In a magical way, on the group forming day, 5 different but yet matching personalities found their way together, as they ‘randomly’...or instinctively got linked as a group. I remember, even through our first discussion we ended up amazed to see that no matter our recent link up or our different ideas, notions, points and different skills, our vision was quite the same, reflecting an amazing chemistry between us. Each one’s ideas and plans inspired the other to develop these sequences of thoughts, leading to incredible conclusions. This diversity helped us to have a glimpse even of our overall project, within just the first hour of our meeting, which also got proven by the end of the project, as we kept following the same path of our very first vision.

Our main vision for re-defying the Mediterranean was to highlight and protect its ba-sic characteristic, which is rich geographical relief and the mesmerizing beauty of its nature. Bringing the architecture into the topic, focusing on the coasts we detected man-made structures that were actually creating damage to the ecosystems there due to the irrational design which followed rather conventional, basic shapes rather than following the simplest instructions, patterns and forms of the nature itself. As we know that everything in nature is based on mathematical codes, while maintaining the simplest of forms that are the most effective while using the least of energy, we tried to go back and get the answers from Gaia herself. And that’s how our journey began...

TORREVIEJA, October 9th__REDEFYiNG THE MEDiTERRANEAN

Our first stop into this exploration was the old port by Torrevieja beach, in which was known as a highly polluted environment. As we went there we immediately could see the problem in front of us. The water was utterly polluted, as u could see the oil spots on the surface, dead fishes and organisms, the sand inside the sea had turned black and still, people were swimming in it!

As we got to the beach as a first step we proceeded to a series of actions. We tried to analyze the ecosystem, investigate it, study the details/functions/codes of nature on the of nature on the elements taken out of this environment by collecting samples.

We wanted to use this tactic in order to begin from the roots and integrate the architecture and let it involve and develop there from the smaller to bigger scale. Cause when you follow nature’s patters, it always works. Finding realistic solutions...

After our exploration, we wanted to find a way to show our findings in a way that the viewer would be able first to get into the atmosphere of the place and understand it and then expose the problems and the way to the solutions. That’s why we came up with an idea of an installation, blending and connecting many compo-nents together.

On our class field trip in El Campello, when it was asked for the teams to develop ideas and intentions for the concept of our project, me and my team decided to take over some rocks in isolation and just observe around, letting the concept come to us by the notions of the en-vironment, rather than us seeking the concept. A lot of noteful findings and realizations were made during that day. Each one sat in isolation and felt the space and the atmosphere, ob-served the several natural and man-made systems around and came up with their own con-clusions and notes. In the end those notes got connected as we shared and compared our results and we found out that there was a connection within all our notes, proving that we had somehow seen and perceived the same things, just in different scales. This way we left the place with lots of food for thought to proceed with our project, dealing with matters of layers of life evolving through different levels of water and life, densities, and systems of flows.

Draft model suggesting the rearrangement of the port structure but following natural, organic shapes following the energetic patterns of nature, rather than conventional, basic and irrational man-made shapes, taking advantage of those patterns for the best circulation of the water inside the structure. The idea is setting a circulation that is going to allow the water enter and exit the structure entirely so that no energy gets stuck inside creating damage, but changing the frequen-cy of the flows so that calmness inside the port is achieved.

By the end of this journey and this semester we take note of amazing observations, exchanges of ideas,

creations and emperical learning that occurred during this course. Looking back, even when the task wasn’t

a finalized project but a sequence of ideas and intentions, it has definitely left us with a much richer and

expanded architectural way of thinking, enhanced skills, lessons of communication and many meaningful

experiences. We had the opportunity to take a break for a little from the technical aspect of a project and

actually go back to its roots and learn how to actually come up, develop and manage a concept, always

taking into account the feeling of the real world and beginning from there, away from the computer screen.

And I think me and my team quite achieved that, we experimented a lot, let ourselves free, being complete-

ly open to this experience and turns out that we made the most of it and also got to actually enjoy the pro-

cess. I truly believe we are supplied with many amazing new qualities to take back to our countries into our

academic path, and I feel really grateful for all the memories and feelings made in this Studio...beyond the

classroom.
