Patterns for use in Painter ™ documentation

Thanks for the purchase (or interest) in the patterns set. I hope you find them of interest and use

CD: Please select the files and drag/copy the files to the hard disk and place in a sub folder of Painter

For most versions of Painter there has been no specific folder for the patterns.

The pattern files are all in PTL format

Serial number

Please store the serial numbers for future reference, for updates or replacement CDs

Load patterns

Access the patterns via the patterns palette (in the art materials palette) and load library command (on the pc, select PTL files)

The patterns can be accessed via the toolbox via the palettes at the bottom. Click the patterns palette to display all the current patterns

Page 3: Manual for patterns for Corel (R) Painter

Now go to the arrow on the top right of the palette. The menu offers a variety of pattern settings such as show the patterns as a list or thumbnails. The current selection can be captured as a pattern; the current image can be defined as a pattern; a fractal pattern can be created; an image can be saved to the current palette / library etc. The patterns can be moved between libraries. The open library option is the more useful at this stage, select the PTL / pattern library via this command item

Another way to load patterns is via window menu and you can show the patterns library palette.

Page 4: Manual for patterns for Corel (R) Painter

The menu is the same as the toolbox. The palette does offer a visual display of the current selected pattern as well as scaling and pattern offset and size and pattern type etc

Backup of patterns

I would suggest creating a backup of the patterns files and use only a copy in Painter to avoid any corruption issues.

Patterns use

Please consult the Painter manual or a reference book on Painter. The painter patterns can be used in impasto brushes, pattern settings in brushes, original luminance/glass distortions/surface textures, fills, liquid metal, surface textures, selections, etc

Hints and tips for Painter ™

Painter uses patterns throughout

Patterns have been with Painter from the early days. In most cases, the patterns are accessed via the original luminance option (similar to the paper grain)

Painter and 'express texture'

Use patterns in Painter ™ 'express texture' command to create stunning black and white imagery.

Page 6: Manual for patterns for Corel (R) Painter

Patterns and adjust color

Adjust color uses the patterns (original luminance). Creates unusual color shifts. Reapply using different scaling to create surreal color effects.

Motion blur

The motion blur and soften and super soften commands cannot use the pattern information. Simply use the selection commands and then apply super soften or motion blur.

Apply blobs

Copy the pattern into the pasteboard and apply blobs. Or use the blobs pattern option / original luminance

Pattern stroke

Or create a pattern based brush stroke or 'pattern pens'

Page 7: Manual for patterns for Corel (R) Painter

Custom tile

Custom tile' plugin uses the patterns to create weird and wonderful textures.

Pop art

The patterns can be used in the pop art fills to add unusual variant pop art effects

Mosaics

Use the patterns in mosaics command

Apply screen

'Apply screen' uses the pattern to excellent effect.

Page 8: Manual for patterns for Corel (R) Painter

Surface texture

Apply surface texture command uses the patterns to superb effect for a wonderful range of bumpy / metallic surfaces. Various lighting and smoothness and scales can be applied. The surface textures can also be re-applied to create unique textured surfaces. Textures and distortions can also be applied to great effect

Multiple lights can be applied to the 'original luminance / pattern' surface to create interesting surface texture designs

Nozzles

Use the patterns as a source for stunning nozzles in Painter ™

Seamless

A wide range of resolutions. All seamless patterns for Painter ™

Standard format

All the patterns are stored in standard Painter pattern format (though that seems to be changing with the latest

version and a new painter patterns file is now also available)

Pattern mover

You can use the pattern mover to move the patterns to new patterns libraries at any point for regrouping and different project work

Export

Save the pattern files and export as TIFF to other applications such as 3D applications or Photoshop

Text

Use the patterns in text for stunning fills and more

Color overlay

'Color overlay' plugin uses the paper patterns from Graphicxtras as well. Use the dye concentrations or hiding power settings to create different colored textured effects on any surface or image.

Grains

The textures can also be easily added to the patterns libraries.

Category

Use the patterns in combo with brush strokes (mainly via the cloning option) though others are via plugin method / category

Clone brushes

Use patterns in clone brushes and more

Page 10: Manual for patterns for Corel (R) Painter

Fills

Use the pattern option in the fills command for superb backgrounds, source material and more

Captured dab

Use the pattern as a source for a captured brush. Export pattern and then select and use the captured brush command.

Floaters

Patterns can also be used in a number of the floater plugins such as glass

Liquid metal / dynamic plugin

Use the clone source option in liquid metal floater to create 'metallic' blobs or brush strokes from the colorful patterns. The patterns can be painted on as clone metal but the pattern can be added in a more random manner using the 'rain' option and that applies blobs of the patterns across the image

Page 11: Manual for patterns for Corel (R) Painter

Distort

Use to create weird and wonderful distorted Painter pattern brush strokes.

Shape

Use the pattern created selection and 'convert to shape' to create a pattern shape.

Adjust dye

Adjust dye concentration' plugin uses the pattern with different max and min threshold settings to add interesting color effects.

Distress

Distress' plug-in uses the pattern and offers a wide selection of edge.

Depth of field

'Depth of field' plug-in is not the quickest filter but it can create stunning blur effects using the patterns

Glass distortion

'Glass distortion' effect is one of those amazing plugin tools and uses the patterns in a vast number of ways, for glass / metallic looks and more

Glass distortion is also available via the layer / dynamic plug-ins and can be applied and modified at any point in the creative process

Depth

Paint pattern depth and color and more

Page 12: Manual for patterns for Corel (R) Painter

Projected

Use the pattern as a source for projected brush strokes as well as rendered brush strokes via the general brush panel

Look

Use patterns in looks as well as scripts.

Auto selection

The current image can be selected (or part of it) using the selection menu auto select command. One of the options is 'original luminance' and this uses the pattern data for the selection. You can then fill, apply effects etc to the selected or inverted region.

Auto clone

Use the auto clone command combined with pattern brushes / clone settings to apply the pattern to an image. In the more recent versions of Painter, use the Auto Painting command (replaced auto clone). You can record strokes etc and play them back, again using the patterns in clone brushes or with clone color set to ON
