IntroductionThe manufacturing sector is rapidly progressing toward a digital future. Not because new digital technologies are emerging. And more established digital technologies, which have the potential to transform manufacturing operations, are maturing. But because of the fundamental changes in the markets they serve, and across the environments within which they operate.

In an increasingly global and digitally connected world, consumers have a greater freedom of choice, greater access to information and a greater influence on other consumers. The transformations brought about by social media, online price comparison, rating and review services, along with E-Commerce, ‘bricks vs clicks’, global sales and distribution networks are beyond disruptive. It has up-ended the balance of power, with the consumer (both B2B and B2C consumers) firmly in the driving seat. Not only do today’s consumers demand better, faster and cheaper goods and services, they have the power to coral entire markets into delivering it. No longer can the big global brands rely solely on scale and momentum. As smaller manufacturers gain access to new market opportunities, all businesses must remain agile and competitive in order to remain relevant to today’s consumer.

The environment in which manufacturers operate is also becoming increasingly disruptive. Geo-political policies and trends are making supply chains more volatile (such as with Brexit). Labour migration policies, as well as emerging and maturing economies, are impacting on the availability and cost of labour. Governments and citizens are becoming increasingly concerned around corporate, social, and environmental issues – such as sustainability, climate change, resource waste and even corporate capitalism. This is simply forcing all manufacturers to become more responsible and more transparent across their entire supply chain operations. If not by regulation and legislation, by consumer pressure brought about by naming and shaming brands that do not live up to their expectations. And of course, by their purchasing choices.

From Automation to Optimization

These trends are fundamental and cannot be ignored by any manufacturer. While the last several decades have largely focused on industrial and supply chain automation – the focus over the next several decades will be on manufacturing optimization. Most manufacturers have become much more efficient through the widespread use of automation technologies and techniques. Further investment in automation alone continues to bring smaller and smaller gains in productivity and efficiency, as most of the low hanging fruit from automation has already been harvested. Yet automation should not be confused with optimization. Simply automating an inefficient process will still be inefficient, just not quite as inefficient.

Instead, manufacturing optimization is about balancing the three core pillars of minimizing cost, maximizing value and mitigating risk across the entire manufacturing process and supply chain.

The Opportunity for Manufacturing Consultancies

This focus on manufacturing optimization, in the most part, is what’s behind the drive towards digitalizing manufacturing processes and supply chains ̶ commonly referred to as Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing. But it is not solely technology which provides the silver bullet.

While technology plays a critically important role, where the real value is realised, is in how that technology is utilised. As a result, manufacturers are increasingly turning to external expertise to help drive the adoption of new digital technologies and to help to analyse and re-engineer manufacturing and quality processes across the supply chain. All of this, in order to achieve the new levels of manufacturing optimization that is needed to drive future growth and success.

The Importance of Data and InsightWhat is foundational to all of these approaches is data. And importantly, the insight that is gained from that data; and how in turn, those insights are used to drive operational transformation.

At InfinityQS, this is what we call the Excellence Loop:

Enterprise VisibilityEnterprise-wide data collection and access to real-time data across manufacturing and quality processes stored in a standardized and centralized repository.

Operational InsightReal-time access to data analytics, intelligence and visualization across dimensions such as processes, plants, products or personnel.

Global TransformationPrioritize and target process and quality improvement initiatives as well as monitor performance improvements and results.

From a manufacturing consultancy perspective, when engaging with clients on improvement programs, these data and analytics foundations often do not already exist. And if they do, they are often based around manual data collection and where data is held in siloed and disparate sources. Attempting to work with clients on improvement initiatives, with the absence of data, is a major impediment to success. It is one of the primary challenges that needs to be overcome first, but which can consume significant resource and time.
