NovaBACKUP xSP Requirements Overview

This document will provide the prerequisites and installation information. This information isintended to be a guide for Administrators of a NovaBACKUP xSP implementation. For more

detailed instructions, please see the installation guide for the individual application components.

Installation Order

The following document will explain the different components, installation of each component, andthe order in which you proceed installing each component. Below is the order in which you need toinstall the NovaBACKUP xSP components.

1. NovaBACKUP xSPStorage Server(Required)

2. Central Management Console (Recommended)

The following component requirements that are listed below are not part of a standard trialinstallation.

3. Remote Manager (Optional)

4. Commerce Server (Optional)

5. Cloud Restore (Optional)

6. Application Updater (Optional)

RECOMMENDED BASE INSTALLATION

The recommended base installation for the NovaBACKUP xSP environment includes theinstallation of the:

Storage Server

Central Management Console

Client software

This will allow you setup new accounts, start backing up your customers data immediately, andbegin monitoring the jobs you created.

NovaBACKUP xSP Storage Server

INTRODUCTION:

Version 12.5 of the Storage Server software relies more on the SQL database than previousversions, as the file list and histories, as well as the storage location for those files that your userhas backed up, are stored in the database. With the SQL database being central to the structure ofthe Storage Server, it is critical to perform regular backups of the SQL database and ensure thatthe database server itself is running well.

The database server(s) and the storage locations are the most significant part of scaling your xSPStorage Server installation. We would not recommend the use of Microsoft SQL Express for anyinstallation above 25 users because SQL Express 2008 R2 limits the size of the database to 10GB.

RECOMMENDED BASIC CONFIGURATIONS FOR STORAGE SERVER:

Up to 25 users: Local Microsoft SQL 2008 R2 Express installed on the same machine as theStorage Server is acceptable, 4-8GB of RAM.

Up to 50 users: Local Microsoft SQL 2008 R2 (Full Version) installed on the same machine as theStorage Server is acceptable, however, you should consider putting your database on a separateserver, 8GB of RAM.

Up to 150 users: Microsoft SQL 2008 R2 (Full Version) installed on a separate machine with atleast 8GB of RAM. Separate dedicated machine for the Storage Server with 4GB of RAM.

Over 150 users: Please contact a NovaStor Support Specialist or your NovaStor Sales Engineer.

REQUIREMENTS:

Central Management Console

INTRODUCTION:

NovaBACKUP Central Management Console (CMC) is a web-based management console thatallows users to create, delete and run backup or restore jobs on the computers that haveNovaBACKUP installed on them. The CMC is a full management console that includes everythingyou need in order to manage multiple installations of NovaBACKUP, whether those installations areon the LAN or across the WAN.

Remote Manager

INTRODUCTION:

The Remote Manager has many different uses. One use is as a web-based administration tool forthe Storage Server(s). The Remote Manager also exposes a web service through which you canprogrammatically manage your Storage Server(s) and serves as the conduit to pass accountsetting for new customers who sign up for your service using a custom client and the commerceserver interface.

This application can be installed all on one machine with the Storage Server, or you can install theStorage Server Remote Management Service (the part that talks directly to the Storage Server) onthe Storage Server, and install the web application/service portion on a separate web server.

Commerce Server

INTRODUCTION:

The Commerce Server (CS) is a web-based product catalog which allows your customers whodownload and install your Custom Branded Client Software to select from available onlinestorage products that you specify. The Commerce Server will capture a customers contact andbilling information, storing them in the CS database, and utilizing the Remote Managers AccountCreation Settings to create a new account on the Storage Server.

You can create multiple Products in your Commerce Server catalog that are available tocustomers running your custom software. For example, a product might be a free 10GB storageoption or $20 for 20GB of storage paid annually. The client will connect to this web service to signup for your backup service. It will provision the backup account on your Storage Server and recordthe billing information.

The Commerce Server is not a billing solution. It takes the information from the client, creates theuser account and password on the Storage Server via the Remote Manager, and then stores thatusers billing information in the Commerce Server database. You can then export all thatinformation to CSV document and import it to whatever billing software you may have.

Important Notes:Make sure you have added a Storage Server to the Remote Manager before installing theCommerce Server. The Storage Server address you specify in the Remote Manager will bepropagated to the backup clients, so make sure you use an IP address or fully qualified host nameaccessible from backup clients (ex. use a public IP address or DNS name).

Cloud Restore

INTRODUCTION:

Cloud Restore is a web-based application that replaces the Web-Based Restore (WBR) and allowsa NovaBACKUP xSP client user to restore data from their hosted storage server account withoutthe use of locally installed client software.

Application Updater

INTRODUCTION:

The Application Update Server is our solution to provide automatic upgrades to your users, andalso specify different upgrade files for any version of the software as well as specify differentproduct names. Ex: If you have a product named ACME Backup, you can have ACME Backup'sset to the specific ACME Backup upgrade that you want, while your other product named BetaBackup does not upgrade.

This web service is checked to verify if there are any new upgrades from v12.0 clients on clientlaunch, as well as when it connects to the Storage Server.

The application updater is administered through the SQL database management tools. It is

imperative that you have the build information for the previous versions you are upgrading from.This information can be found in your account athttp://builder.novastor.com.
