WHERE ARE WE GOING?!TODAY: Finish Carbon FootprintMOVE ON TO MAPS Friday: Topographic Maps, Quiz 1
Look back at your vocabulary sheet: check off the topics we have covered!
WHAT IS A MAP?• A representation of an area of land or
sea showing physical features, cities, roads, etc.
• Many different types!
DIRECTIONS: YOU SHOULD KNOW THESE!
MAP PROJECTIONS
•Representation of the earth stretched out onto a flat map•Uses mathematical gridlines called latitude and longitude
TYPES OF MAP PROJECTIONS
Interrupted Projection
Mercator Projection
LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE• Used to specify position on a
globe/projection map!
KEY TERMSLATITUDE LONGITUDEEQUATORPRIME MERIDIAN
LATITUDE VS. LONGITUDE• LATITUDE • coordinates that define the north-south position on the
globe• LONGITUDE• coordinates that define the west-east position on the
globe
MAJOR GRIDLINES• EQUATOR • main line of latitude at 0 degrees
• PRIME MERIDIAN • main line of longitude at 0 degrees
HEMISPHERES• Hemi- = half• -sphere = area
• What major lines divide each?
LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE LINES FORM A GRIDThe globe is divided into a grid system.
Latitude – specifies position north/south of the Equator.• Equator = 0 degrees latitude
• + (positive) 1-90 above the Equator• -(negative) -1-90 below the Equator
THOUGHT QUESTION: What latitude is the North Pole? What latitude is the South Pole? How do you know?
Longitude- specifies position east/west of the Prime Meridian.• Prime Meridian = 0 degrees longitude
• + (positive) 1-180 right the Prime Meridian• -(negative) -1-180 left the Prime Meridian
THINK: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A MAP AND A MAP PROJECTION?
Map•Graphic representation of an area; does not necessarily use latitude and longitude grids
Map projection•Map that uses math-supported grids
•All map projections are maps, but not all maps are map projections
Map or map projection?
Map or map projection?
Map or map projection?
RECAP: WHERE IS THE EQUATOR LOCATED?
Do you know the exact coordinates?Have you ever used a GPS?!
DO NOW1. What are lines of longitude also called? Name he line of
longitude that separates the Eastern hemisphere from the Western hemisphere?
2. Describe how chunks of weathered rock (sediment) form a sedimentary rock. In your answer, include pressure, foliated and non-foliated.
3. Using either the globe or your cell phone, record the coordinates for Conway, NC [Check for Understanding Is NC North or South of the Equator? East or West of the Prime Meridian?]
TIME ZONESWhat is a time zone?
Thought Question: Why do time zones exist?
Does the sun RISE and FALL at the same time in all places in the world?
Even today (and especially in ancient times, people measured noon by the position of the Sun directly overhead!)
UNITED STATES TIME ZONESWhat are the 4 major US time zones?• Eastern• Central• Mountain• PacificWhich one we do we live in?
WORLD MAPS• Be able to locate the 7 continents!• The 5 major oceans!• Which ocean is LARGEST?
WEATHER MAPS: ISOTHERMSIsotherm: lines that connect areas of equal
temperaturesIso = equalTherm = temperature (or heat)
WEATHER MAPS: ISOBARSISOBARS: lines that connect areas of equal
pressure
WEATHER MAPS: PRESSURE SYSTEMSHigh Pressure SystemsLow Pressure Systems
Air moves from ______ to ________pressure….
Pressure systems spin:• __________ in the Southern Hemisphere• ________-____________ in the Northern Hemispherehttp://www.bom.gov.au/lam/Students_Teachers/pressure.shtml
QUIZ YOURSELF!Identify areas of:• HIGH PRESSURE• LOW PRESSURE• FRONTS (cold, warm, stationary, occluded)
STATE THE WEATHER THAT IS GOING ON IN different regions of the United States!
http://www.weather.com/maps/maptype/currentweatherusnational/index_large.html
HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEMRegions of SINKING air• Highs • Anti-cyclones• Fair weather and clear skies
http://www.bom.gov.au/lam/Students_Teachers/pressure.shtml
LOW PRESSURE SYSTEMREGIONS of RISING AIR• Cyclones or depressions• Clouds, rain, STRONG winds• WHY? Warm air RISES, COOLS, begins to form CLOUDS!
WATER VAPOR AND WEATHERHow are water vapor and weather related?1. ____________: amount of water vapor in the air compared to
how much water vapor the air can possibly hold.Clouds are made of water vapor that has ______________ to form
droplets.
When those clouds get heavy enough, water falls to the Earth as _______________.
2. _______ ___________: temperature at which water vapor condenses to form droplets (usually in the troposphere).
THOUGHT QUESTION: Why does air temperature dictate how much water vapor the air can hold?
WATER IS AN ENERGY AGENT• Ocean currents move heat from the Equator
towards the Poles• Ocean currents are due to:• Surface – wind• Density – temperature, salinity
BIOME CLIMATESCLIMATE:• Average weather over time (months, years)• Precipitation (and humidity)• Temperature• Let’s look at some graphs that will characterize climates for each
BIOME!
NAME THAT BIOME!• Lowest precipitation next to
the desert!• Coldest temperatures year-
round!
CHALLENGE: NAME ONE MORE FACT ABOUT THAT BIOME (plants, animals, adaptations)
NAME THAT BIOME!CHALLENGE: NAME ONE MORE
FACT ABOUT THAT BIOME (plants, animals, adaptations)

FACT ABOUT THAT BIOME (plants, animals, adaptations)
BIOME SUMMARYCOMPARE/CONTRAST ACTIVITY:• Compare: Desert and Tundra• Contrast: Rainforest and the Temperature Deciduous Forest
