by the time I finished. Anyway I didn't have any high expectations so I quickly shifted to survival mode
(aka walking) and notched another marathon (#37) but also a new PW at 4:35:54 (unofficial watch time).
3
I usually run at about 5am when the temperature is about 50, but this has been a colder than normal spring
and the typical morning has been closer to 45. It has been 2 months since I was running in Arizona, but
even then the early morning temperature was about 55. Consequently I was not very well acclimated to
running a marathon starting at 65 deg and rising to 88 at the finish. The weather service even issued a
weather advisory today telling people to avoid strenuous outdoor activities!
Dale Shoup David Stout Tony Johns Ken Briggs Mike Herrin
The first 5 miles were very pleasant and easy as we ran across the flat part of the Evergreen Point
Floating Bridge. I didn't see any mileage markers until mile 3, and was running only a little fast with a
42:42 split for the first 5 miles.
My wheels already started to come off for the second 5 miles. With the temperature, my HRM was already
beeping as I ran up the gentle rise to the east high rise. However when we climbed up the steep hill my HRM
went over 150 and I decided it would be best to give my heart a break and walk up the hill. That was only
the first of many hills and many walks. Eventually they weren't necessarily connected as I would succumb
to heat and exhaustion. The splits for my second and third 5 miles were 50:09 and 51:46.
I thought seriously of turning off with the half-marathon folks and settling for a DNF since the finishes
were in the same place. Instead I went for the second half loop with ever increasing heat. Several of the
stops had run out of cups, while others had hastily procured substitute cups, which thankfully tended to be
larger. By now the temperature was in the 80's and I eagerly went out of my way to accept any offered spray
4
of water. Initially I resisted the urge to grab two cups of water out of courtesy to the slower runners,
but then I had to relent. As the heat went up, my splits went up, first to 54:03 and then to 1:04:25, as I
replaced more and more of the running with walking.
“Walking Diva” Holder Tom Rogers Mark King “MMM” and “Coconut Boy” – aka the Mahoneys
I expected to be passed by lots of folks, but I guess a lot of other runners were suffering the same fate
as me. You would think that someone from Scottsdale would not be bothered by a mere 88 deg, but yet I heard
the announcement as someone from Scottsdale finished behind me.
The new course is interesting and has some beautiful views, but I think it is rather hilly. On a better day
that may not be so bad, but today I resented every one of them. They need to improve the logistics a bit.
There were nowhere near enough port-a-potties at the start line, and there was some problem with police
security getting the roads closed causing a 15 minute delay in the start. That worked out at least for me
since I could not get in and out of my port-a-potty before the scheduled start.

HOW RUNNING GAVE ME TIME TO DO THINGS RIGHT
On June 1st, 2008, I found out how I was supposed to die. Happily for me, things did not turn out quite that way, and I have running to
thank for that. Now it's up to me to make the most of the additional time I have been given.
That morning my heart stopped without any warning. I was closing in on the finish line of a 10K race in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
Suddenly my legs became weak and it seemed like someone was dropping the curtain at a theater. There was no pain, and within 2
strides I was down on the ground, totally unconscious. I had time for two thoughts, as I recall: first, “I don't think this is supposed to
be happening,” and second, “I hope this isn't the Big One.” I later learned that I was basically correct in both accounts: no, this was not
normal; and yes, although this was not technically a heart attack, it was indeed “sudden cardiac arrest” and was certainly as serious as
any heart attack can be. Many people die from sudden cardiac arrest, which my doctors described to me as an electrical short-circuit
that causes the heart to stop. The reason I didn't die is because I was within 2 blocks of a finish line at an organized race event.
Paramedics were providing assistance to me within 20 seconds. My heart was restarted with an artificial electrical defibrillator (an
AED, common now in airplanes, airports and other public facilities); CPR was performed; and I was whisked off to the local ER
where I was quickly stabilized and was in good spirits in remarkably short order. Yes, good spirits: I wasn't dead! And I knew I could
well be, maybe even should be.
I am 52 years old, born and raised on a farm near Sioux Falls. My parents were good, simple people, providing our family with a
good, simple life. Every Saturday night was pancake night, every Sunday dinner a pot roast of some sort. Lots of meat and potatoes
8
with some vegetables and fruit (usually in canned syrup) on the side. We learned later that there was a history of heart disease in the
family. Indeed, my Dad had a minor heart attack at age 54 (which seemed a lifetime away for a 16-year-old boy); his second one killed
him about 20 years later. About that time, as a teen-ager, I was offered choices that I did not deal with very well, leading up that
beautiful Sunday morning in Colorado when it was supposed to be over for me.
Amy Yanni at Grandfather Mountain Don Pemberton at Missoula Bryan Baroffio at Koenig Ludwig (Germany)
Can you imagine Sioux Falls without a single McDonald's Restaurant? I can, because I remember the first one opening on South
Minnesota Avenue. The same is true for Pizza Hut and many of the chain franchises that work so hard to attract our business. Believe
it or not, when these places opened they held themselves out to be mere treats for the family. They were places to go on special
occasions, not part of our regular diet. Regular food still came from a grocery store and was prepared by somebody at home.
Somehow this changed. I am not here to argue the merits of lawsuits trying to hold the fast-food industry responsible for America's
obesity epidemic. All I know is what happened to me: I went off to college and took a job delivering pizza, in the process developing
quite a taste for it. Indeed, I developed quite a taste for lots of things that were not good for me, including cigarettes. For no good
reason, I interrupted my studies one day and bought a pack; I finally put the last one down some 30 years later. But at the time I was a
9
a strapping young man with my whole life ahead of me. I knew I shouldn't smoke, but I had lots of time to quit. My dietary habits
could also change in time.
But it takes time and energy to quash old habits and form new ones, and I was devoting my time and energy to a career and a family.
Soon enough I was in my 40s, still smoking and eating very poorly. In the meantime, the arteries surrounding my heart were clogging
up. I began to experience bad numbers from my blood tests and received medications to address high cholesterol and blood pressure. I
finally started watching my diet and cut way back on my tobacco use. But a couple of the arteries supplying blood to my heart were
clogged and nobody knew that – not until the day after my heart stopped in Colorado.
Running saved my life because it revealed a condition that existed before I started running this past January, and also because my
heart was better able to deal with the trauma it underwent. Because I had begun running again, my heart was in fact quite strong. It
avoided the muscle-damaging “heart attack” in favor of “cardiac arrest,” a tremendous bonus as I begin my rehabilitation. I was
immensely pleased when my cardiac surgeon said I had a “runner's heart” -- this despite the horrible choices I'd made in the past and
the fact that I'd only been running for some 5 months or so.
I write this in hope of preventing somebody from experiencing what I have experienced these past several weeks. Yet I look around
and see that my choices are not all that uncommon. Do you really need that extra cheese in your pizza's crust? I hope you are smarter
about all this than I was; in that case you won't need to have the tremendous amount of luck that I had by having heart failure in a
crowd of people and paramedics. In the meantime, I am learning the pleasures of new foods and I no longer suspect, deep inside, how
I'm going to die.

7/02 –Mary Patch #1026 (Pembroke Pines, Florida): Mary (posing proudly with her kids in the picture above) is a Bronze Maniac with her 2 marathons (Keys

7/02 –Steve Hibbs #1027 (Brooklyn Park, Minnesota): Talk about someone who’s definitely run all over, Steve certainly fits that bill as a running jet-setter. Not
only is his best hardcore Maniac streak impressive (26 states in one year – 8-star Iridium), but has completed all 50 states, DC and all 7 Continents . Of course,
owning your own Marathon Travel Company (Marathon Adventures) provides him the opportunities to mix business with pleasure.
13
7/02 –Bob “BobO” O’Brien #1028 (Vancouver, Washington): Having briefly mentioning to us that Seafair was going to be the race that would qualify him for
insanity and voila…he’s in! His Maniac streak of 3 in 3 months consisted of Boston, Newport and Seafair. BobO has run 11 total marathons in 4 states.
7/03 –Robyn Bassett #1029 (Vernonia, Oregon): Bronze
7/05 – Marci Martin #1030 (Hoquim, Washington): The next wife-husband combo to join the ranks of the Maniacs, Marci is the wife of Maniac 576 Bob

her to try to join the Maniacs . She did the Calgary Marathon the week after Seafair to meet the Bronze level criteria. And for her it seems to be working since
her times are improving with each successive race.

7/07 – Kurt Spurgeon #1037 (Glendale Heights, Illinois): Bronze
7/08 – David Forbes #1038 (Kent, Washington): David recently met the Bronze Maniac criteria by completing the Tacoma City, North Olympic Discovery and

marathons and the Bronze criteria of 3 in 3 months twice that year. He took a break due to family, work and injuries and is now active again. His lifetime totals
include 14 marathons in 7 states and DC.
15
Bryan Robertson William Wilcox Sharon Reese Cormac Burke
7/16 –Sharon Reese #1046 (Duvall, Washington): Sharon may have heard about the Maniacs and was tempted to join as her only 3 marathons happened during
the past 3 months (Capital City, North Olympic Discovery and Seafair). As they say in the Olympics, she wins the Bronze medal!
7/18 – Jean Reid #1047(Louisville, Kentucky): Iridium
7/21 – Cormac Burke #1048 (Portland, Oregon): A running buddy of Maniac #9, Cormac says he was both “encouraged” and “harassed” by Marc into joining
the Maniacs. This is probably true. This summer, he ran the Newport, Foot Traffic Flat and the Crescent Forest Trail Marathons to qualify for Bronze level in the
Insane Asylum. Cormac has 19 lifetime marathons to his credit, running them in 4 states.
7/24 – Seth Elsheimer #1049(Winter Park, Florida): Seth has had a busy last 12 months as his 17 events in 17 states will attest, putting him in the upper class of
the Insane Asylum (6-star Osmium level). He has completed 50 marathons and 5 ultras in 29 states and has run overseas in Prague and Athens.

Miwok 100 km. Besides Miwok. His impressive 2008 resume includes the Death Valley Marathon, Way Too Cool 50 km, Rucky Chucky 50km and the
American River 50 miler. Add in the North Face Challenge 50km from last year for John’s best Maniac streak of 6 in 6 months, thus earning him 2-star
Silver status.
7/28 – Alex Jorna #1051 (Bailey, Colorado): Alex joins the Maniacs as a Bronze member by streaking with 3 marathons in 3 months, which happened last year
at St. Louis, Fargo and Deadwood=Mickelson. He has completed 28 marathons and 1 ultra in his lifetime.

Rhetorical Revelations and W(Rites)…from the Rambunctious Rev
Dear Mr. President,
BIG Trouble.
Did you see this, right there on the home page?
I can‟t believe it.
“Mike Warren, member 1,002.”
After all these years of “good old #2, „Hollywood‟ Warren,” telling us “you can do it!”, and another time “you can do it!”,
and then when we‟re all limping and hurting bad, and our backs are getting sore, and bionic-man-creating doctors are living
large off of our bods, and CW is chirping and smiling, “aww, you can do it!,” after all these years of believing him and suffering
through “two marathons in two weekends” so I will at least still look like, maybe, I kind-of sort-of belong in this club, after ALL
THIS TIME, finally a “Mike Warren” becomes member one thousand two?
You mean to tell me Chris couldn‟t get his own brother into this self-flagellation before this?
But he got me to be cuckoo for these last five years?
I have been HAD. Punishment is a must for Mr. Horrorwood.
18
1) In his next marathon, he MUST wear around his neck every one of the pile of medals I‟ve suffered through. ON TOP OF
wearing all forty-six of the shirts. The warmer the marathon we choose, the better.
2) HE MUST immediately sign-up for every race he will need to qualify for the Hall of Fame. That‟s right. 99 one hundred
milers. Sign him up. Now.
3) And the topper: if he EVER talks some sister or cousin or somebody else on his family tree again into following him down
this addictive path, then he has to fly to Texas every Friday and carry Macon‟s luggage to wherever Mr. M is running that
weekend. Man, he will see more airports than “you can do it!” signs inside a month.
Alright. Part two. Mike Warren, and all other newbies: Welcome! Rev‟s Advice: Make friends with somebody not named
you-know-who quick though, somebody in the club who isn‟t nuts, for guidance sake. (Beware of, say, a relative.) Sane, sane
is good. I‟d make a recommendation, but, well, with all due respect to my happy buddy Stevie Yee, and the apparently gentle
TP Phillippi, um, I can‟t think of one.
Part three. To my mini-maniac friends who continue to read the bulletin board with jaw half open: I heard from Santa
Claus, who is bound and determined to return to his youthful glory days. He managed four consecutive running miles under
ten minutes each this past Sunday. I know, hard to believe. Evidently, resurrection is possible. He asked me to tell you: the
words “you can do it” are applicable to some sane next goal whatever your current status. Be encouraged. You are welcome
here.
Love ya,
Rev
