EDITOR’s MessageWe are well into new year 2017 after all the feasting and celebrations of the last couple of months – it was Christmas 2016, ushering in New Year 2017, welcoming the fire rooster of Chinese Lunar New Year 2017, and there has been a line up of activities at Warren, well enjoyed by many of our members and friends.

And we carry on with more celebrations and festivities at Warren! Truly there’s a time and season for everyone to find a reason to get together at Warren to eat, meet, play, enjoy - be happy!

Two popular outlets – Golfers’ Terrace (GT) and Water Hazard (WH) - are certainly venues worth re-visiting, again and again! From notices around the Clubhouse, most members would have since heard the news – our Club Management is taking over the management of GT and WT from Monday 27 March 2017! Why this decision? We could continue to let the existing or a new caterer run our outlets as have been done over the years when the contract with our existing contract ends in March 2017. We have deliberated this at great length at Social Sub-Committee and MC meetings. A key consideration is our strife to continuously upgrade so as to bring our members and guests fresh experiences, ambience, menus, and of course, good food and service at our F&B outlets. Additionally, from a financial perspective, if we continue to have our members’ patronage, and we suggest increased patronage at GT and WH, the revenue shall be well reflected in Warren’s annual P&L for the benefit of Warren members. From data presented to the MC, the Club is subsidising the operations of GT and WH to the tune of $500K a year. By doing self-catering, we envisage we will be able to reduce that figure to $300K, thereby achieving a net savings of $200K per annum, which will go some way towards narrowing our cash outflow.

See you at GT and WH!

WT Mar/April 2017 celebrates Easter at Warren! And what is more apt than an easter-themed egg-citing party for the Kids’ Club on 16 April 2017. Expect an Easter egg hunt no less, chocolates and lots of Easter bunnies goodies. Sign up and come have an egg-citing time with the kids! And if you are stopping for a little moment to ask what has eggs and bunnies and chocolates got to do with Easter - turn to the centrepage feature for some little tales to tell the kids.

Now, a quick peep into the calendar of May and June at Warren – for sure, WT shall be celebrating Mother’s Day, the annual Family Day – tune in for more information closer to the dates. Not to forget Warren’s Annual General Meeting will be held on 5 May 2017. The venue will be at the still-new Tee Garden (Sports Building, next to Tennis Court; registration will commence at 6.00pm). Snacks will be served before the meeting, and a buffet dinner and beer at the end of the meeting. We urge members to come and support Warren’s plans for members for 2017.

Knowing that there’s so much more activities and celebrations ahead, I am already feeling a little nostalgic that this shall be ‘my’ last issue of WT as I shall be stepping down from this MC portfolio, having since served the full 2 terms of 4 years. I thank all members and colleagues for your kind support and consideration. We also say ‘Goodbye’ to Shahrun, our wonderful concept-designer-photographer-talent-member of the WT editorial team, who will be leaving us on 2 March 2017 to take up a new career with a top international

advertising agency. We wish him all the best in his new career.

But we shall all still be around at Warren – golfing, sporting, playing, eating, cheering… Happy Easter and Happy Holidays, everyone!

Eileen LuiMarcom Convenor

Captain’s MessageOh Kian Beng

The Lunar New Year has come and gone. Our Club was not only decked in an exuberant mix of Chinese New Year colours in February but was also filled with festive joy as our members came together to celebrate this joyous occasion.

On 4 February, we held our annual Fa Cai Cup to great success. An afternoon game was initially planned, just like what we did in previous years. However, considering that our golf course is operating under 9 holes this time due to the renovation, this meant that lesser members would be able to join in the game. With that in mind, we decided to open up the morning session and make it a full day tournament. This proved to be a good move as our golfers were obviously thrilled with the arrangement, evident from the fact that all slots for the tournament were taken up within merely a few days of registration.

It is indeed heartening to always receive such overwhelming response from our members. This not only displays our golfers’ support for our events, it also bears testament to the efforts that we have put in.

Our Junior Golfers are making us very proud again. In our recent Gold Medal held in January 2017, the Overall Best Gross Titles for both the Men’s and Ladies’ Divisions landed in the arms of two of our Junior Golfers, Donovan Lee and Jacqueline Young respectively! And at the 2016 HSBC Youth Golf Challenge 2nd Leg held in December 2016, another Junior Golfer, Denise Wong, topped the Girls’ “A” Division. Bravo! I look very much forward to seeing them carve a niche for themselves in this wonderful world of golf.

Golfers, please note. The R&A and the USGA has introduced a new local rule to the Rules of Golf that eliminates the penalty when a ball is accidentally moved on the putting green. The local rule will be available for any committee in charge of a golf competition to use starting from 1 January 2017. It will be adopted by The R&A and the USGA in all

of their championships, qualifying competitions and international matches. Warren has also adopted this new local rule from 1 January 2017. Turn over to pages 16 and 17 for a detailed explanation and Q&A on this new local rule, provided by the R&A and USGA.

We have been running our Weekday Guest Fee promotion for quite some time by now. The promotion has been pretty successful in encouraging our golfers to bring along their guests for a round of golf at the Club and

I believe our golfers have made good use of this promotion. As the saying goes “All good things must come to an end”. This special promotion will be ending by the end of April 2017. But I’m sure better things will come our way. We will definitely work on coming up with other initiatives in the future. Do share with us any ideas or suggestions too.

Our golf course renovation is nearing its completion very soon. Keep a lookout for news coming your way.

“Truly there’s a time and season for

everyone to find a reason to get together at Warren to eat, meet, play, enjoy - be happy!”

Stanley has been extremely helpful in teaching Gym users how to use the equipment.

“I first met Buan (Sports Assistant) in May last year when I was deciding whether to join the Club as a Social member. I remember that I walked into the Billiard Room and was greeted warmly by Buan who patiently answered my many questions about bookings, lockers, guests, league players etc. I was truly impressed with his great attitude and the impeccable condition of the Billiard Room and tables. I went to the Reception to sign up immediately. Since then, I got to know him better and my good impression of him never changed. He is friendly and helpful to all visitors of the Billiard Room.

He has good knowledge of Billiards. Although he is not a qualified referee, on the few occasions that I observed how he conducted the refereeing during our Snooker League games, as a qualified referee myself, I would say he is competent.

Together with Frederick (Sports Assistant) as a team, they keep the Billiard Room and tables in such a good condition. I really enjoy playing Billiard in this good-conditioned and friendly environment.”

- Ang Chor Ho (Member)26 Jan 2017

“I would like to thank Winnie (F&B Service Staff). She had helped to return my money (more than $1,000) which I left behind at the Golfers’ Terrace.”

- Sing Han Cheng (Member)26 Jan 2017

“Ever since I joined the Club in May 2016, I have been very impressed with Frederick’s (Sports Assistant) work attitude and personal behaviour. He does his job really well, has a very positive attitude and good knowledge on Billiard games. He is a qualified Billiards referee and he helped to referee our Cuesports Snooker League games. He had no complaints, even if the games finished well past 11.00pm.

He is courteous and friendly to every visitor of the Billiard Room, but this does not mean he would compromise on the standard and regulations there. He would not hesitate to uphold these rules and regulations eg. he would tell players who throw the balls instead of hitting them with the cue sticks not to do so, not to climb up the table to hit the balls etc. Just yesterday, he rejected a group of teenagers as they were not wearing covered shoes. He told them in a very nice manner and explained to them the reason.

I observed on a few occasions that he would give a short briefing and coaching to those who are new to the game so that they will be able to start playing and appreciate the game. Together with Buan (Sports Assistant), they maintain the Billiard Room and tables in a very good condition. I have to say I really enjoy playing in the Billiard Room with good-conditioned tables and friendly staff. Thank you!”

- Ang Chor Ho (Member)26 Jan 2017

“Tiffany (F&B Service Staff) is always pleasant, smiling and cheerful. She greets customers, regardless they are members or not. I am always happy to be served by her. She is an exceptional service staff. This is not to say the other service staff are not good enough. Winnie (F&B Service Staff) and the other staff are all cheerful and very pleasant. They are all very commendable.”

1) How does the Local Rule operate? The Local Rule eliminates the penalty for any accidental movement of a ball or ball-marker on the putting green. If the ball was accidentally moved by the player, his partner, his opponent, or any of their caddies or equipment, there is no penalty and the ball is to be replaced and played from its original location

2) Does the Local Rule apply to a ball moved by the wind? No. If the ball was moved as a result of wind, water or some other natural cause (including gravity), the ball must be played as it lies from its new location without penalty.

3) Why is the Local Rule being introduced? The movement of a ball on a putting green has been one of the many topics discussed as part of The R&A’s and USGA’s ongoing Rules Modernisation initiative to consider comprehensive changes to the Rules of Golf. For these particular situations, it was noted that the shape, slope and condition of many putting greens today increase the chances that a ball at rest on a putting green will move, and it can be difficult to determine whether a player caused the ball to move or whether the ball was moved by wind or other natural causes. Furthermore, when a ball moves while the player is doing nothing more than taking normal actions to prepare for a stroke, it may seem unfair for the player to be penalised.

4) Why not apply this Local Rule everywhere on the course? As part of our continued review of the Rules related to ball movement, and in particular our Rules Modernisation initiative, it was noted that almost all “ball moved” instances occur on the putting green, and involve very minimal movement. Frequently, the movement occurs as the player is simply taking reasonable actions in preparing for a stroke and the ball can easily be replaced. These considerations are not the same when the ball lies off the putting green and we believe it is important to retain the penalty for those instances to reinforce the principle that the ball should be played as it lies.

5) Why not wait and change the Rule as part of the next Rules cycle? As part of the Rules Modernisation initiative being pursued by The R&A and USGA, we plan to preview a comprehensive set of proposed changes in 2017. Given the significant ongoing issues that have arisen with the application of Rule 18-2 over the last several years, we concluded that this particular change should be available to all committees now, through the adoption of a Local Rule.

6) Rule 18-2 was just changed. Why are you now making an additional change through the Local Rule? The Rules of Golf are an ever-evolving code, and Rule 18-2 is a good example. The most recent revision was the withdrawal of Rule 18-2b (ball moving after address) in January 2016. This change removed the presumption that the player caused the ball to move when it moved after being addressed. However, while this change was for the benefit of the player as it removed the automatic penalty, it has led to increased questions on what caused the ball to move, especially on the putting green. The Local Rule is now being introduced to put less emphasis on the cause of the ball’s movement on the putting green.

7) Why not make this a permanent change to the Rules, instead of just a Local Rule? The Rules of Golf are typically revised every four years, with the latest version taking effect in January 2016. The introduction of the Local Rule is outside the normal revision cycle and enables committees to eliminate the penalty for ball-moved situations on the putting green. While the relevant Rules are under consideration as part of the comprehensive Rules Modernisation project, we believed it was important to allow for committees to address this issue in advance of the full changes from that project taking effect.

8) Is the Local Rule only recommended for tournaments and elite level play? No. While it is anticipated that the Local Rule will be widely adopted throughout the professional and elite-level amateur tournaments (including all USGA and R&A championships, qualifiers and international matches), its use is recommended for all levels of play. The adoption of the Local Rule is ultimately up to each individual committee’s discretion.

9) IstheLocalRuleineffectonlyifadoptedforcertaincompetitions?Similar to other Local Rules (for example, the Local Rule for distance-measuring devices or the Local Rule that provides relief for an embedded ball through the green), the Committee in charge of the course must put the Local Rule into effect in order for it to apply. If the Committee does not put the Local Rule into effect, Rules 18-2, 18-3, 20-1, and the associated penalties, will apply for ball-moved situations on the putting green. If you are unsure if the Committee has adopted the Local Rule, you should ask the Committee or a member of the professional staff.

10) As a referee, how do I proceed when a player on the putting green calls me over and says his ball moved?Just as before, you will need to weigh all available evidence for the given situation to determine whether the player was responsible for the ball’s movement. As provided in Decision 18-2/0.5, a determination must be made if the player was more likely than not to have caused the ball to move.If the player did cause the ball to move, next, you need to confirm if the movement was accidental. If the movement was accidental, the player incurs no penalty and must replace the ball. If the movement was not accidental, Rule 18-2 applies, and the player must replace the ball under penalty of one stroke. If the player did not cause the ball to move, the ball is played as it lies unless some other Rule applies (e.g. Rule 18-1).

11) What types of actions are considered accidental?Accidental movement can involve a variety of actions in which the player unintentionally moves his ball or ball-marker. Examples include: dropping the ball-marker on the ball, accidentally making contact with the ball when taking a practice swing near the ball, accidentally making contact when addressing the ball, etc.

12) What are some examples of actions that are not considered accidental? The Local Rule does not apply to any intentional lifting or moving of the ball. Examples include striking or moving the ball in anger, lifting the ball without marking it, etc.

So how did Easter go from a biblical event to the day cute bunnies leave pastel-coloured eggs all over the park?Easter is on different dates each year, between 21 March and 25 April, depending on when there’s a full moon in spring. Of course, we all know rabbits don’t lay eggs, nor are eggs involved in the biblical story of Easter.

One theory is that eggs relate to Easter symbolically: Rebirth.

Why do we have painted or decorated Easter eggs?Originally, eating eggs was not allowed by the old church during the week leading up to Easter (known as Holy Week). So any eggs laid that week were saved and dyed or decorated to make them ‘Holy Week eggs’, then given to children as gifts.

What’s with the Easter Bunny then? The first historical references to an Easter Bunny date to the 16th-century German tale. A mysterious creature named Oschter Haws, or Easter Hare, visited children while they slept and rewarded them for their good behaviour (similar to Santa). The children made nests for the hare, which would then lay coloured eggs in them.

One theory is that hares were also traditionally associated with new life, due to their high fertility rate.

It’s a ‘Bunny& Egg ‘ Tale

Happy Easter!

An Easter Trivia You’ d Like

To Know About

Every festival celebrated worldwide is entitled to have historical connotations attached to it. These events engrave ineradicable impression on the minds of many of us - young and old. The history of Easter is no different. It is considered as one of the oldest festivals celebrated today. There are many interesting and varying facts associated with Easter. To know at least one, read on.

Why are modern Easter eggs made of chocolate with hollow centre?Giving chocolate gifts is common at Easter time. The first chocolate eggs appeared in France and Germany in the 19th century but were bitter and hard. As chocolate-making techniques improved, hollow eggs like the ones we have today were developed. They very quickly became popular, and still are today.

So you think you are an ‘Eggspert? Hop along and join in the egg hunt with us at Warren this Easter !Here at the Club, we are also creating history of our own. For the first time ever, we invite you and your kids to join our adorable furry friend Easter Bunny in our quest for those elusive & fabled Easter eggs. And for Warren Kids’ Club members born in April, take note: It’s going to be twice the fun as we are also celebrating your birthdays with a party and special gifts. Turntopage26tofindoutmore!

GymOrientationProgramme

Build Your PowerMost of the movements made in a game of squash involve just a few steps, or a lunge, or some kind of rapid change of direction.

Being ‘fast’ in the traditional sporting sense where the game takes place on a larger field or playing area then, is not as important for the squash player as being explosive and able to accelerate quickly and powerfully. Speed off the mark is far more important in terms of being swift around the court in a game of squash, so power training is a key area to develop to become a better mover.

Being powerful also requires a good base of strength, an oft-forgotten attribute for the squash player. An additional benefit of training to develop this squash-specific strength and power is the increased efficiency allowed in your movement, due to the lower energy cost required for each action you take.

Develop Your CoordinationA key element that’s apparent in the very best squash movers, is the speed of their feet and their ability to make very quick short steps when approaching the ball and adjusting their position.

Many of our footwork and coordination sessions on the site utilise the speed/agility ladders. The ladders are used a lot in field sports such as football and rugby, to develop quick feet and movement skills. Ladder drills are also often used by physical therapists when working with youngsters with dyspraxia (a condition affecting physical co-ordination), so their benefits in developing footwork have a decent grounding in practical effect.

Squash Friendly with Former Members of

Jurong Country ClubSunday 5 February 2017

The Warren Squash team played host to former Jurong Country Club members for a squash friendly game. It was a great afternoon of squash and socialising between players from both teams where everyone was also treated to a spread of food between their matches.

Tips forSquash!

1.Eat a well balanced meal of protein and whole grain carbohydrates within two hours of your game. If you are unable to eat a full meal, at least have a snack within one hour of golfing to provide your body with some initial energy. Your snack should be 200 calories or so to last at least for the first few holes. Avoid sugary snacks which will produce an energy crash within an hour or two of eating.

2.Bring a snack of 200-300 calories to take in two to three hours into your game. You’ll be pleasantly surprised how much your energy and strength, not to mention your mental focus, will improve with a small snack. Examples of good snacks might be a protein/sports bar (watch sugar content), a peanut butter sandwich or nuts and a piece of fruit. You need some good carbohydrates and protein for long lasting energy.

3.Avoid alcohol while golfing as alcohol is dehydrating, and a systemic depressant, slowing down muscle contractions and mental acuity and will eventually produce excess fatigue. All athletes rely on good hydration and nutrition to support their workouts and game play. Golf is no different. And, the long duration of the golf game compared to other recreational endeavours makes proper nutrition and hydration even more important. Start with these tips today, and watch your game immediately improve!

3TipstoIncreaseYourEnergyandEndurance for

Golf

What is a Gym Orientation? It is a tour-around to understand the benefits ofeach equipment. We will also advise on the properposture and the appropriate weight that eachindividual should be lifting.

This service is provided for individuals of all exercise levels, unfamiliar with the equipment or in need of a refresher course.

How long is a Gym Orientation and how should I dress? A Gym Orientation will take approximately 15 minutes. Please be in your proper workout gear for your Gym Orientation.

How do I schedule for a Gym Orientation Programme? To schedule your Gym Orientation, please contact the Gym at Tel: 6586 1266 orEmail: [email protected].

Golf is a game of endurance interspersed with bouts of power and strength. Your body needs proper nutrition and fluid intake to have the energy to play just as well on the 4th hole as the 14th. Unlike other aspects of golf fitness, proper hydration and nutrition can and will produce immediate improvements in energy and endurance during your golf game THIS weekend!

Practice In Real-TimeAlong with increasing your power, and developing your footwork/coordination, it’s important to also include ‘live’ drills where you put everything together in a real-world situation to fine-tune the improvements that you’ve built.

As you become more comfortable with your movements, the next stage is to start bringing the ball back into the equation and getting a coach or partner to feed you some balls at a slower pace, to really allow you to start thinking about the more technical practicalities of weight transfer, spacing, and utilising the split step. As this improves, you can then start speeding things up to a more match-specific tempo.
