BiographyMarc Fantini is a musician and experimental artist born on December 29th in Aubonne, Switzerland. He is currently living in Berlin.

After studying percussions and drums at the Conservatoire de Lausanne and at the EJMA jazz and contem-porary music school, he co-founded Monno in 1999, a band that has since then become a reference in the experimental music scene. He is now part of several solo and group projects that have lead him to play all around Europe in clubs and Festivals.

Since his arrival in Berlin in 2004, and deeply influenced by the great cultural diversity of the city, he has extended the field of his artistic activities, including video art, painting, sculpture and electronic music to his drummer background. This new orientation has lead to numerous collaborative works, including all types of artists, such as Japanese artist Soichiro Mitsuya or the Irish dance company Input/Output.

In 2008, he has created a solo project, « petitemusiqueapocaliptyque » conceived as a synthesis of all these years of shared experimentations. Including abstract musical compositions and video art, his work has been displayed in several galleries and venues throughout Europe.

Since 2009, Marc Fantini has been involved in the creation and development of NK, an artistic centre in Berlin that organises workshops, lectures and shows for international artists. His involvement has lead to new collaborations in 2009, including performances with Joke Lanz (Sudden Infant), algorithmic composi-tions with Spanish artist Rubén Patiño and a promising collaboration with Egyptian new media Artist Heba Amin.

This project, in constant evolution, is mostly composed of abstract musical compositions (from wall of sounds to refined audio textures), mixed with video projections. The pieces are conceived as audio-visual transcriptions of social and anthropological parameters experimented by the artist.

Through abstract worrying sounds, the compositions tend to generate a slight feeling of anxiety for the auditor. To release or sometimes accentuate this feeling, the sound is accompanied with videos conceived as cyclical or repetitive meditations. Most of the times, these visual perambulations picture the world as a strange abandoned place where buildings are endless and life is almost inexistent, apart from animals and the artist who sometimes appears in his creations. Reflecting the great curiosity of its creator, the project is constantly including new medias, such as painting, sculpture, stop motion and more recently 3d animations.

The video is exploring the contrast between nature and the helpless feeling generated by the blind architecture that surrounds us. This work has been projected on rock formations as part of the MAW white desert project, an event that has taken place in November 2009 and that has been shown in the Townhouse gallery in Cairo.

Collaboration between Marc Fantini and Japanese multimedia artist Soichiro Mitsuya, that has lead to numerous performances in art galleries in Berlin between 2004 and 2007. Their artistic approach includes sound installations, sculpture, video art and field recordings, as well as live electronic sound textures.

In 2007, The duo obtained a residency at the Parisian art centre « La Générale ». During this period, they also played at « Les Instants Chavirés » in Montreuil. Hours of recorded performances and experiments document their work.

Performance that was part of a group exhibition taking place in the House of the German Confederation of Trade Unions. We played dance music, using sounds that were associated to movements and communication, such as airplane and a train, table tennis and a mobile telephone, on a green tract in the middle of a street in front of the House.

The second piece of the P series is installed in the unused staircase of the Residence, which used to be an old ceramics factory in Paris. The installation, repeated in various locations, is exploring the variation of resonance of different spaces through the way they «vibrate».

どの空間にもその空間の音がある。大きさ、形、材質によって音の響き方は違ってくる。Pシリーズの二つめのインスタはパリの古い陶器工場を使ったレジデンスのもう使われていないエレベーターの吹き抜け部分に設置した。Place(場所）の違いによる音の響き方の違いをテーマとしています。

A work that made a cynical remark on a random generator, in minimal music and computer algorithm. The motors are set so that the propeller beats the drum indefinitely. When a person en-ters the Room, a passive infrared sensor operates, and turns on the electricity. Suddenly, a light hits a solar panel, and the motor touching colour tapes turns around, and opens a plastic flower.

モーターに付けられたプロペラがドラムセットをたたくという作品。ミニマルミュージックやコンピュータアレゴリズムにおいてのランダムジェネレーターを皮肉った作品。モーターが不確定的に太鼓をたたくようにモーターが動きやすく置かれている。人が入ってくると人感センサーが稼働して電気がつき，ライトの前に置かれたソーラーパネルに光が当たり，色のついたテープを付けたモーターが回りプラスチックの花が開く。

Monno was formed in 1999 in Lausanne where the original mem-bers -Antoine Chessex, Gilles Aubry and Marc Fantini)- met in the experimental music scene.

After working together in different projects and recording a demo tape, they started to play live as a quartet. The music in that time was a mix of heavy rock, free jazz & electronic textures. They played their first concert as Monno in 2002 in Berlin, the city they relocated to.

In 2003 Subdeviant Recordings (a subdivision of Conspiracy Records) picked them up and released their debut CD Candlelight Technology. Joined by Canadian bass player Derek Shirley, Monno left on tour for the first time, shattering audiences and sharing stages with Melt Banana and Suicide’s Martin Rev.

In 2004, the were invited by LIGHTNING BOLT to join them on tour throughout Europe. Monno starts to write new material for ERROR and brings it on tour with ISIS and JESU, resulting in a live recording of a memorable concert in Ljubljana - fists in the air - The shear inertia of these songs made most self-styled hardcore kids recoil in terror, but the energy coming of that stage warned us Error was not gonna go unnoti-ced.

A work that featured the themes of circles, cycles, and circulation systems. The main purpose of the exhibition is a comparison between the concrete wheel that loses it edges little by little with friction with the floor, and an Animation film. The images are pho-tograph of the wheel, turning endlessly. The variation appears from feedback loops like howling of a sound and the light that keeps on changing artificially.

輪や回転、循環機能をテーマとした作品。床との摩擦で少しずつ削れてゆく車輪と、その車輪の写真から作った変化せずに回り続けるアニメーションや音や光のハウリングのように擬似的に変化し続けるフィードバックのバリエーションとの対比が展示の核となっています。

NK is a 500 square meter factory floor, dedicated to Sound Art practices, situated at Elsenstr. 52 in the Neukolln area in Berlin. It houses 7 Resident artist studios for International sound and me-dia artists working in new technologies and unconventional forms of musical expression.Marc Fantini has been involved in the project since 2009, partici-pating in the hosting of monthly experimental concerts, exhibitions of sound installations, software and hardware hacking workshops, artist presentations and talks, and a weekly supercollider meeting.

Tupolev is a rock band based in Berlin formed in 2006. It is com-posed of four members coming from France (Laurent Lavolée), Ireland (Keith O’Brien, Tom O’Doherty) and Switzerland (Marc Fantini), who met through Berlin noise/improvisation/drone scene. They have recorded a first album in 2007 and have given many performances in Berlin and throughout Europe

A duo created in 2008 with German musician Willehad Grafen-horst. Their compositions, including Drums, Laptop and electronic music have been performed live, but also used in various videos, including works for the transmedia project «Cri du Coeur».They have recorded a CD in 2008 and play on a regular basis in clubs and galleries around Berlin.

ERROR marked a change towards a heavier sound in the music: the sax is played through two guitar amps and fires heavy riffs which don’t sound like saxophone any more, the laptop provides dense walls of noise while bass and drums keep massive beats.

In 2007, they did a three-weeks european tour with KNUT and developed new material. They went back in the studio in april 2008 to record GHOSTS, their third full length.

GHOSTS feature ethereal drones, haunted doom-riffs and poisonous beats, creating a dark undertow between nightmarish paranoia and mysterious transcendence.

MONNO´s music is in constant mutation, like a reflection of the times we live in.

AwardsCreated in 1999, MONNO has been supported financially several times by the Pro Helvetia Foundation, the canton de Vaud, the city of Lausanne as well as Interpret Stiftung, the Suisa foundation and the canton du Jura.

Teaching experienceBetween 1998 and 2003, Marc Fantini has taught drums at the Syncope music school in Morges (CH). He has also participated in a pedagogic program giving particular courses to disabled kids.
