Guidelines for submission of editorial/news copy

Manufacturers’ Mart welcomes submissions of articles and product releases geared to manufacturing and production. The deadline for submitting articles is the 20th of the month prior to the publication date for a particular issue. For successful placement, an article should be relevant to the editorial focus of the issue for which it is submitted. For example, an article about an environmentally friendly parts washer should be submitted by April 20 for publication in our May issue, the focus of which is environmental, health and safety. Please check our editorial calendar to find out which issue best suits your article. Submitted material will be used at the discretion of the editor on a space-available basis, with priority given to advertising clientele.

Ideally, product releases should be between 250-350 words. Please include a photo if possible. Photos should be no less than 150 dpi and no more than 300 dpi. Due to limited server space, submissions received via email that exceed 2 MB will be automatically deleted. Please submit complete contact information for the company whose product is being described, including address, phone number, e-mail and web site url.

In addition to product releases, Manufacturers’ Mart accepts case studies that describe how a company made use of a particular product or technology to solve a problem or improve a process. Case studies should be between 500-800 words, with or without photo.

Manufacturers’ Mart is always eager to publish feature stories of 1000-1500 words that are in keeping with the editorial focus for that particular issue. Feature stories should present general information about a particular technology, industry trend or application of interest to manufacturers. Features are a good way to demonstrate your expertise in a particular area, and often generate inquiries. Please consult our editorial calendar to determine which issue best suits your submission. Manufacturers’ Mart is unable to compensate authors for any submitted material.

Each month, Manufacturers’ Mart publishes a calendar of events of interest to manufacturers. These listings are free of charge and are a good way to promote your meetings, seminars, workshops, and trade shows. For best results, please submit your information as far in advance of the event as possible. You are encouraged to include a promotional press release with your calendar listing for consideration as a “featured event”.

A new white paper that outlines key considerations for selecting the optimal vacuum inlet or exhaust trap and trap-ping con guration for any pump appli-cation, in order to extend system uptime, is be-ing offered by MV Products, a Division of Mass-Vac, Inc. of North Billerica, MA.

The white pa-per, entitled Practi-cal Considerations for Selecting an Inlet or Exhaust Trap for a Vac-uum System , describes the importance of carefully se-lecting the proper trap relative to the process, illustrates and describes common trapping methods, process and design considerations, and guidelines for cost-bene t tradeoffs relative to ef ciency and maintenance intervals.

Vacuum Inlet or Exhaust Trap White Paper Cites Considerations for Selection

Pointing out how costly improper inlet or exhaust trap selection can be, the Practical Considerations white paper from Mass-Vac, Inc. describes how to avoid vacuum pump failures due to process contaminants,

avoid clogging exhaust lines and scrubbers,

how to keep the process cham-

ber free of pump contaminants, and maximize operat-

ing time between scheduled mainte-nance.

Practical Con-siderations for Select-

ing an Inlet or Exhaust Trap is available for download at www.

A new tool that eliminates knives and box cutters for rap-idly and safely removing cable ties from wire harnesses without damaging the insulation, has been introduced by ACT Fastening Solutions of Gardner, MA.

The ACT Cable Tie Removal Tool features a proprietary cut-ting head de-sign which has smooth, curved tips that slip be-hind a cable tie to pull it away from the wire harness and si-multaneously cut it without nick-ing or damage. Eliminating the use of knives and box cutters, this ergonomic hand tool can be placed anywhere on the cable tie strap for a fast cut and safe removal.

Providing double insulated

Cable Tie Removal Tool Protects Wire Harnesses, Speeds Retrofi ts and Repairs

and cushioned grips, a return spring, lock, and properly lever-aged scissor-action cutter, the rugged ACT Cable Tie Removal Tool is made from heat treated alloy steel. Suitable for retro t-ting and repairing wire harnesses in assembly and eld service ap-

plications, it can safely remove plastic, copper, or aluminum strap-ping up to ½" wide.

Literature is available upon request. For more information con-tact ACT Fas-tening Solutions, Div. of Advanced

Manufacturers are getting leaner, but many are still over-looking the cost of indirect materi-als used at plant oor level. This is an expensive oversight, according to Marc Malkin, VMI manager for Buck & Hickman, a leading distributor of tools, maintenance, and health and safety products

Industry is striving to elimi-nate waste and become more ef- cient. Inventory held on-site is typically minimized, with respon-sibility transferred to the supplier. Management of the supply chain is becoming a discipline in its own right. It improves cash ow by reducing inventory while at the same time making sure there is enough stock to avoid downtime.

None of this is new for a well-run manufacturing site. However, indirect materials are often overlooked. These include maintenance, repair and opera-tion items such as tools, machine parts, gloves, chemicals, safety glasses – items that play a key role in manufacturing, but are peripheral to the nished product. Individually, such items are gen-erally of low value, but they are often used in high volumes. The total spend across the thousands of the different MRO products used in plant operations can be in the millions. For example, if a drill bit is unavailable, it can result in costly downtime, a distress purchase and courier costs... all of this for something worth just a few dollars.

In fairness, the logistics of tracking thousands of individu-ally low value items can seem like a nightmare. Such inventory is thought of as a “cost of doing business.” In reality, however, it is a cost of doing business that, with the right technology to de ne and support the inventory distribution, can save millions and dramati-cally impact both cash ow and the bottom line.

Reducing inventory for the sake of saving bottom line costs alone can be a costly mistake. Without the correct technology and processes to record, track and manage such inventory, the result

could be chaos, and in itself seri-ously affect production ef ciency. Having the right solutions for factory oor processes is critical to controlling these costs.

Typically, several different suppliers are used for such items, and maverick uncontrolled pur-chasing is common. This means that there is no single process to manage MRO items. One an-swer is to cut the number of suppli-ers, which in itself can yield signi -cant transactional cost savings. For MRO items, the supplier base can often be cut to one – an industrial distributor who then manages the entire process. By selecting the correct partner you can focus on solutions to save cost and minimize stock outs.

The supervisor who claims that they can buy the carbide mill-ing insert cheaper down the road is missing the point. Typically, a distributor has the processes and understanding to manage thousands of items. It is, after all, what they do. Having one point of contact will also give you an in-sight into what is actually bought.

Having the right technology and experience is only part of the answer. If you want to realize both ef ciency savings by reducing downtime and also cut the cost of such a large, but often unseen budget, you need to change your systems. For a lean operator, change in itself is not new.

The rst step is to understand how the real MRO supply chain works in your organization. You will often nd informal processes and hoarding of equipment that others know nothing about. This is to be expected; after all, no one wants to be responsible for stopping the production line. The company must work closely with lineside operators to establish a system that works and gives them the con dence that what they need
