Manhood PeninsulaCircular Cycle Tours
A range of scenic cycle routes usingthe quiet lanes and cycle pathsaround the Manhood Peninsula
Medmerry is one of the stretches of coastline most atrisk of flooding in southern England. Following extensiveconsultation, the Environment Agency recommended inthe 2008 Pagham to East Head Coastal Defence Strategythat managed realignment was the preferred option forMedmerry. This is where new defences are built inlandfrom the coast and new intertidal area is createdseaward of these new defences. This scheme will providean improved standard of protection against flooding forlocal communities. The scheme is due to be complete bySpring 2013.
The Medmerry Managed Realignment scheme will alsohelp create a large area of new wildlife habitat to replaceprotected areas that are being lost elsewhere in theSolent. Carefully designed creeks, islands, saltmarsh, reedbeds, ditches and wet grasslands will provide homesfor rare waterbirds, water voles and many othercreatures and wild plants. Extensive new public rights ofway and permissive footpaths, cycleways and bridlewayswill be created around the site, together with specially-created viewpoints, providing a wonderful quiet amenityfor local people and visitors.
