Auburn is a city in King County, with a small portion in Pierce County, Washington. Thepopulation was 81,905 at the 2018 estimate United States Census. Auburn is a suburbin the Seattle metropolitan area, currently ranked the fifteenth largest city in the stateof Washington. Auburn is bordered by the cities of Federal Way, Pacific, and Algona tothe west, Sumner to the south, Kent to the north, and unincorporated King County tothe east. The Muckleshoot Indian Reservation is in or near the southern city limits.Auburn is located 25 miles from Seattle and 14 miles from Tacoma.
Due to the city’s close proximity, Seattle’s economy also affects Auburn’s. Seattle'seconomy is driven by a mix of older industrial companies, and "new economy" Internetand technology companies, service, design, and clean technology companies. The Portof Seattle, which also operates Seattle–Tacoma International Airport, is a major gatewayfor trade with Asia and cruises to Alaska. It also is the 8th largest port in the UnitedStates when measured by container capacity. Large companies continue to dominatethe business landscape. Five companies on Fortune 500's 2017 list of the UnitedStates' largest companies are headquartered in Seattle: Internet retailer Amazon.com;coffee chain Starbucks; department store Nordstrom; freight forwarder ExpeditorsInternational of Washington; and forest products company Weyerhaeuser.
Auburn is home to the Muckleshoot Casino which was opened in April 1995 and isowned and operated by the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe. The city is also home to the LakeTapps which is a reservoir which creates opportunities for fishing, boating, hiking andcamping. Seattle is about a 30-minute drive from Auburn, making it the perfect place tospend the day. Seattle is home to the vastness of Puget Sound, the outline of theOlympic Mountains off to the west and the colossal mass of Mount Rainier, the mostprominent peak in the United States. Visitors can savor these views for hours, from theelevated Kerry Park, the famous Space Needle, the Columbia Center or the Waterfront.The city is home to the Pike Place Market, the first ever Starbucks, the Seattle Center,the Museum of Pop Culture, the Chihuly Garden and Glass and so much more forvisitors to enjoy.
