You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures

forevermtore.

Psalms 16:11

I have never imagined that I would one day be in this position. When I fi rst met with Rev. Tommy Wong and the members of Cantonese Pastoral Search Committee, I was honest with them and told them that I wanted to be a teaching and preaching pastor in the Cantonese Division. To help sharing the pastoral work for the Cantonese congregation was my initial desire. Who would have guessed – almost two years later, I have become the Interim Senior Pastor who shoulders the responsibility for leading the pastoral team and meeting the spiritual needs of over 1,000 congregants.

The term “Interim” refers to a temporary role during a transitional period. My responsibilities are to lead the pastoral team and develop various types of church ministries until the new senior pastor arrives. However, it does not mean that I will not do my best to play the role. In fact, I have made a commitment to the church that despite the hurdles that I would have to face during the tenure of two years, I will defi nitely not give up and will keep going. In the meantime, I also place expectations on the congregations that at all levels, they should have a kingdom mindset. Of course, I understand that people have diff erent expectations from the church, and that they expect the church to meet their needs through various ministries. However, I sincerely hope that all congregants should give fi rst priority to God’s kingdom. Even though their needs cannot be fully satisfi ed, they should be willing to let the heavenly kingdom take precedence over their own needs.

The term “Senior” means having the most experience or being the eldest. However, based on my physical appearance, it is clear that I am not the eldest one in the pastoral team. This term also implies having power and authority. For me, however, one of the most important tasks for Interim Senior Pastor is to build a team. I see all the pastoral staff as a team; I see the pastoral staff together with the deacons (i.e. Deacon Board) as a team. I see Mandarin, English, Cantonese divisions and YLD as a team. I see the whole church as a team. Therefore, my expectation for the congregations is that you must be a member of the team. I believe that a Christian who participates in church gatherings regularly should always be a member of the team. On the other hand, if the team’s decisions are not in harmony with each individual’s idea, as long as the decisions do not violate God’s truth, the individuals should set aside his personal opinion and give support to the team’s decisions.

The term “Pastor” is not a profession, but a role that is sent by God to shepherd the church. One of the duties of a shepherd is to equip potential leaders and help nurture them, enabling ministries to continue to fl ourish. For church leaders, I expect that they are willing to equip themselves on the one hand and have broad minds on the other in order to pass the baton to the next generation. As a pastor, my responsibilities defi nitely include providing pastoral care and teaching, which are what I am called to do. I really hope that I will be able to focus my time on those activities instead of dealing with confl icts on individual or group basis. Therefore, I hope that all congregants will have a willing heart to be shepherded: to be cared for on the one hand and to be nurtured on the other.

In Christ, Pastor Edward H.

COMING UP

Living the Good NewsThe Good News is not meant to only be said, but lived. It is not meant to be hidden within a church, but to be shared with the community. It is not meant to be about our perfection, but is about a power breaking through our weakness that reaches into life.

Missionary Updates

2016/2017 Annual Review From: Eva Watt – serving in Macau with SEND International at Macau Cumberland Presbyte-rian Church Our Ministry Goals carrying on from 2016 to 2017 are: • Nurture Believers• Developing leaders• Outreach to University Students• Prepare my coworkers for my retirement

from the fi eld in May 2018 Fruits of Ministry generated during the past year: • Thank God I can passed on the role of

Children Ministries Coordinator to my full time ministry coworker started October.

• new comers from the marketplace continue to come to our Worship Service and small group because of the good witness of our Young Adults in their work place.

• We truly experience Acts 2:47 during 2016, God added to the number at our church weekly those who were being saved. We have seekers and new comers every week at our Sunday Worship. Some of them are young couples and some are couples with children. We also have new born babies as well - 3 in 2016 and 6 are coming in 2017. We ask God to grant us wisdom to disciple and shepherd this growing congregation.

• 13/11 we had baptism at our church and I conducted my fi rst baptismal service after my ordination. We have 5 adults and 3 children being baptized and one transfer membership.

• Teens group started to stabilized and willing

to invite their friends to come.• Through AWANA we are able to reach out

to non-christian family (children and their parents).

Prayers being answered by the Lord to meet our need:

• lack of space on Saturday afternoon for both AWANA and Teens Group

• lack of space for babies and parents on Sunday during worship

God allows us to rent the unit right next to our church starting Nov. 2016 and now provide space for the Teens group on Saturday and Children worship on Sunday. We also moved our church offi ce to the new unit and left the old offi ce space for the pre-schoolers’ Sunday School and the toddlers.

One of our key children workers got married in March 2016 and now joining the church of her husband (Sweet and Sour ^_^)This newly wed couple gradually fi nd our church is more suitable for them as a couple therefore they started to come back since Oc-tober 2016. ^_^

The fi eld is still very much in need of workers, we keep on praying for willing servants to join us to serve in this city. Please keep me and our ministry in your prayer!

Dear Parents,

May our Lord bless you with a joyful break from the school routine and have a safe and fun March Break holiday! This is an exciting month for our children ministry as our Children and Youth Choir will be performing the “Superhero Adventure about the Fruit of the Spirit” on March 4, 2017!

Our theme for this month is forgiveness. When our relationship with God was broken beyond repair, Jesus made it possible for us to have God’s forgiveness. Our memory verse for March also reminds us not only God forgave our sins, but also that we should forgive others instead of holding grudges against one another.

We pray that throughout March, individuals will let go of what they are holding against each other and choose to forgive. May our Lord bless us and make forgiveness a powerful virtue in the lives of kids and families in our church.

MEMORY VERSE:

COLOSSIANS 3 : 13 (NIV)“BEAR WITH EACH OTHER AND FORGIVE ONE ANOTHER IF ANY OF YOU HAS A

GRIEVANCE AGAINST SOMEONE. FORGIVE AS THE LORD FORGAVE YOU.”

Scripture Message

Week 1 LUKE 15:1-7We will focus on God’s love for us that went to great lengths to rescue us from our sins. Through this story of Lost Sheep, we pray that kids will remember that God forgives our sins.

God forgives you

Week 2 LUKE 15:11-24Through the parable of the Lost Son, Jesus teaches kids that forgiveness is a huge step for anyone, and everyone needs forgiveness.

Everyone needs to be forgiven, even me

Week 3 LUKE 15: 21-32We continue the parable of the Lost Son from last week. A closer look will be on the older brother who has obeyed his dad all his life. Kids will learn when we don’t forgive; we have the potential to miss out all that could happen through that relationship.

When you don’t forgive, you miss out

Week 4 MATTHEW 18: 21-35The parable tells the story of a servant who was caught when he did not forgive others like the King forgave him. Forgiveness comes in a full circle. God chose to forgive us and we should with forgiveness to others in return.

Since God forgave you, you should forgive others

Core Value #7 Equipped to Serve We believe that God gives the church spiritual leadership and that the task of the church is to equip and empower this leadership, who will in turn entrust to others and multiply.

Scriptures: 1 Corinthians 12:7; Ephesians 4:11-13; 2 Timothy 2:2

Be transformed by the renewal of your mind

For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. Romans 12:3
