The three unsung Detroit heroes share their stories about their influence on history and the impact it made in their personal lives. In 1945, Sara Elizabeth Haskell became known as the Rosa Parks of the Boblo Boat; Duane Gerlach staged blackface minstrel shows for more than 10 years in a Detroit suburb, and Dave Moore was the last survivor of the Ford Hunger March and related his experiences during the Great Depression. The Village The-ater at Cherry Hill presents Wax in the D, an exhibition of 40 works of encaus-tic art by 15 Detroit-area artists curated by visual artist Can-dace Law. This exhi-bition of an unusual art medium will run through Febru-ary 28 and is free for the public.“In its simplest

form, encaustic is a combination of beeswax, a little damar resin, and pigment,” curator of the exhibit, Can-dace Law explained. “The mixture is brought to a molten state and applied with a brush to a rigid surface while still liquid. Once it's cooled, this top surface is reheated so the wax melts into the layers be-neath. It's this lay-ering that gives an encaustic piece its unique depth and luminosity, as well as allowing for in-terleaving other materials that make it so versatile.”To see encaustic

art by the exhibit's 15 wax-medium, and other, artists, go online to: Waxin-theD.com. For more information, call (734) 394-5300.The Wax in the D

exhibition, featur-ing over 40 works, will be on display at The Village Theater at Cherry Hill, locat-ed at 50400 Cherry Hill Rd, in Canton.

SYMPHONIC NEWS

The MozartFest of the De-troit Symphony Orchestra has been very successful this year. Slatkin has been utilizing a smaller orches-tra, which is consistent with the customary size during Mozart’s period. This also allows the effect to be more of a chamber concert – with clarity of the different roles and ability for the individual instru-ments to excel. This past week has been

remarkable in the manner of presentation of individu-al pieces. I enjoyed the per-formance of the two violin Concertone with Kimberly Kaloyanides Kennedy and Hai-Xin Wu, violins. This is not among Mozart’s better known works, but its sense of intimacy is captivating.Horn performer Johanna Yarbrough (pictured), pro-vided a very delicate and warm rendition of the third horn concerto and Ralph Skiano’s rendition of the clarinet concerto seemed to turn on the entire audi-ence at Orchestra Hall. This performance could only be considered of a similar ex-ceptional level as that of Robert Williams in the Mo-zart bassoon concerto. We are heading towards

the final stretch of the Mozart Festival, starting on February 2, Thursday, at 7:30 p.m. and Febru-ary 3, Friday, 10:45 a.m. with Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (some people might remember it used as the signal for Misha Rachlevsky’s Nightcap with Mozart), Symphony No. 35, 'Haffner,' Overture to The Abduction from the Seraglio, and Symphony No. 36, 'Linz.'

On Friday, February 3 at 8 p.m., and Saturday, Feb-ruary 4 at 8 p.m. Sharon Sparrow, flute and Yolanda Kondonassis, harp will be performing as soloists in Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp. Additionally, the program includes Sym-phony No. 38, 'Prague,' and Symphony No. 41, 'Jupiter.'In addition to the pro-

grams mentioned with the Detroit Symphony Orches-tra, on Sunday, February 5 at 2 p.m., the Detroit Sym-phony Youth Orchestra will be partnering with the University Choir from the University of Michigan School of Music to present Mozart’s Requiem. A pre-concert talk will

take place at 1 p.m. Among my few reservations: Not even one of Mozart’s 27 piano concerti has been presented in this festival. While only a small drop of Mozart’s ocean of output can be touched in any such series of events, the piano repertoire is too significant

to be completely ignored.Kerrytown Concert House

in Ann Arbor will be pre-senting light classical mu-sic programs during this coming weekend (singing) as well as next weekend (Peter Soave, bandolero, together with the Detroit Chamber Winds). For more information, see

kerrytownhouse.org. This past Sunday, I spent

a very nice afternoon at Marygrove College togeth-er with the Chamber Music at Scarab Club. The pro-gram featured a sonata for cello and piano by Paul La-Combe, and works that fea-tured percussion instru-ments. This was unique because of the quality of the music. On Sunday, March 5, at 7

p.m. at the Scarab Club in Detroit, Velda Kelly - vio-lin, Nadine Deleury, cello will perform together with Flutist Carrie Wiesinger, and guitarist Eladio Schar-rón. For more information, call (248) 474-8930. On Saturday of next week-

end, February 11, at 6:30 p.m. there is a fundrais-ing party being presented by the Rackham Sympho-ny Choir. The event will take place at The Mirage, 16980 18 Mile Road, Clinton Township, and includes auction items, a $2,500 raffle grand prize and Shinola Watch (2nd Prize), a red-carpet en-trance, live entertainment featuring circus artists and more! This special event includes a strolling dinner and open bar and should be a very pleasant event for renewing social and musical connections with friends.

Foot Health Today

DR. JAMES SCHELBERG

FOOT CARE FOR DIABETICS QUESTION: I have heard that diabetics have special problems with their feet. Why is this? ANSWER: Circulation in the diabetic foot is often impaired and this can lead to a number of problems. For one thing, the diabetic foot has a reduced ability to fight off infection and disease. A simple cut or sore, if unnoticed or neglected, may develop into a very serious condition. The Podiatrist can monitor

circulation by checking your foot and leg for signs of impending problems. In addition, since decreased sensitivity of nerves can hide minor foot injuries, the podiatrist can check for these in order to prevent serious damage.

Learn All About the Birds and the Bees at Belle Isle Nature Center The Belle Isle Nature Center will host free family-friendly

Valentine’s celebration on Saturday, February 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Birds and the Bees will feature music, photogra-phy, crafts, zookeeper talks and other educational activities.

“This G-rated celebration will show some love for our winged friends that are so important to the environment,” said Amy Greene, curator of education for the Detroit Zoological Society.

Musical performances by singer, songwriter and earth edu-cator Joe Reilly will complement an art exhibition featuring works by bee photographer Joseph Ferraro as well as students from Dearborn’s Salina Intermediate School. Valentine’s-themed crafts will include “bee mine” cards and heart-shaped birdseed cakes for children to feed to the birds in their own backyards.

Guests will have the opportunity to learn more about the Detroit Audubon Society and the U.S. Forest Service, as well as the danger that large windows pose to birds. Templates for window decals to help pro-tect birds will be available to make and take home.

Zookeeper talks will highlight the courting and nesting behaviors of birds and the life cycle and com-municative dance moves of bees. These talks will be held at the Nature Center’s bird observation win-dow – which allows guests to watch native and migratory birds feed on natural and supplemental food sources – and the observation beehive. Sealed tightly within a double-sided glass case and tunnel, the hive provides bees with year-round access to the outdoors and provides guests an up-close glimpse into their busy daily lives. A jar of natural honey produced by these bees will be raffled off during the event along with a bird feeder.

The Belle Isle Nature Center sits on a 5-acre site surrounded by undisturbed forested wetlands located at the east end of Belle Isle near the Blue Heron Lagoon. The facility features indoor animal habitats, a bee exhibit, bird observation window, outdoor native butterfly garden, outdoor classrooms, nature play area and the Blue Heron Lagoon nature trail.

Admission to the Nature Center is free; a State of Michigan Recreation Passport is required for all per-sonal vehicles to enter Belle Isle State Park. For information, see belleislenaturecenter.org.

The annual Shiver on the River takes place this Saturday, February 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (some activities end after 3 p.m.) on Belle Isle in Downtown Detroit. The Shiver is held on the first Saturday in February every year and is hosted by the Friends of the Detroit River. The family oriented event is designed to educate participants about the importance of effective stewardship of the river. The

event is based at the historic Belle Isle Casino and involves most of the venues on the island, including the Nature Zoo, the Dossin Museum, the Detroit Yacht Club, the Detroit Boat Club and the U.S. Coast Guard Station. There will be environmental displays and children's activities at the Casino, an ice rescue (weather permitting) demonstration by the Coast Guard and other attractions at the various island sites.

This event offers a great opportunity to get outside during winter and discover t h e m a n y w o n d e r f u l attractions on Belle Isle, the largest city-owned park in the United States. Of significant interest is the fact that Belle Isle’s original landscaping was executed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the Dean of Landscape Architects, and the creator of New York City’s Central Park, and Montreal’s Mount Royal, among numerous others.Admission to the Shiver

LIVE THEATRE

By Marian Sakalauskas

Hilberry's 'Next to Normal'

Unique Apts. in Palmer Park - 1 & 2 bedrooms and Penthouses. Includes free parking. 1 bedrms. $800 mo., 2 bedrms. $900 mo., Penthouses $1500 mo.

Call (313) 897-1823 or (313) 897-5656.

It is not often that musical theatre deals with the subject of mental illness and bipolar disorder in particular. But the current offering at Wayne State’s Hilberry Theatre, Next to Normal, takes us into the life of a suburban mother afflicted with the condition and her family.

The rock musical, which won both a Tony Award and a Pulitzer Prize, takes off the rose-colored glasses and gives audiences a glimpse of the suffering that mental illness can bring to the entire family.

Diana (Devri Chism) is a suburban housewife whose bipolar disorder, trig-gered by a family tragedy, was diagnosed sixteen years ago. She dreams of the perfect family life but realizes that she has delusions and struggles to cope with her mere existence. She laments, “We know it’s not perfect, but it’s all we’ve got.”

Diana’s husband Dan (Kyle Mitchell Johnson) is heart-breakingly loyal to his wife. He remembers when she was twenty, brilliant and bold. In his song Who’s Crazy he asks, “Who’s crazy? The one who can’t cope or the one who hopes?” It's a valid question. He does keep hoping that something will help his wife, be it pharmaceuticals, talk therapy, or electro convulsive treat-

ments.Their sixteen-year-old

daughter Natalie (Wesley Cady) is an over-achieving and disgruntled high school student. She wonders aloud whether in other families they really love each other or just fake it. She feels invisible in her home and seeks refuge in the practice room at the school where she works on a Mozart piece for a recital.

While Natalie is practicing, a fellow student, Henry (James Kern), enters to listen to her play. He is obvi-ously interested in Natalie, although she can’t see why. He enjoys listening to her but thinks the classical music she plays is too structured and doesn’t allow for improvisation and interpretation. Eventually, their relationship blooms and he declares his love for her in a lovely song Perfect for You.

Son Gabe (Brandon A. Wright), seems to haunt the entire family. He is always there for Diana, but Natalie rages that he is just the perfect

son who makes her feel invisible, especially to her mother.Because of the seriousness of her condition, Diana sees several doctors,

all of them played by Cody Robinson. The first doctor gives her innumerable pharmaceuticals to help her, and when she finally complains that she feels nothing, he pronounces her stable. Her song, I Miss the Mountains, is a cry for the peaks and valleys she longs to experience. Then she tries talk therapy, which makes some progress but still leaves her delusional. When they go to electroconvulsive therapy, she is left with huge gaps in her memory. She needs to go back to the experience which triggered the whole descent into illness and deal with it head on.

At the end, Diana realizes that you don’t have to be happy to be happy to be alive.

This is, in fact, a musical and the music is excellent. It won a Tony Award in 2009 for Best Original Score and Best Orchestration. The five-piece band is located above and behind the set and is ever present but not at all obtrusive. If we are willing to accept the convention of the music, the music enhances both the story and the emotions in this production.

The set is quite minimal but very effective. It is a multi-level unit set with set pieces which can be rolled out as necessary for the various scenes. This helps the action flow smoothly from one area to another.

Next to Normal runs at the Hilberry until February 12. For tickets and more information, call 313-577-2972 or contact www.hilberry.com.

The Hilberry Theatre is located at 4743 Cass Avenue, in Detroit's Midtown.

THE SPORTING LIFE

By George B. EichornUM/NE's QB T.B. in SB LI

It’s here – the biggest sporting event on the planet occurs Sunday, February 5 as the New England Patriots play the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI.Quarterback Tom Brady, a University of Michigan product, seeks a record

fifth Super Bowl ring as he leads his perennial favored Patriots – champions of the AFC - against Matt Ryan and the hard-charging NFC champion Atlanta Falcons, in search of their first championship ever.It shapes up to be an exciting game, starting at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the re-

tractable-roof NRG Stadium in Houston. This is the second time that this stadium has hosted the Big Game. Gates open at 2 p.m. for the sellout crowd. Tailgating (via permit only) will begin hours before that as fans fire up their

grills in eager anticipation of the matchup.FOX Sports (Channel 2 lo-

cally) has the telecast with Joe Buck and Troy Aik-man on play-by-play and sideline reports from Erin Andrews and Chris My-ers. Westwood One has the radio account as heard on WXYT-FM 97.1 ‘The Ticket,’ with Kevin Harlan and Boomer Esiason in the booth. Of note: a 30-second

TV commercial will cost a cool $5.02 million. Snickers candy bar has an-nounced that for the first time in the event’s 51-year TV history, a live com-mercial is being aired.Leading the crew of eight officials will be referee Carl Cheffers, in his first

Super Bowl assignment. Lady Gaga is the halftime entertainment while Luke Bryan performs the national anthem. A 10,000-person volunteer team was needed by the Houston Super Bowl Host Committee to pull off this extrava-ganza.The Falcons have not appeared in the championship game since 1999 when

they lost Super Bowl XXXIII to the Denver Broncos. They got here by defeat-ing the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers. Under second-year head coach Dan Quinn the team finished with an impressive 11-5 season record and as the No. 2 seed in the National Conference. This is a very offensive-minded team featuring nine-year veteran Ryan who made his fourth Pro Bowl squad.Julio Jones was Ryan’s favorite target during the regular season, netting

1,409 receiving yards on 83 catches and six touchdowns. He has two other targets in Mohamed Sanu and Taylor Gabriel. Devonta Freeman is a Pro Bowl running back with 1,078 yards, 11 TDs and a 4.8 yards-per-carry. All-pro placekicker Matt Bryant is one of the best in the league.Atlanta’s fans are hungry for a title yet the odds makers favor the Pats (14-

2) who are led by 39-year-old Brady, suspended for four games at the start of the 2016 season for the “Deflategate” scandal. They were the No. 1 seed in the AFC and defeated the Houston Texans and Pittsburgh Steelers to punch their Super Bowl ticket.Coach Bill Belichick will set a record with his seventh head coaching ap-

pearance (tied at six with Don Shula). With this Super Bowl, New England will post a record ninth appearance.Did you know that the Pats have recorded at least 12 wins in every year

of the 2010’s decade? It’s an amazing streak and a model franchise for all of professional sports. They allowed the fewest points in the league (250) and scored the third-most (441). And they did it since mid-season without all-pro tight end Rob Gronkowski. No-names like Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan and Martellus Bennett caught Brady passes. The ground attack is led by LeGarrette Blount with 1,168 yards and an NFL-

best 18 TDs. Tackle Trey Flowers anchors the defensive line and recorded seven sacks in 2016. Prediction: Patriots 37 - Falcons 30. Reach him at [email protected]
