COMBINNED SEWER OVERFLOW OUTFALL

Rain washes pollutants from streets, construction sites, and land into storm sewersthat ultimately end up in the the NYC Blue Network during heavy rain. During a Com-bined Sewer Overfl ow event, the storm sewers and ditches empty stormwater carry-ing pollutants directly into streams and rivers with no treatment. Polluted stormwater degrades our lakes, rivers, wetlands and other waterways. Petrochemicals, phospho-rus, feces (from pet waste) and nitrogen can cause toxic overload in our waterways and can kill fi sh and other aquatic life. Areas with combined sewer overfl ows are identifi ed.

The green infrastructure serves to invite public to access the waterfront while creating habitat that attracts wildlife and cleans the water of stormwater and industrial contaminants

E TThe project collaborates with companies manufacturing flfl oating islands with native vegetation. Floating islands aare natural and sustainable treatment wetlands that re-mmove excess nutrients and contaminants from the NYC BBlue Network. Microbes and plants fi lter nutrients and oother pollutants from water. With a large surface area ffor processing contaminants, the fl oating islands keep tthe aquatic system in balance.

VVegetated islands attract terrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr-rrestrial insects that provide food aand protective covering for fi sh.

MMYCOFILTRATION: Mycofi ltration is a form of fi ltration using mushhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh-rroom mycelium to clean polluted water to a less contaminated state. AAccording to research by Paul Stamets, underground mycelium net-wworks produce enzyme acids that break down hydrogen and carbon cchains. Interwoven microfi ltration mats that are incorporated in the iisland matrix can effectively eliminate diesel based toxins carried by sstormwater from surrounding impermeable surfaces.

The islands maintain a visual-ly intriguing composition with a lush vegetated fl ow, creat-ing a tapestry of color and texture while also contribut-ing towards a transformative, multi-sensory experience that invites community to access thhhhhe wwwwwwwateeeer..
