Personal Training with Mary BrownBUILD MUSCLE, IMPROVE HEALTH: BENEFITS ASSOCIATED WITHRESISTANCE EXERCISEIt is important to realize that muscles are the engines of our bodies. Musclesare where combustion occurs, where energy is released, where power isproduced, and where movement originates. Muscles have long beenrecognized as key factors in physical performance and athletic achievement.Clearly, our muscular condition has a major influence on both our physicaland mental health. It is likely that age-related muscle loss is a starting point for a cascade ofphysiological problems, including bone loss, metabolic rate reduction, fatgain, diabetes, heart disease, and mortality. Adults who do not performresistance exercise lose almost 5 lbs of muscle every decade before age 50and up to 10 lbs of muscle every decade after age 50. Numerous studies have shown that muscle mass may be increased in adultsof all ages, including individuals in their 90’s. A research study with morethan 1600 participants (ages 21 through 80), revealed a 3-lb increase in leanmuscle weight after 10 weeks of standard strength training and a follow-upstudy showed approximately twice as much lean weight gain after 9 monthsof resistance exercise. Similar increases in lean weight were attained forstrength training frequencies of 2 and 3 days per week and among all of theage groups.Muscle loss may initiate a cascade of health issues including bone loss, metabolic rate reduction, fat gain, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, heartdisease, and mortality. Resistance training has been shown to add musclemass, increase bone mineral density, raise resting metabolic rate, decreasebody fat, improve glycemic control, reduce resting blood pressure, improveblood lipid profiles, enhance physical function, improve mental health, andreverse specific aging factors in skeletal muscle. Beginning participantsshould see their physician before beginning and exercise program. Contactthe Tennis Pro Shop front desk for information on a Program Design Package.Thank you, Your Trainer, Mary Brown

The golf course will be set up for you to play where, with your ability, you are hitting the same irons into the green that a tourplayer would use. This is done by moving a players teeing ground to anappropriate spot so that their drive will leave them a club similar in loft tothat of the tour player. An example of this would be that if Jordan Spieth were to play #1 MountainView he would hit his driver and then one of his wedges into the green. Formost of the membership we would have to find a teeing area for you to hita drive that would get you far enough down the fairway to where you couldhit a wedge for your second shot.Members looking to enjoy the Tour Experience can do so as an individual oras a group. On The Rules by Bruce Flower Page 6

The United States Golf Association and the R and A revised the Rules of Golfevery four years. The year 2016 is the quadrennial year, so here’s a peek at thenewest changes.

1. Anchoring the club (putter) announced over 2 years ago, anchoringthe club while making a stroke is now prohibited. The rule change(Rule 16 - 16) pertains to making a stroke, not the use of equipment. In layman’s terms, a player must swing the club freely while making astroke. The long putter is still legal. It just can’t be anchored againstthe body while making a stroke.

2. Rule 18-2, ball moving after address, has been changed so there is nolonger an automatic 1 stroke penalty. All relevant information is to beused to determine the cause. If it is more likely than not the playercaused the ball to move after address, the penalty is 1stroke and theball must be replaced. If not, the ball is played as it lies. The old Rule18-2b is now obsolete.

3. The use of unusual or abnormal equipment is no longer an automaticdisqualification under Rule 14-3. The first offense now carries a 2stroke penalty in stroke play and loss of hole in match play.

4. Distance measuring devices are allowed even if the device has featuresother than distance measuring, so long as the other features are notused. This must still be a local rule permitting the use of the devices.

5. Animal hoof prints on the putting green may be repaired as groundunder repair, so long as the proper local rule has been adopted. Seedecision 33-8/32.

6. A player turning in a score lower than that actually made is no lon-ger an automatic disqualification if the player was unaware of penal-ty strokes incurred on the hole. It’s now a 2 stroke penalty forfailing to include the penalty. Of course, the penalty strokes have tobe added as well. This is an added exception to Rule 6-6d

7. Possessing a 15th club on the start of a round and the player realizesit before starting the round can now be resolved by the player de-claring the club out of play. See decision 4-4c/1.

8. A provisional ball dropped can be picked up if the original ball isfound within the 5-minute search time, so long as a stroke was notmade at the provisional ball. Decision 27-2b/5 covers this.

There is another charge covering shared equipment other than golf carts, but that will be for another day. There seems to be a long-rangetendency to simplify the Rules and make them easier to understand. Ithink the next Rules change cycle will simplify the drop/place procedure, and I’ve heard talk among rules officials that dropping will be virtuallyeliminated in favor of placing. We’ll see. Happy golfing and keep it onthe short grass.

Marietta Country Club Handicap Committee Update

We recently completed an audit of handicap postings at our club. The audit covered the four day period of Oct 20-22nd and Oct 24th. The review of postingwas conducted as of November 6th, well past the semi-monthly revision date of October 31st. The results were as follows:

Date Total Sign-in Practice Non GHIN Eligible Posted Not Posted Post %Tuesday, October 20, 2015 104 10 4 90 62 28 68.9%Wednesday, October 21, 2015 91 16 7 68 44 24 64.7%Thursday, October 22, 2015 82 4 8 70 40 30 57.1%Saturday, October 24, 2015 130 6 10 114 78 36 68.4%Total 407 36 29 342 224 118 65.5%

Clearly, it was disappointing to learn that less than two-thirds of our members who are in the Golf Handicap Index Network (GHIN) are posting their scoresin a timely manner. For MCC to maintain its usage of the USGA Handicap System, its members must post their scores with those failing to do soputting our club’s reputation at risk.Next stepsIn January, The Handicap Committee will meet with The Golf Committee to adopt a plan for improving score postings and also review the newGSGA Handicap Regulations effect January 1, 2016. In the meantime, below are a few suggestions to improve posting accuracy.Frequent Questions:Q: I don’t post because I don’t use my handicap any longer.A: Contact the Pro Shop to have your account suspendedQ: What if I am just playing a practice round?A: On the sign-in sheet, mark “Cart”, “Push Cart” or “Walk” with an “x/P”, i.e. for 9-hole push cart mark “5/P”Q: How much time do I have to post my score?A: USGA rule 5-2a states that posting scores immediately following the round is preferred. This can be done by all members in the respective men’s orlady’s locker rooms. Members also have the ability to post via internet using the GSGA site or the GHIN App. The Handicap Committee is allowed toclarify this will adoption of a local rule. In this regard, we are discussing a rule of not more than 24 hours after completion of the round. We welcome yourcomments on adoption of this local rule.
