1 Dear Students, Parents, and Staff, On behalf of the Walt Whitman PTSA, we would like to invite you to be a part of the annual Clubs Night. Throughout the year, many people work ceaselessly to bring the best High School experience to you through iconic events such as Homecoming, Red Rush 5k, bRave, Mr. Whitman, Battle of the Classes, and many more. This being said, the one thing that makes all of the work behind these events worthwhile is the active support and participation of the student body and beyond. And that starts with you. At Whitman, we pride ourselves with academic excellence, being one of the top schools in the nation. In having such a strong reputation, students at Whitman may find themselves focusing more time on academics than anything else. To be a part of our community and truly experience the unbelievable opportunities Whitman has to offer, Clubs Night is the place to begin. As the homecoming hype swoops in like a superhero, and the football games inspire you to be a star athlete, Clubs Night will give everyone an inside look into what makes Whitman one of the best schools in the nation. Whether it be the Robotics Club, Asian Hop-Hop Club, Entrepreneurs Club, or “Caked,” every club is driven by school spirit and a love for the community. Being involved is what shapes you as a person. It’s what gives you character, motivation, and experience to impact the world that lies ahead of us. Not only this, but you’ll have fun doing it! And it all starts with you. At Clubs Night, you will get an opportunity to ask the leaders of these clubs about what they do throughout the year, as well as how you can be involved. It’s a fantastic opportunity to meet new people, form new friendships, and be involved!

Many people contributed to the success of Clubs Night. Special thanks go to the following people: Dr. Goodwin, Ms. Gardiner and Ms. Cook for helping with the arrangements; all the teachers, staff and parents who lend their time to these clubs; all the parents who served on the Clubs Night Committee; Alisha Dhir for creating the Clubs Night brochure cover art, and the building staff for their help before and after the event. Finally, of course, thanks to all the students whose enthusiasm and hard work make these clubs possible!

A few notes about the club descriptions that follow:

* Prerequisites: Unless stated, there are none.

* Cost: Prior to participation in any club or activity listed herein, students must have paid the extracurricular activity fee to the Montgomery County Public School system. If you have not yet paid the fee, you may pick up a form in the main office or call 301-517-5000 to obtain one.

* Extra Cost: Unless stated, there is no additional cost other than the above- mentioned activity fee.

* Service Learning Hours: Student Service Learning (SSL) hours may be earned through participation in school-sponsored clubs and organizations that include activities with a service focus. Members of any club can talk with their advisor and apply for SSL approval with Mrs. Geisler, SSL Coordinator, in Room A-119. Club advisors are responsible for covering the SSL phases of preparation, action and reflection. Questions from club advisors regarding any aspect of earning SSL hours with school-sponsored clubs and organizations should be posed to Mrs. Geisler in advance of any activity for which SSL hours are desired. SSL hours will only be awarded after approval has been given by Mrs. Geisler. A list of clubs that have already been approved for SSL activities is included on the Whitman SSL web site at www.mcps.k12.md.us/schools/whitmanhs/ssl and posted on the bulletin board in Room A-119. Only work done outside of the school day will be approved, and there is a maximum of 8 hours a day that can be earned. Before the end of the semester when the service was performed, each student should submit MCPS Form 560-51, Student Service Learning Activity Verification, to Mrs. Geisler.

* Liability/Waiver: Whitman High School, MCPS and the Whitman PTSA are not responsible for any injury that may result from participation in these clubs. A signed medical waiver (included in this booklet and available from the club sponsors) is required for some clubs, as stated. Some clubs might require the signed medical waiver even though it is not listed as such in this brochure.
