Volunteer Coaches Needed for

‘Learn Bridge In a DAY?’Patty Tucker, with Whirlwind Bridge, will host

Learn Bridge In a DAY on Sunday, March 15 from 1 to 6 p.m. This event is for individuals with no bridge experience or those who have played social bridge and are interested in learning more about duplicate.

The event requires a coach at every table to help participants follow the lesson. We’re looking for volunteers to be table coaches. Even ACBL members with just 5 masterpoints will enjoy coaching. A large attendance is expected, so the more table coaches available, the better. This is a great opportunity for local club managers and teachers to network with some of their future members.

You oughta be in picturesACBL has retained a professional

photographer to update images for our publications and website. We are looking for you – Hall of Famers, NABC winners, tournament staff, Grand Life Masters, soon-to-be Grand Life Masters and Platinum Life Masters, Bulletin contributors, I/N speakers, etc.

On Monday, March 16 from 4 to 8 p.m., the photographer will be located in the Jackson room on the 5th floor. Please try to look nice. If you’ve had your photograph taken at one of the past three NABCs, you are off the hook for now.

Questions? Email the Daily Bulletin folks at [email protected].

Playing in an NABC+ pairs game? Please buy your

entry early!NABC+ pairs events requires time to allow

for proper seeding. The ACBL asks participants to please buy entries at least 15 minutes before game time. This is especially true if you expect to be a seeded pair.

Avoid the lines by buying your entry online. Go to BridgeWinners.com – your initial transaction extends as long as your pair or team remains in the event and you pay only the cost of the entry – there is no service charge.

Smoking PolicySmoking is not permitted in the playing area

during any bridge playing event at an NBAC. This includes electronic smoking devices.

Masterpoint disclaimerScores as reported in the Daily Bulletin are

subject to change because of score changes or corrections. The masterpoint awards as shown are, therefore, also subject to change.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSGood Behavior

By Brent Manley

Kathy Feiock of Baltimore reported that in a Swiss teams event, her partner was having a tough day, so she told him to relax and “just have fun.” At the start of a subsequent round, Feiock told the opponents, “We are trying out a new system – we’re going to have a good time.” Without batting an eye, one of the opponents retorted, “Do you have a suggested defense to that system?”

If you have read these columns in other Daily Bulletins, you know that I always start off with a funny story to remind the readers that bridge is supposed to be fun.

In more than 40 years of playing bridge, I have encountered some who apparently are not familiar with that concept.

This is less of a problem in newcomer games, but I like to start this series of articles by urging you to hone your partnership skills so that everyone – you, your partner and your opponents – have a good time while playing the best game ever.

I have covered bridge at high levels – NABCs, world championships and tournaments in Europe – for a quarter of a century, and I can tell you that the best, most effective partnerships are, first and foremost, true partners. They know their partners function best in a supportive, respectful environment.

At a world championship a couple of years ago, one of the top pairs in the world recorded minus 1400 at a critical time in a key match. Not one word was spoken about the result. What would be the point? Nothing could be done about what happened.

Most of us will never play as well as these champions, but you can emulate their partnership skills by keeping your mouth shut.

If you find yourself inclined to comment on partner’s unfortunate opening lead or his failure to make a lay-down contract, think about how you would feel if it was you who made the mistake and partner jumped on you about it.

Do you think your mind would be clear when you pulled the cards out of the next board? Or would you be thinking of something sharp to say to partner about his mistakes? Maybe you would be thinking that partner’s comments were erroneous and you want to set him straight.

With all that going through your mind, how do you think you’ll do with the 13 cards you are now holding?

Now think about how you would feel if your poor opening lead allowed the opponents to make a doubled contract and the comment from the other side of the table was, “Bad luck, partner. I would have made the same lead.” Big difference, eh?

Discussion is important to the success of a partnership, but it must not take place in the middle of the game.

If something goes wrong and you feel it should be discussed, make a note in your convention card and put it out of your mind. Most games these days have hand records, so there’s no need to worry about forgetting your hand. Discussion away from the heat of battle will go much more smoothly, keeping both members of the partnership happy.

Make good partnership skills a priority in your

Thinking BridgeBy Eddie Kantar

Using the bidding as a guide to play and defense – part 1 Dlr: West ♠ Q 10 8 Vul: N-S ♥ 5 2 ♦ A Q 10 9 ♣ A Q 9 5 ♠ K 7 ♠ 6 5 4 3 2 ♥ A J 8 7 4 3 ♥ 10 6 ♦ 8 6 4 ♦ 7 3 2 ♣ 7 4 ♣ K 8 6 ♠ A J 9 ♥ K Q 9 ♦ K J 5 ♣ J 10 3 2

West North East South 2♥ Dbl Pass 3NT All Pass

Opening lead: ♥7 (fourth best).Bidding commentary: Nothing unusual.

North would have liked to have four spades for the double, but if you always wait for the perfect hand, you spend half your life waiting.

Play commentary: The bidding tells you that West has six hearts and the Rule of 11 tells you that East has one heart higher than the 7: the 10. Ergo, East started with ♥10 x. As the club finesse goes into East, duck the first heart. Assuming East returns the suit at trick two, it is now safe to finesse into East to ensure nine tricks because East is out of hearts.

Defensive commentary: Say declarer errs by winning the first heart, crosses to a diamond and takes a losing spade finesse. As West, after winning the ♠K, looking at the ♥J, you know that partner played his highest heart and, furthermore, the play of the ♥10 denies the ♥9. So declarer remains with the ♥Q 9. Translation: Don’t cash the ♥A hoping the queen will drop. In fact, if you lead any card in your hand other than a heart, declarer fails as the club finesse is needed for a ninth trick and it doesn’t work.

your finesses be successful!

National Appeals Committee meeting

There will be a meeting of the National Appeals Committee on Friday, March 13 at 11 p.m. in Balcony K at the Marriott.

Baldwin North American Pairs, Flight A

The Baldwin North American Pairs, Flight A is a grassroots event that began last summer at the local club level. Qualifiers at the club level advanced to unit competition and those qualifiers advanced to district finals. Three pairs from each district — more, depending upon attendance — qualified for the North American final.

Winners have their names inscribed on the Baldwin Memorial Trophy and also receive certificates of recognition.

The trophy is presented in memory of Col. Russell J. Baldwin (1889–1969), U.S. Army officer and expert on tournament procedure who was ACBL Honorary Member of the Year in 1943.

Baldwin was active as an organizer from the earliest days of contract bridge. He became a director of the American Bridge League and its treasurer shortly after its founding in 1927. He was a member of the ACBL Laws Commission and primarily responsible for the first Duplicate Code issued in 1935.

Baldwin was active as a tournament director

from 1927 until 1941. After service in World War II, he was ACBL business manager from 1946 until 1951.

He was recalled to military serve at the outbreak of the Korean War and retired from the U.S. Army in 1957. He rejoined ACBL in 1958 and was in charge of tournament scheduling until his retirement in 1963.Previous winners:1979 Arthur Moore, Eric Robinson1980 Bob Feller, Jeffrey Hall1981 Helen Blakey, Robert Blakey1982 Bill Nuttig, Ivan Scope1983 John Griscom, Jim Felts1984 Steve Sion, Harold Stengel1985 Peter Boyd, Steve Robinson1986 Drew Cannell, G. Be Scent-sitive!Some people have an extreme sensitivity to

fragrances (colognes or perfumes). Many ACBL clubs, units and districts have adopted policies that prohibit players from wearing fragrances. The

ACBL has not issued an official policy on the matter, preferring instead to appeal to the goodwill of its members to refrain from using fragrances.

Because duplicate bridge requires players to be in close proximity to each other, individuals who suffer from fragrance-related reactions cannot avoid those who are wearing them. Among the commonly reported symptoms are intense headaches (indeed, fragrances can frequently be a trigger for migraine sufferers) or breathing-related problems. For these individuals, the issue is much more serious than simply disliking a particular smell — it’s a real health problem.

The ACBL asks everyone to give this issue the consideration it deserves. Please, if you’re going to play in a club or a tournament, don’t wear cologne, perfume or scented lotions.

Electronic Device Policy The electronic device policy

at NABCs allows players to bring electronic devices such as cell phones into the playing area provided that such devices are turned off.

Further, any such equipment must not be visible during the session

The policy applies to all pairs, team members, captains, coaches, kibitzers and play recorders, except those designated by the ACBL and are in force throughout any actual playing session or segment of play.

A violation of the policy will result in an automatic disciplinary penalty of one full board (or 12 IMPs at that form of scoring) for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy will be removed from the playing area for the remainder of the session.

Norman Kay Platinum Pairs begins today

The six-session Norman Kay Platinum Pairs gets underway today.

Eligible players are paid-up ACBL members who meet one of the following criteria: have earned 50 platinum masterpoints over the three calendar years prior; earned at least 200 platinum points lifetime, or have attained Platinum Life Master or Grand Life Master rank. No exemptions will be granted for this event.

The event honors Norman Kay, who was named ACBL’s top performance player for the double decade 1957–1977. Partnered by Sidney Silodor (who died in 1963) and later by Edgar Kaplan, Kay had 13 major wins in those 20 years: two Spingolds, four Vanderbilts, four Reisingers, one Blue Ribbon and two Open Pairs. He was a World Bridge Federation Life Master who placed second in the Bermuda Bowl in 1961 and 1967, and second in the World Olympiad Teams in 1968 and third in 1960.

An ACBL Grand Life Master with more than 13,000 masterpoints, Kay won the McKenney Trophy (now the Barry Crane Top 500) in 1955. His North American championships outside the 20-year window include four additional wins in the Vanderbilt and three in the Reisinger.

2010 Andrew Stark, Franco Baseggio2011 Joel Wooldridge, John Hurd2012 Bob Hamman, Justin Lall2013 Martin Fleisher, Michael Kamil2014 Richard Coren, Robert Levin

Richard Coren and Bobby Levin won the Platinum Pairs last year.

IMP Pairs begins todayThe four-session IMP Pairs – two qualifying

sessions followed by two final sessions – gets underway today with the Lebhar Trophy at stake.

The trophy was donated by Bertram Lebhar Jr. in 1948 in memory of his wife, Evelyn. The trophy was previously given to winners of the Mixed Teams but re-designated for the IMP Pairs by the ACBL Board of Directors.

Lebhar (1907-1972), under the name of Bert Lee, earned a national reputation as a sportscaster and later as a bridge player and administrator. In private life, he owned radio and television stations in Florida. He was one of the founders of the Greater New York Bridge Association and was elected its first president in 1948.

The 2014 Lebhar IMP Pairs winners were Radu Nistor and Iulian Christian.

Lebhar was also a player: He won the Spingold in 1940 and the Master Mixed Teams in 1946. His team was his wife Evelyn along with Samuel Katz and Alicia Kemper.

Entry FeesPlayers must be ACBL members whose service

fees or dues are current in order to compete in any of the following national-ranked events: Kay Platinum Pairs, Silodor Open Pairs, Vanderbilt Knockout Teams, Leventritt Silver Ribbon Pairs, Rockwell Mixed Pairs, Lebhar IMP Pairs, Smith Life Master Women’s Pairs, NABC+ Fast Pairs, Jacoby Open Swiss Teams, and the Machlin Women’s Swiss Teams.

The entry fees for these NABC+ contests are $20 per player per session. For NABC+ events when screens are in use, the entry fee will be $30

per player per session. Note: $1.50 per person per session benefits the International Fund.

Players must also be current ACBL members to play in the 0-10,000 Swiss Teams and the 0-10,000 Knockout Teams. The entry fee is $17 per player per session.

Regional championships are $16 per player per session for ACBL members, $20 for non-members.

All other events are $15 per player per session for ACBL members, $19 for non-members. (Note: There is no entry fee for any flight of the North American Pairs, but participants who have qualified to play in these events are still required to be paid members.)

and pencils possess strong magic. “Never use a red pen,” insists Norberto Bocchi

(in Italian). One of those who claims she’s not usually

superstitious, Karen Walker says, “I have a thing about the pens I use to write results in my private score card. I carry several, and after a good session I make sure I use the same pen for the next session. If I have a few bad boards in a row, I change pens in an attempt to break the streak of ‘bad luck.’”

Lynn Deas says that in a long event such as a KO, she gets attached to a specific pen “and I must use the same pen every day.”Numbers and directions

A number of players mentioned directional “preferences” (not superstitions, mind you).

Daniel Korbel says he used to sit East until he had a sponsor who insisted on sitting East. “We did very well in a few events and I got used to sitting West. Then we accidentally sat in the wrong direction – he sat West and I sat East – and we had a terrible game.”

Michael Rosenberg always tries to sit East and North, “not due to any superstition, but because if I pick up a hand record months later, I have a better chance of remembering the results.”

Larry Sealy doesn’t like to sit West. “The last time I sat West was in 2001, I think.” He also doesn’t like to shuffle a board when vulnerability is infavorable for his side. “This comes from my early days as a more adventurous preemptor.”

Jill Meyers avoids section A. “Having lunch with my non-bridge playing friend, Paula, before a tournament also brings me luck.”

“It’s not quite a superstition,” Bart Bramley says, but I have a strong directional preference for East because I sat East in the very first duplicate session I ever played (1965) and I liked it. But I can sit West if I have to.”

Another of Bart’s “not quite a superstitions” is SDAM. “SDAM means ‘six diamonds always makes’. It’s on my convention card. I’ve been playing it since college in the late ‘60s.” A whole group of Bart’s MIT college friends were believers in SDAM. “I can provide many examples of the power of SDAM.”

Peg Kaplan likes 13. “Oddly enough, the number 13 brings me good luck! I won my first regional event starting at table 13, and often get good results on that board, too.”

Joel Wooldridge says that collecting 800 brings him good luck. “What do I try to avoid? Going for 800.”Clothes matter

Larry Cohen recalls a Spring NABC when he and David Berkowitz were not doing so well in a pair game. Matthew Granovetter invited Larry to Friday night Kiddush, an invitation Larry declined.

“But I did tell him that if David and I won the event, I might consider coming the following weekend.” They won the pair event.

“The following weekend, we had reached the semifinals of the Vanderbilt. Matthew invited me

Tomorrow’s Bridge Events

Today is Jane DeMontluzin Memorial Day.

Jane was born in Memphis. After earning a master’s degree in psychology from Radford University in Virginia, she pursued a career in human resources.

Jane moved to the Big Easy to be near her sister. Shortly after relocating, she called the Louisiana Bridge Association center to inquire about the game schedule. Doug DeMontluzin, took the call. You can figure out the rest of that story!

Janie combined her love of bridge with her love of teaching to become a teacher and director. Her students were introduced to the logic and

elegance and logic of bridge through Jane’s organized approach and joyful delivery

Jane died last year. She lived, loved, learned and left a legacy of kindness to her spouse, family, friends and students.

Sponsored events today include the John Onstott Stratified Open Pairs and the Edward Madden Memorial Newcomer Pairs.

John Onstott is a Grand Life Master with more than 25,000 masterpoints. His has been involved in New Orleans bridge since the 1970s. He co-chaired the 1983 NABC in New Orleans and serves as the honorary chair of this 2015 tournament. He was vice president of the LBA and

he sat on the ACBL Board of Governors 1981–1987.

John’s international success include winning the World Team Senior Bowl in 2001 (Paris) and the Senior International Cup at the World Team Olympiad in 2004 (Istanbul). Other accomplishments include winning the North American Swiss Teams in 1998 and the Central American Championship Open Pairs, and finishing second in the Spingold in 1999, the North American Swiss Teams in 1983 and the Grand National Teams in 1987 and 1997.

Edward Madden is the late husband of local stalwart Jackie Madden.

again for Kiddush. I refused again, but this time I made him a promise. I said, ‘Matthew, if we win our semifinal match (we were trailing at the half), I promise I will wear your big black religious hat for the first quarter of the final.’

Cohen says they won the semifinal match and, as promised, showed up the next day wearing the hat. “My team captain saw it and had a fit! ‘That hat is bad luck. Take it off.’ I took off the hat and we lost the match.”

Matt Granovetter harbors a superstition of his own: “If you can’t find the bid you want in the bidding box, bid something else.”

George Jacobs eyes another “bridge prop”: “I am superstitious about letting Claude touch the Bridge Mates.”

A softer, kinder Claude says, “Playing with George, I need all the luck I can get. So what I do is wear the green coat I wore when we had our first victory.”

Kerri Sanborn says that when she and Jack Zhao played the World Mixed Pairs in Sanya, he wore the same shirt for the whole event. “And it didn’t even smell bad when we were finished.”

Sylvia Shi brings a touch of class to the table. “I change my nail polish color for each event.”

Bobby Levin says he has many superstitions. “I will always change clothes between sessions when I feel unlucky or play like a moron. For the

Vanderbilt, you can be sure I will be wearing the lucky Northwestern sweatshirt I wore last year.”

Partner Steve Weinstein doesn’t feel as strongly as Bobby about any of that. “Bobby and I had a big game in a session of the Cavendish, and took the lead in the event. Bobby’s mom, Sheila was kibitzing. When I came down to the game for the next session freshly showered and wearing a crisp new shirt, their jaws dropped in shock. After stunned silence, Sheila was finally able to say, ‘You changed your lucky shirt …’ I replied, ‘When I die, I will have a whole closet of lucky shirts.’ I also plan to get to 100 lucky hats!”

As for Bob Hamman? Here’s his take: “If you play bad bridge, you will lose.”

The Past Comes AliveDutch players Frank van Wezel and Hans van

de Konijnenberg collect books, magazines and Daily Bulletins about bridge. They especially enjoy reading Daily Bulletins from the pre-Internet era. These periodicals are a treasure trove of wonderful photographs, marvelous sketches, splendid deals and tremendous stories and anecdotes.

Van Wezel and van de Konijnenberg decided that this material should be at the disposal of all bridge players. At the same time, they want to save the history of bridge from oblivion. Therefore they launched a free website: www.bridgedailybulletins.nl

On this site you may find thousands of bulletins, both from the digital era and before.

WBF, EBL and ACBL championship bulletins are posted, as well as many from miscellaneous tournaments around the world.

If you have bulletins that they are missing, please contact them. Contact details can be found on the website.

Youth and Junior entriesCoupons will be made available for junior

members in good standing for entry into events at NABCs:1. Any player under the age of 26 years who

is a full-time student (must provide proof of eligibility) will be entitled to coupons that can be used for any event. These coupons will have a value of $10 per session.

2. Any player under the age of 21 years will be entitled to coupons that can be used for any event. These coupons will have a value of $10 per session.

3. Any player 19 years and under will be granted free plays for each session of regionally rated events.

Notice to playersEach player must have an ACBL convention

card filled out and on the table. Please note that other types of convention cards, such as the WBF convention card or homemade cards that do not sufficiently resemble the ACBL convention card, are not acceptable substitutes.
