A re you one of those folks who have said to yourself, "Someday I'm going to write a book?" Boy, I sure am. I knew from childhood that someday I would sit down and write out a best seller. And you know what -- some day I might actually do that. But if you are one of those folks, and you've made the attempt, like I have, many times over...you know what a long and diffi-cult process that can be. That's why I admire the folks right here in Preble County who have actually become published authors. This August, at the West Elkton Friends Meeting House, more than twenty of these tenacious and gifted writers will be com-ing together for the first time. They will display, sign and sell their creative works.

T he Preble County Council on Aging and Outreach Services of the Preble County District Library co-sponsored a program pre-

sented by City of Eaton Fire & EMS Chief, Jack Royer.

Over thirty people attended the Fire & Life Safety Issues program held at the Senior Center on March 13. Chief Royer and various other fire department members presented a highly informative program, discussing things like the safest way to put out a stovetop fire

and the number and placement of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Everyone who at-

tended thought the program was very worthwhile.

“I’m off to Ace

to buy a fire

extinguisher!”

Pinkerton’s Secret / Eric Lerner: This romantic adventure conjures up the passionate life story of the Civil War era's legendary private eye, recounting dramatic exploits and his clandestine love affair with his female partner.

Allan Pinkerton / James Mackay: Though Pinkerton started the first U.S. detective agency after success-fully uncovering a counterfeit ring, little was known about him. The au-thor does an excellent job of tracing Pinkerton's early life and his arrival in the United States from Scotland.

Then he examines better-known aspects of Pinkerton's career -- his part in Lincoln's train ride through Balti-more, investigation of the Confederate spy Rose Greenhow, and association with Gen. George McClellan, his mentor and hero. Mackay is perhaps too apologetic in his treatment of Pinkerton's intelligence reports to McClellan, which vastly overstated the num-ber of Confederate troops, and he blames McClellan's lack of initiative on political intrigue from Washington. Nevertheless, Mackay's work will appeal greatly to historians and Civil War specialists.Mark E. Ellis, Albany State

The Texas Cowboy Cookbook: A History in Recipes and Photos / Robb Walsh: Robb Walsh digs deep into the culinary culture of the Texas cowpunchers, beginning with the Mexican vaqueros and their chile-based cui-sine. He gives overdue credit to the largely unsung black cowboys (one in four cowboys was black, and many of those were cooks). Cowgirls also played a role…

Here are a mouthwatering variety of recipes that include campfire and chuckwagon favorites as well as the sophisticated creations of the New Cowboy Cuisine: • Meats and poultry: sirloin guisada, cinnamon chicken, coffee- rubbed tenderloin • Stews and one-pot meals: chili, gumbo, fideo con carne • Sides: scalloped potatoes, onion rings, pole beans, field peas • Desserts and breads: peach cobbler, sourdough biscuits,

old-fashioned preserves Through over a hundred evocative photos and a hundred recipes, historical sources, and the words of the cowboys (and cowgirls) them-selves, the food lore of the Lone Star cowboy

is brought vividly to life.

recipes!

Aromatic Gardens The Complete Book of Garlic / Ted Meredith: Worldwide, garlic cultivation occupies over 2 million acres of farmland, an area that has more than doubled since 1970. Yet even garlic fanciers may be unable to tell hardneck from softneck, or

Purple Stripe from Rocambole, not to mention the hundreds of cultivated varieties grown today, many with distinct differences in taste and character. In fact, the wealth of garlic varieties in nearly a dozen horticultural groups rivals that of corn, carrots, apples, and peaches. This book is the most com-prehensive and in-depth guide available. Bring the Garden Indoors

Kim Parker Home / Kim Parker: Kim Parker’s rise to international renown as a designer and artist—her bedding and bath line launched at Bloomingdale’s, and she recently introduced new dinnerware and giftware collections with Spode—is truly the story of the American dream. a thoughtful look at the artist’s crea-tive process, shows how anyone can create an “interior garden” in their home or apartment. A de-signer with a funky flair, Parker combines her own fantastic floral prints with unconventional flea market finds, fashionable antiques, and unique modern pieces to cre-ate a vibrant, colorful look. Don’t toss extra plants & seeds — swap ‘em!

Organize a Plant Swap

• Divide, collect: for a fall swap, divide perennials that bloomed in the spring or early summer. For a spring swap, divide late summer and fall bloomers. When collecting seeds, store them in airtight containers and store in a cool, dry place.

• Collect your gardening friends: invitations, posters/flyers, gardening forums, newspapers.

• Determine size of swap: This will affect where you plan to hold the swap. • What to swap: perennial favorites, successful new additions to garden • Label offerings: be sure to include all information with your plants • Condition of plants: make sure that the plants you bring are healthy and

disease-free. • Pick your swap site: easily accessible, plenty of parking, alternative site

for inclement weather, access to water to keep plants fresh on hot days. • Determine trade rules before the swap: are pre -trades acceptable? Will

your exchange be first-come, first-serve? Have you made a list of plants to be exchanged?

• Do NOT propagate Trademarked or Patented plants: they are marked

with ® (Registered) or ™ (Trademarked) after the name.

• Plant exchange forums: www.plantswap.net http://forums2.gardenweb.com/forums/explant/ • Internet search: try plant swap or plant exchange

Beyond Books: Your Donations are Vital Marlene Ressler, Outreach Coordinator, would like to extend a HUGE Thank You to Eaton McDonalds manager, Randy Blaich. The restaurant very generously donated the delicious food that was served at March’s Beyond Books program. The theme was, of course, fast food.

It is hometown generosity like this that makes our nursing home programs possible!

Stories as told to Marlene during nursing home visits…

I was having a conversation with one of my nursing

home ladies the other day and she began reminiscing

about how she used to go to a Carnegie Library sixty

years ago. She told me how she loved going to the

library. “Reading is one’s foundation for life,” she told

me. She also thinks of the library and reading every

time she hears my name. She told me how much she

has appreciated me for bringing

books on tape to her over the years. It gladdens my heart to be able to

bring the library to those who are

no longer able to get there

on their own.

Carnegie libraries were built with money donated by Scottish-American businessman Andrew Carnegie. Over 2,500 Carnegie

libraries were built, including public and university libraries.

History The National Road: A Photo-graphic Journey / Cecil Carvell: The National Road/U.S. Route 40 was the nation's first federally funded interstate high-way and is the most historic transportation corridor in the United States. Each mile of this scenic route reveals a cultural

landscape that traces back hundreds of years.

Logging Long Ago: Historic Postcard Views / Mary L. Martin et al.: Follow the his-tory of logging as it unfolds across the United States, from the virgin forests of the east, to the towering redwoods of the West Coast. Historic pho-tography, much of it beauti-fully hand tinted, captures

images of the early woods, the woodsman, and the machines of this important industry.

Tales Behind the Tombstones: The deaths and burials of the Old West's most nefarious outlaws, notorious women, and celebrated lawmen / Chris Enss

Frontier Justice in the Wild West: Bungled, Bizarre, and Fascinating Executions: On the Western Frontier, where jailhouses were few and gunsling-ing, cattle rustling, and stagecoach rob-beries were common, legal executions served as both a deterrent and as enter-tainment. In some cases, invitations sum-moned spectators - and they came in

droves. From 1854 to 1910, in the lawless towns of the Old West, more than one thousand men (and two women) were executed. And while most of the punishments went off "without a hitch," a handful of necktie parties and firing squads stand out in the annals of history.

Just Bizarre

The New Baby Name Survey / Bruce Lansky: How to pick a name that makes a favorable impression for your child. Based on data from a new survey of over 100,000 par-ents. The book lets parents know what people think of the most popular names and helps them pick names for their babies that make favorable impressions. The New Baby Name Survey also includes the origin, meaning, and famous namesakes for each name, as well as a name “profile” written by Bruce Lansky, the #1 name in baby name books.

Choosing baby names is important business! Whaaa! Too bad our parents didn’t think so...

Tiger Force / Michael Sallah & Mitch Weiss: At the outset of the Vietnam War, the Army created an experimental fighting unit that became known as "Tiger Force." The Tigers were to be made up of the cream of the crop-the very best and bravest soldiers the American military could offer. They would be given a long leash, allowed to operate in the field with less supervision. Their mission was to seek out en-emy compounds and hiding places so that

bombing runs could be accurately targeted. They were to go where no troops had gone, to become one with the jungle, to leave them-selves behind and get deep inside the enemy's mind.

The experiment went terribly wrong.
