    1.2 The PTO driveshaft

The woodchipper is intended for a PTO driveshaft with the following specifications:

Type: PTO Axle SFT S7Mounting: 1 3/8 x Z6 int. notspline (tractor side)

    1 3/4 x Z6 int. notspline (woodchipper side)Length (adjustable) Min. 1336 mm / max. 1741 mm

(note that the axle may need shortening before use)Max. transferred moment: 1450 NmNominal output:

    540 rpm: 51 kW / 70 CV-HP PS1000 rpm: 78 kW / 106 CV-HP PS

Interval between greasings: See the accompanying manual

We strongly recommend that you choose a PTO driveshaft which has a safety clutch with

free-wheel mounted, to protect the tractors rear when stopping the woodchipper.

The above specifications mean that the maximum power transfer via the PTO driveshaft tothe woodchipper is 78 kW (= 106 HK). Should you wish to transfer up to max. 90 kW (=122 HK), you must use a PTO driveshaft designed for the purpose.

In section 2.3 an incorrect mounting of the PTO driveshaft is demonstrated.

    2.Mounting the woodchipper

This section deals with how the woodchipper is mounted and coupled to a tractor.

2.1 On delivery of the new woodchipper

When the new woodchipper is delivered from the factory, it is mounted on 2 or 4 pieces of

wood, or possibly on a euro pallet. This wood is intended solely for transportation betweenthe supplier and the customer and must therefore be removed before the woodchipper isput into operation.

2.2 Mounting the woodchipper on a tractor

The woodchipper must be mounted on the tractors 3-point hitch-mount with split-bolts. Forsafety reasons it is important that the woodchipper is correctly affixed in all 3 places.

    2.3 Mounting the PTO driveshaft

The PTO driveshaft is first mounted on the notspline on the woodchippers main axle andthen on the tractors PTO. Note that the coupling mounted on the PTO driveshaft must beturned towards the woodchipper.

    3. Checking the woodchipper before use

Before the woodchipper is started, it is important that it is carefully checked, as bolts etcmay have loosened during transport. If this inspection is omitted, accidents can occur, andat worst the woodchipper can be damaged and cause personal injury.

Warning: When the woodchipper is opened and after its shields have been taken off, the

tractor must be stopped and the PTO driveshaft dismounted.

    3.1 Checking the knifes

To ensure a good chipping of the wood the knives must be sharp. If the knives are blunt,or their cutting edge has been hacked, they can be ground (see section 6.4 on grindingknives). If the knives have become too worn to be reground, it may be necessary to mounta new set of knives (see section 6.6 on replacing knives).

Warning: The knives are very sharp, and it is advisable not to place your fingers inside therotor casing, even when the woodchipper is at a standstill and the PTO driveshaft isdismounted!

    PC Stl ApS, Hndvrkervej 6, 8881 Thorswww.pc-staal.dk

The remaining bolts on the woodchipper must also be checked and if necessary also

    tightened securely.

    3.4 Checking the main bearings

The bearings must be checked for looseness. If there is too much slack, the woodchippercannot function properly and it may be necessary to change the bearings.

Remember to grease the bearings regularly to ensure a long lifetime (see further section6.9).

Note that the spindle screws in the flange bearing on the infeed side must not bemounted/tightened, as the axle must move freely. This applies only to the 65 mm flangebearing position closest to the infeed!

    3.5 Checking the shields

After final control of the above points the woodchipper is shut off, and the two bolts(M16x50 with locking nuts) that fasten the upper and lower parts together are tightenedsecurely (see figure 2). Unless these bolts are in place and properly tightened, thewoodchipper must not be started. Failure to do this can be extremely dangerous.

    4. Running the woodchipper

Before the woodchipper is started, it must be placed on a level, stable surface. In additionit is extremely important that you are 100% certain that there are no bolts, nuts or othermetal objects in the machine, as these can be thrown out and damage persons, propertyor the machine itself. We advise strongly against using the chute to store tools etc. duringtransport of the woodchipper, as this can result in them being pulled into the machine

    when it is started.

To ensure a long life for the machine we recommend that the points in chapter 3 are gonethrough carefully.

Warning: The woodchipper must be correctly mounted on the tractors 3-point hitch-mount when in use.

4.1 Starting and stopping the woodchipper

The woodchipper is started by starting the tractor; then switch the PTO on and the rotorwill start.

The woodchipper is stopped by switching off the PTO, after which the rotor will graduallyslow down its revs and finally come to a standstill of its own accord.

Figures explaining this are also found on the woodchipper (the same figures are also

    pictured in section 5.4.12).

The control clamp must be in position 1 when the woodchipper is switched on, and mustalso be in this position when the woodchipper is not in use.

To avoid any unintentional start of the infeed, the control clamp is so formed that it islocked when set in position 1.

To release the control clamp from position 1, lift the small hook (see figure 4) and thendraw the control clamp into position 2.

Warning: For safety reasons we issue the strictest warning against avoiding or removingthis function!

4.3 The hydraulic system in general

When the woodchipper is running, it is important that the hydraulic system is adjustedproperly and working correctly.

As standard, the woodchippers safety valve is set at the permissible running pressure of160 bar. To ensure a long lifetime for the hydraulic motor(s) it is important to checkregularly that this pressure is not exceeded.

The hydraulic pressure is checked while running when wood is fed into the woodchipper. When the wood is being cut in the woodchipper, check that the indicator on the pressuregauge does not exceed 160 bar. If this happens, the pressure must be adjusteddownwards in the safety valve. This is described insection 6.14.

When the woodchipper is started, make sure that the infeed roller(s) are turning correctlyin relation to the position of the control clamp (see figure 3). If this is not the case, check

that the hydraulic hoses are correctly mounted on the tractor (they may have beenreversed). If the hydraulic hoses are correctly mounted on the tractor and the infeed is stillnot working, check that the hoses are correctly mounted. This is described in sections6.12.1, 6.12.2 or 6.12.3 depending on the number of infeed rollers installed and the shaftspeed monitor.

When working with the hydraulic system, remember to remove the hydraulic hoses fromthe tractors outlet to ensure that there is no pressure left in the hydraulic system.

    4.4 Adjusting the infeed speed

The speed at which the wood can be pulled into the machine is adjustable. By turning theflow valve on the control valve block (see figure 6) you can change the speed at which theinfeed rollers rotate, thus controlling the infeed speed.

4.5.1 Adjusting the locking mechanism for the swivel nozzle

If the nozzle is not properly locked when the locking arm is tightened, the lockingmechanism can be tightened. This is done in the following way (see figure 9):

    1. Loosen the locking arm by pulling it into a horizontal position.2. Loosen the locking screw.3. Tighten the adjusting screw a little (eg. a -turn).

    4. Tighten the locking arm and see if the lock on the nozzle is properly locked if thisis not the case, start again at point 1.5. Loosen the locking arm.6. Tighten the locking screw so that the adjusting screw is locked.7. Tighten the locking arm.

The locking mechanism should now be ready for use.

If you have not mounted shaft the speed monitor and can hear that the woodchipper ishaving difficulty (losing revs during feeding), you can stop the feeding for a moment bypushing the control clamp over into position 1, or possibly 3, until you can hear that therotor is up in revs again. Be careful that when the control clamp is pushed into position 3,the infeed rollers rotation direction is reversed (ie. the rollers turn the opposite way round),and the wood is pushed out of the machine again.

Warning: When the wood is drawn into the woodchipper, be aware that pieces of woodcan be thrown out of the chute.

Warning: Be careful with loose clothing, string, rope and the like, which can get stuck inthe woodchipper or the wood to be cut and at worst pull you into the machine.

    5. Safety precautions

When using the woodchipper, there are a number of precautions which must be observed. To avoid accidents it is important to take care and follow the safety precautions set out inthis manual.

To make doubly sure, it is also important that you also do maintenance on the machine

    and check it regularly.

    5.1 General precautions

When the woodchipper is running, you must always be attentive. Wood can be thrown outof the machine, foreign bodies can be drawn into it, or something else unexpected canhappen with unfortunate consequences.

    So take the following precautions:

Be attentive. Never put your fingers in the machines openings.

Never open the machine during operation - stop the tractor and check that the rotor hascompletely stopped before opening the woodchipper.

Never open the machine while the PTO driveshaft is mounted.

When remounting the shield, first hold the rear shield in place while the 4 screws are

mounted and tightened. Next, hold the top shield on and mount and tighten the 4 screws. Then mount the front shield again.

    5.2.3 Mounting/dismounting the bearing shield

The bearing shield covers the rotors main bearings on the woodchippers tractor side. Theshield consists of a box of perforated plate with an aluminium flange bolted for mountingthe SFT- shield (see section 5.2.4).

It is important that the shields perforation is not covered, as otherwise the woodchipperwill not work as intended.

The bearing shield is best dismounted by first removing the SFT-shield (see section 5.2.4),after which the two bolts on each side of the shield are loosened and unscrewed. Theshield can then be removed. Note that it is not necessary to dismount the aluminium flange

    bolted to the bearing shield.

    5.2.4 Mounting/dismounting the SFT-shield

The SFT-shield covers the coupling and part of the PTO driveshaft and cannot bemounted until the part of the PTO driveshaft that is to lie on the woodchipper (typically thepart with the coupling) is mounted on the woodchippers notspline.

5.2.5 Mounting/dismounting the control valve shield

Before the shield can be dismounted, the pressure must be taken out of the hydraulicsystem and the hoses removed from the tractors outlet, as otherwise hydraulic oil mayflow out of the pressure gauge coupling, when the gauge is removed.

To dismount the shield that covers the control valve first unscrew the pressure gauge. This is done by loosening the screwcap on the pressure gauge coupling, after which the

pressure gauge can be easily unscrewed. Be careful not to lose the rubber packing in thepressure gauge coupling. Unscrew the 4 fillister-head bolts and the shield can now beremoved. See further in figure 12 for the procedure.

When remounting the shield, hold it in place over the valve and insert and tighten the 4

fillister-head bolts. Then screw on the pressure gauge and tighten the bolts while checkingthat the rubber packing is in place in the pressure gauge coupling.

Be careful not to put pressure into the hydraulic system before the pressure gauge isscrewed properly on again!

    5.3 Safety equipment

When using the woodchipper, it is important to wear personal safety equipment. Aminimum requirement is that you wear eye and ear protectors. In addition we recommendthat you wear safety shoes, work gloves and suitable work clothes.

Warning: Be careful with loose clothing, string, rope and the like, which can get stuck inthe woodchipper or the wood to be cut and at worst pull you into the machine.

    5.4 Sign display

    6. Maintenance

To reduce the risk of accident and to ensure a long life time for the woodchipper it mustundergo regular maintenance. In general you must be aware of the machines signals andcheck that any damage is repaired.

When the season is over, we recommend that you clean the woodchipper thoroughly toensure easy restart next time. When the new season comes, check the woodchipperbefore use (cf. chapter 3).

Note: During all maintenance, the PTO driveshaft between the woodchipper and thetractor must be dismounted for safety reasons. In addition the hydraulic hoses to theinfeed must be taken out of the valve block on the tractor. If the woodchipper is mountedwith shaft speed monitor, the lead to this must be taken out of the plug on the tractor.

    6.1 Opening the woodchipper

During maintenance of the woodchipper, it may be necessary to open the upper part of thewoodchipper in order to get to the rotor.

Opening the woodchipper is best done by first removing the front shield (see section 5.2.1)and then turning the nozzle, so that it points to the side of the woodchipper and is locked inthis position (see figure13 A). Then unscrew the two bolts at the coupling between the

6.2 Dismounting and mounting the infeed

When replacing the lower roller, the base counter-cutter and the side counter-cutter it isnecessary to dismount the infeed and pull it back a little in relation to the actualwoodchipper.

    6.2.1 Dismounting the infeed

To dismount the infeed follow the procedure below (which is the same whatever thenumber of infeed rollers):

    1. Check that the hydraulic hoses have been taken out of the tractor, and that there isthus no pressure in them.

    2. Dismount the front, top and rear shields as well as the shield over the control valvecf. section 5.2.1, section 5.2.2 and section 5.2.5.

    3. Dismount the two hydraulic hoses from the control valve block on the side of the

chute, as shown in figure 14A. It is useful to have a bucket or such-like ready, assome oil will inevitably trickle out of the hydraulic hoses and the control valve block. The two M8-bolts and the two M16-bolts that secure the infeed to the woodchippersbase frame can now be unscrewed (see figure14B).

    4. Now pull back the infeed (see figure 14C), making sure that the hydraulic hoses etc.are not stuck.

    5. To avoid the infeed from tipping, you can support it from beneath with eg a lowtrestle, as shown in figure 14C.

    6.3 Dismounting the knives

When the knives are to be ground, replaced or thoroughly checked, it is necessary todismount them.

The knives are best dismounted using the following procedure:

    1) Dismount the front and top shield and possibly the rear shield, cf. section 5.2.1,5.2.2 and 5.2.3.

    2) Open the woodchipper, so that the rotor is accessible.3) Turn the rotor until one of the 4 holes in the rotor is aligned with the block with a

hole on the side of the rotor frame, and fix the split bolts so that the rotor is locked(see figure 15B).

    4) The first knife can now be dismounted by unscrewing the nut from the bolts that areholding the knives in position. You may have to exert some strength, as the Nord-Lock washers offer considerable resistance. The bolt may need to be held in

counter to prevent it from turning too.5) When the knives have been dismounted, remove the split bolts. As the rotor is no

longer in balance it will begin to turn of its own accord. So be careful!6) Turn the rotor until the next hole is aligned with the hole in the side of the rotor

casing and insert the split bolts in; the next knife can now are dismounted.7) Repeat the procedure in points 5 and 6 until all 4 knives have been dismounted.

Warning: The rotor is in balance with the 4 mounted knives, and if one or more of these is

removed, the rotor is no longer in balance and will therefore begin to turn of its own accordunless it is locked. So mind your fingers - and never put your fingers into the machine.

Warning: Even if the knives are dismounted because they are blunt, there can still beplaces in the cutting-edge where they are sharp. So be careful and always use thickgloves when handling the knives.

    6.4 Mounting the knives

When the knives have been dismounted, for example to be ground or replaced, they mustbe remounted correctly. For safety reasons it is important that the guidelines set downhere for mounting knives are followed.

When remounting the knives, make sure that bolts, nuts and the Nord-Lock washers are ingood condition. If this is not the case, they must be replaced. Read also section 6.17 on

    use of the Nord-Lock washers.

    Each knife is mounted with:

3 M16x80 quality 10.9 with countersunk head and 6-edge insides (on mountedstandard knives).

3 nylon locking nuts for M16 quality 8.8. 3 sets of Nord-Lock washers (each consisting of 2 identical opposites) for M16.

The Nord-Lock washers are mounted in pairs, so that the two roughly notched surfaces

face each other (see section 6.18). It is important that these washers face correctly.

The bolts are tightened to a moment of 160 Nm.

Warning: When the knives are mounted, the rotors balance is changed, and it willtherefore begin to turn of its own accord. So be careful with your fingers and never putthem in the machine.

Warning: Never mount damaged knives. If the knives are bent or cracked, do not mountthem. It can be extremely dangerous not to observe this rule.

Warning: Always mount all 4 knives with all the bolts correctly mounted and tightenedduring operation. If one or more knives or bolts is omitted, the rotor can begin to oscillateand at worst be wrecked.

Warning: When the knives are new or newly ground, they are very sharp, and you cantherefore cut yourself. So be careful and use gloves when handling the knives.

    6.5 Grinding the knives

After considerable use the knives will become worn and the cutting-edge blunt. It istherefore necessary to grind the knives regularly. The interval between grinding dependson which type of wood is being cut, and whether soil and stones have been pulled into the

To ensure long life for the knives you must observe the following:

Use the machine only to cut wood. Make sure that the wood entering the machine is free of soil and small stones as far as

    possible.

Never put big stones, iron or other metals into the woodchipper.

Warning: Never try to grind the knives, while they are still mounted on the rotor. This canbe extremely dangerous.

Warning: When the knives are new or newly ground, they are very sharp, and you cantherefore cut yourself. So be careful and use thick gloves when handling the knives.

    6.6 Replacing the knives

When after long use the knives have become so worn that the cutting-edge lies behind thehole through the rotor (see figure 18), the knife must be replaced.

6.15 Adjusting the control clamp mechanism

To ensure that the infeed roller(s) have the correct functions in relation to the controlclamps position, and if all three positions (1. stop, 2. feed, 3. reverse) are not working, itmay be necessary to adjust the control clamp mechanism.

The control clamp is working correctly, when the infeed roller(s) rotation direction is asshown in figure 3, and all 3 positions are working!

If all three positions can be adjusted in the control clamp, but position 2 and 3 (feeding andreversing) have been reversed in relation to what is shown in figure 3, the hydraulic hosesare probably not correctly mounted. In section 6.12.1 (one infeed roller), 6.12.2 (two infeed

rollers) or 6.12.3 (two infeed rollers and shaft speed monitor) there is a description of howthe hydraulic hoses must be mounted.

    1. Set the control clamp position 1 (see figure 3). Unscrew completely the loose M8-bolt with locking-nut and withdraw it from the piece of bar steel with a hole which iswelded onto the screw thread bar so that the bar is freed from the verticallyadjustable part.

    2. Check now whether it is necessary to adjust the control clamp mechanism. This isdone as follows:

    a) Set the control clamp in position 1, and also set the directional slide valve in

position 1 (see figure 34 top).b) Check that the hole in the bar steel welded onto the screw thread bar is

aligned to the hole in the vertically adjustable part.c) Set the control clamp in position 2, and also set the directional slide valve in

position 3.f) Check again that the two holes are aligned.3. If while checking under point 2 you find that the holes are variously unaligned, you

must change the wandering on the control clamp mechanism. See section 6.15.2.4. If while checking under point 2 you find that the holes are uniformly unaligned, you

must make sure that the directional slide valve is adjusted to the notches in thecorrugated plate. See section 6.15.3.

    7. The shaft speed monitor

When the wood that is to be chipped is fed into the woodchipper, the rotor will decreasethe speed of revolutions. The shaft speed monitor automatically stops the infeed rollersbefore the tractor comes to a halt.

7.1 How the shaft speed monitor works

The shaft speed monitor measures how fast the rotor is turning. If the number of revs fallsbelow a certain level, it shuts off the hydraulic oil feed to the hydraulic motors which drivethe infeed rollers, so that the wood is no longer fed into the woodchipper, but waits untilthe rotor has again increased in revs, after which the hydraulic oil feeds the hydraulicmotors and the wood is again fed into the woodchipper.

As standard, the shaft speed monitor is set to run at 1000 rpm on the tractors PTO-axle,

and will open the feed of hydraulic oil at 900 rpm and shut off again at 700 rpm.

This means that when the woodchipper starts, the hydraulic system and thus the infeedrollers will not engage until the rotor reaches over 900 rpm. As the wood is fed intothe woodchipper, the rotor slowly loses revs, and if these fall below 700 rpm, the feed willstop and the rotor will increase in rotation speed. When the number of revs returns toabove 900 rpm, the wood will again be fed into the machine.

7.2.5 Magnetic valve and ball valve

The shaft speed monitor shuts off the hydraulic oil feed to the hydraulic motors by openinga magnetic valve (see figure 41) so the hydraulic oil runs past the infeed rollers thusbypassing them.

If you wish to at bypass the shaft speed monitor you can shut off the infeed of hydraulic oilto the magnetic valve by shutting off the ball valve positioned in continuation of the

magnetic valve. There is then a constant pressure on the hydraulic system and the onlyway to control the feed is with the aid of the control clamp positioned alongside the edge ofthe chute.
