WHO IS ARROW ENERGY? We’re always looking for new environments to explore, new boundaries to push and new opportunities to grow. As a leading cleaner energy company, Arrow Energy is brimming with opportunities.

Arrow Energy is a 50/50 joint venture between Royal Dutch Shell and PetroChina.

As one of the largest integrated energy companies in Australia with five gas producing projects, ownership of one gas-fired power station and interests in two others, through coal seam gas (CSG) we currently provide 20 per cent of Queensland’s gas supply which is mostly used to generate electricity.

Arrow is an equal opportunity employer and we welcome the best people in oil and gas from all walks of life, from all over the world.

DISCOVER THE PROJECT.We are currently expanding our exploration activities to deliver a major coal seam gas to liquefied natural gas (CSG–LNG) project on Curtis Island off Gladstone in Central Queensland which will play an important role in meeting growing world demand for cleaner burning fuels.

While Arrow’s head office is based in Brisbane’s CBD, a large number of our staff are located in our regional Queensland offices in Moranbah and Dalby. There is also a small but growing office in Gladstone, as Arrow prepares to deliver this liquefaction plant on Curtis Island.

Wherever you want to go and whatever you want to achieve, Arrow can make it happen.

DISCOVER QUEENSLAND. Arrow Energy is based in Queensland, a northern Australian state boasting a relaxed lifestyle, world-class beaches, breathtaking landscapes and lowest taxes in Australia.

The people of Queensland enjoy a sought-after lifestyle with vibrant cities, vast national parks, pristine rainforests, and stunning tropical reefs to explore.

Our pleasant climate (average summer temperatures of 25 degrees celsius, average winter temperatures of 15 degrees celsius) means that Queenslanders enjoy more winter sunshine and warmth than most other Australians.

All this ensures that Queensland’s current population of over 4.5 million continues to grow and prosper.

Get the best of both worlds. Make the move and expand your horizons while you grow your career with Arrow.

Ali was born in Scotland, lived in Zambia, found herself in New Zealand and now

lives in London. Her moving tips are: “plan to be flexible”; and “once you

move, you’re going to realise you miss things you never gave a second thought

at home. Give it time, you’ll adjust!”

Originally from Yorkshire, Russell moved to New Zealand in 2010. For an easier

experience settling into a new place he suggests you: “drink local beer, eat local

food and read the local newspaper”, each is a good way to absorb the flavour of

your new country.

Marcjon first left the UK in 2008 to go travelling. He wanted to live in Australia

or New Zealand – he just didn’t know which one! He ended up settling in New Zealand in 2010 and became a resident. Beautiful country, exciting lifestyle and a great job offer – it was an easy choice

in the end.

Mandy laughingly calls herself a ‘Commonwealth Nomad’. She moved

from Scotland to South Africa and moved to Australia in 2005 with hubby and two

South African-born children. She says “Be open-minded, prepared and never

lose your sense of adventure – or humour:”

Hanna relocated to New Zealand in 2008 and now considers it home. Hanna loves the outdoors and has

been inspired by the Kiwi love of sport to take up running, with a few half

marathon wins under her belt in the last year. There’s nothing like taking in

the stunning NZ scenery on foot.

Born in the USA and raised in Australia, Nassim moved to New Zealand in 2009.

Having completed a law degree in Sydney, she is one of the visa team based

at our Auckland head office. Living on Auckland’s west coast, Nassim loves

to spend weekends at Piha or Cornwallis beach.

Caro is originally from Chile and moved to Sydney for work. She loves travelling, snowboarding and meeting new people. Her tips for moving overseas are to have

a passion for travel; be brave in the face of new challenges; and always be

proactive.

South African-born, Caren relocated to the UK and then finally to New Zealand - which she now calls home. Caren loves what she does and is passionate about helping people move to New Zealand.

Caren’s best piece of advice for a successful relocation is to appreciate that

life in New Zealand is different to your ‘home’ country.

Originally from England, Sarah moved to New Zealand in 2010 and quickly embraced the Kiwi way of life – especially the outdoorsy and

adventurous bit. There aren’t many things ending with ‘ing’ she hasn’t tried,

including zorbing and bungy jumping. “Say yes to anything and everything” is

Sarah’s advice for wannabe Kiwis.

I’ve been in Australia four months, having lived here 10 years ago as a backpacker. My fiancé and I decided to move here to escape the chaos of London. Living in Sydney is like being on a permanent holiday! If you’re planning a move, ask friends, colleagues or the Working In

team for tips.

Jay was born in Fiji and moved to New Zealand in the early 90s. He loves to travel,

but believes there is no greater place in world than NZ because of the culture and

landscape. His hobbies include rugby, tennis and anything with an electrical

current. His advice to migrants is - be open-minded and socialise with Kiwis. Then

you’ll get to experience the real NZ!

This is my third year in NZ. My friends crack up when I tell them that even on the weekends I wake up at 7am - that

used to be the time I got in! Maybe I am becoming a real DIY-loving Kiwi - the

other day I hung my first picture ever...

Western Australia is regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful and popular destinations, with the State’s capital Perth ranked in the top 10 most liveable cities in the world.Western Australia boasts more than glorious sunshine, endless beaches and outdoor fun – it is also the leading economy in the island nation, with record low unemployment and strong growth.

As a key exporter of minerals throughout Asia, Western Australia’s economic outlook for the medium to long term remains strong. The State has an estimated $280.9 billion worth of current or prospective major investment projects. Projects already under construction in the State reached a record of $121.1 billion as of September 2012.

Based on Monash University’s modelling projections, Western Australia will experience strong employment growth of an additional 170,000 positions by 2015. It is anticipated that over half of these will be in the higher skilled occupational categories, including professionals, managers, administrators, technicians and trade workers.

Not all of Western Australia’s economic growth derives from its thriving resources sector. The State has seen expansion across many other sectors, including tourism, world class cultural and sporting events, restaurants, entertainment and retail districts - ensuring that the world’s most isolated city grows more vibrant and exciting each year.

The Government of Western Australia is now looking for skilled workers wishing to contribute to its economy and enjoy the relaxed lifestyle and beautiful surroundings for which the State is world renowned.

Western Australia has many locations and lifestyles to choose from, from the cool wine regions and forests of the south west, to the rugged Kimberley ranges and tropical regions 2,400 kilometres north with a vast expanse of places and industries in between.

Western Australia’s Department of Training and Workforce Development has a website (www.migration.wa.gov.au) which is the gateway for prospective migrants who wish to explore living and working in Western Australia.

This web portal can help with:

• Working in Western Australia Tips on finding a job plus industries and occupations that have good employment prospects;

• Living in Western Australia Information on climate and weather; regions and cities; housing and accommodation; education and training; childcare and health and medical;

• Migration pathways and visas Information on migration pathways including the requirements for State sponsorship and the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme;

• Information for employers Information on how employers can access the national skilled migration system including information on the various employer sponsored migration visas; and

• Useful references Links to useful sites such as the Australian Government Department of Immigration and Citizenship, Tourism WA and the Small Business Development Corporation.

With so much information and support to help migrants on their way, it’s easy to see why Western Australia is the destination of choice for living and working.

There has never been a better time to become a part of the civil construction industry in Western Australia.

Western Australia is the centre of a resources investment boom, with several large projects underway in the north-west, including the massive Wheatstone and Gorgon liquefied natural gas projects. Many civil contracting firms are taking advantage of this once in a generation level of investment and are providing their services to major resources and energy companies including BHP Billiton, Chevron, Rio Tinto, Woodside, FMG and a host of other project developers.

To ensure Perth, the state’s capital, and other parts of Western Australia cope with its significant construction and investment boom, an unprecedented level of civil infrastructure works are in the final stages of planning or already underway.

Major projects already started in the Perth metropolitan area include the development of the Elizabeth Quay commercial/residential precinct on the city’s foreshore, the sinking of a substantial part of the city’s railway line and extensive upgrades to the metropolitan freeway and highway network.

The $1 billion Gateway WA project will address the expected doubling of the freight task and passenger air travel between now and 2031.

The land development sector is also thriving. Work on a major new community called Alkimos Beach in Perth’s northern suburbs is underway, with first land sales recently commencing.

Thanks to an innovative state government initiative, Royalties for Regions, proceeds from the resources boom are being shared throughout the state. Under one Royalties for Regions program, called SuperTowns, nine towns in the southern half of Western Australia are preparing and planning to attract thousands of new residents and workers to explore and enjoy life in some of the most beautiful parts of regional Western Australia.

Under the State Government’s Pilbara Cities plan, several towns in the north-west of the state are also benefiting from significant investments in infrastructure to transform them into more liveable communities and to reduce their dependence on fly-in, fly-out workforces.

The Federal Government also has an ambitious infrastructure agenda. Aside from providing key funding for some of the projects mentioned above, the Federal Government is rolling out the $40 billion National Broadband Network throughout Australia over the coming decade. Already work is underway in parts of Western Australia.

The opportunities for skilled workers in many civil engineering professions are unprecedented. While a lot of the work is happening in places far from Perth, there is a wide variety of work underway or planned right throughout the vast state of Western Australia.

With the large number of current and new projects underway, many civil contractors in Western Australia are experiencing acute shortages of skilled and semi-skilled labour. We encourage all suitably qualified civil professionals to strongly consider a move, whether temporary or permanent, to Western Australia to be a part of this unprecedented civil infrastructure boom.

Do you have a UK, Irish or European qualification in building and construction, electrical, air conditioning/refrigeration, plumbing, telecommunications or motor mechanics? Australia regulates most of these trades to varying degrees, which requires additional licenses to be obtained before you can start work in those occupations.

Skillbuild Training has been delivering courses to obtain occupational licenses in Australia, but we are now expanding to deliver the same training offshore.

What are the benefits?

• Turn up and start work straight away rather than having to attend courses in Australia. This means more money in your pocket! We charge the same price overseas as we do in Australia.

• Make yourself more attractive to prospective employers, who want workers who can start work straightaway with a minimum of fuss.

• Have a sound understanding of how these trade licenses operate in Australia and the opportunities in a new country which is short of skilled trades.

Skillbuild Training are electrical contractors as well, with 30 years’ industry experience. We use trade qualified trainers and have a policy of making sure those trainers have recent industry experience too.

Some of them have also come from the UK so can tell you all about the idiosyncrasies of Australian life. You also get to hear what it is like working in the trades in Australia from people you are likely to be working alongside.

Jump the queue by getting prepared at home - contact us for future courses we will be running in the UK and Ireland.

Call Australia home

The healthcare sector in Australia is a major employer, offering opportunities in both government and private sectors. Whilst there is strong emphasis placed on the tertiary education of allied health professionals, there is still a shortage within many disciplines and specific locations.Opportunities for specialist allied health professionals are still prevalent in Australia. These include roles for:

• Consultant Radiologists• Radiographers with specialist mammography, MRI

and/or CT experience• Sonographers with all ranges and levels of experience,

including dedicated vascular and cardiac specialists• Medical Physicists• Physiotherapists• Occupational Therapists• Speech Pathologists• Podiatrists

Your registration pathway will depend on your individual circumstances and numerous factors, including qualifications and experience. Age will also impact on the visa options available to suit you and your family.

Health professionals have the choice of temporary visas and permanent visas. These include the opportunity to apply for employer sponsored permanent residency; the highest priority applications. You may have a temporary visa to work in Australia within four weeks of lodgement, and some permanent categories can be approved in as little as three months. Age is not a barrier. Please don’t be discouraged if you are over 50.

The GHS experience

At Global Health Source our philosophy is to offer a holistic approach to both clients and candidates. During the last 14 years we have built strong relationships with clients all over Australia, and recruit on an ongoing basis to established facilities nationwide. Each discipline is managed by a specific consultant, who will oversee the entire recruitment process.

We understand the stresses and strains of making an overseas move and work with you to make your relocation as smooth as possible. We maintain contact with you after arrival and are on-hand to discuss issues related to settling in, especially during those first few months when you may be finding your new life a challenge.

Choosing Global Health Source offers you the opportunity to explore the kind of work and lifestyle that appeals most to you. Whether you intend to travel temporarily or permanently, our established relationships with clients in both public and private sectors, and widespread knowledge of locations throughout Australia, can assist you in making the best decision for you and your family. GHS excel in the facilitation of visas for health professionals of all ages. There is no consultancy fee for this service, just the cost of your visa application and incidentals.

In recent years, Australian organisations have begun to recognise the efficiencies resulting from increased IT spend. They are now looking to further invest in new technologies that may help reduce the costs of service delivery and improve operational efficiency. As a result, the 2013 enterprise IT spend down under is projected to soar to over A$73 billion. For suppliers and vendors who specialise in IT service offerings the outlook, much like the climate in Australia, is sunny.Across Australia, all major segments of IT spending are expected to increase across 2013. While the natural resources sector has received high profile media attention due to a period of robust investment in oil and gas and mining, it is the consumer-facing industries that will continue to drive innovation and the IT economy over the coming years. The communications, media and services sector is leading the vertical markets with the banking and securities sector also showing strong growth. Projected spend increases are expected in datacentre systems, software, IT and telecoms services, and the devices segment including PCs, tablets, and mobile phones.

IT priority projects during 2013 continue to focus on virtualisation, IT security, cloud storage management and record management. Front office systems which drive customer engagements are high on the agenda. CRM, BI and analytics, and investment in mobile solutions will also continue to flourish, all supporting a positive customer experience whilst driving a strong software and services

market. Beginning in 2014 markets aligned to big data and other information management initiatives, such as enterprise content management, data integration tools, and data quality tools, will begin to see increased levels of investment. Many organisations are moving towards a new technology set or are changing development methodologies to adopt an agile approach.

With pressure on Australia’s multi-billion digital technology economy to meet project demands, the need for talented and experienced international migrants is essential to meet the scarcity of key ICT skills. Many large organisations are developing strategic international recruitment strategies to place them ahead of the competition in the search for the best global talent to deliver key projects.

Australia is one of the world’s most beautiful destinations, with a glorious climate, endless stretches of stunning coastline, and an excellent work and lifestyle balance. It also offers one of the world’s highest employment rates. The flexible labour market in Australia has high levels of casual and part time work, coupled with a fairly high minimum wage. The attraction for the migration of skilled workers is easy to identify.

A technology boom is spreading through Australia as a result of wider recognition of the need to focus on ICT investments to improve efficiency, increase productivity, and offer a better customer experience down under. If you have the skills and talent, and a desire to see the world, perhaps Australia will be your next destination of choice.

So, you’ve given it some thought, had a chat with your nearest and dearest and watched enough episodes of Neighbours and Home & Away to have developed the required nasal twang to make you fit right into your new dream life in Australia. Then you made the fatal error of starting the real research and, before you knew it, you were curled up in the fetal position in the front room, singing Swing Low Sweet Chariot and promising yourself you’d never stray again.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. The process of migrating is huge, not just from a legislative point of view, but also logistics, costs, and perhaps most importantly, the emotional strain that it induces. There are few things in life more unsettling than living with one foot in two continents – unable to move forward in your old life and unable to put roots down in your new destination. We call this the M factor – migration ready, move ready and mightily motivated. Yes, it’s tongue-in-cheek, sure, but stay with me - there are definitely parallels to the TV show with a similar name.

Firstly, the world is full of people who think they have the M factor. For example, there are those who go at it like the proverbial bull in a china shop and then pull up at the last minute. This is after investing a significant amount of money and realising that they actually don’t have that last piece of drive to leave behind all that is familiar and comfortable in return for an uncertain future in a foreign land full of strangers. They’re like the folk who get to the auditions, all bluster and confidence, and then freeze in the wings while waiting for their turn.

Then there are those who are pushed into it by others - their partners, friends or family, who tell them repeatedly that it’s the right thing to do. But deep inside, they know that they really don’t want it and end up miserable, trapped in living out someone else’s dream.

But then there are those who are so right, and so ready, and don’t even know it. Or maybe they do know it, but just don’t know what to do with it.

That’s where working with an expert comes in. Definitely less judgmental than those on that TV show, a Registered Migration Agent will offer you sound, honest feedback on what your options are and advice on the process. The good ones will make sure that they spend time with you, understanding what you hope to achieve, what your goals are, and what your timeline expectations are, and then will put a plan in place to help you achieve those.

In some cases, you may get answers that you don’t want – but those answers might stop you making an expensive and humbling mistake. In other cases, you may get information that you hadn’t considered that put a new spin on the direction you thought you wanted to take. But in all cases, you’ll come away from the experience wiser and more knowledgeable.

Don’t take a chance on missing out on a life that you’ve always dreamed of by trying to undertake something as legally complex and emotionally challenging as an international relocation on your own. Speak to the experts – like Working In.

For construction and engineering professionals considering a move overseas, Canada is a hard choice to ignore. Not only does it boast spectacular scenery for exploring and an enviable lifestyle, it also offers world-leading projects that are currently suffering from acute skill shortages.Canada has a variety of mega-projects that could create a decade-long boom in domestic construction. These mega-projects are driven by a global demand for mining products, fossil fuels and hydroelectricity and include billion dollar projects in Newfoundland, British Columbia and Quebec.

As such, industry experts are predicting that construction employment will remain at all-time record high levels in Canada over the next decade as these resource projects peak. In fact, Canada needs an estimated 319,000 new construction workers between 2012 and 2020 just to keep up with current construction demands.

Yet as Canada’s ageing population – including skilled workers with decades of experience within the Canadian construction and engineering industries - begins its downshift to retirement, employers are struggling to find the labour to fulfil all of this work. Nationwide, an estimated 219,000 construction workers are expected to retire, meaning the industry will need to replace more than 20 per cent of its current workforce over the next decade.

This skills gap is being felt particularly strongly by the engineering labour markets. An analysis of these markets show a saturation of recent graduates with little or no experience but a shortage of experienced engineers with five or more years of practical experience and the specialised, experience-based technical skills that employers require.

As a result of these labour shortages, and in the hopes of attracting world-class talent, Canada is currently overhauling its immigration policies. This is expected to make the immigration system easier, more efficient and more flexible and will be open for applications from May 4, 2013.

Whether you’re seeking a lifestyle shift, the chance to experience a new culture alongside famously friendly inhabitants or leading, multi-million dollar projects, Canada could be the perfect next home for your construction and engineering skills.

Coming off the heels of the global economic meltdown of 2008 and the continuing European sovereign debt crisis, the classic mantra for buying real estate “location, location, location” has now been replaced with “jobs, jobs, jobs”. Savvy investors such as Mortimer Zuckerman and Jorge Perez figured this out early in their careers, building thousands of apartment buildings and office towers in the path of job growth. Both investors are currently on Forbes list of richest real estate billionaires. Astute buyers have always purchased properties with positive cash flow, potential for property value appreciation, investment safety and retirement security. The burning question is: where do you find these ideal properties? The answer is in areas that possess strong job growth accompanied by a stable economy. Canada’s northern resources, mainly oil and gas, are expeditiously turning Canada into a global economic powerhouse.

British Columbia is the shining beacon within Canada, leading Canada’s job growth with 51,700 new jobs created in 2012 alone. A booming economy is almost always followed by an increase in population growth which creates a demand for housing. A shortage of housing supply combined with a high population growth results in housing prices being driven upwards as you can’t create more raw land (unless you live in Dubai). BC’s natural gas industry alone has the potential to create $1.5 trillion of economic activity over the next 30 years.

In addition to a solid investment, British Columbians enjoy a higher quality of life than average. British Columbia is the most active and environmentally rich province. It has Canada’s lowest personal provincial income tax rates, an abundance of natural resources and offers diverse recreational activities – set between the Pacific Ocean in the west and the Rocky Mountains in the east, residents have the option of camping, hiking, fishing, boating, beachcombing, golfing, skiing, etc.

British Columbia has over 280 communities across the province, from close-knot small towns to larger urban centres like Vancouver. Whatever you are looking for, British Columbia has it. British Columbia even boasts Canada’s highest overall education levels and highest life expectancy.

With recent changes to skilled worker immigration programs, there are more options available for overseas people wishing to immigrate to British Columbia. Skilled trades are highly sought out and generously compensated in Canada in comparison to average pay levels for the same jobs offered overseas. Skilled workers are selected as permanent residents based on their education, work experience, knowledge of English and/or French, and other criteria that have been shown to help them become economically established in Canada. Immigrating is a lengthy process but the rewards and future security are well worth the investment.

Real estate is the investment vehicle that has created more wealth than any other financial instrument in history. With its abundance of natural resources, strong currency, stable economy and rapid job growth, there has never been a better time to call British Columbia home!

Beginning 30 years ago, I started on my career path in Canada’s oil and gas industry and I am still enjoying it. Over the years I have benefitted

from the exceptional opportunity to travel not just across Canada but throughout the world. While my travels have elevated my experience and exposure to diverse working experiences, I would say some of the greatest learnings for me have come from meeting people from all over the world, many of whom started their careers also in Canada’s oil patch or had some opportunity to work in Canada throughout their careers. What makes Canada unique as a training ground are the wide ranging opportunities, whether it be oilfield related trades, professional careers in oil and gas or starting from the ground up in the field. Canadian companies are becoming increasingly involved in supporting employee development either in-house or through institutions such as universities and/or technical training schools. I purposely used “and/or” in the preceding sentence because that was my experience. I began 30 years ago as a tradesman repairing all manner of rigs including service, drilling, seismic, heli-portable and rat-hole rigs and because I was open to change and challenge I was provided with the opportunity to return to school through company education plans and eventually achieved a MBA supported and sponsored by my employer.

Over the years I have been afforded a diversity of professional roles having gained invaluable experience in operations, human resources, safety, training, procurement, asset management and much more. What all of this did was provide

me with a well-rounded background and great insights that act as a foundation for the leadership position I now hold.

The other important aspect of gaining a career in oil and gas in Canada is the exposure to leading edge technology, innovation, safety and cooperation between service providers and producers. The well site a lot of times becomes the laboratory for testing new down hole technologies, new equipment and new operating procedures. Learning management of change processes in support of in-field research and development lends itself to attaining high levels of communication skills, leadership and safety. People that work their way through a career in the Canadian oil and gas industry are highly respected and desirable to employ in other parts of the world because of the exceptional reputation employees trained and developed in Canada have for the knowledge they hold and their ability to get the work done safely, efficiently and productively.

There are 17 subsectors of Canada’s petroleum services besides drilling and service rigs, which include everything from pumping services, coiled tubing, and manufacturing. Jobs span from field work to engineering, petroleum technologist and drilling fluids specialists. There are opportunities abound in Canada for careers and for world class training and education. Canada’s oil and gas industry is a major destination for those people looking to be well trained and well respected petroleum service professionals.

I have worked on four continents both on-shore and off-shore. I have worked with exceptional people all over the world, which alone has been an excellent education. I confidently extend an invitation to those that are interested to come to Canada to begin and enjoy a career either here or use it to go abroad or back home with the knowledge that you have been trained by the best in a best of class environment!

Having had the opportunity to live and work in four different countries, I can honestly say I am proud of the healthcare system here in my country.

I am born and raised in Ontario. My mother was a nurse and I have a sister who is currently a nurse, another sister is a doctor of genetics, and my father and brother have both served as Chairman and member on the Board of Governors for the local hospital. Does this make me an expert? By no means, however I can hopefully provide some insight through my perspective.

Canadian healthcare is provided through a publicly funded system (i.e. like the NHS in the UK) and the government guarantees the quality of care across the country through provincially administered programs.

The Canadian public, having been introduced to socialised medicine (its roots starting in 1940s), strongly support a public system as opposed to a for-profit system. The Government of Canada spends approximately 10.4% of the GDP on healthcare which is slightly above the OECD average.

Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) has many functions in Canada. This department helps employees and employers with a range of services and they work closely with Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). One report they publish is The Canadian Occupational Projection System (COPD), which forecasts summaries for all healthcare occupations from 2011 to 2020.

The clusters are listed as follows:

a) Physicians, dentists and veterinarians

b) Optometrists, chiropractors and other health diagnosing and treating professionals

c) Pharmacists, dietitians and nutritionists

d) Therapy and assessment professionals

e) Nurse supervisors and registered nurses

f) Medical technologists/technicians (except dental health)

g) Technical occupations in dental health care

h) Other technical occupations in healthcare (except dental)

i) Assisting occupations in support of health services

The COPD predicts the opportunities in the next decade - the ‘hot’ employment areas are highlighted above.

Job Futures is another resource provided by HRSDC which can provide a specific overview of the prospects of almost any occupation. HRSDC lists the future prospects of any occupation in three simple categories – poor, fair and good.

Of the 51 listed healthcare occupations, only chiropractors, medical laboratory technicians, veterinary and animal health techs, denturists, dental technologists and dental assistants are listed in my province as being fair over the next cycle period. All other 45 healthcare occupations are rated as good.

Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has recently had a high demand occupations list, encouraging some trades and occupations to Canada. It’s interesting to note that 33% of the occupations listed have been in healthcare.

Registration and licensing are a provincial matter and research into your occupation can show you what is required to become regulated in your profession in Canada.

We are the second largest country in the world and take the highest migrants per capita then any other. We have a lot of room for new Canadians. See you soon!

It was midnight and Fady Nashat was exhausted after a trip to the United States. He waited as an immigration officer reviewed his documents at Halifax Stanfield International Airport in Nova Scotia, Canada. “And he just said, ‘Welcome home’ and that really hit me,” Nashat recalls. He is proud to call Nova Scotia home. With help from the Nova Scotia Nominee Program, Nashat became a permanent resident of Canada in 2009.

His journey began in 2007 when he left his family and friends in Cairo, Egypt, to spend his final year of undergraduate studies at Cape Breton University in Nova Scotia.

For centuries, Nova Scotia has been welcoming visitors with open arms, a tradition that has led to its diverse culture. New arrivals often become lifelong residents, contributing to Nova Scotia’s economic and social development.

“I wanted to see what it feels like to go in a different country, speak a different language all the time, to communicate with different people, get out of my comfort zone and reach out and see what’s out there in life,” Nashat says about his decision to study abroad.

“Cape Breton was a really nice spot because people there are very, very welcoming. They really spend the time with you. I feel like in huge cities this luxury doesn’t exist.”

Nashat has also found a strong sense of community in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The certified project management professional is a project co-ordinator at NTT DATA Canada, Inc., formerly Keane, Canada, Inc.

“I always call working at my job the superman department,” he says, describing how it follows projects from start to finish for NTT DATA clients. Nashat’s role includes software development. He gets to focus on the hardware side in his part-time work as an IBM technician lead for Kelly Services.

In addition to his busy work schedule, Nashat makes time for studying, volunteering and going out with friends.

“If we’re not learning every day, there’s no progress,” says Nashat, whose future plans include becoming a senior project manager. He successfully completed the IT Infrastructure Library Foundation Examination and, also earned the credential of Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist.

Nashat happily shares what he’s learned with the community. He’s drawing on his project management skills as event chairman for the Canadian Diabetes Association’s Run for Diabetes – Halifax.

He also volunteers as a “connector” with the Greater Halifax Partnership’s Halifax Connector Program where he helps newcomers make professional contacts in their field. Nashat is giving back after benefiting as a participant.

Nashat also appreciates the architecture in Halifax, its ocean views and his short commute to work. When asked why he chose to stay in Nova Scotia after completing his degree he was quick to answer.

“It was hard for me not to. I’ve seen so much that I couldn’t say no. I’ve seen what the people are like here, how beautiful the environment is, how clean and empty the streets are … I’ve built a lot of friendships here in Nova Scotia and built a really great community.”

Canada’s immigration policies and procedures are constantly changing and it is important to keep up to date, especially as these changes may affect your application. If you can’t keep up, I’d suggest hiring a professional, to help you navigate the constantly changing rules and regulations.Regulated consultants are professionals who are equipped with the latest information on immigration law, procedures and practices and go about their business according to a strict, enforceable Code of Professional Ethics.

Navigating 2013 and beyondCitizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) accepts applications for permanent residence under the following categories:

1) Family: For those with close family ties to Canada;2) Canadian Experience Class: For those with recent study

or work experience in Canada;3) Economic: For qualified trades people and professionals;4) Business: For investors and self-employed applicants;5) Provincial nomination: For those settling in a specific

provincial region;6) Humanitarian: For those with unique and compassionate

circumstances.

In addition there are a number of temporary (work permit and study permit) visa classes.

The first step to take is to consider exactly what you are looking for. Do you intend to relocate to Canada permanently or temporarily? Your answer will determine which visa class or classes and application fees will apply to you.

As we stand today, the major changes are the following:

Federal Skilled Trade Visa (FSTP)This is a new visa category introduced in January 2013. To apply, you must meet the following criteria:

• plan to live outside the province of Quebec;• meet the required levels in English or French;• have at least two years of full-time work experience in a

skilled trade within the five years before you apply;• meet all job requirements as set out in the National

Occupational Classification (NOC); and• have an offer of full-time employment for a total period of

at least one year;

Or

• a certificate of qualification in that skilled trade issued by a provincial or territorial body.

Your work experience must be in a trade included on the CIC Skilled Trades occupation list.

Changes to the Federal Skilled Worker Category (FSWP)CIC uses a points system to assess all candidates who want to apply for permanent residence in Canada under the FSWP. A candidate must obtain at least 67 points to qualify (this is unchanged since September 2003).

As of July 1, 2012, CIC has stopped accepting applications under the FSWP and will start accepting applications again on May 4, 2013 with a revised points grid.

The FSWP selects immigrants based on their ability to succeed in Canada, and CIC is introducing a number of changes to FSWP.

Language: CIC is significantly increasing the maximum points awarded for the applicant’s proficiency in English or French. Language is now the most important factor on the points table.

Canada’s visa system: a look ahead to Canada’s immigration system in 2013By Dennis Brazolot, RCIC

Page 51: Mar2013 winternational magazine

49

Age: The revised points table benefits younger immigrants by awarding a maximum of 12 points up to age 35, with diminishing points from 35 to age 46. There will be no points given after age 46; however, workers aged 47 or older will continue to be eligible to apply should they qualify.

Education: The new regulations require a mandatory assessment of foreign educational credentials to determine their equivalency to an educational credential in Canada.

Adaptability: Points will now be available for the spouse’s English or French language ability.

Overall, the new and revised FSWP will enable CIC to select younger skilled workers, proficient in English or French, who can integrate more rapidly and successfully into the Canadian labour market and be active members of the workforce for a longer period of time.

CIC is constantly looking at ways to improve its systems and processes. Make sure you keep up-to-date with any changes that may affect you and your dream of relocating to Canada.

Haere mai to New Zealand(Maori for welcome). With a distinct cultural heritage, vastly varied landscapes and laidback locals, New Zealand offers an enviable new life to professionals. The demand for skills remains high, especially as the Christchurch rebuild gathers pace, and New Zealand is happy to look internationally to fill its skill shortages. Beyond the progressive career opportunities, there’s snow-capped mountains to explore, bubbling mud pools to gawp in awe at and plenty of activites ending in “ing” - walking, surfing, snorkelling, bungee jumping, sailing... if it’s an outdoor idyll you’re after, look no further than New Zealand.

We all dream of a better life, usually after winning the lottery. Now, living in another country won’t necessarily change that dream, but it may make the reality easier to bear. What makes New Zealand so wonderful? Well, perhaps it’s because it isn’t where you come from! Maybe it’s the climate, or the people. With such a beautiful assortment of natural wonders, wildlife, waterways and settlements, New Zealand has something for everyone. The old adage of the grass being greener … well, it’s quite true. New Zealand is one of the greenest westernised countries you could imagine in both appearance and attitude. Spending time in-front of the TV watching your life slip by just isn’t an option as New Zealanders are such an active bunch. With an intuitive sense of adventure, the running, tramping (like rambling but cooler), cycling, sailing and general outdoorsy past times are infectious. With most of New Zealand experiencing at least 2,000 hours of sunshine annually, it’s hard to resist being outdoors.

New Zealand is a wonderful country of opposites, with beautiful beaches, snowy peaks, sand dunes and glaciers. The vast expanse of rolling hills, farm land and forests is breath-taking. Talking of grass, New Zealand is one of the top five dairy exporters in the world. The top five countries supply around 90% of dairy products on the international market. For each person who lives here, New Zealand produces 100kg of butter and 65kg of cheese each year. That’s a lot of dairy!

All of this is perhaps why there’s such an attraction to this corner of the world. In 2011-2012 1,341,122 visa holders entered New Zealand. This is a number which has been steadily rising over the last few years.

But life isn’t all one long holiday, although it may feel like it when you are doing something you’d never do at home, such as commuting to work on a ferry, or climbing a volcano at the weekend. But surely that’s a good thing? It serves as a constant reminder why the process of migrating was worth it. However, even on the other side of the world, the holiday isn’t eternal and some hard graft has to be done in order to enjoy the pleasures New Zealand holds.

Starting work in a new country is always a daunting thing – no matter what your occupation may be. In 2011-2012, 170,202 people entered New Zealand with visas allowing them to work. Most of these were based on their skills or offers of employment already in hand. For a country of little over four million, this is a huge influx of migrants. So many people make the dream a reality. Like with any new adventure the key is to be open minded, flexible and prepared to be challenged.

BritsNZ Ltd has over 35 years’ worth of experience in financial services, predominately within the UK pensions’ arena. Eight of those years have been spent as a front line adviser in the UK, and we now have nine plus years in New Zealand.

In general terms, most UK company and personal pensions can be transferred to NZ. There are some serious tax issues to be aware of and there are very strict rules (imposed by the UK HMRC) on how and where you can transfer your benefits to - and then how and when you can access those benefits.

We offer a range of packages as follows:

• UK pension transfer only (UK or NZ based) • Full service emigration package • Financial migration package only

We can also make bespoke packages for some people, depending on their own situation – crucially you are never a number to us. Having emigrated ourselves, we know how important it is that you have a completely personal and ethical service (no matter which package you may choose) as emigrating is a major, life-changing but intensely personal event!

Hire A Hubby is one of New Zealand’sbest known, most successfulservices franchises

Just ask Shaun Penprase, winner of the Hubby Search 2009 Nissan Ute! Shaun was drawn as the winner from 25 new Hire A Hubbys who purchased their franchise during the 2009 Nationwide Hubby Search campaign.Shaun and his wife Louise came to New Zealand from the United Kingdom in July 2009. Their story is similar to many UK couples who come out to New Zealand to begin a new life. While Louise had a job lined up, Shaun needed a suitable venture so he could take advantage of his passion for DIY and his people skills.Working for himself in his own sustainable, profitable business – with enough time for family and making new friends – was the reason behind his decision to purchase one of the Hire A Hubby franchise areas in Auckland.Eight years ago, Hire A Hubby was launched into New Zealand. There was a real opportunity in the market for a professional home maintenance service as customers were finding that they couldn’t find tradespeople to do urgent jobs around the home.

Now, Hire A Hubby is a household name and Hubbies undertake much, much more than just urgent maintenance calls. With the motto ‘from the front gate to the back fence – and everything in between’, Hire A Hubby is positioned well as the single point of contact for all the jobs around the home. A Hire A Hubby franchise is a great lifestyle choice, and puts you in control of your own destiny.Investment in a Hire A Hubby franchise is NZ$45,000 including the start up package, training and industry leading accountancy software.

VentureTARANAKITe Puna Umanga

Around the world there aren’t many places where you can ski and surf on the same day. Of those, there are even fewer that offer you both a lifestyle and job opportunities as well. But Taranaki, a funky little region on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island, offers you all this and more. The province is legendary – literally. Maori legend has it that the picture-perfect mountain at the heart of the region - which stood in for Mt Fuji in the Tom Cruise movie The Last Samurai – ended up on its current site after losing a battle for the heart of pretty Mount Pihanga.

These days the environment is behind an enviable lifestyle, in more ways than one. The Taranaki lifestyle is so good that the region’s capital city, New Plymouth, was crowned the best small city in the world at the Liveable Communities Awards. Influential Kiwi magazine North & South judged it New Zealand’s best place to live, work and play in 2008.

Outside of business hours the region’s landscape gets well utilised, with dozens of surf breaks dotted around its coast, plus hundreds of miles of walking and hiking trails – ranging from the sedate to the seriously extreme – and dozens of parks, gardens and beaches to explore.

The land is also driving the region’s economy, and it’s one of the world’s sweet spots when it comes to job opportunities and economic growth. This strong performance – New Plymouth is consistently amongst the best performing cities in New Zealand – is fuelled by a region rich in what the locals call ‘Black Gold’ (oil and gas) and ‘White Gold’ (dairy production).

Taranaki is the place to be if you’re looking to progress your career in the oil and gas and engineering fields, with all of New Zealand’s oil and gas production in the region, meaning you can work in the industry without living in the middle of a desert or an ocean, and tap into that legendary lifestyle easily.

Spreading the word about Taranaki’s many charms and career opportunities is the job of Venture Taranaki, the Regional Development Agency and first point of contact if you’re thinking about a move to New Zealand or you’ve got skills in oil and gas, engineering, health or business.

“Taranaki is one of those places where people come for a visit or a short contract and end up never leaving,” says Venture Taranaki’s Carrie Thorne, who came here from the UK herself on a one-year working holiday visa nine years ago, and never left.

“We’ve got it all, really, from a landscape perfect for outdoor adventures, job opportunities with really innovative companies, a fantastic cafe culture, impressive local amenities and an events calendar that’s one of New Zealand’s most dynamic.”

Swap Sides is the flagship campaign to get more people to the region, and compares the realities of life in other parts of the world with life in Taranaki.

“In Taranaki it’s pretty hard to be more than a few minutes away from your work, the beach, or the mountain and rush-hour usually only takes a few minutes,” says Carrie.

“In contrast to living in many parts of the world, Taranaki is a really easy place to live, which means you get more time back in your day to do the things you love.”

If you’re looking at New Zealand, look no further than Taranaki at www.swapsides.co.nz, check out the jobs currently on offer at www.taranaki.info/jobs or get in touch with Carrie at [email protected].

Christchurch has been through a tough couple of years but as the new civil construction season approaches coupled with demolition reaching its conclusion, there will be a significant increase of activity surrounding the city’s rebuild. Much of the work so far has been a temporary fix but as we go forward projects will focus on the replacement and rebuilding of the city’s infrastructure. This includes close to 3,000 commercial buildings and 15,000 homes. The Christchurch Central Development Unit (CCDU) has just released the city’s blueprint meaning that everyone can work towards solutions.

Do you have the skills Christchurch needs? Earthquakes by their very nature are indiscriminate and so experience in all engineering disciplines will be required. New Zealand is gearing up for this colossal project and as it gathers momentum, we will need somewhere between 25,000 - 30,000 people to participate.

Recruitment will occur in the following two areas:

Civil infrastructure – currently employing circa 800 – expected to grow to 3,000 staff. The local market has been 100% utilised and those from other parts of the country are returning home – leaving significant vacancies. This is the sector where currently the most progress is being made in relation to interviewing of overseas based candidates.

• Senior Project Manager • Project Manager • Site Manager • Project Engineer

Commercial buildings – the real crux of the future workload. As the rebuild gains momentum this is when the real recruitment drive for overseas based candidates is anticipated.

• Construction Managers • Project Managers • Commercial Managers • Contract Managers • Quantity Surveyors • Estimators • Design Managers • Site Managers

So – not only will the projects be career defining but you will also make a significant humanitarian contribution and in the process gain awesome international exposure. You’ll also enjoy a better lifestyle for you and your family.

Are you right for Christchurch? We have compiled a 60-page booklet that provides you with the answers you need to help you decide if Christchurch is right for you and to help you make your move to Christchurch a successful one.

We have also produced a 12-page booklet all about moving to New Zealand.

Finally we have put together a 14-page brochure comprising a series of articles published in ‘The Press’ explaining the Christchurch CBD blueprint.

If you’re serious about being part of the rebuild of Christchurch then you need to read these free reports.

The Christchurch rebuild, following the devastating 2010/2011 earthquakes, is the biggest economic event in New Zealand’s history. And it is well underway. Signs of redevelopment are everywhere and the Canterbury economy is booming – growing at more than twice the rate of the rest of the country in the past year. The current National-led Government has earmarked $5.5 billion for the region’s recovery and rebuild, while latest insurance claim estimates top $30 billion. This is, on a New Zealand scale, simply immense.

As the Member of Parliament for Christchurch Central, one of this city’s most damaged areas, I am excited about the plans for Christchurch and the blueprint for the new city centre. It has involved extensive professional and community consultation and collaboration, and many anticipate the new CBD will soon become hot property because of its redesigned compact layout.

You may well have seen images of the ReStart Container Mall, with its colourful, innovative combinations and inviting atmosphere, while the recently opened central city Enterprise Precinct and Innovation Hub (EPIC) has set out to become a world class campus for innovation-based Canterbury companies.

We look forward to the redevelopment of a number of new civic assets, including a 2,000-seat convention centre, new bus interchange, the Avon river green belt and a new 35,000-seat stadium. All over the city and Canterbury region, major infrastructure repair and reconstruction is well underway.

CEO of the Canterbury Employers’ Chambers of Commerce Peter Townsend is invigorated by the huge financial possibilities in the recovery, anticipating significant involvement as the rebuild continues to gather momentum. He emphasises this is going to go on for a long time.

And given the sheer scale of the rebuild, this means we need to recruit especially skilled people, particularly geotechnical experts and engineers, construction managers and supervisors. Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Minister Hon Gerry Brownlee says in the past year, demand for construction project managers and supervisors increased 88% and 356% respectively, such is the volume and scale of projects beginning to come on stream.

Migrant input into the rebuild is genuinely welcome. Systems are in place to meet the demand and provide for a rise in population. We want to ensure there is a long-term vision for the rebuild – that this is no boom and bust scenario. We want to sustain a growing population, a booming economy, and a thriving new city.

Christchurch is already renowned for its quality schooling, healthy family lifestyle and of course, abundant and diverse recreational opportunities within a very short drive from the city. But with the skills, people power, capital, and palpable enthusiasm pouring into the rebuild, it can only get better.

Indeed, Lonely Planet recently ranked Christchurch in the Top Ten cities for 2013, describing it as “rising from the rubble with a breath-taking mix of spirit, determination and flair”. I couldn’t agree more. We are not just rebuilding a city, we are creating something quite special. Christchurch has a vision to become one of the best modern cities of the world and we invite you to be part of it.

New Zealand has an excellent public health system that is free or low cost for residents and NZ citizens. It gives families peace of mind, knowing that the care they need will be there, when they need it. The Minister of Health Tony Ryall has said New Zealand’s District Health Boards (DHBs) “are employing more doctors and more nurses than ever before. And there’s a greater focus on preventing illness”.DHBs are responsible for providing or funding the provision of health and disability services throughout New Zealand. Health will receive the largest increase in government spending, with $435 million available to help fund cost pressures and new initiatives in 2012/13. “Despite tight financial times, the Government is spending $14.12 billion in 2012/13 on health – the biggest investment ever”, Mr Ryall states.

There are 20 DHBs across the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Health professionals coming to New Zealand are spoilt for choice given the variety of lifestyle options available. Whether it is the buzz of a large metropolitan city or small rural town, there is always access to beautiful beaches, mountains and the great outdoors.

New Zealand has a multicultural society and is already home to many overseas health professionals. There are fantastic opportunities for professionals to share knowledge and gain skills in New Zealand’s healthcare system which is comparable to other developed countries around the world.

Currently in New Zealand there are opportunities available for a wide range of health professionals – doctors, nurses, midwives, mental health, allied health, technical and public health. Now is the time to take a look at these opportunities!

For professional and lifestyle reasons New Zealand is the place you should be. A study by the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine reported that doctors who trained in the UK and have chosen to work in NZ often stay in their adopted country because of higher levels of job satisfaction and a preference for the lifestyle. As well as training and long term career opportunities, respondents also said a better lifestyle, family and travel were other reasons for relocating.* Explore what opportunities New Zealand can provide in your professional area as well as the lifestyle you have always dreamed of.

Where there are areas of need, DHBs may be able to assist successful candidates with registration and relocation support. Many DHBs have licensed immigration advisors on hand who can also provide advice on the most appropriate visa options. It can take many months of prior planning to relocate a family or an individual, so the support of DHB recruiters can take the stress out of a sometimes stressful situation.

If you are motivated to take that next step, New Zealand is an exciting place to live and work. A career in the public health sector offers numerous opportunities to develop professionally. A good work-life balance means you’ll also have time to experience the Kiwi lifestyle for yourself and your family.

The New Zealand technology landscape is a diverse and interesting environment made up of a variety of opportunities for the aspiring new Kiwi. The industry totals around 50,000 people and while native New Zealanders make up the majority of people there is almost every conceivable nationality represented. IT is a burgeoning export darling – it sits at number five on our list of foreign export earnings. With a “GDP” of around $NZ20 billion it represents a sizeable chunk of our spending and income. On the list of the top five paid salaried roles in NZ, IT roles always occupy four of these slots. Geographically, Auckland and Wellington are the powerhouses of IT in NZ. The great majority of corporates are headquartered in Auckland and the entrepreneurial startups also feature heavily. As such the multinational vendors (IBM, Dimension Data, Fujitsu and Unisys being the largest in diminishing order) are also headquartered in Auckland. Wellington is the home of government and those that supply services or product to government. Regional centres tend to be small in technology and are support-oriented businesses.

Broadly speaking you will likely end up finding work in one of two types of organisation; the end user of technology (public sector, enterprise and SMB corporates and so on) or a technology vendor (systems integrators, software houses, re-sellers etc). The former is focused on providing a solution

to the broader organisations objectives and the IT ‘mission’ is very service-centric (but no less exciting or challenging than the vendor world).

The latter is businesses made up of technologists either creating, implementing or supporting the technology itself. Both are equally important to the health and success of the overall economy.

The actual technology itself is a mix of leading/bleeding edge and legacy. In some organisations you’ll find COBOL developers sitting next to mobile applications and Silverlight gurus, whereas others focus solely on new innovative technologies. One of the greatest differences you’re likely to experience in NZ is the proliferation of small teams – it’s a simple virtue of the size of the organisations. This leads to the second main anomaly; employees are typically very broadly skilled and you’ll likely see them as a specialist rather than a generalist.

This environmental aspect leads directly to the prevalent attitudes of Kiwi technologists. We are a nation of do-ers (more than leaders) and pride ourselves on our can-do mindset. We foster thinking in solutions not problems and love a spirited debate. Hierarchy is rarely a hindrance and you should not be surprised to see a developer disagreeing about a resolution or feature with the CEO. This mentality also manifests itself as companies punching above their weight and the businesses that buy the solutions taking risks you may not ordinarily associate with corporates.
