MANN-FILTER products for hydraulics

MANN+HUMMEL has been a specialist for filtration appli-cations in vehicles, mobileplant and mechanical engi-neering for more than 60years. In the aftermarket ourfilter elements are known andrecognised worldwide underthe MANN-FILTER brand.

MANN-FILTER filter elementsstand for OEM quality andmaximum reliability duringoperation. MANN-FILTER products are now available for a variety of hydraulic appli-cations. They meet the latesttechnical requirements regar-ding filtration technology, quality and installation sizes.

MANN-FILTER hydraulic filters guarantee you:• High x values• High x stability• High dirt holding capacity• High collapse bursting

pressure• Low initial differential

pressure• Universal use• High economy

Application areas

In each system, oil has a certain initial contaminationwhich further increases in thecourse of operation, due to,for example, wear of compo-nents or infiltration with seals. In order to achieve and main-tain the required degree ofpurity, the use of a high qualityfilter is necessary. This isbecause the filtration perfor-mance of the filter elementdetermines the purity of thehydraulic fluid.

Depending on the position inthe system, differentiation ismade between:

Suction filters: A suction filter is fitted in theintake line to protect thepump from coarse dirt parti-cles. Filter media with a metalmesh are usually used. Inorder to avoid cavitation problems in the pump, thepressure drop during filtrationmust not be excessive.

Pressure filters: These filters are fitted directlyin the pressurised line andensure that one or more com-ponents are supplied with oilhaving the required degree ofpurity. Filter media with syn-thetic fibres are usually used,or partly cellulose media.

Return filters: Return filters are fitted down-stream of the hydraulic com-ponents and filter the oil befo-re it flows back into the tank. They have a high dirt holdingcapacity to enable a long ser-vice life and ensure that therequired purity level is main-tained in the tank. The filtermedia consist of syntheticfibres or cellulose.

Test standards and oil purity

MANN-FILTER filter elementsare tested according to thefollowing test procedures:• ISO 2943 Verification of

material compatibility with fluids

• ISO 3968 Evaluation of differential pressure versus flow characteristics

• ISO/DIS 3724 Flow fatigue characteristics

• ISO 16 889 Filter perfor-mance test (multi-pass test)

• ISO 2942 Verification of production quality (bubble-point test)

• ISO 3723 Method for end load test

• ISO 2941 Verification of collapse/burst resistance

Installation criteria for filter selection

When fitting the filter caremust be taken that sufficientspace is available for changingthe filter element.

Definition of the required filter fineness

The components of thehydraulic systems mainlydetermine the filter fineness. In order to ensure reliable service over many years, certain components requireobligatory adherence to adefined oil purity class. Themost sensitive component is critical for the choice of filter medium.

Working filters

The following table lists standard values which canbe used to help select theright filter medium. The re-quired purity class dependson the specific filter surfacearea load (l/min per cm2) andthe external conditions.

Protective filters

Due to reasons of cost the filter fineness of the protectivefilter is always of a coarsergrade than the grade of theworking filter. This is becausethese filters do not contributetowards achieving the oil purity level, but merely pro-vide additional protection for a certain component.

 value and separation efficiency

The value is a useful criterion for the evaluation of filters. It is determined from multi-pass tests acc. to ISO/DIS 4572.

Definition:The value is the ratio of particles of a given sizeupstream of the filter to thequantity of these particlesfound downstream.

x = Nv

Nh

NV = Number of particles > xupstream of the filter

Nh = Number of particles > x downstream of the filter

x = Particle size

Example:If there are 75 particles with asize 3 µm upstream of the filterand downstream of the filterthere is only one such particle, the filter will have the charac-teristic3 > = 75.

The conversion to the separa-tion efficiency is made asfollows:

 = 1–1/x

Comparison of value and separation efficiency (respectively related to adefined particle size)

Filter glossary

Bypass valve

The bypass valve ensures theoil flow to the receiving end,e.g. with a cold-start, thick oil or a clogged filter underextreme operating conditions.

Cavitation damage

Cavitation describes the for-mation of cavities in fluids.Cavitation occurs when localstatic pressure in a fluid sinksbelow a critical value. This critical value usually corres-ponds to the vapour pressureof the fluid.

Important effects of cavitation are:• Cavitation wear• Undissolved gas in the

hydraulic system• Loud noises with a

high frequency• Locally high temperatures

in the fluid• Changing of the resistance

characteristics of hydraulic resistance

Collapse pressure

The failure of the filter throughcollapsing as the liquid flowsfrom the outside to the insideas a result of excessive diffe-rential pressure over the filter.

Deep-bed filters

Dirt particles penetrate the fil-ter medium and are retainedby the structure of the filtermedium. Mainly cellulose andfibre-glass media are used inhydraulic filters. Plastic media(high stability) and metal fibremedia (for temperaturesabove 130° C) are also usedfor special applications. Thedesign of the deep-bed filtercombines the highest filterfineness with high dirt holdingcapacity. The structure beingsimilar to a nonwoven allowsparticle separation in deep-bed filters to take place on thesurface of the filtration medi-um and also for particles topenetrate the filtration medi-um which leads to a signifi-cant increase of the effectivefilter surface area. In contrastto strainers nonwovens haveno "holes" but basically con-sist of labyrinths which catchthe particles. Therefore a defi-ned straining does not takeplace and a wide range ofparticles are retained. Deep-bed filters are replaced at theend of their operational life. They are usually not possibleto clean.

Differential pressure

In a filter this is the pressuredifference between the rawand clean side. Specificationusually given with nominalflow rate without any dirt load.

Dirt holding capacity [g]

The dirt holding capacity of afilter or filter element is themass of the dirt under testconditions which is addeduntil the agreed end of thetest (usually the time when aservice is required).

Dirt load

The amount of dirt particlesthe filter is confronted with.

Fibre-glass medium

Fibre-glass media count assome of the most importantmaterials used today in filtrati-on. During manufacture selec-ted fibres (1 mm – 5 mm longand 3 µm – 10 µm diameter)are processed in a definedcombination. The manufactu-ring process is similar to theprocess of paper manufactu-re. The fibres are bonded witha resin and impregnated. The advantage compared tocellulose paper is that thefibre structure is considerablymore homogeneous leading to larger open pore surfaces. This enables a lower flow resistance.

Filter dimensioning

This mainly depends on thefactors of volume flow, filterfineness, amount of dirt parti-cles and the required servicelife of the filter.

Filter element

This is the component withoutthe housing which is respon-sible for the actual filtrationprocess. The filter mediumcan be made of cellulose,fibre-glass, plastic or metalmesh.

Filter fineness

Regarding filter fineness, a differentiation is made be-tween the used filter materials. For the wire mesh elementsoften used in suction filters, the filter fineness is simplydefined by the mesh size.Wire mesh elements in thefield of hydraulics are usuallyused with a fineness of 20 µmto 200 µm. In order to definethe filter fineness with deep-bed filter elements the valueacc. to ISO 16 889 is used.Typical fineness values forhydraulics are 3 µm, 5 µm, 10 µm, 15 µm, 20 µm and 25 µm.

Filter glossary

Filter surface area

The filter surface area of apleated filter element is a calculated value. As the filtersurface area of the filter in-creases, the flow resistance of the filter element decrea-ses. At the same time the dirtholding capacity increases. However, in a filter element aminimum pleat spacing mustbe maintained so that the filtration surface area can beeffectively used. A furtherincrease of the surface areacan have negative effects.

Flow rate

The flow rate of the pressuri-sed fluid determines the flowresistance in pipelines andhydraulic components.Furthermore, there is a criticalrate dependent on the vis-cosity after which the flowchanges over from a laminarto a turbulent type. In the fieldof hydraulics a turbulent flowis undesired. When the filter isdimensioned the flow rate hasto be observed to enable themost effective separation ofthe contaminant particles. The following flow rates areconsidered to be ideal for ahydraulic system:Intake line: 0.5 – 1.5 m/sPressurised line 30 – 60 bar: 3 m/sPressurised line 60 – 150 bar: 4 – 5 m/sPressurised line > 200 bar: 5 – 7 m/sReturn line: 2 – 3 m/s

Full flow

The complete oil volume flowsthrough the filter.

Full flow filtration

Modern hydraulic systemshave high requirements regar-ding the oil purity level. Thesecan only be met if, as far as is possible, the whole flowvolume passing through thesystem also flows at leastonce through a fine filter ( 20 µm). A filter dimen-sioned in this way is referredto as a filter with full flow filtration.

Hydraulic fluids

The fluid used to transferpower in a hydraulic system is described as a pressurisedfluid. Acc. to ISO 6743 liquidsare divided into mineral oilbased fluids, flame resistantfluids and environmentally-friendly fluids.

In-line filter

Filters fitted in pipes or hoselines.

Medium

Material used to carry out the filtration.

Multi-pass test for oil filters

Defined in ISO 4548-12 withcalibration acc. to ISO 16 889.Mineral oil contaminated witha defined amount of quartzsand (ISO MTD particles) ofvarious sizes is repeatedlysent through the test filter. Themeasure for the retention rateis the value as a ratio of thenumber of particles of a cer-tain size upstream of the filterto those of the same sizedownstream of the filter. This results in the separationefficiency characteristic overtime, the value and the filterservice life. The multi-passtest is standardised acc. toISO 16 889.

Nominal flow rate [l/min]

The nominal flow rate relatesclosely to the geometricdimensioning data of the filter(nominal connection diameter, filter fineness) and the physi-cal characteristics of the liquid to be filtered (density, viscosity).

Nominal pressure [bar, mbar, kPa]

The filter is dimensioned to handle this pressure.

Oil purity

The purity of a hydraulic fluidis defined by the quantity ofsolid particles per millilitre of fluid. The quantity of theparticles is usually measuredwith an automatic particlecounter. The purity level ratingis determined from the quanti-ty of particles of different particle sizes. The particlecount and purity level ratingsfor hydraulic oils is describedin the standard ISO 4406(1999).

Opening pressure [bar, kPa]

The pressure difference whenthe bypass valve is opened, characterised by a definedvolume flow.

Operating pressure [bar, mbar, kPa]

The filter is dimensioned to work at this operating pressure.

Partial flow

A partial flow is diverted be-tween the pump and lubrica-tion points and then imme-diately re-directed to the tankvia a partial-flow filter. Thepartial-flow filter is designedto separate either extremelyfine particles (< 5 µm) or waterfrom the oil.

Filter glossary

Return filter

The return filter is fitted in the return pipe of the fluidsystem and serves to filter thehydraulic fluid before it returnsto the tank. This filter offersthe best solution for maintai-ning the system cleanness.

Separation efficiency [%]

Ratio of the dirt particles retained by the filter to the dirt particles added.

Separation efficiency, absolute

In one flow through the filter99 % of the particles of agiven size are separated.Example: Particles of the size15 µm are 99 % separated in one flow through the filter. The separation efficiency is 15 µm absolute.

Separation efficiency, fractional [%]

The separation efficiency for a given particle size.Determined by a multi-passtest.

Separation efficiency, nominal

In one flow through the filter50% of the particles of agiven size are separated.Example: Particles of the size15 µm are 50% separated inone flow through the filter. The separation efficiency is 15 µm nominal.

Spin-on element (filter)

A filter element which ischanged after a certain opera-ting time or when a certainflow resistance is reached. The soiled filter element mustbe disposed of according tothe environmental regulations. Most deep-bed filters arespin-on filters.

Solid particles

Particles suspended in thefluid which do not chemicallybind to the fluid are conside-red to be solid particles. In thefield of hydraulics particlesfrom a size of approx. 1 µmare of interest. Particle sub-stances include metals, ela-stomers, silicon, cinders ortextiles.

Suction filter

A suction filter fitted in ahydraulic circuit ensures thatthe pump is only driven withoil that is filtered. Suction filtra-tion, however, is disadvan-tageous for mobile plantapplications because the riskof cavitation damage is highwith fluids of high viscosity(e.g. caused by low tempera-tures). Therefore suction filtersshould only be used wherethere is a design requirement.

Surface-type filters

Contaminant particles collecton the surface of the filter element. The design of thesurface-type filter is such thatthe pore size (gap) is con-sistent and therefore particlesof a certain size can be almostcompletely retained. These filters, however, have a smalldirt holding capacity whichconsiderably shortens theirservice life compared to deep-bed filters. Surface-type filtersare manufactured from thinfabric mainly with metalstrands (strainer filter). Gap-type filters are also surface-type filters.

Viscosity

The dynamic viscosity is ameasurement of the thicknessof the medium to be filtered. The kinematic viscosity is theratio of the dynamic viscosityof the medium to its density.

Volumetric flow

This is the volume of the fluidwhich flows through a definedcross-section within a unit oftime. The volumetric flow isgenerated by the pump. Theusual unit is: l/min character:Q or qv

Wire mesh

Filter elements with a metalmesh medium are less ex-pensive and often used as areusable solution in protectivefilters, suction filters or returnfilters. Various mesh types are used depending on therequirements (fineness, pres-sure, dynamics) such asDutch-twilled mesh, plainweaved mesh or also singleplain Dutch weave mesh. Wire mesh elements arealways surface-type filterswhich means that they aresoiled quicker than filterswhich use a replaceable element. During regenerationit must be taken into accountthat elements finer than 40 µm can only be cleaned in an ultrasonic bath.
