Shakespearean RootsIt was Monday, August 29, 2016, and President Shannon Ryan, follow-ing Jan Buike’s usual kind thoughts for the day, revealed some biographi-cal details about Mystery Rotarian Sue Vogl: Born in Stratford-on-Avon, this Shakespearean writer edited publications at USC for over 20 years (more importantly, she also edited this Club Bulletin for a while). A runner, she was a college friend of Mark Spitz, got her first job as an advertising copywriter at the Indianapolis Star-News, and attended her first Rotary meeting in Danville, Illinois. We’re lucky to have her.

Friendship RootsSpeaking of the Friendship Foundation, Mark Burton told us that he, Mike Matthews and President Shannon recently attended a Foundation (formerly Friendship Circle) event and were very moved by it. Among other activities, they meet every third Friday at Round Table Pizza for birthday parties, starting at 3:30 with the younger kids, followed an hour or so later by the older kids.

German RootsPast President Roger Cox has led our Youth Exchange programs for years, working with District Chair Warren Bobrow of Westchester, and he took this opportunity to introduce our speaker, Les Silverman’s son AJ (with proud mom Angela looking on). AJ, before speaking, hooked up his acoustic guitar and sang George Ezra’s Listen to the Man (“Won’t you listen to the man that’s loving you?”—I wonder if that line worked on German girls). He then told us about “My Year Abroad,” his Music Exchange program in which Maya Luttel came here to be with us and AJ went to Germany, first staying with Maya’s family, while he attended Maya’s high school, the Goethe Gymnasium, while living in the village of Ibbenburen. AJ treated us to a host of scenic slides—his village, house running (ask him what that is), snowboarding in the Alps, classes in Ger-man, food, transportation of all sorts, mountain biking, a 2-week tour of Germany and a 3-week tour of Europe. We met through photos his three host families and his many fellow exchange students from many countries across the world. It was, for AJ, “the greatest year of my life.”

The Roots of PeaceAJ Silverman’s talk was a reminder to us of one of the fundamental basics of Rotary International—people meeting people across national boundaries. We rightly speak proudly of our high profile programs like End Polio Now and Wells Bring Hope. But Rotary has always spent a great deal of money and effort on scholarship and exchange programs. These programs may seem less urgent or less dramatic than the work of many charities, but Rotary has always kept its eye on the ball—by creating relationships on an international level, the urgent and dramatic work can be done. (Countless places on Earth would only let Rotary polio volunteers in because of distrust of anything associated with government.) Trips like AJ’s may seem like something to envy (OK, I admit I’m envious), but they are so much more than that. In many of our lifetimes, we Americans were at war with Germany in perhaps the most terrifying clash in the history of the world. Maya (a double hit with her start in Vietnam) and AJ (a double hit with his Jewish roots) are a gift to us. They not only remind us that our children can live thriving lives after the destruction of war, but also that Rotary, in its quiet way, is doing so much to make sure that every person, of every nation and creed, can thrive in a peaceful world.

Yours in Rotary,Jim Hallett
