The PCU Centre is truly a place that has something for everyone! This newly built multiplex in Portage la Prairie, MB houses Manitoba’s largest wave pool, two NHL-sized arenas, a fully equipped fitness centre, meeting/convention rental spaces and an indoor walking track.

Shindleman Aquatic Centre is an indoor leisure/wave pool which also includes six 25-metre swim lanes, a lazy river, water geysers, tots pool area, zero beach and ramp entry, a 212-foot waterslide, a 14-person hot tub, on-site change rooms and lockers.

Physical Education ProgramOur all trampoline playing courts offers a variety of activities for everyone to enjoy. Fitness participants can feel the burn at Sky Zone’s original SkyFitness class, which combines advanced calisthenics and a three-dimensional cardio and strength training program.SkyFitness encourages a healthy mixture of fitness and fun. This is a great way to change up your normal Physical Education class - a great activity for all school aged groups to build stamina and core strength!

Applied Physics ProgramAt Sky Zone, we combine physical activities with education programs too. What better place to learn the basic laws of physics while jumping on trampolines? Ever wonder what makes you jump so high on a trampoline? Or what keeps you moving? Here at Sky Zone, we think of that all the time!!

Starting this winter 2015, we will be introducing a program in which teachers can incorporate the Manitoba curriculum for grades 7 and 8 of applied physics and mathematics. We call it “The Bounce Challenge”. Our trained staff will direct your students at 4 hands-on experimental stations on our trampolines. We will guide participants to complete several tasks that will help them understand Newton’s laws of motion. We will also provide the teachers with instructions on how to prepare the students for the challenge prior to coming to Sky Zone and also give them sample questions for their students once they complete their tasks. Our program will teach the basic physical properties of matter, energy and motion.

Join us this winter for a new and exciting way to learn physics!

Boys Taking the Dance Spotlight

W ell known for providing some of the best dance

training across Canada, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) School has coached students to exceptional heights, many with the potential to embark on international careerws in dance. Under the same roof as the RWB Company and the RWB School Professional Division, the RWB School Recreational Division gives dancers of all ages and abilities a chance to train in this exciting environment. Always known for producing budding dance talent, the boys’ program at the RWB School is one that has gained significant momentum in recent years. “We found that there was an interest in boys-only dance classes for

students at a young age,” said Kelly

Bale, Principal of the RWB School

Recreational Division. “For our

youngest dancers – their abundance

of energy thrives as they explore

movement, coordination and rhythm

in fun, adventure-like classes.”

As attendance numbers are typically higher for girls heading to the ballet studios, RWB School offers an incentive program for boys’ tuition. Tuition per full-year class runs at $80 for young boys until the age of 16, and includes their costuming for the year-end recital. “The boys’ incentive program was brought in to help reduce barriers for boys to engage in dance and as a result we’ve seen greater gender equality in our

student body,” shares Bale.

The RWB School offers classes for boys as young as age 3 with the introductory program, Movers and Shakers. Following the initial year, boys classes begin with Mighty Movers (age 4 and 5), Power Movers (age 6 and 7) and at age 8, they graduate into the art form best known at the Winnipeg dance school, ballet. With RWB School Recreational Division receiving the 2015 Consumer Choice Award for Best Dance School in Winnipeg, prospective students are encouraged to take note of registration dates as classes fill quickly.

A ssiniboine Park is a hub of year-round activity, a joyful gathering place

in the heart of Winnipeg, and an urban oasis that offers a much-needed escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. It is home to popular attractions like the Assiniboine Park Zoo, a first-class art gallery at the Pavilion, the lush Assiniboine Park Conservatory, and one-of-a kind Leo Mol Sculpture Garden. The Park’s wide-open green spaces, breathtaking gardens, Nature Playground, and recreational opportunities encourage people to get outdoors and be active.

With 400 acres and 1,500 animals, Assiniboine Park is also Winnipeg’s premier destination for learning about nature, wildlife and conservation.

“Children have a natural affinity with animals and nature that should be encouraged and nurtured,” said Scott Gray, Director of Programming for the Assiniboine Park Conservancy, the organization responsible for the operation of the both the Park and Zoo. “At Assiniboine Park and Zoo we have a unique opportunity to deliver meaningful and memorable experiences that feed their curiosity while inspiring them to take positive actions to protect wildlife and wild places.”

Major projects completed in recent years, such as the Qualico Family Centre, Nature Playground, and Journey to Churchill exhibit, have created opportunities for new educational programs at the Park and Zoo.

For example, Journey to Churchill – which opened in July 2014 – has inspired an entirely new selection of programs for grades seven through 12 focused on polar bears, the ecology of northern Manitoba,

polar bear conservation and research, and sustainable development in a changing

climate. Programs for students in younger grades explore biodiversity and the

ingenious physiological adaptations that plants and animals have made to survive in

the north.

Another new Zoo exhibit, the McFeetors Heavy Horse Centre,

opened in the summer of 2015. The exhibit will provide opportunities

for students to journey back to a time in our

province’s history when heavy “horse-

power” was relied on in pioneer-era industries

such as agriculture, forestry, mining and road

construction. For children who have never experienced rural life,

this will be a memorable experience.

“No other venue in Manitoba

can offer such a diversity of experiences

in one location,” said Gray.

“Visitors can discover

their inner animal at the

Zoo and grow their knowledge about

the world of plants at the Conservatory. Art and culture thrive in

our galleries and gardens and at the heart of the Park lies an amazing nature play

space.”

Assiniboine Park offers a diverse selection of curriculum-linked, interdisciplinary

programs for students in Kindergarten through Grade 12. All programs

incorporate learning objectives in science with connections to arts, culture, language, social studies and more. Most

programs include hands-on activities and encourage different styles of learning

through story-telling, music, verbal presentations, tours and team work.

Programs are available year-round.

Adrenaline Adventures

Adrenaline Adventures is a

unique outdoor adventure

park featuring year-

round activities for those of all ages

and activity levels, including cable

wakeboarding, a high-ropes course

with three zip-lines, two paintball

courses, beach volleyball, snow

tubing, snowboarding terrain park,

and much more.

For those seeking an adventure, our 55-foot-tall high-ropes course offers a variety of challenges and thrills. Climbers, who are harnessed in and attached at all times, may choose from eight climbing walls, including rock climbing, a rope wall, ladders, cargo nets and more. The course’s three towers let participants swing to and fro, offers tightropes, floating platforms, and a challenging obstacle course. Once the top is reached, three zip-lines take climbers to the ground, making for an exciting finale to the course. We are Canada’s only full-size cable wakeboarding system, which is extremely quiet and environmentally friendly. For those just starting out, two smaller cable systems are available where instructors can provide one-on-one attention to beginners. Play on our exhilarating paintball courses! In the winter season, you can take on our specially groomed snow-tubing hills. We have several lanes open for a “no skills, just thrills” time and a tow lift to take you back up to the top so you can save your energy for the fun stuff!

Our massive clubhouse features a full-service restaurant and lounge on the second level and a concession stand on the main level for all your food and beverage needs.

exciting interactive exhibits that explore the way food is produced including modern farming, science and technology that provide healthy, sustainable food for Manitoba, Canada and the world. The Centre is located at the University of Manitoba’s Glenlea Research Station, South of Winnipeg, off Highway 75.

A variety of day-long programs are available for K-12 students. These workshops explore curriculum-related science and social science topics, not limited to grade 10 “Food from the Land”, electricity, water systems, environment, ecosystems, animals and plants. Programs include different hands-on activities ranging from a dairy tour to baking bread, testing water samples to making ice cream. Take your students to the Dress Rehearsals at the Centennial Concert Hall for only $12 per ticket!

Thursday, November 19, 2015, 7:30 pm Thursday, April 21, 2016, 7:30 pm

From the famous overture to the final glorious ensemble, Mozart’s comic opera sparkles with intelligence and wit.

A faithful retelling of one of America’s most celebrated works of literature by one of America’s most celebrated composers.

Student Night at the OperaEvery year over 2,000 students attend the final dress rehearsals of Manitoba Opera’s main-stage productions through the Student Night at the Opera (SNO) program. SNO enables students to experience the power of live opera at the greatly reduced price of just $12 per ticket. These fully staged productions at the Centennial Concert Hall feature world-class singers, along with the Manitoba Opera Chorus, and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.

This November Manitoba Opera’s 43rd season will open with Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. This glorious comic tour-de-force of manners, love, politics, and class showcases the composer at his best. From the famous overture to the final glorious ensemble, Mozart’s music sparkles with intelligence and wit. The Marriage of Figaro will be sung in Italian with projected English translations.

Closing the season in April 2016 is a Manitoba Opera premiere of the literary classic, Of Mice and Men. This is a faithful retelling of John Steinbeck’s tragic tale of George and Lennie, two itinerant ranch workers in 1930s California in pursuit of a simple dream: to own a small house and farm of their own. The opera was composed by the revered American composer Carlisle Floyd, who also wrote the libretto. Floyd takes this powerful and tragic story and infuses it with music that is at once dramatic and striking, but also haunting and lyrical. Of Mice and Men is a heartbreaking testament to the bonds of friendship. It will be sung in English with projected titles.

To book tickets to Student Night at the Opera or for more information, contact the Education and Outreach Coordinator at 204-942-7470 or [email protected]

LaserTopia truly is the

perfect place for fun!

Come and enjoy the

only laser tag facility

in Winnipeg that

offers over 4,500 square feet of

pure FUN…on two levels! It just

isn’t laser tag unless you can play

on two levels – it is so much more

fun! If you’ve never played laser tag

at LaserTopia, you have to try it.

Our arena is set in an Indiana Jones

theme, with floor-to-ceiling hand-

painted walls, filled with plants that

light up the black light arena. Up

to 32 people can play at the same

time, and we run games every 15

minutes.

We have entertained thousands of

people from ages six to 90 years

old, so if you are looking to book

a group, or just coming in with a

few friends, come give us a try.

We also offer an amazing arcade,

complete with two lanes of glow-in-

the-dark mini bowling, the Typhoon

Experience (you have to try this

two-seat ride – with 10 rides to

choose from, it’s like being on a

roller coaster!), Laser Frenzy Maze

(this is our “jewel heist” attraction:

when the game begins, laser beams

appear and you have to go over

and under them without the laser

beam touching you!), racing cars,

racing bikes, temple run, wheel of

fortune, NBA basketball, skeeball

and so much more. We also offer a

full concession, and our redemption

counter is out of this world!

We can accommodate groups from

10 to 250 people. LaserTopia has

been host to hundreds of school

groups, and once they’ve played

here, they can’t wait to return. If

you’re looking for an outing with

your classmates, or having your

graduation, look no further. We

offer it all at LaserTopia! When

you bring your class to LaserTopia,

teachers play for free!

Teachers, don’t forget: this place

is not just for kids – many faculty

come to play and really enjoy

themselves. You don’t need to

know how to play. We have a

really cool briefing room where

you watch a fun two-minute video

explaining the rules of the game

and the equipment you will play

with. We also have game marshals

to assure a fun, safe environment,

so you can leave the kids behind

and come play with your colleagues

if you like.

Call us to book an event. We

will even open our doors early,

providing you have at least 20

people playing laser tag.

We look forward to seeing

you at LaserTopia!

There is a hidden treasure

in Winnipeg. A place that was

made before

Manitoba. A place

that, at the time of

its construction,

was considered

by the people

of Red River to

be the greatest

undertaking they’d

ever been witness

to. It was to be the

largest home ever

built here, and

today continues to

stand as the largest

oak log structure in

North America.

Indeed, the convent built by and for the Sisters of Charity of Montréal – commonly known as the Grey Nuns – would

stand the test of time to become Winnipeg’s oldest building, its oldest home. If it was considered massive in the late 1840s (it measures 100 feet by 40 feet with two full storeys, a basement and usable attic), with the progress of time and in relation to newer constructions, it came to be lovingly referred to as “la petite maison blanche” – the little white house.

Today, the Grey Nuns’ Convent stands nestled between two newer and much more imposing buildings. Set back from Taché Avenue and sheltered – hidden – by a canopy of large elm trees, the little white house is now home to Le Musée de Saint-Boniface Museum.

From the very beginning, the little white house’s doors were always open. In fact, the Grey Nuns were known to refuse no one. In solidarity with that tradition, Le Musée de Saint-Boniface Museum remains open to the public year-round and can be booked for special programming, private functions or events.

Our specialty school programs, created in line with provincial curricula, bring students into a world of discovery and hands-on activities designed to deepen their understanding and appreciation for history, with a particular focus on French-Canadian and Métis

contributions to the development of Manitoba. Let them try their hand at construction techniques, feel the weight of hauling water on their shoulders, figure out how to assemble a Red River Cart, or even bake traditional treats! Also explore the museum with our friendly guides, who can help you and your students discover our impressive collection of regionally and nationally significant artifacts, including the largest collection of Louis Riel’s belongings.

Schools programs are offered Tuesdays through Thursdays from September to April inclusively. In June and May, these programs are available Monday to Friday. Please call or email the museum for more detailed information.

Close to 20,000 people visit Winnipeg’s oldest building every year, whether by guided tour, as independent learners, for catered meetings or boutique shopping. With a national reputation as an excellent steward to a collection of over 30,000 artifacts, Le Musée de Saint-Boniface Museum – housed in the little white house – is anything but small. Maybe it’s time you made your way to this hidden treasure at 494 Taché Avenue.

Our main priority is to deal with all calls and emails as quickly as possible (same day service). We understand our customers’ needs and we do everything possible to exceed their expectations.

Tony’s fleet of buses continues to grow, and for those very special occasions (i.e. weddings, anniversaries, graduations and more), inquire about our limousine-style buses. Our limousines can be viewed online or in person. Tony’s was featured in the 2015 Wonderful Wedding Show, as well as in Fine Lifestyles magazine. Although our office is closed in the evenings and on weekends, we are always available by cell phone.

AROUND THE WORLD WITH MANNY TUBA

Grades 1–3

ORCHESTRA GAMESGrades 4–6

Every season, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra (WSO) presents educational programs to more than 40,000 students from nursery school all the way to high school.

Incorporating the WSO’s educational programs into your lesson plan is a great way to invigorate students’ music education. It exposes them to live orchestral performances and meets the recommended music criteria of the Manitoba Curriculum. Plus, the WSO makes music fun and exciting with musicians who are passionate about music education.

The smallest of music fans can participate in Nursery Notes, which introduces preschool children to the concepts of rhythm and melody. Students in Grades 1 to 3 will discover a magical world of great music enhanced by visual entertainers and plenty of surprises in Musical

Discoveries. The Adventures in Music program is the musical event of the year for more than 15,000 Manitoba students in Grades 4 to 6. This exciting program includes opportunities for students and teachers to perform with the WSO. Lesson plans and teacher study guides are provided for Adventures in Music to support student and teacher engagement and preparation. Pricing for these programs begins at only $6.25 per student.

Middle and high school students can attend a matinee performance of the WSO, where they will learn about orchestral music through a pre-rehearsal chat, an open rehearsal with the orchestra, a full performance of a symphonic work, and a final question and answer session with the conductor. Teachers can also bring students to a full concert performance for as little as $17, including a pre-concert chat. Ask us about backstage tours!

Lower Fort Garry National Historic SiteEnter through Lower Fort Garry’s massive gates, where colourful characters from the past welcome you as they sweep you into their world.

This is where firsts happen.

This is the site where the first of the numbered treaties was made between the Crown and the area’s First Nations, creating a gateway to settlement in the west. It’s also home to Western Canada’s first prison, first asylum for the mentally ill and first training facility for the storied North-West Mounted Police.

Explore beautifully restored stone heritage buildings at this intact Hudson’s Bay Company fur trade centre on the banks of the Red River. Hear the blacksmith’s hammer, see and touch furs and barter a trade in the sales shop. Step inside the past at The Big House, where servant and sophisticate both share their worlds.

Enjoy two-hour curriculum-based tours with students, and after you’ve worked up an appetite, it’s time to prepare your ration of bannock – from quern to hearth. Discover the delicious history of chocolate with your own heritage chocolate workshop or dress up as members of the North-West Mounted Police and practice your drills!

This summer, enjoy new family-oriented programming seven days a week. Try your hand at daily life on the prairies or tie on an apron and prepare your own tallow candles from scratch. Time for a break? Take a seat at tiny tables where tiny tea sets and tiny costumes await for a pint-sized tea party in the Big House.

The Forks National Historic SiteFor 6,000 years, The Forks has been a meeting place situated at the junction of the mighty Red and Assiniboine rivers. It is where Western Canada’s story begins and where travellers, settlers and Aboriginal peoples have passed through, bringing their trade, their transportation and their tales.

Today, The Forks is still Winnipeg’s meeting place, offering year-round activities and attractions for the whole family that inspire, educate and pay tribute to the history that shaped it.

Kids from two to 12 can head to the Variety Heritage Adventure Park. Scale the walls of Fort Gibraltar, ride a Red River cart, or hop aboard The Countess of Dufferin and imagine yourself traveling across the sunny prairies. Then

join us for History Bites, a half-hour history adventure.

Take a 6,000-year journey with a Parks Canada costumed interpreter and uncover what lies beneath your feet. Learn the fate of the four fur-trading posts and hear the epic stories behind this meeting place.

And finally, it’s a high-tech history hunt! Do you have what it takes to solve a history mystery at The Forks? Using GPS technology and a self-guided booklet, solve the clues and find the hidden geocache.
