Measurement methods

How can I find out, how my antenna system performs?

Basically there are three major measurement methods:

Measurement of the antenna match and the resultingreflection

Cable fault location with Distance to Fault (TDR or FDR)

RF power testing with transmit equipment

Using reflection measurement, the antenna match, which is

most important for antenna system performance, can bemeasured directly and precisely.

Modern transmitting installations are prepared for aimpedance Z=50 Ohms. This means, that antenna, cable

and all other parts, such as splitters or connectors, need tobe matched for 50 Ohms as well.

If the impedance is deviating from 50 Ohms, we define this asmismatch.

RF Energy is not terminated correctly at the antenna, but reflected. The more the impedance is deviating, the more valuable RF energy is reflected from theantenna and brought back to the PA.

If we consider an energy model, the following effects areresulting:

Reflected energy is not radiated from the antenna and cannot be used for radio transmission.

Reflected energy is brought back to the transmitter‘s PA,

where it causes heat loss. This can end up in a destructionof the PA modules.

Reflected energy leads to intermodulation in the radio aswell.

But RF energy is not just energy, but a moving wave along the cable:

In case of mismatch, the reverse energy causes standing waves in

the antenna line (reflection due to the change of media).

Current and voltage maxima generated by the standing wave canalso e.g. destroy filters by adding reverse and forward voltage.

How can the antenna system match be tested?

All reflection istruments are based on a Wheatstone

bridge, where a unknown resistor (the antenna system, inthis case) is compared with a reference. Even smalldifference result in a misbalance, which can be measuredeasily:

Measurement: Reflected Power Ratio

Reflected Power Ratio is a percentage ratio betweenreflected and forward power.

Measurement: Reflection coefficient

The natural reflection coeffcient r or ρ is a pseudo unit, thequotiend of the forward and reflected voltage vectors.

ρ = 1 is full reflection (100 % reflected power), mρ = 100 areabout 1% reflected power.

Measurement: VSWR

Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR) is an usual unit forreflection measurements. It is generated from the reflection

coeffcient.

It is still very common in RF service and engineering, however it is referring to the voltage, which is less

interesting as we are more interested in power efficiency.

A VSWR of 1,5 is compareable to a ρ of 0.2 or 4% reflectedpower ratio.

Measurement: Return Loss

For professional testing, the antenna reflection is mostlymeasured in return loss.

It is measured with the logarithmic pseudo unit dB and canbe calculated from reflected power.

20dB is the same as ρ = 0.1 resp. a reflected power ratio of

Fault location

Fault location with Distance to fault is an importantmeasurement for network operators, focusing on cableperformance.

It is measuring impedance changes in feeder cables andcan also be called structural return loss.

Formerly the TDR measurement wasused, nowadays the FDR method ismore common.

After measuring reflection, a reverse

FFT is performed by the analyzer, putting frequency domain data back intothe time or location domain.
