LEARNING ACTIVITIES AND ASSESSMENTS

The following assignments totaling 100 points are to be completed as described below by the dates

indicated.

Required Assignments

o Reading Assignments (30 pts total: summaries are 25 pts and book review is 5 pts). Students

will read all of the assigned books and articles and submit a summary/analysis for each of

approximately 250-300 words. The students will email these to the instructor as they complete

them throughout the semester following the weekly directives of the instructor. Students will

discuss these readings with the instructor and peers during their weekly meetings. The instructor

can assign additional articles and other readings during the semester. The student will choose

one of the assigned readings and prepare a 1500-2000 word critical book review to be emailed to

the instructor by March 30, 11pm PST.

o Case Study (10 pts).

The student will develop a case study of a situation involving a ministry challenge/conflict that

has occurred during his contextualized ministry experience (on-field ministry time). The student

will use the following guidelines in preparing the case study.

A case study is an account of a particular ministry dilemma. It is open-ended and unbiased in

reporting the situation, and leaves the reader with a problem to solve. The student will raise

questions, but the case should not be resolved. This will allow for group discussion to clarify

critical issues, attain self-awareness, acknowledge diverse points of view and enhance the

individual growth of group members. The student will present this in a small group setting and

turn in his or her notes for the completion of this assignment. A formal essay is not required. This

assignment is due April 10, 11pm PST. The instructor will coordinate a time for the student to

present this assignment after the due date.

In writing a case study, accuracy and objectivity are important. If one expresses opinions, they

should be those of the characters in the case, not from the author. The student should write in the

third-person. All names and other recognizable data should be disguised where appropriate.

The following components need to be included in a case:

1. Introduction: Demonstrate the weight of the situation and state the problem that exists

(i.e., decision to be made, a letter to be written, a meeting to take place).

2. Background: Give essential background information on the situation so that the reader

will understand the larger context.

3. Description: Recreate the situation in enough detail.

4. Summary: Restate the problem to be resolved, then leave it open-ended.

o Research Paper on Christian Leadership (20 pts). The student will write a paper on one of the following topics:

Leadership as Understood in the Gospels

Paul’s Leadership Model

Moses’ Leadership Model

Teachers as Leaders in the New Testament

Prophets as Leaders in the Old Testament

A Leader’s Role in Evangelism – A Biblical and Theological Assessment

As a graduate-level paper, the student must have a central argument or thesis. The thesis

determines which material to include and which not to include, gives structure to the paper, and a

sense of cohesion. A paper without a clear thesis will not receive a satisfactory grade. The student

is required to use a minimum of 12 extra-biblical sources in his or her research. This will include

scholarly journal articles, commentaries, and other substantial theological resources. The student

must include a bibliography and footnote citations. Suggested length is 3000-3500 words. Follow

the Southern Style Manual for this assignment. The student should utilize the research paper

template provided on the Southern Seminary library website. If the student does not understand

these expectations, he or she should consult the instructor. The assignment is due May 6, 11pm

PST.

o Mentorship (15 pts).

The student will be mentored by the instructor, meeting for a minimum of two hours per week.

The purpose of this mentorship is the refining of ministry leadership skills, character

development, accountability, and ministry evaluation. The mentor or instructor will integrate the

reading and other assignments with the weekly meetings.

o Contextualized Ministry Experience (25 pts).

The student is expected to be engaged in a minimum of five hours per week of ministry (total of

50 hours minimum—20 pts) under the supervision of one of the elders at Emaus Church. The

student will be required to keep a weekly journal concerning his or her ministry involvement and

lessons learned (5 pts). The journal and other records will assist the student in his or her other

assignments and the instructor may ask to review them periodically.
