MANTAS is the most recent Vertical Line Array element designed by Outline (in 2009). Thanks to the great experience accumulated with Butterfly - the Outline system with the same fundamental components and characteristics - MANTAS offers leading edge performance from a cabinet that is

extraordinarily compact and light-weight. Its top-grade components - two 8-inch mid-woofers with Neodymium magnets and a 3-inch compression driver loaded with the well-known D.P.R.W.G. - ensure absolutely insignificant distortion levels and greater reliability.

Even if it might not seem an essential aspect in electro-acoustics, creating lines with an eye-catching design is an inevitable requisite for Outline. MANTAS - following Italian-made products’ rightful acclaim in the aesthetic field - therefore

also has BOLD GROUNDBREAKING lines. In fact, there’s nothing else like it on the market. As usual, it is sure to be a “source of inspiration” for competitors (both large and small).

The section for reproducing the high frequencies on the MANTAS is entrusted to a compression driver with a 3” diaphragm loaded with a D.P.R.W.G. (Double Parabolic Reflective Wave Guide), a well-known Outline international patent, already used successfully on the Butterfly system.

The result of three years’ research and trials, the D.P.R.W.G. is a truly original device, the design of which is based solely on mathematical calculations. It has the task of transforming the circular plane waves emitted by the source at its entrance into rectangular plane waves at its output, keeping identical paths from all the source’s emission points.

Further information can be found in the White Paper by Guido Noselli (www.outline.it).

MANTAS is a reference point in its category (compact VLA) for me-dium-sized applications. But it was not only con-ceived as an object in its own right: it has the great advantage of being com-patible with Butterfly. In fact, it has the same flying points and can be used along with the Butterfly system (flown below it) as an element able to give wider horizontal coverage (120°) for FRONT-FILL and DOWN-FILL applications.

Numerous rental companies worldwide benefit from the “Butterfly-Mantas” combination to ensure even sound distribution for their audiences, no matter how large they are.

A VLA formed by MANTAS elements reproduces music in a transparent and extremely dynamic manner, enabling even the tiniest sonic details to be heard and with absolute respect for the speed of the transient response. The headroom is sure to surprise, above all when considering the cabinet’s dimensions and the “featherlight” weight of each single element.

12 MANTAS WITH 4 AMPLIFIERS...

ON-BOARD PRECISION HARDWARE

MANTAS is used in biamp format. The channels of the amplifiers will power the 8-inch mid woofer (LF-MF section) and the 3-inch compression driver (HF section) separately. MANTAS clearly has a good COST:EFFICIENCY RATIO. With just four amplifiers, twelve elements (6+6 in stereo) can be correctly powered: this type of set-up ensures exciting SPL for a large audience. Outline recommends the use of its “T Five” amplifiers and Genius 26 processors (or units with similar characteristics).

MANTAS - Single element frequency response

The mechanics of the MANTAS flying system is identical to that of the BUTTERFLY

system and offers the necessary precision for the adjustments foreseen with a resolution of 0.25° per step between the elements, in spite

of the capacity being over-sized compared to the load handled. VLA set-up in the field is a

job that takes just a few minutes and does not require any physical strain.

The system’s main frame was also designed for “stacked” use: this practical function is useful in all

cases in which it is decided to install the VLA on the floor (e.g. on stages) rather then fly it. Using the V616 stabilizer feet, it is also possible to aim the stacked

VLA at the audience with the necessary inclination.

The dimensions and materials used enabled the system to obtain certification, according to the strictest international norms, for flying up to 32 elements in an

array, which is almost eight metres high. Regarding the aiming of individual elements, compared to all the line

arrays currently on the market, the flying system features unbeatable adjustment precision, not to mention the load it is able to carry and the compactness that enables it to be an

integral part of each element.

ID DESCRIPTION CODE ID DESCRIPTION CODE

FIG. N° 1 - MULTI-LEVEL INDOOR SPORTS ARENASound reinforcement design for a multi-level indoor sports arena by means of the use of a centre cluster with 4 VLA (vertical line array) systems. Openarray 3D can import DXF files (the standard format for CAD-type files), even those regarding considerably complex venue layouts. The software enables to view the predicted SPL (sound pressure level) for each individual frequency. It also allows to check the frequency response selected at any point in the listening zone.

FIG. N° 2 - LOCATION > ROTATION > AIMING > MIRRORINGAs in the example of the theatre shown in the illustration, Openarray 3D allows to position the VLA, rotate it on its vertical axis, aim it at the audience and, lastly, using the “Mirror” function, perfectly clone the other channel’s settings.

FIG. N° 3 - MULTI-ARRAY SYSTEM WITH “PHASOR SUMMATION”As in the example of the arena shown in the illustration, Openarray 3D shows the different arrival times of the sound (delay) fed out by the various VLA in the point selected (in this case the signals are correlated).

FIG. N° 4 - SUBWOOFERS IN CARDIOID CONFIGURATION Openarray 3D also ensures accurate simulations regarding “cardioid” configurations of enclosures used to reproduce low frequencies. The example in the illustration shows the SPL produced by 16 subwoofers in the aforementioned configuration at a frequency of 50 Hz.

FIG. N° 5 - MECHANICS, WEIGHTS, ANGLESAn accurate prediction of the angle between the elements, even if they are a combination of Mantas and Low-packs, greatly facilitates “aiming” at the audience. Riggers are thus provided with all the geometric and mechanical data necessary for carrying out their work perfectly, without worrying about committing any serious mistakes. A diagram is created for each array, with all the parameters for flying according to limits set by international safety norms for suspended loads.

OPENARRAY 3D SIMULATION SOFTWAREOPENARRAY is the avant-garde control and 3D simulation soft-ware, written by Outline’s R&D team. It’s a three dimensional software program that can predict the results expected from either a live performance or an installation of a wide range of Outline products, including all the Line Ar-rays and subwoofers models as well Outline’s most popular point source systems. The result is a ‘tool’ able to guide PA system en-gineers through correct set-up procedure from an acoustic and mechanical point of view while fully respecting safety norms.

OPENARRAY greatly facilitates installation, setting and aiming of Line Array elements: the risk of poor results is thus drastically reduced. The technology behind OPENARRAY is based on a GL platform and features incredibly fast rendering time from input of data to final design. OPENARRAY also has the ability to import DXF files, thus giving engineers a head start to final deployment of the intended sys-tem. This, and many other features, makes OPENARRAY one of the most exclusive product on the international scenario.
