A message from our Chair & Executive Director
Dear Friends,
We started 2012 at our Annual Meeting at Fairview Farms Golf Club listening
to Robert Egger, author of Begging for Change, urging us to “do things
better, smarter, faster and cheaper… to not just look for change, but to
demand it.” Today’s issues certainly need us to do so.
Our 2012 Annual Report to the Community is a compilation of doing things
better and seeking that change. As a United Way, we continue to strive to
provide necessary safety net services to our friends and neighbors in
Northwest Connecticut, while seeking longer term community solutions for
today’s more complex issues around income, education and health.

everything we do is about our future.” The

paign including at the Final Night event!
“On behalf of the entire campaign team,

west Connecticut communities who gave to

Every year, more than one million students drop out of high school. As a result, fewer young Americans are likely to earn a diploma than
their parents, a distinction not shared by any other industrialized country.

Citizen’s Review Message—Paul Rougeot
I want to thank all the members
of the Citizen’s Review Panels
who made the process flow
smoothly. They play a critical
role in the United Way relationship with its
member agencies. Deciding how to distrib-
ute the funds raised through the annual cam-
paign is a huge responsibility, and it’s a won-
derful volunteer experience for those in-
volved! The panels were chaired by Dwain
United Way is working to ensure that children and youth are: 1.) ready for school, starting with the skills they need to succeed; 2.) read-
ing on track by fourth grade; 3.) transitioning successfully to and from middle school; and 4.) graduating high school on time.
Snow, Alcoa Howmet; Barbara Randall, retired
from Bank of America; Gail Olsen, Ducci Kitch-

Bank. Each year, the agencies submit their
requests to the United Way for money needed
for programs and services to help support the
needs of our Northwest Connecticut commu-
nity. With a stagnant economy, the needs
continue to increase. I’m proud to be a part of
this process and greatly appreciate the dedica-
tion of our volunteers!
hard to keep our funding to our partner

We have begun the process of studying our
campaign and trying to communicate more
with the companies and individuals who
support us year after year. The Board feels this
can only positively impact our bottom line,
which will allow us to impact our Northwest
Connecticut communities in a greater way.
As always, a complete copy of our audited
financial statements, including Form 990, are
available in our office for review during regular
business hours.

“In any community, education, income and health
are the building blocks for opportunity—
individually and collectively. Education is essential
to getting and keeping a job with a wage that can
sustain a family and has health benefits. An
income that can cover today and save for
tomorrow builds a family’s solid foundation. Good
health helps children stay on track at school and
adults be productive at work. Remove any of
these building blocks and the other two topple.
Build them up and you have a cornerstone for
individual and community prosperity.”

Robert Egger,
author of Begging
for Change,
addressed the
UWNWCT’s annual
meeting at Fairview
Farms Golf Club.
The 9th annual Food For Your Neighbors
food drive kicked off at the annual
meeting. Since its inception, the UW has
been able to collect over 196,000 food
items for those in need in Northwest
Connecticut.
The annual volunteer led Citizen’s Review
process to allocate dollars raised during
the campaign was completed.
In one of many collaborations throughout
2012, our Executive Director participated
in the NW CT Chamber’s Read Aloud Day.
Stephanie Barksdale, Executive Director of
UWNWCT, participated in a pilot
homelessness simulation conducted
through the Western CT Mental Health
Network. This simulation was to go
statewide in 2012.

Together is a
community
collaborative effort with the Northwestern
Connecticut Y, Charlotte Hungerford
Hospital and United Way among many
other partners. Fit Together’s mission is to
help our Northwest CT communities
become the healthiest in Connecticut.
We can’t get the word out about the good
we do in our northwest CT communities
without participating in expos and trade
shows through both the Tri-State Chamber
Trade Festival and the Northwest CT
Chambers’ Business Expo. We also rely on
the generosity of our local media outlets
including WZBG, WAPJ, the Republican
American and the Register Citizen.
United Way participated with the
Northwest CT Economic Development
Corporation at a strategy session for the
comprehensive economic development
plan.

Derby was
held at
Fuessenich
Park in Torrington. This annual fundraising
event helps to raise money towards the
Glenn Winn Jr. Campership fund. Since
the inception of the Glenn Winn Jr.
Campership Fund over 1,000 children have
been able to participate in a summer
camp program.
Final editing of the
annual campaign video
occurred in July with
JoAnn Ryan and Angela

chairs) introducing the
Flash Mob to the
Northwest corner of
Connecticut!
UWNWCT participated in a statewide
meeting of Early Grade Reading programs
including other United Ways, school
districts, and literacy volunteer programs.
Students who are not reading at grade
level by third grade are four times more
likely to drop out of school.
UWNWCT personnel volunteered with
hundreds of others at the Torrington Early
Childhood Collaboratives Annual Dress for
Success program at the Armory.
The Women’s Leadership Initiative was
born for UWNWCT under the capable
guidance of Gail Olsen, a member of the
UWNWCT Board of Directors. A late spring
2013 event is planned to raise funds for
future leadership programming.
Volunteers for UWNWCT were invited to
an appreciation picnic at the Elks Pond.
About 20 volunteers came out on a bright,
sunny day for hamburgers, hot dogs and
salads! Of course, we appreciate all our
volunteers!
UWNWCT hosted an author talk and
leadership event in conjunction with Geer
Village. Jane Maas, author of Mad
Women: The Other Side of Madison
Avenue in the 60’s and Beyond presented
her perspective on the difference between
Mad Women and Mad Men in the
advertising industry.

early spring reception at Ducci Kitchens in
Goshen. Gail and Charles Olsen sponsored
the evening with the assistance of
representatives from Viking Appliances,
who showed how well the kitchens work
when you know how to cook!
United Way participated with the
Litchfield County Women’s Network on
their 20th anniversary Daughters Day
event. This event is designed to help girls
know they can be whatever their hearts
desire!
United Way supported the child care
agencies in their work through the Day of
the Child held in Canaan.
United Way made a presentation to the
Litchfield Area Business Association (LABA)
on its purpose and mission.
In May, the United Way Executive
Director, Board Chair, and Board First Vice
Chair attended the Community Leaders
Conference (CLC) in Nashville through
invitation of United Way Worldwide. The
CLC is a biennial event which includes
training for staff and volunteers.
The United Way’s annual
golf outing was held in
May at the Torrington
Country Club with just
under 100 golfers
participating. Events like the golf outing
offer different giving options for people
who may not wish to contribute through
their workplace.
United Way participated in the Northwest
CT Chamber’s annual Reality Fair, which
helps high school students get a better
handle on how to manage their money.
United Way of
Northwest
Connecticut, in
conjunction with
other Connecticut
United Ways, hosted an Education Summit
at the end of June. We all recognize that
early education initiatives are critical for a
child’s success in school. Numerous
studies (including the Federal Reserve
Bank, MIT, and RAND) have documented
the return on investment for every dollar
spent on early grade learning—ranging
from $1.80 to $17.07.
UWNWCT has been selected to become
part of the national Campaign for Grade
Level Reading. Reading proficiency by
third grade is the most important
predictor of high school graduation and
career success.

UWNWCT joined a collaborative effort to
form a homeless drop-in shelter. The hope
would be that people leaving the
overnight shelter would have a place to go
for services required including counseling,
job searching, and peer support.
Chuck Loring, a nationally renowned
fundraising consultant, made a
presentation to the Board about trends in
fundraising.
In a collaborative effort,
UWNWCT personnel
participated in a three day
workshop with prominent
planning consultant Mark
Fenton on how to create a
more healthy Northwest CT. This is part of
the Fit Together initiative which UWNWCT
continues to support.
The new Third Thursday Lunch series was
launched. This first in the series began
with a review of the United Way
Worldwide required self-assessment.
UWNWCT was pleased to receive a grant
from the Union Savings Bank Foundation
for a pilot program for Graduation
Coaches in the Torrington/Winsted
schools. With sizeable high school drop
out rates, the hope of the grant was to
match a mentor with an at-risk student to
keep them in school.
Presentations of United Way services
were made to the Northwest CT Chamber
of Commerce leadership group and the
Charlotte Hungerford Hospital behavioral
support group.
The first ever Murder Mystery fundraiser
was organized for the United Way
parenting program by Fran Chapell,
director of the
Canaan Child
Care Center. All
funds went
directly to the
parenting
program.
UWNWCT personnel participated in many
minglers and open houses during the
holiday seasons. Our Executive Director
took the opportunity to meet with the
newly hired CEO of Girl Scouts of
Connecticut Mary Barneby during a meet
and greet held at the Torrington Girl
Scouts office.
UWNWCT established itself as a drop off
point of Teddy Bears for Operation Fuzzy
Wuzzy after the sad and tragic shooting of
20 first graders, and 6 teachers and
administrators in Sandy Hook, CT.
Hundreds of stuffed animals were
collected. While we were pleased to be
able to play some small part in trying to
make a difference for those impacted by
this terrible event, we know
our contributions could
never replace the losses
experienced. Our thoughts
and prayers continue to go
to the families of Sandy
Hook.
