Thousand Candles
William Downie
62Retail Catalogue August 2015
Thousand candles - is taken from a nineteenth century account of the local land that harks back to the country's original indigenous people. A ceremony granting free passage (Freedom of the Bush) to the lands around the property was witnessed by a European settler, who referring to the tribesmen dramatically holding aloft their firesticks, remarked that it was as if the 'twilight of the evening had been interrupted by thousand candles'.

William Downie established his own label in 2003 after several years living and working in Burgundy. His intention is to produce wines of purity and detail that reflect their place of origin. They are made in the most natural way possible, not pushed or shoved in any direction. They are not added to or subtracted from. Although each of the William Downie wines is made from Pinot Noir, the Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula and Gippsland are more different than they are similar.William was the Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine Young Australian Winemaker of The Year for 2006.

Oxford Landing is a real place, a real vineyard. A place distinguished by clear blue skies, rich red soil and an abundance of golden sunshine. Established in 1958 on the banks of the majestic Murray River in South Australia, the vineyard was named Oxford Landing after a nearby site where drovers once grazed and watered sheep on the long journey to Adelaide from northern pastoral properties. Care and attention are the hallmarks of life at Oxford Landing. Many of the people who work here also live here. They're what we like to call 'real people', genuine, down-to-earth individuals who are unshamedly passionate about this special place and the grapes it produces.

Their wine takes its name from Victoria Park, which the first settlers carved out of the rugged Bushlands of Adelaide in South Australia. Named after Princess Victoria before being crowned Queen, the parklands are a part of Colonel William Light’s 1837 vision for the city. A popular place for relaxation and moments with friends, it has become affectionately known as the people’s park.

The Henschke family is one of the longest-established wine names in the Barossa. Established by Johann Christian Henschke in 1861, each generation built upon the reputation for quality. But it was fourth-generation Cyril Alfred Henschke who in 1958 created one of the world's most highly sought after red wine - Hill of Grace. Today, fifth generation Stephen Henschke and his wife Prue uphold the family name and reputation, as winemaker and viticulturist respectively. Henschke is also one of the first producers from Barossa to adopt biodynamic practices in their estates.

The Heggies Vineyard was owned by local grazier and bushman, Colin Heggie, before being purchased by Wyndham Hill Smith, then Manager of the Yalumba Wine Company. Friends since school days, Colin and Wyndham's friendship continued into adulthood and throughout their lengthy negotiation over the purchase of Heggie's land - a negotiation that was not a lot more than an excuse for relaxed chats about land, cattle, horses, wine and life! Planting began in 1971 on the North Eastern corner of the property and the first wine was released in 1979. It was the first wine to bear the idiosyncratic label that features a drawing of Colin Heggie, the bushman, looking out over the fledgling Heggies plantings astride his faithful chestnut, Jack.
With an altitude varying between 485 metres and 500 metres, Pewsey Vale sits 250 metres above the Barossa Valley floor. The cooler temperatures found at this height encourage a longer ripening period which extends well into autumn. This longer ripening period is essential for producing superior quality grapes with exceptional flavour and character - hallmarks of PewseyVale wines.

Jansz's vineyards lie in the Tamar Valley along the Northern Tasmanian route at the heart of Tasmania's Pipers River region, an area known worldwide as "Sparkling Tasmania". With a mantle of red basalt soils and a cool climate moderated by its close proximity to the ocean, it is ideal for the slow ripening of fruit and lingering acidity so essential to the production of premium sparkling wine. In fact, the area's climate so resembled Champagne and Burgundy that several leading French Champagne houses considered basing new operations there.
Located about 20 minutes drive from Hobart, in Tasmania's southeast, the Coal River Valley has established a reputation for growing exceptional quality grapes. In 2006, the Tolpuddle Vineyard won the inaugural Tasmanian Vineyard of the Year award, reflecting the performance of this unique and distinguished site. Under the current owners, Martin Shaw and Michael Hill - Smith, there is a firm commitment to respecting the site, and seeing it become one of Australia's great vineyards for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The vineyard was called Tolpuddle and it took its name from the Tolpuddle Martyrs. The soil is light silica over sandstone, and of moderate vigour, ensuring well-balanced vines.

Dalrymple's celebrated vineyard of just 12.3 hectares and with vines exceeding 20 years, rise up an easterly facing slope from 100m to 160m above sea level. With latitude of 41°, the vineyard shares similar conditions to that found in Burgundy.Tea trees, eucalypts and ferns protect its terroir on all sides, whilst sea breezes from nearby Bass Strait moderate dry and night temperatures, thereby encouraging the grapes to ripen evenly. On the western border of the property lies the extinct volcanic crater which created the vineyard's rich basalt soils. These soils are of a moderate depth and so provide excellent drainage to avoid waterlogging, keeping the vines in relatively good balance.
