Happy New Year and Welcome Back to School!

Thank you to the entire Maple Creek Public School community for an exciting four months. As a learning community we have set high expectations and we certainly intend to keep doing

the little things in order to achieve the big things. We wish Mrs. Rodgers well, as she begins

her retirement this month. Her commitment to teaching students will be greatly missed.

Welcome to Ms. Wisken who is beginning her career at Maple Creek P.S. teaching Grade 1.

Throughout Term One our goals of Mathematics, Modern Learning and Mental Health as

outlined by YRDSB, are interconnected in our School Plan for Improvement. As we continue to

build our partnership with families and the community, we applaud you for attending,

supporting and cheering on your child(ren) in school events, volunteering in many ways and

working with teachers to support learning. Our School Council members contribute by

responding to issues integral to improving student achievement. School Council, along with

your support has raised funds towards the purchasing of technology resources and other

school materials to ensure your child experiences the various 21st century learning

opportunities. Please join us at our next School Council meeting on Tuesday January 19th,

at 7 pm.

Our staff at Maple Creek continues to develop an inclusive and respectful school climate

through distributive leadership; bringing equity, innovation, knowledge, skills and passion

towards improving student achievement. Let us also highlight some of our student and staff

involvement in the many opportunities available including Me to We Club, Junior/Intermediate

Great Lakes Program, Eco morning announcements, Girls and Boys Intermediate Volleyball,

Book Fair 2015, Movie Night, Junior Engagement Dinner, Intermediate Music Trip to Maple

High School, JK Observation Week, PC4L’s Spirit Days, Gr. 7 & 8 Financial Literacy lunch

program, Junior Character Education, Intermediate Leadership groups and our annual Winter

Concert. A huge thank you to our volunteers, student teachers, student CYWs, as well as

cooperative education students from Maple High School who have all worked responsibly in

supporting literacy, numeracy and healthy living initiatives throughout the first term.

Your child is bringing home their First Term Report Card on February 19th, 2016. This report

contains information relating to both your child’s learning skills and academic performance

relative to the Ministry of Education’s grade level expectations. Both of these areas are

important. If students do not have good or excellent learning skills then this may impact

their ability to perform academically to the best of their ability. If your child is still

receiving an N (needs improvement) or an S (satisfactory) in any of the learning skills, then

attention must be paid to their personal goals. When you read your child’s report with them

talk about how you can support their intended improvements for the second term of school.

Your child’s teacher will comment on how he or she will be supported at school. These learning

skills are life skills, which, when mastered, may support students to future success

regardless of the academic/career pathways they choose.

We appreciate your ongoing support and invite you to keep this vibrant partnership happening!

Our strength is effective communication of a shared purpose and common vision which is

continued student progress and achievement for all.

Warning: Fire Route

Please be aware that the curb lanes in front of the school are designated as fire route lanes. We have posted

signs indicating this with the by-law number from the City of Vaughan. This means the by-law enforcement

officers can come around at any time and issue tickets to anyone who is parked or stopped in the fire route lane.

This is a major safety concern for us. These lanes need to remain clear in the event that emergency vehicles are

called to the school. Please keep the fire route lanes clear at all times. Do not park your vehicle in any of our

lanes in front of the school when dropping off your child’s lunch.

COLD WEATHER IS HERE!!

A reminder that ALL students are expected to go outside for recess. Please ensure that your

child(ren) is/are dressed appropriately for Canadian winter. If your child is not well enough to be out

at recess, he/she is probably too ill to be at school.

A change of clothes would be helpful for primary children should they get wet during the day. Please

make sure all items are labeled with your child’s name. Our “Lost and Found” bin gets filled up quickly

and belongings often go unclaimed.

Are You Moving?

Please let us know if you are planning a move. This information helps us immensely when

planning for next year. Please notify the school office, or send a note in with your child

as soon as possible.

“Me To We Club”

Thank-you Maple Creek for all of your support. “Me To We” Club is happy to announce that as a school we

collected 733 items for the Vaughan Food Bank. The Vaughan Fire department picked up the items to be

delivered during the holiday break. In addition, over 50 grade 1 and 2 students participated in our Bead Mania

sessions. They had a great time working with the Me To We club members creating terrific bracelets, necklaces

and key chains for themselves and their family. We raised over $140.00 for our Brick by Brick initiative towards

building a school in Kenya.

Coming Soon: Our “Me To We” Used Book and Small Treasure sale

It is that time again. Do you have any books that you have enjoyed and no longer need in your home? Do you have any small items, including small toys, trinkets and other small items that you would like to donate? Well the” Me To We” club would be happy to have these items. Please send in any books or items in good condition with your child to school during the month of January and the first two weeks of February. The sale will take place from March 1st to March 3rd. The books can be dropped off outside the library in the drop off box. The small treasure sale items can be dropped off in the office in the marked bin. We thank you in advance for your support for these activities. Ms. Romanelli and the Me To We Club

Junior/Senior Kindergarten Registration for

September 2016 Begins January 15, 2016

Children born in 2012 are eligible to attend Junior Kindergarten in September 2016. Children born in

2011, and not currently attending public school, are eligible for senior kindergarten in September.

Documents required for registration include:

Proof of child’s age (birth certificate/passport)

Proof of residency (for child and parent/guardian)

Citizenship and immigration status (where applicable)

Direction of school support form

Registrations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis starting on Friday, January 15,

2016. If you require further details, please telephone the school.

French Immersion Information Sessions and Registrations

YRDSB’s French Immersion (FI) Accommodation Plan provides long-term consistency and equity of

access to all students in York Region and will enable YRDSB to continue to offer the FI program to all who

wish to enrol. The FI program will be offered in Dual Track or Single Track settings, in a variety of

configurations.

In order to meet community needs and optimize available space in our schools, a community's

Grade 1-8 FI program may be provided over more than one school during the course of a student's FI education.

This will allow flexibility in addressing community needs and the opportunity to use existing space in

schools. More information is available on the Board’s website: www.yrdsb.ca. Please note: Some of the FI

accommodation plans will require facility modifications or the development of new schools and will require

short-term transition plans that might include overflow while we work toward the long-term vision. Overflow

refers to situations in which the Board directs students to attend a school other than their community

school or optional program for a specific period of time, as defined in Policy #108.

Information session for the French Immersion (FI) program will take place at Joseph A. Gibson P.S.

on January 14, 2016 at 7 p.m in the gym.

FI registration will begin January 15, 2016. Parents or guardians of Senior Kindergarten students entering

Grade 1 in 2016, and wishing to enrol in the FI Program, can visit or call the school office and request

an Office Index Card - short version. The Office Index Card must be signed by the principal of the home

school. Parents or guardians then take this form, along with one piece of identification showing their address

to the designated FI program location to register between January 15 and February 12, 2016. This

eliminates the need to provide duplicate enrollment information or to pre-register.

VALENTINE COOKIE SALES During the week of February 8th, 2016 the Gr. 8 students will be selling Valentine Cookies

at the “Store” in support of their graduation. The cookies are individually wrapped, nut

free and fall within the Healthy Schools guidelines.

If you would like to pre-order your child’s cookie, please fill in the cookie order form which will be handed out to

each student and return it to the office together with your money in an envelope or baggie by February 2nd. The

pre-ordered cookies will be delivered to your child’s classroom on February 11th.
