ANDRITZAndritz AG has a long tradition as a machine and plant construction company. It was founded in 1852 by the Hungarian entrepreneur Josef Körösi as a foundry and machine works. Within a couple of years the product range had been extended to include large capital goods such as cranes, pumps and water turbines, later also bridges, steam vessels, steam engines and mining equipment. Ten years after its foundation, the Andritz machine works employed as many as 600 people; this figure rose to 1,300 in the 1870’s.

Today the Andritz Group is a global market leader for customized plants, systems and services for hydropower, pulp and paper, steel and other specialized industries (solid/liquid separation, feed and biofuel). The Group is headquartered in Graz, Austria and has a staff of over 13,000 employees worldwide. It develops and makes its high-tech systems at production, service and sales sites all around the world.

The overall strategic goal of the Andritz Group is to be a globally leading supplier of customized plants, process technologies, and services with full-line capabilities in all of its business areas. All strategic measures and decisions are focused on the continuation of profitable growth.

During the last decade, sales of the Andritz Group have grown by an average of approximately 17% per year. This growth has been predominantly based on strong organic expansion supported by market growth and product innovation, as well as the successful acquisition of companies with complementary products, technologies, and services.

Business AreasHydro is a global supplier of turnkey electromechanical equipment and services for hydro power plants; the product range also covers pumps for the pulp and paper industries, and space technology components (e.g. for the European ARIANE rocket launcher program).

Pulp & Paper is the largest business area. It provides technology and services that enable the industry to produce practically all grades of pulp for the manufacture of paper, board and fibreboard, and also specialized machines for tissue production and biomass boilers for power generation.

Environment & Process covers a comprehensive range of technologies, products and services for mechanical and thermal solid/liquid separation for municipalities and major industries including mining and steel.

Feed & Biofuel supplies systems and machines for industrial production of conventional mixed animal feed and high-quality, special animal feed. In addition, the Business Area holds a leading position in equipment for wood pelleting.

Metals develops, manufactures and installs plants for the production of cold-rolled and hot-rolled, surface-finished carbon steel, high-grade steel and non-ferrous metal strip. This includes plants for the regeneration of pickling acids and for metal oxides. In addition, the Business Area builds plants for punching and metal forming.

Andritz in 2nd Generation BiofuelsThe increasing cost of crude oil and dependence on foreign imports, as well as an increasing awareness of the environmental impact of fossil fuels, is the driving force behind the search for alternative fuels. Some governments are offering significant funding to develop commercial facilities for producing biofuels. Major efforts are underway to shift from grain ethanol towards bioethanol produced from cellulosic feedstocks (second generation ethanol).

As the battle against climate change and high oil prices become significant issues Andritz has become increasingly active in the promising 2nd generation liquid biofuel industry.

In May 2007, UPM, Carbona and Andritz announced their cooperation on the development of technology for biomass gasification and synthetic

gas purification. The cooperation also covers the design and supply of a commercial-scale biomass gasification plant.

In the 2nd generation biofuel development, Andritz utilizes its extensive knowledge of biomass processing. The production of ethanol from cellulose requires systems to pre-treat the fibers – raw material handling, pressurized reactors, hydrolyzers, and reactor discharge devices. Typical systems consist of equipment already offered by Andritz in the pulp and paper industry: feedstock storage bins; pressure feeders and sealing devices such as plug feeders, MSD Impressafiners, rotary valves and pressurized reactors.

In the pulp and paper industry Andritz has the technology to offer solutions for integrated processes from wood processing to final product. In the cellulosic ethanol industry, Andritz has equipment and process knowledge in the areas described above, but the product portfolio also includes systems for liquid-solid separation using screw presses, belt filters and centrifuges, as well as systems for biomass drying and pelletizing.

Of particular note, Andritz now offers Bubbling Fluidized Bed boilers for different biomass fuels to the pulp, paper, and power industries.

Corporate Culture:The Andritz Group is a diverse corporation made up of a conglomerate of many acquisitions. Top management is based in Austria and is generally conservative with an eye toward continually expanding Adritz’s profitability.

The Pulp, Paper, Fiber and Chemicals Group prides itself on an open atmosphere of well thought out discussion and debate. This group works informally and they do not depend on frequent review meetings to reach goals. Each team member is expected to be self-motivated and able to work with a great deal of independence. There is a true family spirit in this group and people look out for one another. They have a golf league, frequent cook-outs and regular office parties. Members of the group serve on various charitable boards including United Way and Big Brothers and Big Sisters of America.
