The book consists of 65 black-and-white photographs of her three

children, all under the age of 10. Many of the pictures were taken at

the family's remote summer cabin along the river, where the children

played and swam in the nude. Many explore typical childhoodthemes (skinny dipping, reading the funnies, dressing up, vamping,

napping, playing board games) but others touch on darker themes

such as insecurity, loneliness, injury, sexuality and death.

Man believes these photos to be

natural through the eyes of a

mother, since she has seen her

children in every state: happy, sad,

    playful, sick, bloodied, angry

    and even naked.

Dawoud BeyDawoud Bey said both he and

his work are products of the

attitude, if youre not part ofthe solution, youre part of the

    problem. This philosophy

    significantly influenced his

    artistic practice and resulted in

a way of working that is both

    community-focused and

    collaborative in nature.

    Bey shows how a community

    of people defines themselves

    at a particular historicalmoment.

    "Family Pictures and Stories",

Weems has said, "I use my own

    constructed image as a vehicle

    for questioning ideas about the

role of tradition, the nature of

    family, monogamy, polygamy,

    relationships between men and

    women, between women and

    their children, and between

women and other womenunderscoring the critical

    problems and the possible

    resolves."
