Relocation of the Bus Garage At its December meeting, the Manning Senior Citizens Committee offered use of the bus garage to the shed, provided an alternative garaging arrangement could be made. The Committee accepted a suggestion to utilize the original bus parking position adjacent to the Manning Senior Citizens Centre near the kitchen and for the Shed to prepare a proposal. Allan Waugh prepared a concept plan which was table at the Manning Senior Citizens Committee meeting in February where it was accepted and agreed that it be forwarded to the City of South Perth for consideration. The original parking position already has a roof installed so will require walls and a door to close off the parking area to prevent the sort of vandalism that originally occurred to the bus (which led to the proposal to build the new garage which morphed into a garage plus the Men’s Shed). The shed was split into 19 separate zones and a separate Stocktake Copy of the Master Assets Register spreadsheet was amended to assign the assets to a particular zone. The 12 members who assisted in the stocktake were formed into teams of 2 people who were assigned one or more of the zones and were provided with a hard copy of the assets allocated to the assigned zones. The assets were checked off and where necessary were placed onto tables set up in the bus garage. These tables were for registered items which required tags or tagged items that were found not to be on the register. Items that required electrical testing were placed on a third table. All these items were subsequently processed to ensure that electrical tests were completed and tags were added. Asset Numbers were added to existing test tags where necessary. Other items were placed onto the bench near the paint storage shelves in the Wood Workshop and were subsequently assessed for suitability to be used in the Shed or were assigned for disposal. Bruce Bedford carried out a separate stocktake of the garden area and provided us with a list of items to add to the Master Assets Register. Rob Uppill and John Paisley also helped out. This process has enabled us to obtain information that will assist us to update the Asset Register. The separate Stocktake Copy of the Assets Register has been updated according to the results of the stocktake and will be used to update the Master Assets Register. Work is continuing to review the situation with regard to the hand tools and consumable items. David Vicary is rationalising the hardware storage shelves. Relocation of the Bus Garage

At its December meeting, the Manning Senior Citizens Committee offered use of the bus garage to the shed, provided an alternative garaging arrangement could be made. The Committee accepted a suggestion to utilize the original bus parking position adjacent to the Manning Senior Citizens Centre near the kitchen and for the Shed to prepare a proposal.

2018 Stocktake

On Wednesday 31st January 2018 and Friday 2nd February 2018, a stocktake was carried out at the shed.

These tables were for registered items which required tags or tagged items that were found not

General News and Notices

Relocation of the Shelves Following the stocktake, the storage of items in the container has been reviewed and as a result a number of items have been removed from the container. Some items have been set aside for disposal and others have been relocated.

The grey set of shelves with 30 (3 high by 10 deep) storage bays, that was previously located just inside the container on the left-hand side, has been relocated into the Shed adjacent to the similar green set of shelves (where the Engraving Machine was previously located). The relocated shelves are to be used for small power hand tools.

The large set of shelves near the metalwork shop, in which the hardware items (screws, nuts and bolts, nails and other items) are stored, has been relocated into the container. This has released space and enabled the relocation of some of the machines from the central part of the shed to improve access to the machines remaining in that location.

The Manning Men’s Shed Line Book

Mike Whitley has placed a “Line Book” on the wall near the wall map in the Crib Room. The purpose of this book is to record those funny things that members often say. The intention is that these ‘lines’ may be repeated at our monthly BBQ and

members may receive a “gift” for the “funniest” lines.

Computer Access Changes

Access arrangements to the three office computers in the Shed have been modified.

The two computers in the Supervisors office can only be used by the Supervisor Ron Tompkin, the Secretary Kingsley Waterhouse, and the Project Leader Allan Waugh each of whom have their own Logon ID and Password. Members will no longer be able to log onto these computers.

The computer in the Crib Room is now set for use by Asset Leader Eric Goddard who has his own Logon ID and Password, and other Members who will be able to logon using a common Login ID and Password.

Access to the Shed Administration files has been restricted to those who have their own Login ID and Password. Members will still be able to access the internet from this computer.

Please note that the issues we were having with intermittent access to the internet have finally been sorted out and members should no longer have any difficulties.

Paul Moran Washes Down

Paul Moran has washed down the old power hacksaw out the back of the Shed to remove the rust. The previously but rusted solid moving parts have been oiled with WD40 and are now back in working order

Paul Moran and Poppy (right) with the “Clean Machine”

David Winslade dismantled the electric motor from the hacksaw, and after cleaning it, has revarnished the stator windings. He has re-assembled, re-painted, and re-tested the motor and it is now is working like new! Paul has started to repaint the hacksaw.

Eventually the hacksaw and motor will be re-assembled onto its newly painted base and the whole machine will be ready for another 50 plus years of use!

Hugh Resurrects A Chair

Members may recall the chair in bits that had been pulled apart and looked like it was a “dead” cert for the graveyard. Hugh West undertook to resurrect of the chair.

By the laying on of his hands Hugh West has managed to perform a complete resurrection for the chair. Not very long ago, Hugh was contemplating life with loss of use the use of his hands due to severe arthritis in his joints. Just goes to show that you cannot keep a good man down!

The mortice and tenon joints on the seat frame and the back legs of the chair had suffered severe damage due to the use of dowels. These joints had effectively been destroyed when the chair was pulled apart.

Hugh inserted a piece of wood into the back legs, a difficult task due to the different angles involved, and using new timber for the seat frame was able to rebuild the joints and frame to complete the chair. The bottom of the front legs of the chair has a claw and ball foot. The chair seat was re-covered and as you can see the finished chair looks fantastic.

Starting Over Support Programme

This programme is being conducted in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Como to support the SOS Association in providing items for people and families moving into unfurnished accommodation from refuges.

So far, we have made a lot of breadboards for them. However, the SOSA also needs good clean furniture, whitegoods, electrical appliances, homewares, linen and towels, kitchenware, toiletries, and cleaning products.

Representatives from the Rotary Club and SOSA will be at the Shed on 7th March 2018 so if you have anything you can donate please bring it to the shed before then.

Shed Member Brett Goodwin is managing this programme for the Shed so please contact him on 0499 899 691 if you want to donate goods to SOS.

Goods can also be dropped off at the SOS Warehouse at 5 John Street, Bayswater. They can also arrange for a pick up from the Shed or from your home (Mondays and Thursdays 9 am to 6 pm).

Please contact Brett for more information.

Small Cupboards Repainting

Dennis Menzies has brought in some small cupboards to be repainted. The cupboards require sanding to remove peeling paint and to generally clean them up ready for repainting.

Liam, one of the young men involved with the Curtin Mentoring Programme, has commenced sanding the cupboards.

The cupboards will require new locks and handles to be fitted to them and will be donated for use in the SOS programme.

John Takes a Desk Job

Members may recall the rough looking desk that was in the bus garage for a while and may also recall John Paisley spending a lot of time in there giving it a thorough sanding.

John sanding the dismantled desk

After finishing the sanding John undertook to stain the desk to a jarrah finish. John and Allan Waugh recently delivered the desk to the customer who had commissioned us to do the work who was delighted with the finished desk. Good Job John.

Jim Shapes His Legs

Last month we showed Jim Forster with the table top he was making. Continuing the story, we show Jim using the small trim router to shape the edges of the legs he has made for the table. Note again the continued good use of safety gear by Jim.

Allan Boxes Again

No, he has not got out the gloves again! Allan Waugh has made a few boxes over the years, mostly for sale by the Shed.

Allan’s latest project though has been to make a box for his grand-daughter. The box is superbly finished and comes two front latches, a round handle on the lid, and is monographed with his daughter’s initials

Allan Waughs Box

Allan is now working on, you guessed it, another box!

Zac Changes Tack

Zac Li recently told us that he received a distinction for the wooden shelter that he made as part of his university studies. Well done Zac.

Zac has now decided to learn some skills in metalworking and recently spent some time with Mel Taylor learning how to weld.

Alan Has It All Sewn Up

Alan Naber is always making some unusual things. Remember the bike bits he used to make table number holders at his sons Moore and Moore café in Fremantle. Then there was the Kangaroo bike he refurbished. This time Allan has made a table using an old sewing machine frame as the legs. The table top that Alan made in the shed looks like a large bread board with its light and dark pieces of wood.

Raffles

Occasionally we are donated vouchers for meals or groceries which will be raffled to members. Usually these vouchers are valued between $25 and $100. The raffle tickets for these vouchers will be placed adjacent to the sign on computer together with a notice explaining what is being raffled and when the raffle will be drawn. A labelled jar will be provided for the cash payments.
