My husband and I decided to re-face our kitchen cabinets. We got a quote from a big box store and a cabinet re-facing company. Their price was out-to-lunch! A friend of mine referred me to Bill at Premium Cabinets. He came to our home, did the kitchen lay-out, helped us pick our colour and door style, crown moulding, and new handles. We also had them build us a pantry wall cabinet, and they also installed granite counter tops. We love our kitchen, and Bill!

How can we all do our part to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, which are responsible for global warming? “Preserving our forests, protecting our future”. As the only construction material that is derived from a renewable source, wood products help to reduce CO2 in the atmosphere — other materials generate CO2.
1. Choose wood: for any type of construc-tion, opt for wood as the main materi-al.
2. Insist on certified wood: this is the proof that it comes from sustainably managed forests.
3. Say “no” to treated wood: treated wood is toxic for the environment and human health.
4. Buy wood products manufactured locally: this will reduce GHG emissions generated by transportation.
5. Re-use wood: rather than discarding pieces of wood, try to find a way to re-use them.
6. Recycle wood: wood which is no longer of any use to you can be brought to recycling centres, where it will be recy-cled.
7. Plant a tree: a tree will not only make your house more attractive, it will also shelter it from the wind and shade it from the sun on hot summer days.
8. Ask for local products: insist that your retailer buy from local producers.
9. Follow planting regulations: this will help you to avoid having to cut down a tree growing too close to an electricity line, for example.
10. Be informed: to know more about recognized certifications, visit www.certificationcanada.org or www.certi-fiedwoodsearch.org.
Ten ways to reduce GHG emissions
Ten percent of the world’s forests are situated within Canada’s borders, making the theme a particularly relevant one for us here at home. Indeed, Canada’s forests cover almost half of the country and shelter two thirds of our wildlife.
There is no doubt that forests are at the heart of our future. Canada’s forest products sector has long been a cornerstone of our economy, as it is the larg-est net exporter and one of the main manufacturing industries in this country. This sector is made up of wood products such as lumber, panelling, doors and windows, kitchen cabinets, and floor coverings, as well as paper and related products such as paper tissues and paper napkins.
The efficient management and sustainable development of this resource are of vital importance to the industry and to our country. Environmental con-siderations are important too: forests diminish the effects of climate change by capturing atmospheric carbon. Wood products also have the advantage of being made from biological, ecological, biodegradable and recyclable materials, and their production allows for the sequestration of some of the CO2 contained in trees.
Preserving our forests, protecting our future

Only twelve plant species and fourteen animal species ensure the main sources of food for our planet. Declining biodiversi-ty means a reduction in opportunities for growth and the necessary innovation to kick-start agriculture during a period of soaring food prices. This surge in prices is the most serious in modern times and includes the mounting price of bread, rice, corn, milk, oil, soya and other basic foods in all developing countries.
This problem appears to be a global one, as we are talking here about basic food-stuffs which formerly helped to feed us all. As foods now have a market value, our individual actions must be oriented
towards responsible consumption. For example, knowing that the production of biofuels is taking over agricultural land formerly used for food production, why not reduce car use rather than buying these fuels at the pump.
Revising our eating habits is another example. Knowing that it takes fi ve times more land to produce a calorie of meat than a calorie of grain, why not take advantage of this week to discover some new vegetarian recipes or to fi nd a local farmer who can supply you with local-ly raised meats such as lamb, bison, goose...?
Thinking about the role of agriculture
So, with the environment in mind, why not cut back on your electricity consump-tion? Here are a few tricks: always turn off lights when leaving a room, switch off the computer and television when not in use and use compact fl uorescent light bulbs.
Here are a few important suggestions to help reduce your water consumption. Simple gestures, such as not letting the tap run uselessly when brushing your teeth, may seem like nothing at all, but they’ll result in positive consequences over the long term. You could also try
and reduce the quantity of water you use when washing dishes. And fi nally, drink tap water as often as possible instead of buying bottled water, in order to avoid unnecessary packaging.
You will soon realize that it isn’t all that diffi cult to be environmentally aware on a daily basis. Simply take advantage of the numerous activities offered during this thematic week, in order to fi nd out more about your power to change the situation. After that, it’s just a simple question of willingness!
Some bad habits...

When we think about agriculture, we think about halting deforestation, about cultivation methods involving more technology, about the organization of Canadian farming in order to reduce the amount of food products which travel huge distances to get here... and how we, as individuals, can participate in this process. This will encourage us to change the food we put on our tables on a daily basis!
Indeed, food is one of our main rela-tionships with the environment. As a tree feeds from the soil where its roots develop, human beings should procure their food from the area in which they live... this individual gesture can have an enormous impact on your local com-
munity. It is very easy to limit or refuse to consume fruits and vegetables grown out of season, in heated greenhouses and transported by plane.
We can also choose to support a local farm where the meat will be of top quali-ty because all the ingredients used to feed the livestock come directly from local farms. We can also avoid purchasing meat which comes from large industrial farms. Base your decision on a recent report which estimates that industrial farms are responsible for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions, due mainly to transportation. Here is something to make us all think about what we can do to limit our carbon footprint and reduce global warming.
For the sake of the environment... watch what you eat!
What strikes us the most when we think about the environment is probably the pollution caused by all the traffi c on our roads. Reducing car emissions could easily contribute to cleaner air and would benefi t everyone’s health. So why not make the most of this thematic week and try to use an alternative form of transportation whenever possible? Indeed, the various alternatives avail-able to us are becoming more and more popular across Canada, particularly in the large cities where many workers now use them as a means of travelling between the home and the workplace.
Weather permitting, cycling or even walking are interesting options. Not
only will you be helping the environ-ment but you’ll also be doing some physical exercise every day and what could be better than that? If you’re not very keen on sports, you would turn naturally towards public transportation. Forget all those traffi c jams and let your-self be taken to your destination while reading a newspaper and sipping on a coffee. You’ll soon realize that this is a great way to start your day!
In short, you’ll need to take some ini-tiative to break your habit of always using a car but this is one small gesture which could have huge repercussions on our future.
The popularity of sustainable transportation
