LAKEWOOD — Adam Mc Kenzie won his first ABTA title in an exciting game as he came through, and won a thriller win over a red hot Roland Escarces taking home a nice $2,375 top prize. Adam won it from the top seeded position.

The scoring was very goood on the house shot at CAL. Making the cut were Men +94 and the la-dies +57 also Super Seniors added to the board were Janice Meloon, Larry Gilbert, and John Ready.

Gina Velarde really liked the shot as she fired a perfect game in the Noon (First Squad) becoming the second lady in ABTA history to do so. We are quite proud of Gina who has become a great bowler. She will receive a Nice Jacket and awards for her fine feat. Gina Is Perfect Congratulations from all! Terry Chatreau also had a perfect game in 1990 at Colima Lanes Time flies :-)

A great turnout of 224 bowlers (4 Squads) saw 56 Semifinalists take the floor, of which all would cash and the top 16 to advance to the single elim finals with 3 wom-en min guaranteed to the top 16.

The scoring was great as Adam Mc Kenzie struck to an enormous +214 to lead the field and in second was John Gonzales +169. Adam will sit out and bowl for the title. John to enter into the second round of the top 16 finals. It took men +82, and ladies +67 to make the top 16 Single Elims at CAL.

The first round we had Rick Lallanetta, Leny Urutia, Cecilia Lung, Bill Nord, Ray Grabinski, David Godinez, and Danny Gue-varra, They received checks of $110 each in 10-16th places.

Round two had Alejandro Vela, Steven Smith, Wilson Ch-eung and John Gonzales lose out. They got checks of $115 in 6-9th places.

Round three saw Roland Es-carces edge Vic Fabian 212-197.A pretty Newcomer Sun Mi Chang got to Alan Basto 234-197. They cashed in 4th and 5th and $130

each. The semi final match was on. Roland Escarces and Sun Mi had a great match with Roland finishing strong edging the pretty lady 213-193. Sun Mi was 3rd and $275 at CAL with fine bowling and Roland off to the title game showdown with Adam Mc Ken-zie.

The title game was on. Roland led off and after three frames both were clean, but Roland opened up a 16 pin lead with a turkey in frames 3-4-5. Now the pressure on Adam who was clean for five frames. He answered the call with a huge four-bagger in frames 6-7-8-9- to regain the lead, but whiffed the 4 pin in the 10th to fin-ish 216/242 . It was now a chance for Roland to win it all with a double. Roland had gotten tapped in the 9th with a solid 7 pin so he needs a double in the 10th. He flushed a great strike on the first one and now needing another for the title came up just a bit high and with a 7 count with 217/237. The title went to the Big Gentleman from Bellflower and deservedly so. Also a nice top prize of $2,375 including the extra perks of being a bowler with 29 squads bowled in a calendar year, and the Cash n Carry bonus. A great exciting win by a fine Gentleman. Adam bowls with us most often. He is Most deserving. Congrats again! A title Well-deserved.

Great bowling by Roland Es-carces who came so close. Sung Yi Chang, 3rd bowled well also and almost got to the title game.

ABTA Notes: Tourney Hi Qualifiers were Francis Colian who fired a huge +186, and the Ladies were led by Gina”300” Velarde +157. They will get paid entries for the fine bowling.

The Doubles were headed by Minh Dang and Jun Cadenas 1511 for $200. Minh teamed with Tim Tran 1461 $180. Dennis Cordero 1457 $150, in 3rd. We paid 21 places and $2,000 in the doubles.

Elmer Ferrer was drawn for the Hot Shot pot and he made it pay off getting the two 9’s or bet-

ter and taking home a tidy $125. He is most deserving, and lovely wife Connie also bowls with the ABTA.

The Match Game was UN-matched at CAL due to a 291 game drawn by Mc Kenzie. So we again will have a $3,500 Match Game this week at West Covina Lanes and already a $ carryover which will be added this week.

The Match Series was NOT Matched at CAL. 547 was not matched so with the $372 carry over we estimate a $750 Match Series this week. This $2.00 pot is very poplular in the ABTA.

The 3-6-9 was NOT hit either as Greg Velarde outlasted the field but missed in shot 4 so we go for $2,100 at West Covina this Satur-day Folks!

Adam Mc Kenzie hails from Bellflower, and used a Quantum Raven drilled by Memo Rosales. He is married to a lovely lady Imelda and has two kids Ariana, and Isaac. Adam thanks wife and kids for putting up with his bowl-ing!

Roland Escarces a valued ABTA Supporter is from Simi Valley and used a Columbia Wrath drilled by Fred Berger at Simi Brunswick Bowl. He is married to a fine lady Marilyn with Jo, William, Ricky, and Myla. He thanks the ABTA staff and bowl-ers. Thanks to all for making the sport fun. He holds the distinc-tion of bringing 7 (count em) “7” new members to ONE tournament. He is a great Guy!

Sun Mi Chang is from Harbor City and brought to the ABTA by our pretty faithful member You-na Yun. She used a Jolt drilled by Gerald at Action Lanes.. She thanks Mom Haeyon , and Youna, Charlie, Irene, Walter, Henry and Bob Smith for joining the ABTA.

It was great to return to CAL where the Staff is great and we are always treated well there. 9 new members signed up with us there. First time cashers were SunMi Chang, John Ready, and Jimmy Deriada.

Special Thanks to Leonard, and Staff. We return there March 7. It is History folks as Glen Dantes enters the archives as our latest champion at CAL BOWL.

USBC Town Hall Meeting Informative

by B.A. Campbell

LOS ANGELES—The USBC Town Hall meeting held in Los Angeles on March 7th was interesting, not only because of what was discussed, but also how many weren’t there. Kudos to the long-distance travelers of the day, the San Diego USBC. San Diego not only made an appearance, they stole the show with seven attendees. Also present were San Gabriel Valley, Los An-geles, Santa Barbara, Orange County, and several bowlers from the L.A./Camarillo/Ventura area. Thanks to USBC National rep-resentatives Bob Schoneman, Roger Stewart and Barbara Chris-man for coming out here to respond to questions and concerns from local associations, as well as give us a heads-up for the new ideas for the 2009-2010 season.

It’s no secret that USBC membership has dropped across time. Adult membership is down over 5% season-to-date, and youth bowling is down over 10% for the same period. The National governing board as well as various committees have come up with new programs designed to draw in new bowlers as well as give more value to those of us currently holding a USBC card.

Youth Bowling is adding a new lower-level Basic member-ship, as well as teaming up with the Bowling Proprietors to pres-ent Bowlopolis, an animated feature plus bowling tie-in for 12 and under. The big change for Youth is the lowering of the eli-gibility age for the Youth division, from 22 to 20. Adult bowl-ing is developing a new “Virtual Bowling” adult membership for open-play bowlers, possibly for late 2009, which would be a non-certified “virtual competition.” Adult Standard Member-ship now includes access to the Perkspot affinity program, which gives members discounts with over 250 retailers. Adult awards have been restructured. There are still rings for 300 game, 800 or 900 series. Depending on bowler’s average, other awards are given as magnets, suitable for refrigerator or other metal surface. The 11-in-a-row award is being redesigned.

Other news from the Town Hall meeting: Bowl.com is going through a redesign for easier access to information, it may be ready by August. The move to Arlington is still progressing; as of the Town Hall meeting date, the national Call Center was still in Wisconsin; regardless, all calls through the center are routed to the appropriate department. Due to economic forces, the USBC is holding onto the old property in Greendale, WI, for the near future. Staffing of USBC in Arlington has decreased 29% from the Greendale period; most is due to the integration of USBC and BPAA departments such as Human Resources and Finance. About 40 employees were transfers from Wisconsin, the rest were new hires.

USBC plans on having Town Hall meetings next year. Note to National USBC: Pick somewhere else for the next Southern California Town Hall meeting, preferably not near the spaghetti roads and crazy costly parking of the L.A. Airport area. We have ideas...

Just When You’veHeard It All!

by Carol Mancini DOWNEY — The Monday day Deskman at Del Rio Lanes, took his usual position for ad-vancing customers, put them on the lanes and checked the clock on the wall to see if the “special” was in effect. What happened to the clock? It was smaller, the hands were barely visible and it looked old and dusty! “Deskman” called the Me-chanic to the desk. The con-versation went something like this (Loose translation since the mechanic is short on English): Deskman: “Saturday night when we were getting ready to close, didn’t I ask you to change the clocks?” Mechanic: “I did. I put the one by the desk in the back, and took the one in the back and put it in the nursery. The one in the nursery went up by the desk.” P.S. He also put in new bat-teries and advanced each clock an hour.

National Deaf Bowling NewsKodaWest Kids & Adults Had A

Blast at Monstrose Bowlby Connie Marchione

MONTROSE—Robert Taylor and his wife hosted a KODAWest bowling night last Saturday at Montrose Bowl, one of the oldest bowling establishments without automatic scoring system in California. The eight lanes were jam packed by kids of deaf parents and other invitees such as the officers of So Cali-fornia Deaf Traveling League, Ed Abakumoff and Connie Mar-chione.

Almost each lane were filled five bowlers deep and other kids and adults waiting for their turn to bowl. All having exciting times bowling and making fun of each other on the Montrose dry lanes.

Especially for the trio of Taylor, Abakumoff and Marchione as in the first game, only Taylor was able to conquer the extremely dry lanes with a 184 and Connie, thanks to a spare in 10th frame, hit a 100 on the nose. 200 average Ed without benefit of a warm-up tosses, was jeered when he ended with a 103. It was all in fun. Sorry I could not remember the other games bowled.

The night, which ended by the 12-midnight closing time, was a success for KODAWest and plans would be made to have an-ther one.

KODAWest is a non-profit organization which serves hear-ing children of deaf parents or adults who are deaf. Their mis-sion is to bring these KODAs (Kids Of Deaf Adults) together in a support/peer group type of environment, such as camps and cultural enrichment programs. With this unique fellowship, these children will gain confidence and wisdom which will help them develop a better understanding of and ability to embrace their two worlds: the hearing and the deaf. This organization also aims to provide resources and support workshops to deaf parents who face common issues while raising their KODAs.Stogryn Strokes 259 & 986 in Deaf Travel at Keystone

NORWALK—Nothing stops Darrell Stogryn in So Calif. Deaf Traveling League while he is on a mission to hit a 1000 for 4 games. In the league’s stop last Sunday at Keystone Lanes Stogryn came short 14 pins when he strokes games of 249-235-243(727)-259 for the league’s season high series 986. That is his third consecutive 700 and third 900 in row too with the latest replacing his own season high 976.

That is tough to do especially his 900’s came every two weeks and in three different centers. Stogryn’s 986 led the league’s hon-or roll of 6 bowlers as 5 teams hit 2000 plus on freshly oiled Keystone lanes.

Ed Abakumoff rolled the only other 800, his 6th straight in this league with 236-173-231-203 for 843 while Bob Jones failed to hit a 800 by 9 pins with 791 from 172-149-248-111.Others on the roll list were Pablo Yoma with 219/746, Robert Taylor 245/716 and Emad Aranki 223.

In this position round match Abakumoff helped his 2nd place Riverside move back into fist place for the 4th time this season by defeating Yoma’s S F Valley 15-5. Valley just held it briefly when it took over 1st place from Riverside in the last session. In a hard fought battle for 3rd place, 3d place Los Angeles retained its place while closely losing 9-11 to 4th place Glendale. Stogryn helped his El Camino Village beat Tri-Cities 12.5 to 7.5.

The league thanks Keystone GM Dave Piazza and his staff for being an excellent host. The next travel place will be Action Lanes in El Monte on March 22.

student who shows hard work, dedication, academic success, improvement, and academic success throughout the year. And, pretty special to Michael are the “Outstanding Achievement Awards” in the subjects of Pre-Calculus, AP English, AP Biology, and Leadership. Following his high school graduation, Michael will be attending U C Davis to further his education in the field of medicine. His goal: “become the first M.D. on the Pro Bowlers Tour”!

Some of Michael’s extra-curricular activities have included, a member of the high school foot-ball team where he played wide receiver and free safety. ASB Director of Clubs for 10th and 11th grades. He basically is in charge of every single club on school campus. He sees to it that each club is fulfilling school requirements, and is on task. He has served as President of the Environment Club each year since elected in the 9th grade. This club involves community service and leadership skills. They participate in beach clean-ups; community functions and school activities. Also during all of these number of years, Michael has served as Vice President to the Science Club. This year this club will participate in the National Science Bowl. He also is responsible for El Sobrante High School’s first science “peer tutoring” for the students who really need help.

Since 9th grade, Michael has been a member of his school’s Early Academic Outreach Program. The EAOP helps all prepare for college. It teaches them information that they will need for college and what they will need to actually be accepted into college. One requirement is being involved in “work experience”, which Michael knows a lot about. He is a “Party Host” for his local bowling center. He supervises the “Birthday Parties”, not only for the youngsters, but for private parties and businesses. He is involved with not only the customer assistance and coordinating the parties, but… the “clean up” afterwards! Off campus Michael is deeply involved with organizations such as Young Life Youth Group. Here, the members participate in numerous community projects, one of which is traveling to Mexico annually to build houses for the less fortunate.

In all of this and his fully committed academic schedule, Michael makes time to bowl two leagues per week, one on standard lane-pattern conditions and the other on sport lane-pattern con-ditions. But of course, he was born into a bowling family! His grandfather was a member of two leagues and bowled year round for many years, averaging in the neighborhood of 195. “Mike”, Michael’s dad, was a youth bowler all through his school years until graduation from high school when he had to leave the game. Then, when Michael was nine years old, he attended a “Bowling Birthday Party” and he was hooked! He liked everything about the game. Dad even took up his game again and enrolled Michael and brother Ronnie in youth bowling. Michael remembers well his first coaches Miles and Pam Mimms at Pinole Valley Lanes in Pinole, California. They made the game so much fun. Michael loved this game!

Early on he showed great potential and eventually became a student of Coaches Rod Ross, who puts on the Junior Gold Clinics; Rick Leong, who taught him how to read the lanes and drill balls; Eric Hattrup (currently proprietor of Diablo Lanes) who introduced him to the today’s dif-ficult “sport bowling lane patterns” and Debbie Haggerty, who helped him with his mental game. Michael is forever grateful to each of them and as he says, “they are more than just coaches, they’re friends and have put me on my next level of bowling”.

And what an exceptionally accomplished bowler he has become. In the 2007-2008 and 2006-2007 seasons alone, Michael recorded a certified average of 213 in the standard league and in the sport league 197 and 195 respectively, both of which would be equivalent to 208 when converted from the chart in the USBC Rule Book. On standard oil patterns Michael has recorded certified high games of a 299 and (2) 300’s, and a 795 and 802 series. And amazingly enough, on sport bowling oil conditions Michael has certified high games of 266 and 278 and a 720 and 742 series. And what’s so impressive here is that Michael has a different delivery than most bowlers….. He bowled one-handed for most of his life until about a year ago, when he taught himself to bowl two-handed for fun. He said “it felt pretty natural” I guess so, the recorded certified “300” games? The first one with one hand; the second one, with both hands. But no surprise, Michael’s mother Kathi says he’s at the bowling center practicing almost every single day.

Michael became a member of Northern California Junior Bowlers Tour (NCJBT) at a young age. At 13, he was the youngest member to move up to the scratch tournaments. At 14, he went to Jr. Gold Team USA Trials for the first time, finishing in the top 50 out of over l,000 boys. He has participated in this event each year since and has already qualified for the 2009 Team USA Tri-als. In 2004, 2005, and 2007, Michael was chosen to the NCJBT All Star Team. These bowlers, of course, are an elite group. All chosen because of not only their outstanding bowling achievements but their excellent sportsmanship conduct. Michael holds 1st place standings in local, state, na-tional and international tournaments, which include (2008) NCJBT; (2008) Fireside Sport Shot In-vitational; (2008) Earl Anthony’s Memorial Tournament; (2006-2008) Nor Cal Jr. Adult Doubles and 1st Place in the Jr. Adult Tournament held at the National Bowling Stadium. And currently, Michael is ranked first overall for the NCJBT.

Besides Michael’s outstanding performance on the lanes, he possesses wonderful leadership abilities and truly is a “people person”. He was President of the Jr. King of the Hill League from 2004 through 2008; and President of the Jr/Adult League from 2006 through 2008. Michael enjoys giving back to the game by volunteering his time teaching the little kids to bowl. He says he loves to see their face when they get their first strike. Michael enjoys the “giant family” in the bowling arena and long lasting friendships, which he will hold dear a life time.

Michael is indeed a family man. He takes pride in the fact that his younger brother Ronnie, with a 2l8 average, a couple of 800 series and tons of honor scores, bowls all of the scratch tournaments with him. He says “we help each other improve our games, and bowling has kept us best friends because we share the same love for the game.” Off the lanes, and since Michael was in the 7th grade, he and Ronnie have faithfully volunteered at the local Homeless Shelter. And, Michael is extremely close to his grandparents. At least one day a month, Michael reserves time to take his grandparents to a movie.

Michael Takeo Fujita, Jr. is truly a deserving honoree for the California USBC 2009 “Star of Tomorrow” $l,000 Scholarship and will be honored and presented his awards at the Annual Con-vention on Sunday, June 14th at the Marriott Hotel-Riverside.

STUDIO CITY — “Sloopy doopy bowl a poopy,” this mes-sage is brought to you by your favorite worker, Mario. Today we honor the most important thing here at Pinz...us. No joke, we care so much about you that we want to showcase our most valuale asset, the staff.

PINZ ADULTS Indeed he may have a handsome face and a miraculous smile, but Tony’s best attribute is his charitable side. He often referees basketball games for underprivileged kids. She gave up a lucrative corporate job to help out the people she cares about; you the customer. Thanks again Laura, we know Wall Street misses you. OC Youth Tourney

by B.A. Campbell

The Orange County Youth Tournament held Doubles and Singles at AMF Carter Bowl in Fullerton this past weekend, where over 150 competitors in four divisions battled against those tricky ten pins. With competitors from Yorba Linda Bowl, La Habra 300 Bowl, Linbrook Bowl, Westminster Lanes, Tustin Lanes, Fountain Bowl and Saddleback Lanes, the county had a wide repre-sentation. Glad to see so many young fresh-faced bowlers with their adults along, cheer-ing them on– (maybe us adults should have cheerleaders at our tournaments too!) Look for our Orange County Youth to be competing in their Team event at Forest Lanes in Lake Forest this coming weekend, squads are at 2 pm Saturday the 14th and 9:30 am and 12:30 pm Sunday the 15th; come out and join the adults cheering them on!

Former PBA Stars Help Team Into Lead at USBC Open Championships

LAS VEGAS—Former Professional Bowlers Association standouts Dave Husted of Milwaukie, Ore., and Mark Baker of Santa Ana, Calif., proved they are still as sharp as ever as they helped Forgey Sports Medicine 1 into the Regular Team lead at the United States Bowling Congress Open Championships on Wednesday.

After a slow 964 start, the group added games of 1,086 and 1,150 and moved into the top spot with a 3,200 team total. Their finale was the second-highest team game of the year behind previous leader, Highland Lanes 2 of Ottawa, Ohio, which shot 1,157 on the way to a 3,140 effort.

“In the first game, we all came out really tight,” said Husted, a PBA Hall of Famer who helped his team to a sixth-place fin-ish at the 2007 USBC Open Championships. “Before we started the second game, we picked each other up, and that’s when we settled down.”

Forgey Sports Medicine 1 was led by Baker, a four-time PBA champion, who shot 698. He was followed by Bob Porter (657), David Grooms (620), Corey Husted (616) and Dave Husted, a 14-time PBA titlist (609).

The team’s second game provided the confidence they needed and put them right back into contention.

“We knew what we were shooting for before the team event started,” Dave Husted said. “Having strikes going into the 10th frame was key. We’ve been on Tour before so we knew how to make our shots and deal with the pressure.”

After years of individual success, the annual trip to the Open Championships is a welcomed opportunity for Husted and his teammates to bowl together and enjoy the team atmosphere.

“This is the only time of the year we all bowl together,” Dave Husted said. “It’s nice to post a good score, all bowl well and most importantly, all have a blast. We will have some great sto-ries to tell.”

Athletes Elect MacPherson,

Manna to USBC Board

ARLINGTON, Texas — Wendy Macpherson and Tony Manna Jr. have been selected by the United States Bowling Congress Athlete Advisory Committee to serve on the USBC Board of Directors. They replace Bill Hoffman and Del Ballard Jr. who resigned when they took positions on the USBC staff late in 2008.

Macpherson, Henderson, Nev., a newcomer to the Board, will serve Hoffman’s one-year term. Manna, Omaha, Neb., an athlete Board member from 2004-08, will take over Bal-lard’s two-year term.

Macpherson began 2009 in stellar fashion by being elect-ed to the USBC Hall of Fame. She will be inducted May 1 at the USBC Convention in Reno, Nev.

The 20-time Professional Women’s Bowling Association champion made her presence known on the women’s scene as an 18-year-old amateur when she won the Women’s U.S. Open for her first title. Since then she became the youngest woman to win the tour’s Triple Crown, captured three USBC Queens titles, was selected Woman Bowler of the Year four times and became the all-time earnings leader in women’s professional bowl-ing with $1.2 million in 2003 when the PWBA ceased op-erations.

Macpherson also is the only woman to win a USBC Open Championships title, firing an 812 series to win the 2006 Regular Singles crown in Corpus Christi, Texas. She is a 2009 Team USA member, her

second consecutive year on the team.

Manna has served six times on Team USA (1998-2002, 2004). He earned three gold and two silver medals in 2002 Tournament of the Americas, three gold medals and one bronze in the 2001 Federation Internationale des Quilleurs American Zone Champion-ships, a gold medal in the 1999 Pan American Games, a silver medal in the 1999 FIQ World Championships and a silver medal in the 1998 FIQ World Tenpin Team Cup.

A member of the Nebraska State and Omaha Bowling Hall

of Fames, he was the 1994 Collegiate Bowler of the Year runner-up at the University of Nebraska and Intercollegiate Bowling Championships Most Valuable Player. Manna is a Senior Administrator at West Corporation in Omaha.

Manna is a graduate of the University of Nebraska where he also was a member of the bowling club and served as president from 1992-94. Also a member of the Omaha Bowl-ing Hall of Fame, he was the 1994 Collegiate Bowler of the Year runner-up and Intercolle-giate Bowling Championships Most Valuable Player.
