Recipients and their employee parents, are: Tavaris Barnes, son of Ionia Barnes; Sarah Clemmons, daughter of Dr. Sarah Clemmons; Meghan Holley, daughter of Janice Holley; Shannon Mercer, son of Sheila Mercer; Deck Milton, son of Vikki Milton; Meagan Oliver, daughter of Gwendolyn Oliver; Kevin Smith, son of Bonnie Smith; Brittni Spires, daughter of Willie Spires; Laura Tay- lor, daughter of Barbara Taylor; Mason Timmons, son of Dianne Timmons; Andy Ward, son of Evelyn Ward and Donald Williams, son of Margie Williams. The Chipola FACC Scholarship Endowment has grown to $130,000. FACC members raise funds for the endowment through the sale of concessions at Chipola athletic events, and with an annual silent auction for employees. FACC is a statewide organization open to all employees, retir- ees and trustees of Florida’s 28 public community colleges. FACC provides professional development opportunities for its members, and represents the interests of community colleges before the Florida Legislature. Coach Ellis returns to Chipola

The Chipola College chapter of the Florida Association ofCommunity Colleges recently awarded $8,800 in scholarships tochildren of college employees.

CNA course set to beginChipola will offer a Certified Nursing

Assistant (CNA) course beginning Oct. 31.Applications are due in the Chipola

Health Science Programs office by Oct. 26.Classes will be held Monday through

Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The finalweek of the course will include clinical ex-periences for eight hours each day.

The cost is approximately $500.For information, call 850-718-2278.

Chipola College is offering a new program of junior and seniorlevel courses leading to a bachelor’s degree in middle school math-ematics education or science education.

Courses will be offered at night and at other convenient timesfor working students. Those who have completed an Associate inArts (AA) degree or 60 hours of college work may be eligible toenroll immediately.

Chipola recently was awarded a SUCCEED Florida grant whichwill provide funds to offer alternative class times, non-traditionaldelivery systems, tutoring and free tuition.

Students currently employed as instructional aides may be ableto satisfy certain internship requirements in their home schools.

Lauren Eade, a 2005 graduate ofChipola College, recently won the LeaderConnection Award presented by the FloridaAssociation of Community College’s Stu-dent Development Commission.

Eade graduated from Chipola in Maywith a perfect 4.0 GPA. She is enrolled atthe University of Florida in the College ofDesign, Construction and Planning, major-ing in Interior Design.

Lindsay Roach, the Chipola Counse-lor who nominated Lauren for the award,said, “Look at her achievements! She is oneof the most well-rounded students we’veever had. Her academic and extracurricularactivities are extraordinary, but even theyare overshadowed by her community ser-vice.”

As a freshman, Eade won the ChipolaBiology Award, the Coca-Cola Scholarship,and was named a Phi Theta Kappa Leadersof Promise Scholar. As a sophomore shewas selected to the All-Florida AcademicFirst Team. She was chosen as the NewCentury Scholar, the highest scoring stu-dent from Florida. In April, she was namedto the First Team All-USA Today AcademicTeam—one of only 20 students nationwide.

Chipola alum wins FACC Leader Connection AwardIt is believed that Eade may be the first

community college student to receive allfive major Phi Theta Kappa Awards: Lead-ers of Promise, Guistewhite, All-USA TodayAcademic Team, All-Florida AcademicTeam, and New Century Scholar.

In addition to her academic achieve-ments, she was a service officer for PTK,Sophomore Senator in SGA and she servedas a Chipola Student Ambassador.

Her community activities were numer-ous. She was founder and coordinator ofthe First Books program which provided afree book to every first grade student inthree area counties. She worked with theAmerican Red Cross Hurricane Relief, dis-tributing meals, diapers and baby formulato victims of Hurricane Ivan in Pensacola.

She was Voter Registration Coordina-tor for Chipola’s 2004 Rock the Vote Cam-paign which resulted in hundreds of newregistrations and culminated with a concertfeaturing live bands and political leaders.

Roach said, “Lauren’s typical reaction toany compliment on her achievement is humblyto tell one how much she learned from her in-volvement and how blessed she is to have hadthe opportunities to serve others.”

Chipola College will offer a variety ofshort courses in the coming weeks.

An Introduction to Computers withInternet for Seniors class will meet Oct. 20from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Cost is $24.

A Cake Decorating II class will meetThursdays, Nov. 3 through Dec. 1, from 6to 8:30 p.m. Cost is $41

A 20 Hour Childcare Training coursewill meet Nov. 12 and 19 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.Cost is $76. A 10-Hour Childcare Training(developmentally appropriate practices, 3-5 year olds) course will meet Dec. 3 from 7a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost is $38. A 10-HourChildcare Training (special needs) coursewill meet Dec. 10 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Costis $38. An Early Care & Education Admin-istrative Overview course will meet Tues-days, Jan. 10 through April 25, 2006, from 6to 9 p.m. Cost is $171. A 10 Hour ChildcareTraining (behavioral observation & screen-ing) course will meet Feb. 4 from 7 a.m. to 5p.m. Cost is $38.

A Real Estate Sales course will meetSaturdays, Feb. 4 through March 18, 2006from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost is $240.

The Chipola College Health ScienceDivision offers training programs for a num-ber of health-related careers.

Kathy Wheeler, ARNP, MSN, is Direc-tor of Chipola’s Health Science programs.She says, “Chipola offers tremendous op-portunities for people interested in thehealth field. Our training programs last froma few weeks to two years, and provide ex-cellent employment opportunities.”

The Associate Degree Nursing (ADN)program is a 1+1 LPN to RN curriculum.After completing the first year ofcoursework, students are eligible to takethe LPN state licensure exam. Students areeligible to take the RN exam after complet-ing the second year of the program. Majorpre-requisites for acceptance include: psy-chology, intermediate or college algebra,English 1101, Biology and orientation. Atotal of 80 students are admitted per year:40 each in fall and spring. Application dead-line for the next class is Oct. 15. Chipolarecently added an preceptorship programinto the final semester of the ADN curricu-lum during which students work with a li-censed RN.

The LPN to RN transition program ac-cepts current LPN’s into the third semesterof the ADN program during the Summerterms. Application deadline for the nextclass is April 15, 2006. Program enrollmentis limited.

The EMT Emergency Medical Techni-cian program accepts 24 students in each

of the Fall and Spring classes. The eveningprogram prepares students for employmentas EMT’s to treat various medical/traumaconditions. The 11 credit-hour course is 250clock-hours in length. Prerequisites include:high school diploma or GED; CPR Level C;FDLE background check; and acceptablescore on the college placement test readingsub-test. The next class begins in Februaryof 2006.

The Paramedic program runs for threesemesters. A total of 24 students are ac-cepted in each class. Only licensed Emer-gency Medical Technicians are eligible toenroll. Classes usually meet in late after-noon to early evening. Application dead-line for the Fall 2006 class is July of 2006.

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)program offers four classes per year. Thenext class begins Oct. 31. Application dead-line is Oct. 26. Classes will be held Mondaythrough Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.Students must take the Test of Adult BasicEducation (TABE), available in the ChipolaSuccess Center.

The Chipola Health Science Divisionemploys 8 full-time faculty members and 7part-time instructors. Students learn in astate-of-the-art $3 million training facilitywhich was constructed with funds from theFlorida Department of Education and a grantform the US Department of Agriculture.
