Kidzone KG and 1st Grade Small Group Unit 30 Session 4 – Younger Elementary Sunday, Mar 8, 2015 1 TEACHER BIBLE STUDY Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus Luke 16:1931 In Luke 16, Jesus taught His disciples about money. The Pharisees listened, and they did not like what they heard. The Pharisees loved money. (See Luke 16:14.) Then Jesus told them a parable about two men. The first man was rich, wearing expensive clothes and feasting daily. The second man, whose name was Lazarus, was poor and sick. He sat outside the rich man’s gate. Lazarus suffered greatly, and he died. Then the rich man died too. Nothing the rich man had on earth helped him in eternity. The parable reveals that the rich man went to Hades. Hades is a Greek word that translates to “hell,” the place of the dead. Luke says that the rich man was in torment there. (Luke 16:23) He looked up and saw Abraham, the father of the Jewish faith. At Abraham’s side was the poor man, Lazarus. Lazarus was comforted in heaven while the rich man suffered in hell. There is a great chasm between heaven and hell, and no one can cross it. No one can change his mind and trust in Jesus after he has died. Remember that having wealth on earth is not a sin, and living in poverty is not a oneway ticket to heaven. Lazarus was saved by faith, but the rich man was consumed by his wealth. He devoted his life to living in luxury, and he did not love God or other people. In his suffering, he asked Abraham to warn his brothers. Abraham refused. Sending Lazarus would not help. The rich man’s brothers had access to God’s Word, and Scripture is clear about salvation. Even a miracle would not convince the brothers, as Jesus raised His friend Lazarus from the dead and the religious leaders still plotted to kill Him. (See John 11:4353.) As you teach kids about Jesus’ parable, clearly share the gospel. Getting into heaven has nothing to do with who you know, what you wear, or what you do. Entering into heaven requires faith in Jesus, the Son of God. The Bible says those who trust in Jesus will be with God forever, but those who reject Him will suffer without God forever. TEACHER  BIBLE  STUDY  Parable  of  the  Rich  Man  and  Lazarus

Luke  16:19-‐31  In  Luke  16,  Jesus  taught  His  disciples  about  money.

Remember  that  having  wealth  on  earth  is  not  a  sin,  and  living  in  poverty  is  not  a  one-‐way  ticket  to  heaven.

(See  John  11:43-‐53.)

As  you  teach  kids  about  Jesus’  parable,  clearly  share  the  gospel.

THE  BIBLE  STORY

Parable  of  the  Rich  Man  and  Lazarus

Luke  16:19-‐31  Jesus  had  been  teaching  His  disciples.  He  told  them  parables,  or  stories,  to  help  them  understand  things  about  God  and  His  kingdom.  One  day,  Jesus  told  His  disciples  a  parable  about  a  rich  man  and  a  poor  man.

Jesus  said,  “Every  day,  a  rich  man  dressed  in  nice  clothes—purple  and  fine  linen.  He  ate  whatever  he  wanted.  But  a  poor  man  named  Lazarus  sat  at  the  rich  man’s  gate.  Lazarus’s  body  was  covered  with  sores,  and  he  was  hungry.  Lazarus  wished  he  could  eat  even  the  crumbs  and  scraps  of  food  that  fell  on  the  floor  under  the  rich  man’s  table.  Instead,  wild  dogs  came  and  licked  his  sores.

“One  day,  Lazarus  died.  The  angels  carried  him  to  heaven,  where  Abraham  was.  The  rich  man  died  too,  and  he  was  buried.  The  rich  man  did  not  go  to  heaven;  he  suffered  without  God  in  the  place  where  there  is  sadness  and  pain.  The  rich  man  looked  up,  and  he  could  see  Abraham  far  away  in  heaven  with  Lazarus.

“The  rich  man  called  out,  ‘Father  Abraham!  Have  mercy  on  me!  Send  Lazarus  to  help  me.  I  am  suffering!’

“Abraham  replied,  ‘Son,  remember  your  life.  You  had  so  many  good  things,  and  Lazarus  had  nothing  but  trouble.  Now  Lazarus  is  comforted  here,  while  you  are  suffering.’

“Then  Abraham  said,  ‘There  is  a  great  divide  between  us,  like  a  pit,  and  no  one  from  here  can  cross  over  to  you;  neither  can  anyone  from  there  cross  over  to  us.’

“The  rich  man  said,  ‘Then  father  Abraham,  please  send  Lazarus  to  my  father’s  house  on  earth.  I  have  five  brothers.  He  could  warn  them  so  that  they  will  not  come  to  this  place  of  suffering  and  pain  too.’

“But  Abraham  said,  ‘They  have  the  Scriptures—the  Law  of  Moses  and  the  writings  of  the  prophets.  They  should  read  and  learn  from  that.’  “The  rich  man  argued,  ‘No,  father  Abraham!  But  if  someone  came

to  them  from  the  dead,  then  they  will  repent.  They  will  turn  from  their  sin  and  turn  to  God.’

“But  Abraham  said,  ‘If  they  don’t  listen  to  the  Scriptures,  to  Moses  and  the  prophets,  then  they  will  not  listen  even  if  someone  comes  back  from  the  dead.’  ”

Christ  Connection:  Those  who  receive  salvation  from  Jesus  have  changed  hearts;  they  treasure  Jesus  above  any  earthly  treasure.  Getting  into  heaven  has  nothing  to  do  with  who  you  know,  what  you  wear,  or  what  you  do.  Entering  into  heaven  requires  faith  in  Jesus,  the  Son  of  God.

SMALL  GROUP  OPENING  Session  Title:  Parable  of  the  Rich  Man  and  Lazarus    Bible  Passage:  Luke  16:19-‐31    Big  Picture  Question:  What  happens  when  we  die?  Those  who  trust  in  Jesus  will  be  with  God  forever.  Those  who  reject  Him  will  suffer  without  God  forever.    Key  Passage:  Matthew  13:10-‐11    Unit  Christ  Connection:  Jesus  taught  in  parables  so  His  followers  would  understand  how  to  live  in  anticipation  of  His  second  coming.      Welcome  time:

Arriving  Activity:  Money  count    • jars  or  clear  plastic  cups,  3

• coins

• paper

• pens

• hand  sanitizer

Place  a  predetermined  amount  of  coins  in  three  separate  jars  or  clear  plastic  cups.  Make  sure  you  know  how  much  money  is  in  each  container.  Place  a  piece  of  paper  and  a  pen  next  to  each  container.  Ask  the  kids  to  guess  how  much  money  is  in  each  one.  Another  option  is  to  place  a  container  of  change  in  the  middle  of  a  table.  Then  call  out  a  specific  amount  of  money,  and  see  which  kid  can  find  that  amount  first.

Say  •  How  many  of  you  like  to  buy  things?  To  buy  things,  you  need  money.  However,  some  things  cannot  be  bought.  Today,  we’ll  talk  about  a  man  who  had  lots  of  money,  but  he  didn’t  have  what  was  really  important.

• pencils

Guide  boys  and  girls  to  complete  the  activity  page.

Say  •We’ll  find  out  more  about  Lazarus  and  the  rich  man  in  just  a  few  moments.

Session  starter  (10  minutes)

Option  1:  Hungry  game    Invite  the  kids  to  form  a  circle.  Choose  a  volunteer.  The  volunteer  will  say,  “If  I  am  hungry,  I  want  a  _________.”  The  volunteer  must  fill  in  the  blank  with  a  food  that  starts  with  A.  The  kid  to  the  volunteer’s  left  must  say  the  sentence  with  a  food  that  starts  with  B.  Continue  clockwise  around  the  circle.  Provide  hints  if  a  kid  struggles.

Say  •  In  today’s  story  a  very  hungry  man  named  Lazarus  sat  outside  the  gate  of  a  rich  man  who  had  lots  of  food.  We  will  find  out  what  happened  when  the  rich  man  needs  Lazarus’s  help.

Option  2:  Choice  sticks    •  craft  sticks,  15  per  group

•  markers

Form  groups  of  three  kids.  Give  each  group  15  craft  sticks.  Invite  them  to  draw  a  shape  on  one  end  of  a  stick  and  a  matching  shape  on  the  end  of  another.  They  should  repeat  so  that  every  stick  but  one  has  a  shape  on  the  end  that  matches  another  stick.  Leave  one  stick  blank.  Invite  the  kids  to  mix  up  the  sticks  and  split  them  up.

Each  kid  should  have  five  sticks.  Each  kid  should  set  aside  any  matching  pairs.  They  should  then  mix  up  the  sticks  and  hold  the  end  with  the  shapes,  so  the  other  two  kids  can’t  see.  Then,  one  at  a  time,  each  kid  should  take  one  stick  from  another  member  of  the  group.  If  he  has  a  match,  he  should  discard  both  sticks.  Otherwise,  he  keeps  the  stick.  The  goal  is  to  discard  all  sticks  without  getting  the  blank  stick  at  the  end  of  the  game.

Say  •  Each  time,  you  had  to  choose  which  stick  to  select.  Once  the  game  was  over,  you  had  no  way  to  go  back.  In  today’s  Bible  story,  a  man  wanted  another  chance.

SMALL  GROUP  LEADER  Session  Title:  Parable  of  the  Rich  Man  and  Lazarus    Bible  Passage:  Luke  16:19-‐31    Big  Picture  Question:  What  happens  when  we  die?  Those  who  trust  in  Jesus  will  be  with  God  forever.  Those  who  reject  Him  will  suffer  without  God  forever.    Key  Passage:  Matthew  13:10-‐11    Unit  Christ  Connection:  Jesus  taught  in  parables  so  His  followers  would  understand  how  to  live  in  anticipation  of  His  second  coming.      Key  passage  activity  (5  minutes)  • Key  Passage  Slide  or  Poster

•  dry  erase  board  and  markers  (optional)

Make  sure  the  key  passage,  Matthew  13:10-‐11,  is  visible  for  each  child,  either  as  the  slide,  printed  poster,  or  written  on  a  dry  erase  board.  Read  the  verse  together.

Say  •  What  was  the  secret  of  today’s  parable?  Jesus  wanted  those  listening  to  know  that  getting  into  heaven  isn’t  about  riches,  fame,  or  even  what  you  do.  It’s  about  trusting  in  Jesus.  Let’s  play  a  game  to  help  us  memorize  our  key  passage.

Call  out  a  color.  Those  wearing  that  color  should  say  the  key  passage.  Then  call  out  something  expensive  the  kids  might  own,  like  an  electric  gaming  device.  Those  who  have  that  item  should  say  the  key  passage.  Call  out  a  good  deed  the  kids  might  have  accomplished,  such  as  washing  the  dishes  or  helping  their  mom  or  dad  care  for  a  sibling.  Those  who  have  ever  accomplished  that  task  should  say  the  key  passage  together.

Repeat  with  a  different  color,  item,  and  deed.  Then  talk  about  how  none  of  those  things  will  get  them  into  heaven.  Reaffirm  that  entering  heaven  requires  turning  away  from  sin  and  trusting  in  Jesus  to  save  us.

Say  •  In  which  division  of  the  Bible  is  the  Book  of  Luke  found?  (Gospels)  Who  wrote  the  Book  of  Luke?  (Luke)  Tell  me  something  about  Luke.  (He  was  a  doctor;  he  wrote  the  Book  of  Acts;  he  traveled  with  Paul.)

Use  the  small  group  visual  pack  to  show  kids  where  today’s  Bible  story  is  on  the  timeline.  Review  the  Bible  story  provided  using  the  bolded  text,  or  summarize  the  story  in  your  own  words.

Invite  the  kids  to  open  their  Bibles  to  Revelation  21.  Assign  verses  19-‐26  to  different  kids.  Assign  a  leader  to  read  verses  19-‐20.  Assign  kids  to  read  verses  21-‐26.  Explain  that  these  verses  describe  what  heaven  will  be  like.

Say  •  Many  of  the  people  listening  to  Jesus  didn’t  really  understand  how  to  get  into  heaven.  They  were  depending  on  their  own  good  things  to  get  them  there.  Is  that  how  you  get  to  heaven?  No,  only  faith  in  Jesus  gets  to  you  heaven.  Heaven  is  a  beautiful  place  where  there  is  no  pain  and  no  sickness.  Most  importantly,  it’s  a  place  where  believers  get  to  be  with  God.

Show  the  big  picture  question  slide  or  poster.

Say  •  What  happens  when  we  die?  Those  who  trust  in  Jesus  will  be  with  God  forever.  Those  who  reject  Him  will  suffer  without  God  forever.

Activity  choice  (10  minutes)

Option  1:  Left  or  right    •  tape

Tape  a  line  down  the  center  of  the  room.  Invite  the  kids  to  stand  on  the  line  facing  one  end  of  the  tape.  Explain  the  difference  between  right  and  left,  and  that  you  are  going  to  call  out  one  or  the  other.  The  goal  is  to  be  the  first  kid  to  step  to  the  correct  side.  Those  who  step  to  the  wrong  side  must  sit  out.

When  only  a  few  kids  remain,  eliminate  the  kid  who  is  last  to  make  the  correct  step  too.  The  winner  is  the  last  kid  on  the  line.  Play  again  as  time  allows.

Say  •  This  game  was  all  about  confusion,  but  God  doesn’t  want  us  to  be  confused  about  what  happens  when  we  die.  What  happens  when  we  die?  Those  who  trust  in  Jesus  will  be  with  God  forever.  Those  who  reject  Him  will  suffer  without  God  forever.

Print  the  gospel  plan  poster  for  each  kid  and  distribute  it,  along  with  a  piece  of  construction  paper  and  glue.  Demonstrate  how  to  glue  the  poster  onto  the  construction  paper,  creating  a  frame  around  it.  Let  the  kids  decorate  the  frame  with  markers  and  stickers.

Say  •With  your  parents’  permission,  tape  this  on  a  mirror  or  your  wall  at  home  to  remind  you  that  God  wants  us  to  share  the  gospel  with  others.  Only  through  faith  in  Jesus  can  people  go  to  heaven  when  they  die.

Say  •  Here’s  one  last  review  of  the  big  picture  question.  What  happens  when  we  die?  Those  who  trust  in  Jesus  will  be  with  God  forever.  Those  who  reject  Him  will  suffer  without  God  forever.

If  time  remains,  take  prayer  requests  or  allow  kids  to  complete  the  coloring  page  provided  with  this  session.  Pray,  thanking  God  for  providing  a  way  through  Jesus  for  us  to  get  to  heaven.  Pray  for  each  child  by  name,  asking  God  to  help  the  kids  understand  that  they  can  only  get  to  heaven  through  faith  in  Jesus.
