Students and chaperoneswill put their collective workboots on as they spendspring break in a smallKenyan village.

by Troy [email protected]

Poverty in Kenya has unitedteens from a trio of high schoolsacross Maple Ridge.

This spring break, studentsfrom Samuel Robertson Technical(SRT), Thomas Haney, andGaribaldi secondary schools willbe staying at The MaasaiMara National Reserve inSouthwestern Kenya for a14-day “Me to We” trip toKenya in support of Free theChildren.

Kenya is the destinationbecause 56 per cent of thecountry’s population livesbelow the poverty line, andextreme poverty – definedas those living on under $1per day – includes almost 30per cent of Kenya’s currentpopulation.

During the group’s twoweeks in the area, they willbe living in the communityof a local tribe and experien-cing their culture first hand.

The students and theirchaperones will also behelping to build a schoolin the small village, alongwith digging wells, planting trees, and assisting with a clean-waterproject.

“We will meet and learn fromthe local elders and communityleaders, walk with the mamas todraw water, and even take partin daily Swahili lessons,”Garibaldi Secondary Grade12 student Trent Harrisexplained to The TIMES.

“This will be a reward-ing and unique learningexperience for us, as wetake a walk in someoneelse’s shoes and witnessourselves, what we havebeen learning about in schoolsuch as: poverty, drought, andfamine.”

The children in the region speaklimited English, so the Swahililessons will help the Canadianvisitors interact with the localsthrough basic phrases, explainedDanielle Zagar, a Global Studiesteacher at SRT.

Zagar, who is one of the leadersof the trip, said the local contin-gent is prepared to put in longdays, starting at 8 a.m. and in bedby 10 at night, and a fair portionof the time there will be used todo landscaping work and build-

ing a portion of the schoolusing bricks and clay. Thegroup also plans on visit-ing a giraffe sanctuary, going on a sunset hike, and embarking on a safari.

The humanitarian jour-ney will be an expensiveone, especially for the stu-dents who have to rely ontheir parents and/or part-

time employment to cover costs. Each participant has to come

up with $4,700, plus the cost ofmandatory vaccinations, beforedeparting to Kenya.

In the weeks and months lead-ing up to their departure, thestudents were drumming up spon-sorships and donations to raisemoney for their trip.

“Any donation would be greatlyappreciated, in our efforts to goto Kenya and promote the notionthat children are not powerless toaffect change,” Harris said.

People often hear about Africa’spoverty, drought, and famine, but to see it first handwill be an eye-openingexperience. Harris said.

“We want to be thereand help make a positivedifference,” he added.

Zagar said the trip toKenya grew out of SRT’sGlobal Studies program.

“We will learn aboutthe cultural, social, economic, and environ-mental issues facing the people ofrural Kenya,” Zagar said.

The group will camp out insafari tents during the trip, which is scheduled for the startof Kenya’s unpredictable rainyseason.

Grade 12 Katelin Smith, one ofthe three sisters including Kirsten

(Grade 10), and Katrina (Grade9) from Thomas Haney hoping tomake the trip, said Canadian stu-dents take a lot for granted andthat it would be “cool to help.”

Thomas Haney Grade 10 stu-dent Hannah Schenker took a part

time job at McDonald’sto help raise fundsin her quest to go toKenya.

“It’s definitely worthit,” Schenker said. “Itbrings me so much joyto help other people.”

Grade 12 Shayla Singhfrom Thomas Haneysaw the pictures fromlast year’s trip. “It was

like, ‘Oh my God, how come wedidn’t get to go’?” she said.

Anyone interested in findingout more about the trip, aboutSRT’s Global Studies program, orwanting to make a last-minutedonation can email Zagar at [email protected].

A retired couple is behind20 wells and other aid to alandlocked African country.

by Maria [email protected]

The people of Malawi are get-ting more and more fresh drink-ing water, thanks to a MapleRidge charity that draws onvolunteer efforts and generousdonations to help others helpthemselves.

Drilling wells is one focusof Project Wellness, the MapleRidge charity run by GeorgeKlassen and his family – whichincludes his wife Sheilaand daughter NadineSands – that helps thesouthern African coun-try. But the organizationalso feeds hundreds oforphans, helps widows, and this year will bebuilding a maize millthat will serve four vil-lages – projects that helpthe people of Malawihelp themselves.

Klassen and his family estab-lished Project Wellness abouteight years ago, under theumbrella of Amazon EvangelicalSociety, the vehicle that issuestax receipts.

Klassen has been retired fromthe steel industry for severalyears, but in his mid-seventieshe still visits Malawi regularlyto ensure the projects are beingdone properly.

Klassen’s policy with ProjectWellness is simple: look afterorphans and widows.

“The women are still tilling theland with a baby on the back,”Klassen said, “[and] carrying thewater with a baby on the back.”

While Klassen was involvedin evangelical work in SouthAmerica, his focus in Africa hasbeen humanitarian work, “keep-ing the wolf from the door,” hesaid.

Project Wellness is has no paidemployees and reliessolely on volunteers.

That way they are ableto keep their overheadcosts low, and are ableto drill wells for only$5,000 apiece.

It was a chance meet-ing in Nigeria that con-nected Klassen to thepoor southern Africancountry of Malawi. He

was asked to go to Nigeria fortwo weeks as a chaplain, whenhe was approached by anotherclergyman from Malawi, whotold him “you really need tocome and see what’s happeningin Malawi.”

That was in spring 2004, andsince then he’s been back andforth dozens of times.

While the Klassens areChristians and have beeninvolved in evangelical work inother parts of the world, in theirwork with Project Wellness, theydo not ask the children or any-

one they are help-ing what religionthey belong to.

Twenty wellshave been drilled in the Ntcheudistrict of Malawi in 20 differentvillages by Project Wellness.

Africans do not like childrento be institutionalized, Klassen

said, and orphans are usuallybilleted with extended families. But about 400 children comeevery day to a feeding centre, built by Project Wellness, wherethey get food and an education.

In 2012, the plan is to alsobuild a maize mill, whichKlassen hopes will make theorphans self-sufficient within ayear.

Klassen has also brought afundamental shift in how wellwater is used in the areas he’sworked in in Malawi. Waterfrom wells was used for washingand cooking, but not for cropirrigation.

Watering crops was alwaysdependenton rainwater, but Klasseninsisted thatwell water beused also forcrops.

The wellsall have handpumps asmotorizedpumps wouldcost too muchto maintainwith fuel at

about $6 per litre on the blackmarket.

Teachers weremarching alongHarris Road thisweek drawingattention to theirthree-day strike.

A former local superintendentopposes government’s legislation.by Maria [email protected]

Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows publicschool students were scheduled to beback in class this morning after a three-day teachers strike.

Teachers were seen around both com-munities at busy corners during theirwalkout in groups, or walking up anddown streets carrying signs as they werenot allowed to picket schools.

The Labour Relations Board ruledteachers were allowed to withdrawcompletely from their duties for threeconsecutive days. After that, however, teachers may withdraw services one daya week after their initial strike.

The B.C. Teachers’ Federation andthe B.C. Public School Employers’

Association, which is the bargainingagent for the provincial government, havebeen at loggerheads over contract nego-tiations for about a year.

The province is offering net-zero – nosalary increases without other conces-sions – while the teachers are asking fora 15 per cent wage increase over severalyears.

The provincial government has intro-duced Bill 22, which will end all jobaction, including the limited job actionthat started in September and impose acooling-off period for six months.

Former superintendent Mike Suddabyhas come out in support of teachers intheir dispute with the provincial govern-ment.

“In all my years, I have never seen agovernment so bent on trying to destroythe best of the teaching profession,”Suddaby said. “Bill 22 takes away classsize and class composition limits. How isthat good for either students or teachers?”

Prefer Canada helps Africanshelp themselves.

by Maria [email protected]

Cathy Emmerson wants to give a“hand up” not a “handout” to thepeople of Rwanda.

That’s what she’s been doingfor about nine years, living amongthe Rwandan people, helping thembecome self-sufficient and drawingon her previous hometown of MapleRidge and Pitt Meadows to helpfinance many of her projects.

Emmerson said she chose Rwandaas the object of her work because ofthe president and his government.

“President Kagame has zero tol-erance for corruption. What thismeans is that help that is given isreceived by the people who need it,”Emmerson said. “So many Africancountries are destroyed by corrup-tion, millions of dollars are sent tofeed a starving nation only to be‘eaten’ by the various levels of gov-ernment while the population con-tinues to starve.”

Emmerson called the Rwandangovernment a “leading example” forthe rest of the continent.

But another big motivator is theRwandan children who are “ador-able,” Emmerson said.

“They’re the real reason I’m here,”she said.

The past nine years in Rwandahave taught Emmerson “that oneperson can make a difference andthe strength of a team can changelives forever.”

The organization that fundraisesfor her is Prefer Canada – Preferstands for “poverty reduc-tion, education, familyempowerment.”

Emmerson’s mandate is tohelp people help themselvesand not just give out charity.

“We travel with people ontheir journey out of poverty, and let me tell you it is anexciting and heartwarmingride,” she said.

The genocide in 1994 wasdevastating for Rwanda, and thecountry lost many skilled trades-people.

Prefer has a volunteer programwhereby people can go to Rwanda tohelp for two weeks to three months.

It’s a good way for people to helpthe organization.

“Plumbers, teachers, electri-cians, builders, computer skills– Rwanda needs them all,”Emmerson said.

Through her organization, workis being done to finish construc-tion on a school building.

Prefer also sponsored 16 olderstudents to attend schools in the

northern part of Rwanda.Emmerson also started a

goat program whereby a fam-ily receives a goat, whichproduces milk and moregoats. The offspring can beeither reared, sold, or slaugh-tered for food, but the familyhas to keep the original goat.

The charitable organiza-tion has also offered trainingfor women to learn to sew

– allowing them to become self-suf-ficient.

“I live with a nation of peoplewho are changing their lives for thebetter, learning new skills whilestill healing from past wounds,”

Emmerson said. “Their strengthis amazing. The hand up we giveallows the family to take anotherstep towards a life of dignity. That’sthe reason people get involved… thefeeling you get when you see thesuccessful results of your help.”

Emmerson is planning a trip toCanada this summer, and she hopesto take part in a fundraiser in Juneat the Pitt Meadows Heritage Hall.

Prefer Canada received its charitystatus in December, allowing themto give out tax receipts for donationsof $25 or more.

More information about CathyEmmerson’s organization is availableat www.prefercanada.org.

A Maple Ridgeelementary recentlydonated funds forneedy people in Kenya.

by Troy [email protected]

Led by a group of Grade6s and 7s, students andstaff at Kanaka CreekElementary are doing theirpart to improve the livesof underprivileged peopleliving halfway around theworld.

Anna Crandall, a youthprogramming coordin-ator with Free theChildren, recently vis-ited the Maple Ridgeschool, where sheaccepted a cheque for$6,300.

Through theschool’s “Me-to-We”program and Free theChildren, the dona-tion will help thoseliving in the Kenyan villageof Mwangaza.

The funds will help pro-vide alternative incomes, clean water, medical ser-vices, and education forthe people living in the vil-lage, which Kanaka CreekElementary has adopted.

Free the Children’sprimary goals are to freechildren “from poverty andexploitation and free youngpeople from the notionthat they are powerless toeffect positive change inthe world.”

Making positive changewhile raising awareness iswhat the Kanaka Creek’s“Me-to-We” group is allabout.

Their fundraising effortshave included the salesof calendars and a charityHalloween dance. Ticketsto an upcoming VancouverCanucks’ home game willalso be raffled off, withevery cent of the proceedsfrom past and upcomingfundraisers going to thecause.

“We’re trying to get theschool involved, to help

kids, and donate money,”Grade 7 Mackenzie Lycansaid.

Kanaka Creek studentsare also making a differ-ence in their own back-yard.

Each Friday, the school’sGrade 5 to 7 studentsprepare lunches that areserved at the SalvationArmy’s Caring PlaceMinistries.

Also on a weekly basis,they clean ken-nels at Katie’sPlace, a volun-teer-run, no-killanimal shelterin Maple Ridge.

Julia Coustol,a support teach-er at KanakaCreek, said stu-dent leadership is the focusof the “Me-to-We” group.

The local schoolchildrenlearn about child labour, and the situation in Kenyain which many childrengo without basic needssuch as clean water, medical services, andeducation, and how thosefactors affect these youngKenyans’ lives.

Grade 7 student OliviaBowes has a new senseof appreciation of whatshe has, and awarenessof what children living inThird World countries suchas Kenya don’t have.

“I used to take thingsfor granted, like when Iwas brushing my teeth, I’dleave the tap on,” she said.“But now I turn it off sothere is more water.”

Grade 6 studentSavannahHammer feelsfortunate tohave her basicneeds met.

“I get to go toschool and getan education,I have every-thing,” she said.

“Where they live, theydon’t get to go to school, they work all day, so littlethings we take for granted, they don’t get.”

The goal is to raise$10,000 by the end of theschool year. Last year,Kanaka Creek Elementaryraised $2,500 the entireyear.

Grade 7 student Faith

Black said she is “really, really proud,” of what theschool has achieved so far.

“We have done so muchfundraising,” she said.“And it’s not just the stu-dents. The teachers havehelped a lot, too. It’s reallynice being from Kanakabecause we take leadershipand ownership.”• More online at www.mrtimes.com

Opinion

Teachers’ strike? I wouldn’ttouch it with a three-metre pole ora yardstick or one of those point-ers you might find dusting yourknuckles back in the day whencorporal punishment was thenorm and you could hear somekid getting the strap, his criesechoing through the halls.

Now that was a deterrent. Notto mention the Grade 5 teacherwho put the unruly under herdesk while she sat there. It waslike spelunking. I haven’t beenable to enter a cave since.

Aside from a few gigs as a substitute teacherin university when I needed beer money, myclassroom experience is negligible; so to criticizeteachers, beyond the humourous references toPro-D days and summer vacations in which weall indulge, would be blowing so much smoke onmy part.

My own experience as a student was almostcompletely devoid of trauma: I was made to sitin the hall during physics class, my ostracism ondisplay for all who walked by; and I was witnessto an explosion in woodworking class that senttwo teachers and a student to hospital: to this dayI can’t look at the fruit bowl I made on the woodlathe without seeing the skin peeling off of Mr.Black’s face – the same Mr. Black who predicted Iwould come to no good if I didn’t behave myselfduring his riveting lectures on screwdrivers.

No one teacher stands out as having been aninspiration, as is often the case. I was a jock, so Iwas drawn to the phys ed teachers – and that iswhat I studied at university – if one can be saidto study phys ed, now more popularly known askinesiology, the science of movement. I ended updelivering mail for 35 years.

Maybe Bill Black was right!?My own children fared very well in school,

thank you, especially the Angel Andrew, one ofthe oft-referred-to special needs cohort. Thanks tosome effective lobbying by The Wife, he receivedexcellent support throughout his tenure in ele-

mentary and secondary schoolsand graduated summa cum laugh-ter and was roundly applauded atgraduation.

My daughter, an alumna ofWhonnock and Garibaldi schools,is soon to receive a bachelor ofscience in biology.

Both kids having taken kin-dergarten with the ageless MoMorgan producer and director ofnumerous circuses, pageants, andplays, all recorded on videotapeand used to embarrass the kids atweddings and birthdays.

I like to think that the professions should bepaid according to their worth, their importanceto the maintenance of a free and enlightened andhealthy society: police, firefighters, paramedics, doctors, nurses, teachers, the indispensible.

And unless their demands are really throughthe roof, give the teachers what they want (again, within reason: these guys only work 10 months ayear!) and let’s get on with building our lives.

The argument is, as always, about money andcan this government really cry poverty when, ashas been noted in this space before, they havespent millions on the Canucks’ Stanley Cup run,the Grey Cup party, the bloated salaries of peoplelike former BC Ferries boss, David Hahn, legalfees for political aides caught with pants down.

Where is all that trickle down cash from theOlympics? We need concessions from both sidesin what is essentially a schoolyard fight.

But George and Christy plow ahead with legis-lation and mediation while parents make arrange-ments for child care and hordes of studentsdescend upon the leisure centre – my sanctumsanctorum – to take up gym equipment and poolspace. (Better they should be in the malls, right?)

This will all come to end, of course, with aresolution that satisfies neither party and we willhave peace for a few years until the contractexpires and a new premier faces off against theteachers’ union.

Déjà vu all over again, what?

Our View

Giving hope…compassion

Many Canadians will scoff when theyare told that their problems are minor, compared to the everyday difficultiesfaced by men and women – and espe-cially children – in much of the rest ofthe world.

What about our homeless? Whatabout the escalating costs – and length-ening wait lists – in our health caresystem? What about the inequities in our

justice system? What aboutour outrageous tax

increases? What aboutour shrinking middleclass and the growingdisparities betweenrich and poor?

Wait. Stop rightthere.

You want to talkabout disparitiesbetween rich andpoor? Most folks inCanada don’t have

any idea what “poor”is. On a planetary scale, the averageCanadian wage-earner is among theworld’s richest “one per cent.”

The majority of this planet’s sevenbillion human inhabitants don’t haveaccess to medical care, let alone ourenvied universal health care.

Justice for billions of people would besurviving until tomorrow, with a bit offood in their bellies and maybe one glassof relatively clean drinking water.

Justice for their future lies in educa-tion and an economic leg up.

We salute those among us who haverecognized the global need and havetaken action to provide help.

Canadians have a great deal morewealth than most of us realize – not justeconomic wealth, but wealth in educa-tion, wealth in understanding, and mostimportantly of all, wealth in compassion.

And the wonder of it all is that themore we share our wealth with others, the greater our own personal wealthbecomes.

Dear Editor,It seems the Gordon Campbell agenda

of privatizing all profits and socializingcosts is not a thing of the past. It wouldseem “privatize at any cost” is still aliveand well in B.C.

The Clark government obviously hasn’tlearned any lessons on how to properlygovern a democratic province and is onceagain about to make major changes toB.C. without a proper mandate from thevoters.

The tens of millions of liquor boardprofits that usually go to social programs, etc. will instead go into the sweet-smell-ing pockets of a chosen few fat cats.

You might ask who is going to makeup all that money when liquor profits areprivatized – let us not forget that privatebusinesses pay minimal taxes in B.C.

The harsh reality is that yet more work-ers will lose half their income and dropunceremoniously out of the middle class, and the taxes from their reduced incomeswill drop drastically also.

This money shall be made up one ofthree ways.

First it will be taken from other cashcows, such as ICBC or BC Hydro, andguess who is going to pay more for these

services as a result.Don’t forget the BC Liberals already

siphoned off a billion dollars from ICBClast year to pay for their financial inepti-tude, not counting all the extra taxes theygot from the HST.

The second way will be to simply raiseyour income taxes.

The third way these shortfalls will bedealt with is by cutting social or otherprograms the current profits go to sup-port.

If you think that liquor will be cheaperwhen it is privatized, better think again.

Private liquor stores already pay 16 percent less for their liquor than govern-ment liquor stores do, and they pay theiremployees about a half what governmentliquor store employees earn.

That is why that tip jar is on the count-er, because like all minimum wage jobs, the customer is expected to supplementtheir income.

And I have yet to see anything cheaperin a private liquor store.

This, like the HST, is an election issue, and if the government insists on doingit, an election should be called to get aproper mandate from the people of B.C.

Dear Editor,Is it an odd coincidence

that the smart meters arebeing installed with suchfervor, that Bill C-30 isabout to take away ourprivacy, that adjudicationis about to become ournew legal system leavingevery person in Canadadefenceless against anyaccusation, that newbylaws are being intro-duced, and that StephenHarper wants to buildmore jails and possiblytake

on the American legal ruleof minimum mandatorysentences?

People, stop these smartmeters now! Stand up andshout and get loud aboutthis one. We are about tolose our freedoms, anddemocracy is crumbling ina skillful manner.

Get more involved, getyour family involved, getyour friends involved, getanyone you can get firedup and involved before itbecomes too late to keep

our freedom, just by talk-ing and writing. The penis mightier than the sword,so start swinging that penand take no hostages!

We can make a change, and the HST battle provedit! But you have to getmore involved. Writingon Facebook is great, butnot enough. Write to themayor, your council mem-bers, the CAOs of cities,Christy Clark, anyone youthink may need to hear themany, many voices: thepapers, other municipal-ities, blog sites, T-shirts,bumper stickers, flyers, use your imagination.

You are the key to ourfreedom! Accept respon-sibility to ensure Canadashows the world howhappy we all are just beingourselves, working hardand playing hard, achiev-ing and living our dreamsin peace and harmonywithout a governmentbreathing down our necks.

Their job is to keep ourstreets clean and paved, get water to our homes, and the list goes on.

But we do not needthem getting power hungryand thinking that this istheir money.

It’s our money, andthey need to be remindedpermanently.

It’s up to you. I wrotethis letter; it only took meabout 15 minutes, but Ihope it got you fired up.

Criminal justice

Laws are made powerlessDear Editor,

In the dim and distant past, our criminal justice systemworked pretty darned well. One could say that it wasmostly quite effective, too.

Then a panel of lawyers thought the Criminal Codeneeded reworking. Perhaps it would help to make morework for lawyers, both of the criminal and civil. That wasperhaps not the intended aim. Or was it?

The legislation that created this unholy mess isobscene. It is so unbalanced, it has made the hands ofthe prosecutors almost powerless to do their job, whilethe defence attorney can and often does cut a very wideswath indeed.

This can only mean that few convictions are accom-plished. The rare ones who are convicted receive punish-ment that is often absurd. I find it infuriating.

A young woman was [allegedly] assaulted, and theprosecutors said the likelihood of obtaining a convictionwas most unlikely – yet another example of how unbal-anced our justice system has become. Naturally, theyoung woman is devastated, and once again, the criminaljustice system failed in its job of taking care of the public.

The folks in Ottawa will do nothing, because theyhave no fire in the belly, and absolutely no sense ofdecency. Those people do not listen to the electorate any-way, while things grind on and our society continues tounravel.

One facet of this, no doubt, is voter apathy; it couldhardly be otherwise. A great deal of criminal activityoccurs because they can, and they have no fear of beingheld accountable.

A group has recentlyformed to reach out toAfrican women raisingtheir grandchildren.

by Maria [email protected]

The organization start-ed with grandmothershelping grandmothers, but the group also wel-comes “grandothers.”

The Golden Ears Go Gos, a groupof largely women who function underthe umbrella of the Stephen LewisFoundation, has been meeting regularlyto talk about how they can help grand-mothers in Africa who are raising theirgrandchildren because their own childrenhave died of AIDS.

Two hundred forty Go Gogroups exist across Canada, andin the Lower Mainland, they’reknown as the Greater Van Gogos.

The Golden Ears Go Gos, as anorganization, is starting slowly– as recommended by the foun-dation, and the meetings includea “diverse collection of MapleRidge and Pitt Meadows people,”according to co-chair Linda King.

“Many are grandparents who see thematerial advantages enjoyed by their owngrandchildren, and wish to assist thosein Africa who have so much less,” Kingsaid.

The group meets at the Maple RidgeLibrary and its members are currentlyplanning, strategizing and getting toknow each other.

“Laughter happens,” King said of theirmeetings.

The Grandmothers to Grandmotherscampaign was launched by the StephenLewis Foundation in 2006.

The groups raise money to help Africangrandmothers become self-support-ing, and responds to community needs, including providing food, health care,

school fees, and school uniforms.King said she’s involved with the

Go Gos because she believes in thecause.

““The grandmothers of Africa aredoing what grandparents do whenheartbreak happens,” she said.

“We can help a bit to ease thepath.”

Upcoming fundraiser for theGolden Ears Go Gos include a gar-

age and plant sale on May 5 at King’scomplex, at 22268 116th Ave. starting at10 a.m.

Anyone interested in getting involvedwith the Golden Ears Go Gos can callLinda King at 604-467-2688, or emailher at [email protected]. Thegroup meets monthly at the Maple RidgeLibrary.

Many ingredientsgo into makinga successfulbusiness!

Louise Manseau is an entrepreneur and anaward-winning business woman, but she’s quickto shy away from any personal accolades in favourof recognition for her six-person staff at Star FiveClassic Country Catering.

“I love what I do… and I love working with my team and being out in thiscommunity,” Manseau said.

In her capacity as the owner and catering manager for the Maple Ridge business, she has enjoyed more than a dozen years of feeding people – primarily in the MapleRidge and Pitt Meadows communities.

So, what’s been the key to success for this local business woman?“You do the best you can with what you do, give the best quality and service, and

it will come back to you,” she insists. While Manseau has only been at the helm of Star Five for 12 years, she has been

in the food service business for more than 35 years, and she brings all those years ofexperience to her deli, lunch counter, and catering business operated out of facilitiesnext to the Petro-Can station in Yennadon – at 232nd Street and 128th Avenue.

And her expertise shows. She must be doing something right, having just won her third consecutive TIMES

Readers’ Choice award for Star Five, not to mention the (oven) mitt full of self-employment honours to her credit.

So, whether you’re looking to grab lunch, wanting a healthy and deliciouspre-made dinner to take home for the family, or planning a large function such aswedding, birthday, conference, or other special event that needs catering– makesure to sample what Manseau and her team at Star Five have to offer.

Former writers Rebecca Stiles and Erin Culhane put down their pens and picked up theirpins, rolling pins that is, and opened Zena’s Gluten Free on Oct. 15, of last year. The two women started the bakery to specialize in fresh, gluten-free fare, and creatingdelicious goods for those with allergies and sensitivities.“We are a gluten-free bakery, that’s our main priority, but we also made the choice tobe nut free, because there are a lot of people who can’t just walk into a bakery and buysomething,” said Stiles. “Our bakery is a safe environment for people with allergies,”she added.Zena’s came to be as a result of family health issues that required a gluten-free diet andspecialty baking.“My daughter Sofi was not gaining weight and was diagnosed with failure to thrive. She was 18 pounds at age two,” explained Stiles. “We put her on a gluten-free dietand within two weeks she was gaining weight, after a very scary year of not gaininganything,” added Stiles.Erin’s motivation was cultivated by a specialty diet required by her best friend. The goal is to show the world how delicious gluten-free can be. Zena’s can makeeveryone delicious baked goods, including quality breads, muffins, cookies and cakes, with the finest ingredients and nutrition always in mind.“There seems to be a need for gluten free, and we have the nicest demographic - peoplewho value what we are doing. Thank you Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, and neighbouringcommunities, for a wonderful start,” Stiles said.International Women’s Day has real significance for the owners of Zena’s. Both Stiles andCulhane have been advocates for women’s rights and support programs that empowerand educate women.

Parish appeals for aidA small Pitt Meadows congregation is focusedon helping people in Congo and Cameroon.

by Maria [email protected]

A small parish of only 16 people that meets in PittMeadows is trying to make a difference in one of themost troubled areas in the world.

The Parish of St. Bride’s, a “traditional” Anglicanparish led by Father David Marriott, has been help-ing the African countries of Democratic Republic ofCongo and Cameroon for two years.

Marriott visited Congo in 2007even after the Canadian embassy inBurundi warned him not to go.

“Congo is the most remarkableexample of the failed state I’ve everbeen to,” he said.

The life expectancy in Congo isabout 38 to 40 years, and the villageshave no seniors, Marriott said.

Because of years of fighting, manymen have been killed and widows are left to bring uptheir young children. Marriott said St. Bride’s wantsto empower the Congolese to be self-sufficient.

The small parish, along with its sister parish inHalf Moon Bay, was able to give a loan of $2,000 toa group of widows from St. Francois D’Assise parishin Mosho, an area called Sud Kivu in the Congo. Thewidows used the money to start a co-operative, grow-ing vegetables and selling any surplus.

The result is threefold: better nutrition, a sense ofpurpose for the mothers, and giving hope to the com-munity that better times are coming.

But the need is great and Marriott is appealing formore help to pay for school teachers’ salaries and topay for the school’s rent in Cameroon.

For more information on St. Bride’s Africa Appeal,go to www.parishofstbride.webs.com.

Dave Rempel hopes to send acontainer of supplies to Russia.

by Maria [email protected]

Whonnock resident and schoolboard trustee Dave Rempel hasalways held the plight of Russiaclose to his heart.

His connections to the large coun-try – suffering from years of com-munist dictatorships and radicalchanges over the past two decades– are making a difference for juven-ile delinquents.

Rempel’s focus has been on aboys’ reform school, the T.K. TikhiySpecial Education School, in easternRussia. It houses and educates teenswho have a criminal record.

The boys farm on 65 acres of land, attend school with a strong academ-ic bent, and learn trades.

All the boys are between the agesof 13 and 18 and “they’ve all hadencounters with the law,” includingbreak-and-enters, fraud, andassault, Rempel said.

The success rate of the boys’school is 85 per cent, andRempel attributes this to itsstrong academic program andthe farm work, but also to thehands-on training the boysreceive.

“It gives back to the com-munity – many of the vegetablesthey grow go back to the orphanageor the community,” Rempel said.

The teens at the reform school also

make machine parts in the shop, forexample, they were able to make$24,000 in metal production, and$22,000 in potatoes.

“The school will sell everything itcan make,” Rempel said.

But Rempel would like to procuremore equipment for school, as gent-ly used tools – like lathes and otherwoodworking equipment – are hard

to come by in Russia.Rempel, a member of the

Meadowridge Rotary Club, has applied for a grantto send over tools, sportsequipment, and othersupplies to help the boysbecome productive mem-bers of society.

This is the third projectRotary has worked on for the school.

The first time, funds were raisedto buy a dump truck, somethingthat has been useful in the farming

aspect of the Russianschool.

The second time, funds were donatedto buy computersto allow the boysto train for futureemployment.

The cost of leas-ing a containeris about $4,000, and this will bepaid for partly by the Haney andMeadowridge Rotary clubs, with adistrict Rotary matching grant.

Rempel is hoping to get dona-tions from residents, businesses, and institutions in Maple Ridge andPitt Meadows of machines, sportsequipment, and other useful itemsthat will help in the education of theyouth at the school.

For more information on the pro-ject, or to make a donation, contactDave Rempel at [email protected].

Pitt Meadows city stafferLaurie Darcus heads to Africa.

by Sylver [email protected]

At the end of April, the direc-tor of corporate services in PittMeadows will hang up her citystaffer hat and don a fedora moreappropriate for hotter climates.

Laurie Darcus will take herthird trip to Africa, this timeto Northern Ethiopia for sixweeks.

Darcus is joining a SimonFraser University project, ledby Dr. Catherine D’Andrea, called Early-stage develop-ment in Northern Ethiopia,Eastern Tigray.

“It’s an archeology project, with some humanitariangoals,” said Darcus, 51.

Darcus and her group intend toexamine and document the age-old process of grinding technologyand ensure that as new technol-ogy is introduced that the com-munal process that maintains theintegrity of the group is not lost.

Women who had spent hours uponhours grinding seeds, with the introductionof a grinding machine would find them-selves with plenty of free time.

“The way it could be lost is by womenbecoming independent producers and cre-ating a class-based social system, wheresome people or families will become mar-ginalized,” said Darcus.

One of the first things they’ll look at, is

to see what worked in other communities, she explained.

“I suspect I will find that if you buildcooperatives within the community, youcan maintain the ties within the commun-ity,” she noted.

One of the other things that Darcus willlook at is to study the grinding stonesto determine if they can see a use-wearpattern. “Certain seeds make differentmarks,” she said.

Ongoing job action by teacherssince September is quashing the inter-national aid efforts of local WestviewSecondary students and teachers.

Westview math teacher GeorgeFarkas was hoping to take 10 studentsto Uganda next spring for about 10

days, but an application for such atrip must be in a year ahead. Thatcan’t be done during job action,Farkas explained.

“Everything is on hold until thestrike is over,” he said, noting thatseeking permission from the schoolboard is only part of the issue. Histeam must also raise about $15,000 inaid money before the excursion (on

top of the $3,000-$4,000 each studentwould have to pay for the trip), andhe fears being unable to coordinatemany of the traditional fundraisershas pushed that goal out of reach, too.

In the past six years, Farkas andhis students – who unite under thebanner of Students That Care – raisedmore than $40,000 to help feed, edu-cate, and support children in Uganda.

Among the awareness and fundrais-ing efforts halted by the job action,Farkas said a district dodgeball com-petition, held the last five years, wascancelled, as was this month’s GuluWalk, and a dance competition.

“When the strike started, we puteverything on hold and now we’ll waitand see what happens,” Farkas said.

Soccer players raised moneyto help other players abroadget uniforms.

by Sylver [email protected]

As a group of soccer kids read-ied themselves for a big night outthe next day at BC Place to watchCanada play Costa Rica duringthe Olympic qualifiers, they heardsomething that startled them.

The Haitian women’s nationalteam arrived in Vancouver for thetournament without a lot of lug-gage.

The team didn’t even have asecond set of jerseys, which ismandatory at the qualifiers.

That’s when membersof the U11 Pitt MeadowsPride select and U11 PittMeadows Junior Capsselect B kicked into gearand organized a one-dayfundraising blitz.

“Within a matter of 12hours we had coordin-ated the fundraiser. By8 a.m. we had sent outemails and had crewsat the rec centre and onHarris Road. In five hours weraised $3,500,” explained JamieSchwingenschloegl, the coach ofboth local teams.

After watching the Canadiannationals beat the Costa Rica 5-1on Jan. 23, about a dozen repre-sentatives of the two Pitt teamsheaded over to the Chop House, where the Haitian team was fin-ishing up dinner.

“I think they were really happy, but they were tired, too, from along day. They played right beforeCanada,” said 10-year-old SiennaKraus. (The Haitian team hadplayed against Cuba, beating them

3-0.)“We got their auto-

graphs and they were real-ly nice,” Sienna added.

MakenzySchwingenschloegl, 10, wasimpressed by the cultural differ-ence between the two groups.

“I think it was really funbecause we speak different lan-guages and they did Haitian dan-ces for us,” said Makenzy aboutthe meeting.

“They were talking to us andtelling us they were happy to getthe money. It felt really good tohelp them,” she added.

“Even though we support theCanadian team it was betterto give the money to the teamfrom Haiti because they came toCanada with no second jersey and

were split up in hotels, too.”Brendan Pardy, a nine-year-old

who goes to Edith McDermottElementary, said it was “prettycool” to be involved with thefundraising.

“It makes me feel solucky to have all thesethings and they can’teven afford jerseys orcleats,” he said.

Ten-year-old SierrahBurrows, who attendsFairview Elementary, summed it up.

“It’s like donating foodbut it’s better becausethey can buy what they want. Itfeels good because you are givingthem what they need,” explainedSierrah.

“It was amazing. That was the

best part of the night for me. Itwas amazing to see their reaction. They were shocked we did thatfor them. They were so happy andso were we.”

The team’s giving spiritdoesn’t end here.

In the past year, thetwo teams have collectedmore than 2,000 itemsof food door-to-door forthe Friends In Need FoodBank, and raised morethan $1,000 for CanadianTire’s Jumpstart program.

The club was also partof a boot swap that gener-

ates hundreds of dollars each yearfor KidSport, an organization thatremoves financial barriers pre-venting some children from play-ing organized sports.

Maple Ridge Secondarystudents take part in anevent to fight hunger.

by Sylver [email protected]

A worldwide movement hap-pened at Maple Ridge Secondaryon Feb. 24 and 25, as a group ofstudents abstained from food for30 hours to help raise money andawareness for World Vision.

About 70 students pledgedthe $30 it cost to take part in 30Hours of Famine.

“Every $30 raised can sup-port a child in an underdevel-oped country for one month,”explained Jeff Chen, a Grade 12student and co-chair of the com-mittee HOPE, which organizedthe event.

HOPE stands for Helping OtherPeople Everywhere and is a stu-

dent activist group led by Jeffand co-chair Rachel Carrier.

“It isn’t that much, $30, ifyou think about it, that’s avideo game, plus we had pledgeforms,” said Grade 10 HOPEmember Jessica Chen, whoadded that at lunch time thegroup set up a table in the cafe-teria to offer information, sup-port, and pledge forms to anyinterested students.

“For the 30 Hour Famine, westarted with a brief videothat showed impoverishedchildren in underdevelopednations. Then to break theice, we played musical chairsand Duck Duck Goose, whichwe aptly renamed Hungry,Hungry, Thirsty,” said Jeff.

Every year, thousands ofstudents unite to do the 30Hour Famine. World Visionsays that hunger kills a child inthe developing world every 10seconds. The funds that students

raise by doing thefamine help provide

critical food and care for hungrykids around the world.

HOPE has about 40 members

who actively participate in meet-ings and events. It was estab-lished before any of the currentmembers were students at MRSS,said Jeff. He became involved in

Grade 10 and then became chairin Grade 12.

The last international eventHOPE participated in was Vowof Silence on Nov. 30. About 80students refrained from talking, texting, tweeting, emailing, etc.

While this is usually a fundrais-er that raises money for childrenwho are denied human rightsand denied their voice, HOPEtook part only in an awarenesscapacity.

“We didn’t do it as a fundrais-er. It’s hard enough to get kids toparticipate,” he explained.

“We had a lot of Grade 8 kidsparticipate, which is really good, because they will be running thisgroup in years to come,” saidJeff.

“For the 30 Hour Famine wehad support from Save-On-Foodsand Cooper’s, so we were ableto distribute juice boxes everyhour. We also had granola bars, yogurt, and fruit for breakfast.”

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Mar. 11 - Mar. 17, 2012★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Aries March 21 - April 19: This is your lastweek of weariness, obligations, restrictions andlow charisma. Be spiritual, charitable, and cleanup lingering threads with government and “headoffice.” Avoid new projects now through April 3.You’re heading into indecisiveness – or mistakes– in your work zone. (You, co-workers, or those onanother level, might misunderstand directions andcommunications, which can cause the mistakes; bealert, and ask if you feel confused.) Sunday/Mondaybring mystery, and lucky financial action. Be duteousTuesday to Friday: a possibly momentous careerdevelopment looms.Taurus April 20-May 20: It’s your last week ofwishing and hoping, of socializing and happiness,so enjoy it to the fullest. A major relationship mightstart this week, or you might stumble upon a majoropportunity, negotiate/litigate successfully, orrelocate. Yet another major phenomena – Mercuryretrograde, says don’t start anything new, normake any big commitments, un-doable changes,or promises now through April 3. But if you lookcarefully, that relationship, relocation, negotiation, etc., might be a form of correcting a past mistake.(Likely one that occurred in the past three months.)Gemini May 21-June 20: What is it? A past goodor bad deed coming due? Or a revision to a big stepyou took before (perhaps recently, since November2011)? Or something you’ve long wanted or plannedon? In any case, three things are happening now:1) indecision, mistakes and delays affect ongoingprojects, and will cripple brand new ones; 2) the past, past contacts, ideas, ventures, situations, tend torecur; and 3) almost every day this week, good fortuneaffects your financial, debt, investment, sexual, deephealth and research activities. Be optimistic and brave– by next week, you’ll celebrate.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Start nothing newbefore April 4. Until then, protect ongoing venturesfrom delays, mistakes and indecision – have a“Plan B” ready. Make lists before you shop, double-check addresses, dollar figures, etc. I’ve told you forseveral years that 2008 to 2023 will bring true love– this is one of the weeks this might occur, especiallySunday/Monday or Thursday/Friday. However, thisrelationship might have some connection to the past– e.g., introduced by a “long lost” friend or relative,or he/she’s connected to a job/career you once held, etc. A big wish can come true! Communicate.Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Start nothing brandnew before April 4. Protect ongoing projects andrelationships from misunderstandings, shortages anddelays (especially in financial, intimate, health, legal, travel, educational and cultural zones). Welcomeresurrected or returning ventures and people fromthe past – important success potential lies here. Youcould flow into major luck/success in career, work, earnings, possessions and money. (In all this, your“foundations” are key – property, home, family.Examine/improve these Sunday/Monday.) A formersweet, sensual person (or boss) might return.Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Start nothing newbefore April 4. Until then, protect ongoing projects, situations and relationships from mistakes, delaysand misunderstandings; and, this week, at least,welcome/resurrect links and ventures from thepast. Great happenings, splendid fortune, cancome from the past now (this Sunday to Friday)especially in legal, international, cultural, love, intellectual, educational, travel, romantic, creative, speculative and child-oriented zones. Be pro-active; try everything in these zones that has a“past connection.” E.g., a returning relationshipcould lead to marriage.

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Start nothing newbefore April 4, especially in relationships, litigation, negotiation, public interfacing, and work, health anddiet zones. Protect ongoing projects and links frommistakes, delays and misunderstandings. There is one“escape” from what seems like a dead-end: the past. This week, especially, people and projects returningfrom the past can be a huge blessing – primarily inreal estate, home, family, security, garden, investment, lifestyle, health and sexual zones. E.g., a home you’vealways wanted becomes available. Buy it! Someonemight return, offer intimacy.Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Start nothing new beforeApril 4, especially in social, sexual, financial, group, health and lifestyle zones. A real success might comein the present week in relationships, relocation, partnering (in love or business) dealings with thepublic, negotiations, litigation, and communications, travel and paperwork – IF a past connection exists.E.g., beginning a new lawsuit, advertising campaignor relationship, will likely fail; but re-establishing arelationship or finishing a neglected application couldlead to great success. Communication important.Love, romance, joy exist!Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Until April 4, startnothing new. Instead, protect ongoing projects andrelationships from mistakes, misunderstandingsand delays. (E.g., your factory might run out ofsteel fittings halfway through a major order: soorder much more, or pay a premium for quickdelivery, etc.) Until April, past contacts andventures offer openings and success. An oldflame might return. The week ahead offers hugesuccess in earnings, work and health (and tosome degree in sensuality). A hidden (former) allycould be instrumental – or a government agency, institution. Remember, the “past!”

Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: I keep tellingyou a new future, new hopes and goals and a newsocial circle, will come to you (2009-2023) via thedifficulties that seem to beset you. (Moaning aboutyour losses would be like renovating your house, andwailing about the destruction of old walls, even thoughyou know the end product will be splendiferous. Youare being renovated, by life, by God.) You take a giantstep toward this future this week – by resurrectingthe past. Do so! Romance, a risk, a speculation, acreative accomplishment are involved. Legal, travel, cultural zones also benefit. Huge luck here.Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Start nothing beforeApril 4. Protect ongoing projects from mistakes, delays, shortages and misunderstandings. Your“connections” to the past could prove very fruitfulthis week. A returning project, person or situationcan bring splendid luck in financial, sexual, health, research, management, real estate, family, home andgovernment-institution-corporate zones. Jump onanything “returning” here. (E.g., a house you deeplydesired now comes back on the market – seize it.)A former friend might appear; this isn’t really an oldflame. Indirectly, money/career receive a boost.Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Start nothing new beforeApril 4. Until then, protect your ongoing interestsfrom false moves, misunderstandings, mistakes anddelays. Have a “Plan B.” Your energy and charismaremain high. Many, many strands from past actionscome together this week in an explosion of luck andsignificance. Don’t hesitate; do act – but preferablyon something from the past or connected to it. Themajor areas affected are relationships, money/earnings, possessions, important communicationsor travel connected to your career or social standing, and group affairs. A wish will come true.
