TODAY’S PROGRAM

Jan 09 — The World Kindness Traveler. Leon Logothetis is a global adventurer, motivational speaker & philanthropist.

“Kindness is the languagewhich the deaf hearand the blind see.”

— Mark Twain

Farewell to 2016December has come and gone, and with it 2016 (good riddance as far as I’m concerned, with Manhattan Beach Rotary being the bright spot in a dreary year), and, lucky for us, our president is still Shannon Ryan (yay for our July 1 fiscal year). As we launch into 2017, I first summarize our last two meetings on December 12 & 19.

Save The DateFeb 06 — Rotary Book Club. We will be Discussing In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson. This month our host will be Charlie Steinmetz.

May 13 — Magic in Giving. Saturday, May 13, 2017 – Magic In Giv-ing at the Manhattan Beach Marriott. Please contact Jordan Holbert or Debby Arnold to volunteer on the committee. This is a great way for new members to get involved.

Holiday JoyFirst, a big shout-out to Dennis Ridge for that Christmas meeting Bul-letin, loaded with colorful photos, featuring the full text of the Night Before Christmas, and closing with the memorable Chris and Shan-non Claus. The meeting itself was reminiscent of President Shannon’s spectacular Halloween meeting, the room once again decked out in holiday mementos, complete with a special visit from Kent Caldwell in a return engagement as Santa Claus.

Erin RothnerPresident Shannon inducted Erin Rothner, with daughter Hana looking on. Erin was sponsored by Russ’ and Erin’s close friend Dan Saks. Erin owns Bloom Design, providing custom window coverings. President Shannon told us that “joining Rotary is a life-altering moment.”

Working Wardrobes Ed Kushins brought us Arnie Bengo of Working Wardrobes, our new-est program beneficiary. Arnie outlined their program, which focuses on getting adults in crisis back to work. February 6 will be the day we bring clean clothes on hangers, as well as accessories, to our meeting to support this program.

Laying EggsAnd then, the annual holiday program, organized by Paul Allman, commenced. Joel Ruben sang Leonard Cohen’s (RIP) Hallelujah. Paul led us on his guitar and nyckelharpa, backed by Sharon Grandinette, Rick Farrell on his bluesy harmonica, and Kathleen Terry. Roger Cox, Larry Johnson, Kathleen and President Shannon read us a poem of Christmas Past. Joel led us in a “Christmaskah” medley. We sang along with songbooks. And then the inevitable happened: The Twelve Days of Christmas, with bathtub rings, laid eggs, swimming swans, leaping lords, milking maids, and worse. Sanity was restored with a Christmas greeting from Madelyn and Wendell Harter, followed by our annual tribute song for our servers, a rousing chorus of Feliz Navidad (and a substantial cash gift).

Los Angeles ZooThe previous week’s meeting was less spectacular but just as inspired.

Lee Walker’s sister Cathy was with us, bringing our speaker with her—John Lewis, the Los Angeles Zoo’s director, introduced by Lee attired in a full-body fox suit, featuring Lee singing Paul Simon’s At The Zoo. The Zoo has 1900 animals representing 331 species, with average annual attendance of 1.6 million and a $20 million budget. It is owned by the City of Los Angeles and supported by the Greater Los Angeles Zoo Association (GLAZA). The Zoo also engages in multiple global con-servation efforts. The focus is not just to see animals but to understand their habitats, and exhibits are being upgraded to that end. Education is also a priority. It is truly a “zoo without borders.” Patrick FardOur Mystery Rotarian was Patrick Fard, a 6-degree black belt who owns the Kyokushin Karate Studio. Patrick was born in the Cradle of Civi-lization, found his passion for karate at age 7, 40 years ago, has been in Manhattan Beach 20 years, and is very proud of his students who have gone on to Masters and PhD degrees at many major universities.

Happy DollarsRecognitions abounded and our happy dollar coffers grew. James Kennedy’s best friend got married. Jason Hearne brought President Shannon a Gingerbread House. Chris Ullman honored his fellow veterans. Nelson Gray invited us to join him on hikes in local moun-tains on alternate Fridays. USC grad Wade Austin had kind words for UCLA basketball. Mark Lipps was grateful for support during his long medical year. Ed Kushins is glad to have married Terry 13 years ago. Rich Ham is sponsoring his youngest son’s wedding on July 9 at the Portofino (sounded like an invitation to wedding crashers to me). Monica Farrell Bringleson had a great trip to Easter Island along with Deb Arnold and Charlie Steinmetz and crew. Dan Saks’ daughter is a neurosurgical nurse at Cedars-Sinai.

El DonnAnd there was still more. We saw slides and heard joyful reports of the Santa Float, the Sandpiper holiday baskets, the City fireworks, the Rose Parade float, Operation Teddy Bear, the senior luncheon, and it kind of takes your breath away (thanks, in order, to President Shannon, Don Redman, Richard Montgomery, Jordan Holbert, Dennis Ridge, and Jan Buike). Mark Burton had the unenviable task, done with aplomb, of boring us to death with a by-laws change allowing us to approve the following year’s Board in February instead of January. And President Shannon was effusive in thanking Donn Ennis for his photos of club meetings and, it seems, virtually every club project or activity. Think about it—he not only takes the pictures, but he can take the pictures because he shows up all the time, everywhere. He’s no mystery Rotarian.

Yours In Rotary,Jim Hallett
