Sioux and located on the Union Pacific Railroad, Ogallala was a lusty cowtown of the Old West. During the summer months, at least 10 to 12 herds, each of 2,500 head of cattle, could usually be located south of the town. The floaters, gamblers, trades people and dancehall hostesses, who made up a large portion of Ogallala’s mobile population, drifted off to Omaha or Cheyenne to spend the winter. The word Oglala means to “scatter one’s own.” So start planning your vacation today. It begins at the NE/SD District Rally in Ogallala NE. Limited amount of rooms (including pet friendly) are now available for reservation by calling 308-284-3623. Rooms are $69.95 per night and include a discount coupon for the Denny’s restaurant on site. Deadline for discounted room registration is June 1st. Check out the hotel website here. Let them know you are with the GWRRA District Rally for special rates. Schedule of events will be available in the near future. Hope to see you at these Fun events!
