Can I please remind parents that students attending school on a daily basis, except for genuine sickness is a legal requirement. Attending school on a daily basis is hugely important. Every day counts towards a student’s learning and pays huge dividends for their future. Every day missed takes three days to catch up. Regular attendance is needed for students continued learning so that they don’t develop gaps in their knowledge and it also means they are likely to experience educational success. To this end it’s really important that you, as parents, place importance on daily attendance. As always, students learn by example and will take your lead. If you show a relaxed attitude to their going to school, then they will too. If your student is absent on any given day, where possible you should let the school know. You can do this by phoning the school office and telling them your student’s name, why they are absent, or sending a message through the website. The school becomes the guardian of your student during the school day and want to get it right and know where every one of our students are at any given time. Getting your student to school on time is also important. Routines and rituals are the best way to ensure going to school is easy. Some basic, easy to establish rituals and routines you can put in place that will help are – Being organised for the next day- Make sure bags are packed, uniforms are laid out and homework is completed the afternoon/night before school. Rushing in the morning puts everyone on edge and causes problems. Plenty of sleep on school nights- It’s so important to set school night bedtimes and stick to them where humanly possible. A tired, grumpy teenager at school is no fun for anyone, and chances are they won’t want to get up and go in the morning. Turn off the internet router at a reasonable time in the evening so they can’t be playing games during the night. I always find it disturbing when I look at our Facebook page insights and see the most traffic is around 2am!!! A good breakfast- A hungry brain doesn’t function well enough to learn and take in everything a school day offers. Please ensure your teenager has breakfast, or alternatively they get to school with enough time to have something to eat at our breakfast club. Be on time- Help your student get up, ready, out the door and to school on time. Punctuality is important to learn, for school and the rest of their lives. If your students is finding it difficult to get to school, please talk to their Dean so we can support them, it is better to sort it as soon as possible.

Our Library is open every week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday until 5pm. This a nice warm, dry place with internet and chrome books, and support for students to do their homework or study. From next week we will also be providing an afternoon snack and milo to anyone using the library after school.

Senior reports are currently being written and our senior report night is Tuesday 11 June. Shortly you will be able to book interviews via our online system, that we trialled last year. Please keep an eye on your emails for this link.

Our Champagnat Day Mass is fast approaching. We would love as many parents and whānau as possible to come and celebrate with us. Please put it in your dairy for Thursday 6 June at 11.30am.

As a church community, we are still in Eastertide. Sunday’s gospel reminded us of what we need to do as Christians… “ love one another, as I have loved you”

What's Been Happening Around the School

Virtual Reality Year 7 & 8 On Friday the 10th May, the Year 7 & 8 students had an amazing experience exploring the wonder of what’s beneath the surface of our oceans through an underwater virtual reality (VR) experience. Through virtual reality, the students experienced the rich biodiversity that exists below the surface of the Hauraki Gulf and connected open spaces, as well as the damage that's been done to the ecosystem. The students walked away with actions they can take to protect the environment and gain a much deeper sense of kaitiakitanga. With this in mind we have teamed up with other schools in our community to help clean up the Manukau Harbour. If you are interested in helping out with this inaugural project details are given below and more information on this event is on the noticeboard section of this newsletter: Manukau Harbour Clean-up Event When: Saturday 15th June 2pm Where: Corner Coronation Road and Waterfront Road, Mangere Bridge (beside GAS station) Who: Students, teachers and families from all schools and ECE’s in Te Iti Kahurangi Kahui Ako that are interested are invited to attend.

Ms. Croxford, Year 7 & Year 8 Teacher.

Year 7, 8 & 10 Writers Festival Trip Last week the Years 7,8 and 10 attended the Auckland Writers Festival. The Auckland Writers Festival is a week-long event which features a large variety of authors talking about their work. We attended the excellent and well-organised schools programme over two days. We had a great time, and were lucky enough to see some brilliant authors. The students came back enthusiastic, with one parent saying that their son had "not stopped buzzing" about it. We love to provide these opportunities for our akonga and appreciate the support from parents and whanau. Ask your child about their experience! Thanks to all the staff that attended in support. Ms. Metcalfe, English Teacher

Anti-Bullying Week

Last week Marcellin College marked anti-bullying week by having a question around bullying in the daily notices and wearing pink ribbons as their solidarity. They were able to answer these questions during Kaitiaki time. On Thursday each Kaitiaki class were given a lesson around bullying and staff also showed their support by participating in Pink Shirt day on Friday 17th May.

Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) We had three Year 11 students participate in this years MUNA; Scolastica Samoa Fa’aluaseu Filipo, Lawson Tuiletufuga and Asmeret Neguse. They represented India as a United Nation (UN) country, in debates on matters of world politics and social concern. The MUNA lasted for two days (Friday-Saturday) and was held at Auckland Girls Grammar school. Students from different schools got to represent a United Nation country too and were involved in debates about issues around the world. The purpose of MUNA is to develop goodwill for the furtherance of world peace and understanding. It is also providing students with an awareness of the United Nations and the international situation of the countries of the world.

Pompallier Shield This years Pompallier Shield event was held at McAuley College on Thursday 16th May. This event is a Catholic Secondary School competition incorporating speech and scripture. We had five students participating in the speech event and also seven students in the Waiata Presentation. Te Iti Kahurangi Manukau Harbour Environmental Project Working Group

Teachers from many schools (ROI, OHS, ROP, Oranga, Waterlea, Mangere Bridge and Marcellin College) in Te Iti Kahurangi Kahui Ako have formed a Manukau Harbour Environmental Project Working Group. The purpose of this working group is to focus on ways in which our schools and extended communities can collaborate on projects in our local area, surrounding the Manukau Harbour. The teachers representing the various schools held a meeting earlier in this term. Many ideas were discussed with much enthusiasm. The details of the group’s first project are listed below. Anyone interested in helping with this inaugural project is warmly invited to join us. Interested parties are encouraged to bring along buckets and tongs to help with the clean-up. We would rather not use plastic gloves and plastic bags for obvious reasons.

Manukau Harbour Clean-up Event When: Saturday 15th June 2pm Where: Corner Coronation Road and Waterfront Road, Mangere Bridge (beside GAS station) Who: Students, teachers and families from all schools and ECE’s in Te Iti Kahurangi Kahui Ako that are interested are invited to attend.
