Moore in an auditorium atSFUs Surrey campus, whereCBC radio was broadcastingtheir debate.Read, who has been critical of the

long-term transit plan since beingelected last fall, had strong wordsfor TransLink representatives whovisited Maple Ridge City hall lastmonth.She told the TransLink execu-

tives at the time that the people ofMaple Ridge would have a hard timeaccepting a tax hike without signifi-cant guarantees of increased transitservice.The transit plan, developed by

the Mayors Council, includes thepromise of a B-Line bus for MapleRidge and Pitt Meadows, funnellingpassengers directly to the Evergreen

SkyTrain line in Coquitlam withinthree to five years of a yes vote.TransLink representatives also

noted that another train would beadded to the West Coast Expresscommuter service, while overall busservice would get a bump, especiallyin areas like Thornhill and Albion.However, the majority of the

upgrades included in the $7.5-bil-lion plan are slated for other muni-cipalities, including a new light railSkyTrain and subway in Surrey andVancouver respectively.To finance the plan, costs would

be partly recouped through a 0.5-per-cent increase to the provincialsales tax in Metro Vancouver com-munities.

For Becker, the plan isthe best deal our previousmayor could broker for theCity of Pitt Meadows.He added that the region

needs to take action to com-bat congestion, sooner ratherthan later.People are upset with

TransLink I get that, I sym-pathize with that, he said.But at the end of the day,

this isnt a referendum onTransLink, its a referendumon congestion.Becker spoke about the

benefits of a yes votein the transit referendumWednesday night at aRotary dinner hosted atMeadow Gardens GolfCourse in Pitt Meadows.

The mail-out plebiscite will askvoters whether they approve of aregional tax increase of 0.5 per centto help pay for transit improvementsover the next 10 years.Only Metro Vancouver residents

are eligible to vote, meaning Missionresidents served by the West CoastExpress wont have a say in the pleb-iscite.Yet a large print advertisement ran

in The TIMES last month, urging ayes vote from Mission residents.Maple Ridges Linda Meyer sub-

mitted a complaint to Elections BCregarding the ad.The ad was paid for by the Mayors

Just days before her 21st birthday, up-and-coming Maple Ridge country singerMadeline Merlo was overseas saying thanksto Canadian soldiers through song.Merlo was one of 25 Canadians hand

picked to take a seven-day trip where shewas allowed to perform for members of theCanadian military who are serving in Italyand the Persian Gulf.I have family in the American air force

and it had always been something Id wantedto do, Merlo told The TIMES.I had mentioned it to my [record] label,

and somehow the stars aligned and I gotthe call that the offer was there if I wantedto go.She happily joined a team that included

a comedian, fellow musician Tim Hicks,Arlene Dickinson from Dragons Den,Toronto Argonauts and Montreal Alouettesfootball players, and retired NHLer DaveTiger Williams. The trip featured a stop inSicily, to visit the Fredericton Navy ship, andthey then flew to Kuwait.The entire experience was really incred-

ible. I was able to travel to places I had neverbeen before, had the opportunity to thankthe people who protect me everyday and itwas all because of music. All because I writesongs and sing them, she said.Despite suffering from some epic jet lag,

Merlo said the trip was well worth it, thehighlight being a chance to meet so manymembers of Canadian Armed Forces.They were all so intelligent, articulate, and

passionate about what they were doing. I had

the honour of staring bravery inthe face for seven days and it truly changedmy life. I think about them all the time, sheshared.I would do it again in a heartbeat. In fact,

I have my fingers crossed that another tripwill arise soon.Merlo wishes every Canadian had the

opportunity to do something like that.It opened my eyes to the reality of what

our forces go through every day. Workingseven days a week, 18 hours a day, beingaway from there families for months at atime, and literally putting their lives on theline for the safety of our beautiful country,she said.

Merlo has since taken it upon her-self to share her story whenever pos-sible, and wishes to bring awareness tothese extraordinary individuals. Nothingmeans more to them then to know that theCanadian people are behind them, she said.While Merlo is getting ready for a summer

full of shows and festivals across the country,she admitted shes awestruck by this recent,life-altering trip.That was a huge moment for me, Merlo

added, grateful that music has already takenher on such an incredible journey andoptimistic about whats ahead. She hopes, forinstance, to relocate to Nashville soon to pur-sue her career on a bigger scale.

The question of how much control theCity has over garbage dumping on privateproperty was brought up at the March 4Pitt Meadows City council meeting.Councillor Mike Stark brought forth

communication from Jack Emberly,regarding garbage dumping on theKatzie Slough specifically at the end ofMcTavish Road.Is this property

within the purviewof the City? Starkasked.The pictures

appear to be all onprivate property,responded KateZanon, directorof operations anddevelopment servi-ces for the City.Is it normal to

have debris like that going down into theKatzie Slough? Stark inquired further.Thats a difficult question to answer,

responded Zanon.Large portions of the of the Citys

sloughs and ditches front onto privateproperty, which means staff doesnt havea way to routinely view and see the stat-us of them.We are heavily reliant on the public

letting us know if there is a concern, andthen we can request permission to enterthe property and investigate, Zanonexplained.Staff has been working to get in touch

with the property owner and discusspotential solutions, Zanon said, anddespite quite a few challenges getting intouch with the property owner, contacthas been made.Stark noted he visited the site himself,

and it was quite devastating to see thegarbage and mattresses that are dumpedat the end of McTavish, he said.I know theres a gate, and thats

always been open, and it seems like

people go down there and just dump allsorts of things.Stark asked if it would be in order to

make a motion to have staff bring back areport to council regarding the situation.We need to frame that up with a

few more specifics, said Pitt MeadowsMayor John Becker. Were all appalledby this... so if we could request of staff tofind out what authority we currently havein our bylaws to require private propertyowners to clean up their property.If no such authority exists, can we find

a bylaw that will give us that authority?he asked. What is the jurisdiction ofthe City, vis-a-vis the waterways? Whatare the penalty options for the City to

impose, and if weare powerless, whothen is respon-sible?On Friday, Stark

told the TIMES thematter had beengiven to staff toinvestigate.The issue of

illegal dumpingisnt new to theCity though.Many of you

remember the situation we wrestled withfor some years with the submerged bargeon Alouette Lake because of jurisdictionsand unwillingness of any of the authour-ities to do a thing about it, Becker saidon Tuesday.The situation touched a nerve with

the mayor, who said the City talks abouttax freezes, property tax reductions andso on, but that doesnt mean a thing ifwere leaving the grandchildren of ourgrandchildren a bunch of crap in theenvironment.Becker would like the property owner

to come and have a chat with us.It may be the owner has issues with

public access to their private land, andits not their garbage thats appearing inlocal waterways, he speculated. Maybewe can assist them with things like Ihate to say it surveillance cameras orcontrolled access, I dont know.What Becker does know, however, is

that this is not acceptable to me or mycolleagues. We just cant have this.

Ted Hume has seena lot of differentmusical acts comethrough the doorsof Kingfishers WaterfrontBar & Grill in Maple Ridge.But when two guys from

the Yukon dropped in dur-ing one of the pubs openmic jam sessions, he wit-nessed something ratherunique.One of the guys got up

and played a handsaw,Hume recalled.The northern duo didnt

come specifically for thejam, Hume clarified, butwere in town for the night,heard it was going on, anddecided to drop by.Im always surprised at

what youllsee and/orhear, herelated.It was

just one ofa numberof momentsthat comesto Humesmind sinceKingfishers started doingopen mic nights aboutthree years ago.Hume is the manager of

Kingfishers and said theopen mic nights stemmedfrom a conversation he hadwith James Buddy Rogers.James is one of the inte-

gral parts of the music tal-ent here, said Hume. Wetalked it back and forthand offered up a Fridaynight for a jam night.Kingfishers features live

music every weekend, andopen mic takes place everysecond Friday.We call it Jammin

at the Fish, Hume saidJames and his guys arethe group that hosts it.Then on Saturdays, thesame group will come back

and bring a special guest.Hume describes the open

mic as Blues-centric butsaid anybody is welcome.Live, blues-centred per-

formance venues are some-what of a dying breed,and Hume speculated thatmay be more related tothe genre itself, but eitherway its nice to be anestablishment that canoffer it.Getting a chance to play

is fairly straightforward.People come in, intro-

duce themselves to James,and we have an atmos-phere that welcomeseverybody, he said. Wehave some amazing localmusicians in the commun-ity, and Im shocked some-times at the talent that justkeeps popping up.There have been some

memorable guests whohave come by the localestablishment.We had a guy who was

a friend of James that hestarted touring with, whowould come in once in

Stay with me here, becausewere going to talk about howyou can understand Canadianpolitics through repeated view-ings of a Brad Pitt movie.On Saturday, New Brunswick

Converative MP John Williamsonanswered a question about theTemporary Foreign WorkersProgram by saying, It makesno sense to pay whities to stayhome while we bring in brownpeople to work in these jobs.Whether you think this was

more racist than stupid or more stupid thanracist, lets consider that Williamson is a fairlyimportant Conservative figure a former nation-al director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federationand a former head of communications for thePrime Ministers office.This is seemingly terrible politics.Unless it isnt. Because it might not matter at

all for the success or failure of his party, andthats why were going to be talking about BradPitt movies.I wasnt that interested in Moneyball when it

first came out, because I do not care one iotaabout baseball. But then I heard that it waslargely about statistics and economics, and I wasintrigued. (Make your nerd jokes now, its onlygoing to get worse from here on in.)The film is based on a book by Michael Lewis,

and had the subtitle The Art of Winning anUnfair Game. Both in the movie and in the book,theres a mantra that comes up over and over,repeated in various ways.He gets on base.Thats all that Billy Beane, the general manager

of the Oakland As, cared about. He started pick-ing up cheap, cheap players (because it was allhe could afford) who were unwanted for a var-iety of reasons.In the movie, this is dramatized in a scene in

which his scouts keep trying to suggest variousreasons why they dont like his picks.

This guys injured. That guysold, past his prime. This onesoverweight, that one throwsweird.To all these complaints, there

is just one answer. He gets onbase.So thats how you have to

understand modern politics.Being a good legislator is a dif-

ficult skill. It requires knowledge,experience, personal diplomacy,the ability to work with others,and most importantly, wisdom.

Getting elected is a difficult skill. It requiresdetermination, some level of charisma, and acertain ruthlessness.It doesnt matter how good a legislator you are,

though, if you cant get elected. And it mattersvery little how good you are if your party cantwin.So does it matter if John Williamson said

something really stupid? Not necessarily. Is he ina swing riding? Does he represent a large popula-tion of new Canadians? Is he already vulnerablefor some other reason?If yes, then he could be in trouble, because

this might impact his ability to get elected again.The party would look askance at him.If no if his constituents are fine with this

or if they accept his apology, then Willaimsonssuperiors are unlikely to do anything.The ranks of every party are packed with

members who have said racist, sexist, homo-phobic, or just jaw-droppingly stupid things.Not to mention those who have been caughtout in conflicts of interest, or who have billedridiculous government expenses. And all the par-ties have members who are idealistic, dedicatedlegislators, who do not shoot off their mouths inidiotic ways.But theres one question thats uppermost in

the minds of their party leaders, come electiontime:Does he get on base?

Fraud victimsare not alone

Have you fallen for a scam? And inretrospect, did the whole thing seem soobvious that youre terribly embarrassedthat you fell for it at all? Too embar-rassed to report it to police?

Thats what the scam artist is count-ing on: that youll feel so foolish thatyoull let them get away with it.

The embarrassment card is especiallyeffective in so-called romance scams.

If youve been had, youre not alone far from it. In fact, you have morecompany than you probably realizebecause of the embarrassment.

It all seems so harmless at first: abrief introduction between strangers,likely initiated via Facebook or throughan online dating site. Communicationbegins. Frequency of messaging increas-es. Conversations are intense. Photosare shared. Feelings develop. A relation-ship forms

The ruses are deliberate, calculatedmoney schemes created by experiencedfraudsters to get as much money as pos-sible, usually from lonely adults.

Cultivation of a relationship can takemonths, often building through flowersand small gifts, before the hints beginthat all is not well. At some point,an imagined trust is established, andrequests for money begin.

The lines go something like this: Imdesperate Its just this once I prom-ise I will pay you back I love you.

It may be embarrassing to real-ize youve been had but it shouldbe even more embarrassing to realizeyoure letting someone get away with it,that youve effectively if unwittingly financed the fraudsters next project.

March is Fraud Prevention Month,and the RCMP want people to be wary and to be aware that, the police areon their side and want to stop the vic-timization.

Dear Editor,Regarding our swimming pool in Maple

Ridge needing major repairs at a cost ofmillions of dollars [Falling pipes forcepool closure, Feb. 3, TIMES], it is a wasteof money to rebuild the old pool complexlocated in the wrong location, like theRCMP building and our City hall.I cannot believe this mess was ever

approved a number of years back, with noparking to accommodate all involved.The swimming pool should be a new

complex attached to Planet Ice communityice rinks, where there is lots of parking, lotsof land available.The Planet Ice complex itself is also in

need of serious repairs, and now would be

the time to do it along with a new swim-ming pool complex. It should be on thelines of the Mission Community Complex,where the pool and ice rinks are together.That whole area around the current swim-

ming pool is a disaster that should neverhave been built there in the first place.Really poor planning.

Dear Editor,The property I live on in Whonnock

has been in the same family for about100 years. The people who live here haveinvested their lives in making this a placewe all love to come home to.For the past quarter century, I have

lived with the good and bad of ruralliving, without fear and for the mostpart without a key to my front door.People here respect their neigh-

bours privacy, but are always readyto help if the need arises.The lifestyle is not for everyone, but it is

what we want and we wish to preserve it.Because this area is in the Agricultural

Land Reserve, subdivisions are not a dailythreat, and until recently, neither were largeindustrial developments.Six months ago I realized that a develop-

ment at the corner of 272nd Street and BellAvenue was suspiciously more than soilremediation for a tree farm, which is whatthe entire area had been told was proposedfor the old turkey farm that had beenrecently sold.There had been many feet of top soil

removed from the property, and hundredsof loads of gravel brought in. The develop-ers were blasting daily, with only the trad-itional three warning blasts before the win-dow-rattling whump of the explosives.The soil preparation was dangerously

close to York/Whonnock Creek, a fish-bear-ing stream and from which some of theneighbours obtain their drinking water.I telephoned municipal hall, and was

advised that there was a federal medicinal

marijuana grow operation application forthe property, and that, because it was fed-eral and provincial, the developers had norequirement to sign the property as to whatthey were planning (only a sign indicating

construction of an agricultural build-ing when permits are granted), andthat the residents had no recourse totry and stop it because the ALC hasdictated that commercial-size medicalmarijuana grow ops are an agricul-tural land use.Given that a horse barn built

without municipal blessing and all man-ner of permits is considered a threat to thewell-being of our neighbourhood, it seemsludicrous that this project can go forwardwithout anyone even knowing what it is.Now residents have had it confirmed that

there is to be a 40,000-square-foot green-house built in the heart of a rural residentialarea, to one of Canadas largest legal med-ical marijuana grow operations, completewith 24-hour-a-day light pollution, securityfences, and concern that undesirables mightbe attracted to such a facility.While I have no personal moral stand on

the growing, or using of marijuana, I findthis whole process to be particularly un-Canadian, and I believe unconstitutional.When community input is demanded for

Stringing of the transmission line (conductors) along the newtransmission towers for the Interior to Lower Mainland TransmissionProject has begun.

Helicopters are required for this work. The contractor has obtained thenecessary permits and permissions and is in compliance with TransportCanada requirements.

Conductor ends will need to be joined with the use of an implosiveconnector that is a metallic sleeve with a small charge in it for eachconductor. Using safe and controlled methods, the sleeves are detonatedwhich compresses (welds) the conductor ends together. This split-secondprocess will create several ashes with smoke and very loud bangs.

Trafc control measures will be in place as needed. Work hours willconform to municipal bylaws.

The Whos bombastic rockanthem Baba ORiley roared fromspeakers inside the Maple RidgeBoxing Clubs gym as boxers wereput through their paces.The frenetic pace of their work-

out skipping rope furiously, bur-pees, shadow boxing, push-ups, aquick jog around Memorial PeacePark repeated over, and over,and over again, was enough totake a bystanders breath away.The gym in the Maple Ridge

Leisure Centre building is whereboxers, recreational and competi-tive, learn the ropes.Helping to conduct the workouts

is Rick Funk, a decorated amateurand Maple Ridge Hometown Herowho has returned to his roots tobecome part of the clubs coach-ing staff.Funks boxing resume is impres-

sive to say the least.Before hanging up his gloves in

1989, Funk racked up a 75-8 ama-teur record, won the U19 provin-cial championships and earned asilver in the national champion-ships in 1988, received the JimmySymes award for top boxer inB.C., and competed for TeamCanada in the U19 A team inSan Juan, Puerto Rico, losing in aclose decision to the world cham-pion.Joining Funk are fellow coaches

Jason Burke, Bill Drewitt, andBrad Scott.Under the B.C. Amateur Boxing

umbrella, the club has five com-

petitive boxers who Scott said areshowing a lot of improvement andgood potential.The goal, Scott said, is to con-

tinue a tradition of excellenceestablished by longtime coachJohn Skanks, who started manag-ing the Maple Ridge Boxing Clubin 1981.After battling health problems

for three-and-a-half years, the manaffectionately known as Popsby the youngsters he trained diedfrom congestive health failure onJan. 13, 2014 at the age of 85.Johns widow Carol is still

involved with the club as its sec-retary, registrar, treasurer, andgeneral manager. She sat near thefront doors of the club, watchingthe young boxers, who filled theroom around the boxing ring, go

through what Scott describes as amilitary-style workout.We put them through a very

vigorous workout, Scott said.Its a team effort. If one guy isnot doing the workout properly,everybody else pays for it. Ifsomeone comes in late, everybodydoes 20 pushups for the personwho comes in late.Scott said the Maple Ridge

Boxing Club is one to be reckonedwith, but for those who join theclub for recreationalpurposes, the coach-es dont push themto get into the ringcompetitively.Weve had kids

come in here look-ing down on theground and nowthey hold theirheads up high withpride, Scott said.One of the clubs

busiest boxers is 21-year-oldBrennan Demas, who holds a 4-2record in the 147-pound weightclass. Most recently, he split hislast two bouts against HassanHamza from Griffins BoxingClub.Id like to go nationals and see

where it takes me, said Demas,who is a year-and-a-half into hisamateur boxing career. I stillhave a few fights to go beforeIm open class, so 10 fights afterthat, and come that time Ill tryto make provincials and go fromthere.

Demas, who trains at the clubfour nights a week, admitted thathe was initially nervous to be inthe ring, trading punches.But hes since settled into a

groove.His clubmate Mac Huttons

had his first bout on Feb. 11 inMission and enjoyed the experi-ence, despite losing a split deci-sion to Franklin Curry from BridgeStreet Boxing.It was kind of scary but after

the first round I was pretty com-fortable,Huttonnoted.Absorbing

his firstpunch in acompetitivebout wasnt abig shock for21-year-oldHutton.Thats

because hesexperienced it before, many times,during sparring sessions.When I got hit for the first time

in there, I realized, Ive been hitharder in this gym, he said. Iwasnt too worried about it. Itsweird how you grow to love beingpunched in the face.Scott pointed out that 13-year-

old Jackson Smith, who saw hisfirst ring action recently, is ayoung up-and-comer with a lotof potential.

The Golden Ears bridgewill be full of traffic thisweekend.Foot traffic that is.On Sunday, March 15

the Golden Ears HalfMarathon and 10K willtake place for the fifth yearin a row.Both races begin in

Osprey Village, at theSouth Bonson CommunityCentre, cross over theGolden Ears Bridge toLangley,and thenfinish backin PittMeadows.After com-

ing off thebridge, the10K willfinish along the river atOsprey Village, and thehalf marathon will headonto the trails and Dykealong the river.The course will then do

an out and back along flatscenic trails, running pastthe airport and finishingback at Osprey Village.

Its unique to be ableto run over the bridge,said Phil Ellis, ownerof Pennisula RunnersLangley.

Ellis andPenninsulaRunners isthe brainsbehind therace.When

we firstintroduced

this race, the bridge wasbrand new and it wasquite a novel idea to runacross the bridge, saidEllis.Its unique and a neat

feature.About 200 people are

expected to participatein this weekends race, a

number that Ellis said hasbeen pretty consistentover the years.A lot of local runners

from both sides of thewater, Ellis commented,although some do comefrom further away.Last year, a pair of

Langley runners took topspot in their respective cat-egories.The start times for the

races on Sunday are 8:30a.m. for the half marathon,and 9:15 a.m. for the 10K.All fini
