SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES

Sunday: Second Sunday of Lent; Penitential Rite for Candidates for

Full Communion

Tuesday: St. Katharine Drexel

Wednesday: St. Casimir; Purim (Jewish observance) begins at sunset

Friday: First Friday; World Day of Prayer; Abstinence

Friday: Ss. Perpetua and Felicity; First Saturday

LISTEN AND FOLLOW "This is my beloved Son. Listen to him." And listen they did. From that moment on, Peter, James, and John were ardent followers, forsaking everything to follow in their Master's footsteps. Like the psalmist crying, "O Lord, I am your servant," the three disciples committed themselves to lives of incredible hardship and inde-scribable joy. After that day on the mountain, they never again wavered in their chosen vocation. Though our tests may not be as severe as Abraham's and our peak experiences not as dramatic as the Transfiguration, we all face the daily challenges of walking "before the Lord in the land of the liv-ing." As we follow our varied calls to love and serve, let's be com-forted by Paul's reminder to the Romans: "If God is for us, who can be against us?"

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Within the tradition of the Christian church, there are differ-ing ways of observing a Lenten fast. For Eastern Catholics and Orthodox, the discipline is close to our understanding of "abstinence." Certain foods are eliminated from the diet entirely. The rules are basically monastic rules, and the customs of a monastery table are embraced in the home. This year, "Meatfare Sunday" is February 26, and it is the last time that meat is admitted to the diet until Easter. The following Sunday, known as "Cheesefare Sunday," takes cheese and all dairy products from the table. It is also known as "forgiveness Sunday" because a true fast is about crowning life with love, holding back harsh words, and cutting off anger. The Eastern churches fast even from celebrating the Eu-charist from Monday through Friday. We don't count Sun-days as fast days, but Eastern Christians fast through the weekends. People are expected to come as close to the ideal as possible, and the Lenten services keep reminding them not to take pride in their fasting, since the devil him-self never eats! What's left on the menu? Grains, vegeta-bles, eggs (maybe), and fish. Imagine the joys of the East-er table after such a fast! --Rev. James Field March 8, 2015

FOUR SUNDAYS LENTEN SERIES FOR ADULTS & PARENTS

March 1, 8, 15 and 22. From 3:45-5:15pm in the Big Annex.

Come and join us for a multi-media spiritual study series. During each lesson the programs explain

what Catholic believe and why. The series includes: The Revelation of God Become Man; The Teach-ings of Jesus; The Mystery of the Liturgy and the

Eucharist; and the Union of Christ and the Church.

Last week, the corner’s article reflected on the “Scrutinies” celebrated on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Sundays of Lent. After the Scrutinies, celebrated after the homily, the Elect and Candidates will be dismissed. The Parish is not sending them out because they are somehow “unworthy” to stay for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Though they cannot yet come to the table of the Eucharist, they have entered into a relationship with the church who feeds them with the word of the Lord. They are dismissed to dis-cuss the Mass readings and to experience more fully the impact of the Scriptures in their lives. This is called “Breaking Open the Word”. At their Bap-tism and full initiation into the body of Christ, hun-gry to receive the Body and Precious Blood of Christ, they will come to the table of the Eucharist for the first time . Next week, look for the answer on how the RCIA process encourages all Catho-lics to enter into Lent more deeply. Until next week….
