Jamie Meares OF Furbish Studio mixes and matches like a rock star. Her outrageously playful and flamboyant style has graced the pages of Lonny, Elle Decor, People Magazine, and Real Simple to name a few. When some of our designs made their way to her sassy shop in Raleigh, North Carolina we knew we had to schedule a play date. Watch the video for a peek inside our visit to the Furbish Head-quarters and whip out the notepad because Jamie lets us in on her not to miss, expert design tips.

J A M I E ’ S C H E AT S H E E T • FOR SMALL SPACES, CHOOSE MULTI-FUNCTIONAL, DOUBLE DUTY FURNITURE.

• TREAT ANIMAL PRINTS AS NEUTRALS.

• WHEN CHOOSING LARGE-SCALE ART FOR OVER A SOFA, A GOOD RULE TO FOLLOW IS THE RULE OF THIRDS. THE PIECE SHOULD BE AT LEAST 2/3 THE LENGTH OF THE SOFA.

• A PILLOW WITH A WHITE BACKGROUND WILL KEEP A DESIGN FEELING FRESH AND CRISP ESPECIALLY WHEN PAIRED WITH BRIGHT, OVER-THE-TOP PRINTS.

• CONTRAST PIPING IS GREAT FOR HIGHLIGHTING INTERESTING LINES IN A PIECE OF FURNITURE.

• WHEN MIXING AND MATCHING, PLAY WITH SCALES TO BALANCE A LOOK.

Today the faux bamboo look, characteristic of Chinoiserie flair, is notable in everything from colorful chandeliers to embellished coffee tables and appears in many decorating styles from glamorous Hollywood Regency to serving as accent pieces in traditional and even mid-century modern spaces. It is a highly recognized detail in furniture design, with roots along the Silk Road that gives a subtle nod to the cultural importance of globalization and the beautiful effects it can have on art and design.

F U N FAC T SImported goods resulting in the trade between East and West began to in-creasingly influence European design during the 18th century. By the 19th century this route had been dubbed the Silk Road by Ferdinand von Richthofen, a German geographer and scientist.

Many including the likes of English designer Thomas Chippendale and the King of France, Louis XIV, began to embrace Eastern stylistic elements, also known as Chinoiserie, as it blended easily with the rococo or “late Baroque” style.

The whimsical and playful nature of Chinoiserie chic including the cabriole leg, associated with the “ball and claw foot” or “Queen Anne style” and faux bamboo detailing grew in popularity all over Western Europe from Brighton’s Royal Pavilion, designed by architect John Nash, to the gilded Palace of Ver-sailles.

American faux bamboo furniture can most famously be attributed to 19th century, New York based, R.J. Horner & Company. R.J. Horner pieces are highly sought-after in the antique market due to their ornate craftsmanship and rare availability.

Through the Years:

1 9 6 0 ’ S : V O D K A M A R T I N IThis classic cocktail became a 60’s sensation when it debuted on the big screen via a savvy spy by the name of Bond…James Bond. Never before had a martini seen so much action! “Shaken, not stirred” will never go out of style.

1 9 7 0 ’ S : T E Q U I L A S U N R I S EThe origins of this colorful concoction can be traced back to the infamous restaurant in Sausalito, California known as “The Trident” in the early seventies. Janis Joplin was considered a regular and the Rolling Stones held post concert parties at the waterside locale. How’s that for groovy?

1 9 8 0 ’ S : L O N G I S L A N D I C E D T E AIn a decade of “bigger is better,” it only seems appropriate that this tea colored tipple gained popularity. The indulgent drink boasts five different alcohols and goes hand in hand with big hair, bright fashion and mega pop stars.

1 9 9 0 ’ S : C O S M O P O L I TA NThis stylish cocktail made quite a come-back in the mid 1990’s when it became the go-to drink of Carrie Bradshaw in the TV hit series “Sex and the City.” City girls across the globe coveted the “Cos-mo” as much as their shoe collection.

2 0 0 0 ’ S : M O J I T OThe new millennium saw a return of artisanal creations like the minty, muddled mojito. Hand crafted drinks became all the rage due to their use of fresh herbs and garnishes. This foodie inspired libation brought a sophistica-tion to cocktailing that will hopefully last well into the future!

QUEEN

39

ONLINE

• You wouldn’t display unflattering photos at home, why would it be any different for social media?

• Mind your P’s & Q’s — always remember to say thank you.

• Give credit where credit is due.

• Give more compliments than complaints.

• Your readers follow you for a reason, give the people what they want!

• Update means up-to-date. Post your little heart out.

AT HOME

• You don’t have to have white linens. A colorful piece of fabric goes a long way.

• A monogram makes anything feel more special, from your napkins to your silver.

• You don’t have to buy the whole set of china to have a beautiful table. We love putting just the salad plates on top of our every day white dinnerware to zhush up the table.

• Fresh flowers and a well thought out playlist will make your home more inviting. We love Buena Vista Social Club and Sam Cooke.

• Always wear something that you are comfortable in when you are hosting —you’ve got to be able to move! Ballet flats can easily be dressed up when paired with your favorite costume jewelry.

• Avoid watered down drinks by using frozen fruit instead of ice cubes.

LIZ JOY

When entertaining, I want my guests to leave their crazy days behind them at the door and enter into a relaxing feel good atmosphere. I do this with good music, something like Jack Johnson and/or Bob Marley in the beginning of the night to unwind from the day, and a good 80s mix to dance to at the end of the night.

Favorite Cocktail: It’s nice to serve a signature cocktail. I love pinkberry lemonade which is basically spiked lem-onade with fresh blueberries!

Take your friends up on their offers to help—sometimes it’s just not possible to do it all. If someone else wants to help guests with their coats, make a few cocktails, or take the dessert out of the oven, wonderful. Just say yes!

Favorite Cocktail: My favorite cocktail is a French 75. I can’t resist anything with champagne!

shoandtellblog.com

NICOLE GIBBONS

Aim to have your preparations complete at least a half hour before your party is set to start. You never want to be running around getting your last minute details in order while your guests sit and wait. It’s also a good idea to hire help for things like mixing drinks and serving food if you can. It’ll free up your time to mingle and engage with your guests.

Favorite Cocktail: I love a good white sangria in the summertime. It’s so fruity and refreshing and I like that it’s lighter on alcohol content than other cocktails. For a fresh twist add tropical fruits like pineapple and mangoes and use a sparkling wine instead of a typical still varietal.

sohautestyle.com

NIKKI RAPPAPORT

Before hosting a party, I place all the platters, trays, and boards (they don’t have to all match!) that I’m going to use out on a table and put a sticky note on each with the food that will be served on it. It helps me plan my menu and confirm that I have a place for everything.

Favorite Cocktail: This sum-mer my favorite cocktail is a Moscow Mule. It’s cool and refreshing...perfect for a hot backyard BBQ!

LINDSAY MARIE

No need to be a master mixologist to throw a great soiree. Take some of the pres-sure off by serving one or two signature cocktails. Be sure to keep your bar well-stocked for guests that might be inclined to make their own.

Favorite Cocktail: Dark n’ Stormy

thepursuitofstyle.com

HANNA SEABROOK

Plan the party that allows you to be yourself. You set the tone for your guests so running around, setting up, or preparing the food distracts from the relaxed atmosphere you want to create. Plan and prepare ahead so when they walk in the door you are just as much a part of the party as the drinks, dishes, and decorations.

Favorite Cocktail: The Edge-wood from Holeman & Finch Public House, Atlanta GA

Serve apps truffled- a drizzle of truffle oil or salt or truffled honey on asparagus, deviled truffled eggs, drizzle oil on cheese, truffled popcorn! Not all oils are created equal. This one is my favorite, La Tourangelle White Truffle Oil.

Favorite Cocktail: The “JENESEQUA” - top shelf vodka, fresh juiced grapefruit, splash of St. Germain and splash of soda.

jenesequa.com

CHEDVA KLEINHANDLER

Make it your own! I always like to add a little personal twist to my tabletop. It’s usually a tablecloth I’ve sewn or a personal fabric pick that I’ve draped over the table. It’s easy and sets off the mood and color scheme for the entire party!

Favorite Cocktail: Spiked Lemonade

roomsandwords.com

BAILEY MCCARTHY

Your guests’ fun is directly proportional to yours, so un-less you enjoy doing it, don’t stress over perfection. Hand each guest a fuerte margarita as they arrive, and things get pretty entertaining pretty quickly. Also, people love a cheese tray, but no one wants to look like a fatty. Pre-slice your selections into bite size portions so no one is forced to get aggressive with a wheel of brie- unless that’s their bliss.

I love to have little napkins made in honor of the event. Add fun art or a foil stamp and you have just added a person-al touch. Also, I love making flower arrangements. Whole foods is my favorite flower resource – inexpensive and with a great selection!

Favorite Cocktail: The San Telmo (a nod to Buenos Aires’ San Telmo neighborhood)

Adhere to the mantra of overdoing four things; a party should always have an excess of food, refreshment, music and toilet paper.

Stay neutral with large pieces. A clean foundation will allow you to slowly collect a variety of accent pieces that genu-inely reflect your personal style. Don’t feel boxed into a particular design aesthetic, be it modern, vintage, contem-porary, etc. Find bits and pieces for your home —of any genre or era—that speak to you. Your home should tell a story of who you are.

As a lawyer, I’m a far cry from a style expert, but my best “tip” is this: resist the urge to decorate immedi-ately upon moving into a new space. I’ve found that living in and acclimating to new surroundings—for three, six, or even twelve months—before making significant changes allows me to the opportunity to get to know the space better, which in turn informs my renovations, styling, and decorating choices.

My husband and I used some vintage glasses we found from a flea market as well as our amazing stemware from our wed-ding. We like mixing old and new finds and we love experimenting with old and new drinks!

BEAR’S DINNER PARTY FOLDING TABLE OSTERVILLE, MA

For those who struggle with how to combine color and pattern, I suggest looking to your wardrobe for inspira-tion.   It’s no surprise when people come into my home their immediate reaction is “this is so you!” as I think the way you live and the way you dress are the building blocks of your style DNA.

Fabrics are used to add color and drama to spaces. When mixing fabrics try to keep it to 3-5 fabrics, and make sure they do not compete with with one another.  Using a floral, stripe and geometric together can make a great combo.

Invest in original art! Even if it’s a vintage find from a flea market, original art will set your design apart from the rest and can be a great inspiration in a new project!
