On Saturday, January 28, The Friends In Need
Food Bank is presenting their major fundraising
and fun event, celebrating Chinese New Year’s
“Year of the Dragon”.The event will be held at the Pitt Meadows Heritage Hall, 12460 Harris Road, Pitt Meadows, BC. Doors open at 6:00pm with dinner (Chinese Buffet) served at 7:00pm. Tickets are $25.00 per person, and includes a Chinese Dinner and an exciting evening fi lled with live entertainment, live and silent auction and much more. SPECIAL $350 full table of 16! For tickets call 604-466-3663
A couple of years ago when the Pitt Meadows Lion’s Club (which formerly ran this event), were looking for someone to partner with for their annual Chinese New Year’s party – the Friends In Need Food Bank Board of Directors jumped at the opportunity to take an already successful event and eventually make it their own. 2012 marks the third year in a row that the Friends In Need Food Bank has held Chinese New Year’s and they are hoping for it to be as successful as ever.
Those who have been to the Chinese New Years Celebration will remember experiencing fi rst-class multi-cultural entertainment including lively Lion dancing, authentic calligraphy drawing, Chinese potters, live and silent auctions. Come out and enjoy a great evening with friends and neighbours and support the local Friends In Need Food Bank.
We are urging everyone to buy tickets NOW- as this event ALWAYS sells out early.

Eco SchoolThe Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows Environmental School
Project is about learning and teaching differently.
One of the signifi cant differences is the classroom is
outdoors in the natural world. Students are learning in
real time, in nature, hands-on and in context.
How different is the Eco School to ‘Regular’ School?
One Teachers Perspective…
After three months of learning outdoors, I have come to the
conclusion that it is “very different!” Being in the woods
doing place based activities has changed our interactions
and experiences. I didn’t realize the differences would be
this big.
When we learn in the forest we have abundant space and it
seems to give the students the opportunity to move more
and have a greater sense of freedom and control. Being
outside on a daily basis has produced a sense of adventure
and expectation among the children. Instead of bringing
learning activities into the classroom, our surroundings
have become the topics we learn about and the children’s
curiosity is often what steers us.
It has been fascinating to watch the children dissect salmon
themselves and discover the swim bladder, and that a
salmon heart is the shape of a pyramid. It surprised me
when politics became our topic of study as the children
built forts in the forest. It has been amazing to watch their
experiences change their view of Alco Park. It went from
being a place we used, to a home we share with other living
things. Their respect for nature has defi nitely deepened.
Now I wonder what we will discover next and I am excited to
see what we will learn from our changing surroundings.

Benson had the same home for all of his 9 years, but when his family moved he could not go with them. He was a great cat who lived in harmony with dogs and tolerated other cats. He is eager to make new friends. Benson is a loving, endearing cat. He has an old injury to his leg that may cause arthritis in the
future. Otherwise he is a healthy fellow who desperately needs to spend his senior years in a loving home. Armstrong is a good-natured, lovable, gentle boy, who is accepting of the other cats and seems comfortable around children. His family left him behind when they moved. He lived on a neighbour’s deck for two months and then began asking to come inside. That is when he came to us. Armstrong is probably starved for someone to love him and greets everyone eagerly looking for a pet. We hope he can win over a new family and enjoy being a safe and beloved family member for the rest of his life. This beautiful black cat has a heart of gold.

Tweet Up A Tweet Up brings the whole Twitter experience full circle.
It’s a fun and casual way of networking and collecting for
the Food Bank is a great way to give back to the community
at the same time.
On January 18th, 2012 Twitter users from Pitt Meadows
and Maple Ridge will gather at the Buffalo Club Bar and Grill
in Maple Ridge for the 5th “Ridge Meadows Tweet Up”
to meet face-to-face and to collect donations for Friends In
Need Food Bank.
Brenda Garcia of Thrive Solutions and Andrea Walker of
Walker Park Media, who originally met through Twitter,
decided it was time to get locals off line and organized the
fi rst Twitter-inspired event last February.
Since the inaugural Tweet Up, the event has seen over 100
participants, has raised over $300 and brought in over 200
lbs of food for the Friends in Need Food bank.
“We saw this as an opportunity to do something great
for the community so we included an admission fee of a
monetary or non-perishable donation to the Friends In Need
Food bank” says Andrea.

The growing popularity of the weekly Saturday Community
Suppers at the CEED Centre has set Port Haney abuzz. The
suppers attract working couples, street-entrenched folk and
volunteers alike for camaraderie and good food.
Although the suppers are served in Port Haney, the network
of people, businesses and organizations that support them
extends far beyond. The suppers are primarily fi nanced
and prepared by the St. George Anglican Street Ministry.
Meridian Meats and other businesses regularly donate
ingredients for hearty chilies and stews, while the Friends
in Need Food Bank supplies sandwich bread. Other faith and
secular groups also contribute.
The suppers were originally inspired by Teri Mitchell and
her late husband Robert. Robert knew everyone in the
neighbourhood by name. Originally, they saw marginalized
people who needed food, but soon came to understand that
the sense of community they provided was far more valuable.
After Robert’s death, Teri and her dedicated volunteers
carried on, partnering with the CEED Centre and tripling the
numbers to 130 people at times. Volunteers come from all
walks of life. This quick growth is attributable to the focus on
creating a welcoming, non-judgmental community.
Creating a Sense ofCommunity
Much needed donations of money or food can
be directed to Teri at
778-809-4610 or [email protected]
You are welcome to join it any Saturday.
Supper starts at 7:00 pm.
