FOOTBALL
Slide 2
Why do we call it Football in America? There is some confusion
about the name football because the rest of the world calls what we
know as soccer Football. A popular theory why the name football is
used in America is because most sports that didnt involve riding
horses (like polo) were referred to as football games in early
America. Football became a local favorite sport and the name stuck
and became widely used.
Slide 3
American Football History American football starting evolving
in the late 1800s after being adopted by the British sport of
Rugby. In 1876 the first rules of football were written in
Massachusetts by Yale University player and coach, Walter Camp. He
was known as the father of American Football. In 1923 the American
Professional Football Association (APFA) was renamed the National
Football League(NFL) In the 1930s the football design became what
it is today.

American Football Evolution Scoring a touchdown went from 4 to
5 points (1898) to 6 points (1912). In 1935 the first rule book was
published. Wearing a helmet became mandatory in 1943. Goal post
were moved from the front of the end zone to the back in 1974.
Quarterbacks were allowed to wear audio headsets in their helmets
to hear plays from coaches in 1994 A coachs challenge system was
added to the instant replay rules in 1999. Overtime rules were
changed for the regular season. It was no longer sudden death
unless the first team with possession scored a touchdown in
2012.

The Object of the Game The goal of American football is to get
the football into the end zone and score more points than your
opponent. Each teams goal is to win the Super Bowl Championship

My Favorite NFL Team The Seattle Seahawks! Established in 1976
Why? I live here in Washington (hometown). In 1984 the #12 was
retired for fans. My parents and family have been life long fans. I
went to Summer Training Camp, met players, and have been to
Seahawks games. My favorite players are Russell Wilson, Beast Mode
(a.k.a. Marshawn Lynch), Earl Thomas and Richard Sherman. Head
coach Pete Carroll They play in CenturyLink Field, one of the
loudest stadiums in the NFL. Our bitter rivals are the San
Francisco 49ers. The Seahawks were Super Bowl XLVIII (48)
Champions.
