Mitchum’s Marketplace Comes to Downtown Trappe
It’s obvious to anyone passing by the corner of Main Street and Maple Avenue that something is happening at the prior location of Defender Antiques. This property has been pur-chased by Brenda Tighe and her project partner, Douglas Halli-day. Tighe and Halliday plan to renovate the property (including demolition and replication of the larger street-building) into a restaurant and village market complex called Mitchum’s Market-place. Tighe took the name for the complex from the Trappe District farm where she
lives that was once owned by actor Robert Mitchum. She splits her time between a home in Bethesda and the farm, where she and her husband plan to live full time in the future. Her vision for the project is of a high quality, at-tractive downtown site that will serve the community and be an as-set to the town. Tighe and Halliday are working with Town Planner, Frank Hall and the Planning Commission on design plans. La Trappe Creek Remodeling, owned by Trappe native, Danny Ad-ams, is performing the construction work. Space is currently avail-able for lease in the complex. For more information, please contact Brenda Tighe at 301.461.7858 or [email protected].

Trappe Youth & Their Leaders
Attend Youth Rally 2005
At the 18th annual Youth Rally held in Ocean City in January, youth and youth leaders of Scotts United Methodist Church tackled the theme “Who Do You Serve?” This theme is derived from Galatians 1:10. Participants heard music and messages from Tammy Trent, Alvin Slaughter, Virtue, Chris Hill, and others. David Burke, Youth Directory of the Peninsula Dela-ware Conference, challenged youth leaders and pastors of
churches to ask themselves, “Is our church relevant in the lives of youth? Are we connecting with youth in our community?” Youth Leaders were encouraged to incorporate the elements and experience of the youth rally in their local church ministry as they strive to take youth into the deep waters of discipleship beyond the “big event.”
From Pastor Cindy Burkert: Youth Rally 2005 was a series of firsts for many of the young people in Trappe-Faith Chapel UMC’s first-year youth group. Seven boys, one girl, and four adults traveled to Ocean City, and returned late Saturday night full of enthusiasm and excite-ment. Special thanks are due to Anne and Dan Gustafson, Sarah Sewell, and John Farwell who accompanied the youth. The rally offered music and “break out” sessions. We truly heard the word of God through the many performers. Here is one young man’s reflection on his experiences in Ocean City.
My Trip By Tony Lewis On Friday I went to bed thinking about how the trip would be. The next morning I got up and got ready for the trip I had been hoping
for the whole week. My mom drove me to the church where we all where meeting. Then we divided and drove off to the youth rally in Ocean City. I was happy because I got to ride with my old baseball coach and I was going to Ocean City, someplace I had never been before. When we got there we checked in the hotel, which was so cool because there was an ice rink in the middle of the hotel. After we settled in, we went to the youth rally to see a concert. I think that was the best part because the concert was so cool and I had never been to one before. After the concert we went to the hotel to go to bed. While everyone else went to bed I stayed up looking at the ceiling thinking about all the cool stuff that happened that day, until I finally fell asleep. The next day we went to the rally again and saw another concert after that we went on the boardwalk. We stopped at a rest area and said a prayer and talked about God for a few minutes. After eating pizza we went back to the hotel to go swimming and skating. We got to see an ice-skating show that was pretty cool because the kids where younger than us. After all the fun, we packed up and came back home early. That night I could not sleep because I was thinking about all the things we had done.

Lt. Col. Greg Kleponis (shown here on right with village children on Election Day), resident of Main Street, will re-turn home later this month from a tour of duty in Baghdad. Kleponis trained The New Police and the Public Order Battalion (POB). He reports that these forces are now op-erating in the City of Samarra and have stood their ground so far. The POB has been effective in dealing with the AIF (Anti-Iraqi Forces). It is hoped that they will be able to con-tribute to an atmosphere conducive to standing up new IP (Iraqi Police) assets in the city. Kleponis further reports that Iraquis he helped train have been instrumental in seiz-ing a huge weapons and explosives cache.

Water Rates, A Continuing Story . . . By Robert Croswell At some point in time around the late 1940's, the town abandoned all of the original water meters and began charging for water by the number of outlets (spigots, toilets, bath tubs, etc.). There was always an issue about whether kitchens sinks having hot and cold water counted as two outlets or one. Old sinks had separate spigots for hot and cold, but the ones being installed in the '50s mostly had a single spout for the hot/cold mix. There was also the obvious issue of people adding "do it your self" additional outlets without reporting them. I think it was probably sometime in the '60s that the town went to a flat rate charge where everyone paid the same regardless of the number of spigots or amount of
water used. The rates were changed several times, including when sewer service became available around 1961 or so. Water meters were again installed about 5 years ago, and are in use today. A number of the old original meters were found still installed and working. It’s interesting to see that the question of how to charge for water has been, and probably will continue to be, a significant issue in our town.
