Get off the beaten track, see the real Cambodia and experience Khmer culture atits most colourful.
MANGO CAMBODIA is a small but perfectly formed independent tour companybased in the heart of the hidden pearl of Asia, Phnom Penh and running veryspecial Mango Journeys around Indochina. Our team of discerning westernersand inspired locals has designed a range ofBoutique Holidays, Unique Trips,Tours and Detours to enable our clients to explore the very best of Indochina.
Its hard to get a real feel for a country when youre stuck behind the toughenedglass of a minibus windscreen, but not everyone has the time or inclination to set
off on some far-flung adventure, miles away from the nearest air-conditioningunit. Mango offers the chance to do just that on your holidays in Indochina, without compromising your comfort or safety.
All our itineraries are hand-picked - theyre our recommendations based onpersonal experience and taste. Of course we love the temples, the countrysideand beaches - but we believe that the real measure of a country is its people. We therefore endeavour to introduce our clients to a colourful mix of individualsduring all our activities, facilitating real communication and interaction duringyour holiday. You may find yourself chatting with a survivor of the Khmer Rouge,a village chief, a couple of monks or a rice farmer. Its a far cry from justpointing a camera at strangers in fact the cultural exchange is enriching andthe photo opportunities are unique on Mango trips.
If you prefer a Made-to-Measure experience for your holiday, we will discussrequirements with you and recommend the most suitable itinerary, or you mightprefer to pick your own preferences from our innovative Pickage holiday menu.

the past and move towards a bright and positive future. In practicing andpromoting truly responsible tourism over the past four years, Mango has seenencouraging results.
In 2009 Mango began raising funds to support a local-run village school ofEnglish in rural Cambodia, helping to secure the school's future for more thantwo years. Weve contributed towards the building and stocking of the schoollibrary and donated a wide screen television, DVD player and a selection ofDVDs, giving students the opportunity to learn from international resources aswell as their own. Returning Mango clients from Calgary in Canada held afundraiser for the school in their home town. The money raised will go to furthersustain and develop the school.
CCH logoWe support a selection of hand-picked, fully transparent organizations - such asthe Centre for Childrens Happiness which nurture children from disadvantagedbackgrounds. These organizations offer children, many of whom formerly livedon the streets or at the municipal rubbish dump, the chance to receive a goodeducation and to be cared for in a safe, loving home. Some of Mangos clientshave been inspired to sponsor the education of a specific child (or children). They often keep in touch with the kids from overseas via email, sending birthdaygifts to those who might otherwise not get any.
We strive to have a positive influence on the people and communities of
Cambodia. By offering them opportunities and enabling them to develop andimprove their lives, we believe we really can make a difference. By booking withMango, so can you.
Child Safe Network logoMango Cambodia is a proud travel partner of the ChildSafe InternationalNetwork, an organisation consisting of individuals, businesses and groups whostrive to protect children from abuse and prevent them from being placed inabusive situations. As a ChildSafe travel partner we help to protect children fromthe potential negative impacts of tourism. We aim to provide a saferenvironment for children by raising awareness of the issues with our clients andtraining all Mango tour leaders and guides in ChildSafe practises. Our sistercompany, InDevelopment Productions has recently made a film drama aboutsafe migration for the Asia Foundation and the International LabourOrganisation, aimed at discouraging underage girls from seeking domestic workabroad. "Travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep andpermanent, in the ideas of living."-Cambodia may not spring to mind as the most obvious holiday choice; a place toenjoy precious time away from the stresses and strains of everyday life. Archive
news-footage of Khmer Rouge atrocities and Princess Diana tending Cambodianlandmine victims have combined with general preconceptions about what lifemust be like in a "developing" country to make Cambodia the last place somewould even consider as a holiday destination. But prepare to be surprised!Cambodia is developing more quickly than you might imagine! Phnom Penh isnow a vibrant, fascinating city with wide, tree-lined boulevards, luscious parks, alively riverfront, colonial architecture, museums, art galleries, tasteful
monuments and an eclectic mix of wonderful bars, restaurants, hotels and clubs.A handful of sky scrapers is beginning to emerge on the horizon but it's nothinglike on the scale of Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur.....yet! There is something trulyauthentic about this place, something of the "old Asia" that cannot fail to charm.Explore the city in a delightful tuk-tuk or gentile cyclo on your holidays inCambodia. Siem Reap is a thriving town boasting a lot more than temples - there's plentyelse to see and do - and the seaside resorts from Kep through Kampot,Sihanoukeville and Koh Kong offer unspoilt, white-sand beaches, incrediblesunsets and peaceful deserted islands.
If you just want to relax by a pool, have a luxurious spa treatment, dine in agreat, world-class restaurant and chill out in a stylish hotel - maybe even dancethe night away in a lively club - you can do it all in Cambodia. But if you wanthistory, culture , countryside, jungle, elephant rides, trekking and cycle tours onyour holidays in Cambodia they're all within easy reach. Check out our pickagetour menu to see our full range of available activities.
And if you're still not convinced, remember that the most special gift Cambodiahas to offer is its people, whose warm, welcoming smiles greet you at everystep. English is widely spoken and Cambodians really enjoy their guests - theywant you to fall in love with their country even more than we do.Our holidays in Cambodia are designed for independent travellers with enquiringminds. If you're looking for something a bit different to the norm, for a morepersonal experience than you'd get from a large tour company, you've come tothe right place..."All travel has its advantages. If the passenger visits better countries, he maylearn to improve his own. And if fortune carries him to worse, he may learn toenjoy it." -

The best time to visit Cambodia is from November to February when the weather
is good, the heat bearable and its dry. November is a good month to visit as theheat is at a minimum and the landscape still maintains an emerald green fromthe rainy season. This period however is also when most people journey toCambodia and crowds at the temples are rather large. However, if you wantsunshine and perfect blue skies this is the time of year to visit. From March to May is the hottest time of year with temperatures and humidityreaching levels that most tourists find uncomfortable but crowds are at aminimum so on the plus side you will enjoy the main sites all to yourself!
Another excellent time to visit is during the rainy season from June to Mid-October - this is when Cambodia is at its most stunning with beautiful emeraldfields, the temples of Angkor are spectacular with lilies in full bloom in thetemple' ponds and usually there aren't many tourists around. Hotels offer lowseason discounts so it's a good time of year for competitive prices. It does rainduring the day but showers tend to be mid afternoon, early evening for an houror so - thus as long as you time your sightseeing correctly this is not a problem. With our expertise we can help you plan your itinerary accordingly. For people

who don't like the heat this is also a good time to visit as temperatures arelower.

One of the most frequent questions our clients and friends overseas ask us is: 'IfCambodia is Safe?'Cambodia may not spring to mind as the most obvious holiday choice; a place toenjoy precious time away from the stresses and strains of everyday life. Archivenews-footage of Khmer Rouge atrocities and Princess Diana tending Cambodianlandmine victims have combined with general preconceptions about what lifemust be like in a 'developing' country to make Cambodia the last place somewould even consider as a holiday destination.
Recent stories in tabloids about Angelina's 'danger trip' in Cambodia don't help toreassure people that Cambodia is in fact a safe place to travel, thus the answerto the question 'Is Cambodia safe?' is most definitely yes! Of course in the pastthe country was largely inaccessible and a very dangerous place but that was 20years ago!

Today Cambodia is a relatively safe place to travel. The usual diligence should betaken as you would in any capital city in the world but overall most visitors findCambodia safer than places like London, Rome or New York. Here are a few Mango travel tips to help you stay safe:
Bag Snatching: disparity in wealth does make foreigners an attractive target forbag snatchings. Sensible precautions should be taken to avoid opportunistictheft. Be on your guard against pickpockets and bag snatchers. You shouldremain particularly vigilant against theft when using public transportation, including inter-city buses, tuk-tuks and motos. Use safety boxes in your hotel tostore your valuables and only travel with the essentials. Watch your bags andhold on to them in tuks tuks. Especially late at night be vigilant. However if youdo get robbed don't try and resist and just hand everything over.Road Accidents: By far the biggest threat to your safety is traffic accidents. Withappalling drivers and improved roads that allow for faster driving, the rate offatal road accidents is increasing. Always ensure you travel with a safe driver, inan insured vehicle and never travel on intercity roads after dark as this isperilous. At night there are no road lights on intercity roads, trucks and carstravel with no headlights and the road conditions are very dangerous. Refrainfrom using moto-taxis or going on a motorbike with no helmet. And be carefulcrossing the roads as traffic can come from any direction!Landmines: there are an estimated 6 million landmines left in Cambodia from thecivil war. The main tourist areas have now all been cleared and prove no danger.
Most of the landmines are found in the north of the country along the borderwith Thailand and the old Ho Chi Minh Trail. If you travel in the more remoteprovinces in the North East and North West (excluding Battambang town) of thecountry in these remote areas don't stray from the roads and main paths.Food Safety: you shouldn't face any problems eating in established and localrestaurants in the main towns. Ice is fine and so are vegetables and most localfoods. People do often suffer from an upset stomach but this is also a directresult of being in a different country and from the heat etc. rather than the fooditself. Our suggestion is to try local food but avoid market stalls or shacks in thecountryside whilst restaurants with a lot of clientele and which have menus andproper facilities are generally fine.Malaria: This is one of the most asked questions and we cannot offer concreteadvice as we are not doctors or experts. However there is very little or nomalaria at all in Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, Kep and Battambang. Unless you areplanning to stay deep in the countryside in a wooden hut with no mosquito netsetc. then you have very little risk of catching malaria. The only areas I would say
7/30/2019 Mango Cambodia Website Backup
33/108
to definitely take precautions are the remote provinces of Mondulkiri andRatanakiri and the Pailin area. At the end of the day nobody wants to catchmalaria so if you are only traveling for a few weeks it makes sense to takeprecautions.

Increase in Higher Education in Cambodia due to TourismSeptember 17, 2012
Khim Borin, a 26-year-old tour guide by day and law student by night, says he wants to become a
lawyer. But he sometimes has trouble staying awake in class during the high tourist season,
when he spends hours scaling vertiginous temple steps and baking in the tropical sun.
I tell my friends, 'Hit me if you see me falling asleep', he said.
The son of a broken and impoverished household, Mr. Khim Borin worked as a bartender and a
masseur and installed air-conditioners at hotels before becoming a tour guide. He summarizes
his life as 'hard but happy.'
The five universities in Siem Reap currently enroll more than 10,000 students. Most of the
campuses, which are scattered around the town, are quiet during the day but come to life with the
buzz of students' motorcycles as soon as the sun sets.

Background
Mango Cambodia was founded by British scriptwriter Anji Loman Field in the spring of 2006, initially to fill a gap inthe excursion market.
When Anji first arrived in Phnom Penh to work on a BBC drama series, she had never been to a developing
country before. There were so many things I wanted to see and do but I was nervous about travelling alone.
There didnt seem to be any tour companies offering day trips or accompanied excursions. This frustration led to
collaboration with Anjis Cambodian friends, which sowed the first seeds of Mango Cambodia as it is today.
Mangos one-day excursions led on to two day tours and then long
weekend breaks, until gradually the company found itself operating
longer tours. It was a natural progression to set up Mango Cambodia as
an officially registered and fully bonded inbound tour company.
In late 2007 Mango officially launched its Signature, Made-to-Measure
and innovative Pickage holidays. The companys goal is to provide
unique itineraries for people who are interested in more than just
pagodas and statues who really want to connect with the culture,
history, countryside and people of Cambodia.
ITINERARY DESIGN
When designing itineraries, Mango considers how to enable their discerning clients:
7/30/2019 Mango Cambodia Website Backup
50/108
To have adventures but in safety and comfort not too risky but still exciting and intriguing.
To make a real connection with local people, chatting to them about their lives and really getting to
understand their culture and lifestyle.
Not to feel packaged and to (sometimes) be in the only vehicle in the car park!
To learn about the culture, history and politics of the country and its people.
To be travelling with interesting, interested people.
To sample local cuisine that has been hygienically prepared and adapted to the western palate (no claw
or beak in the chicken curry!)
To enjoy a wide variety of experiences and see things that are not on the normal tourist trail.
To stay (where possible) in comfortable, individual boutique accommodation rather than large,
impersonal hotels.
To have opportunities to be hands-on, to actually try their hands at some of the things the locals do such
as harvesting rice or riding an ox cart.
Not to be shepherded into shopping emporiums just because the driver is on commission!

Smiley People - Meet the Mango Team
Anji Loman Field
Founder & Executive Director
Anji Loman Field, the founder of Mango Cambodia, enjoyed a successful
television career in the UK, first researching and producing educational
programmes before switching to writing drama scripts. She wrote extensively
for flagship BBC shows such as EastEnders, Holby City and Doctors as well
as movies and a comedy drama series for the German market. She has also
written several plays for BBC Radio 3 and Radio 4.
This background stood Anji in good stead to turn her hand to writing educational drama for development, so when
a job came up with the BBC World Service Trust in Cambodia she jumped at the chance to do something different
with her life. She came to Cambodia in March 2005 to write Taste of Life (click BBC logo), a drama seriesdesigned to educate viewers about HIV and AIDS as well as maternal and child health.
Anji soon fell in love with Cambodia and has been living here, pretty much, ever since. But when she first arrived,
she was nervous about exploring alone and there didnt seem to be any tour companies offering day trips or
accompanied excursions. Always keen to find solutions to problems, Anji collaborated with her Cambodian friends
to create her own day trips and detours, which sowed the first seeds of Mango Cambodia as it is today. Having
organised countless group holidays for friends and family over the years, Anji naturally found herself planning trips

for friends who were visiting Cambodia. Inspired by the people and places that had most impressed her, she
created unique itineraries which her visitors loved. In fact, what began as a simple social exercise had such rave
reviews that, in time, it became a natural progression to share the benefits by setting up Mango Cambodia as an
officially registered, fully bonded inbound tour company.
Still writing drama for development, Anji has been steadily building Mango Cambodias reputation, products and
services for nearly four years. She is passionate about Cambodia - its charming people, diverse culture, unique
heritage and stunning natural beauty. Her aim is for Mango Cambodias holidays and detours to touch the lives of
its clients in ways that will both surprise and delight.
Mr. Sophea Pheng
Operations Manager
The eldest of four children, Sophea grew up in Kandal province, where his
father was the village chief until 2007. He started primary school when he
was 6 years old. At that time, his family was very poor - the country had just
emerged from the Khmer Rouge regime, so people in rural communities had
to really struggle to rebuild their lives. Sopheas family did not have enoughfood and he had to work very hard to help out on their farm.
In 1993, he became a student at Tuol Basan secondary school and took his final exam in 1995. There were only
four students out of a hundred who passed the exam and Sophea was one of them! He continued to study until he
achieved his High School certificate and then moved to work and study Phnom Penh, obtaining his university
degree in 2007 - a BSc in IT.
Sophea has recently completed his MBA. He is very popular with Mango clients and particularly enjoys the
occasions when he accompanies them on the Phnom Penh Detour or Good Day, Cambodia. I enjoy my work at
Mango Cambodia very much!!! he says. We are proud of Sopheas accomplishments and see him as playing a
pivotal role in the future of Mango.
Mr. Sophanet Pheng (Phanet)
Office Manager
Phanet comes from a village in Kandal province, about 60 Km from Phnom
Penh city. His father (a farmer) and mother (a midwife) are proud that all four
of their children have gone on to university.
After graduating from school Phanet came to work and study in Phnom
Penh. He recently achieved his degree in Economics.
Phanet is Assistant Operations/Office Manager at Mango Cambodia. He speaks very good English, is charming
and gets on well with the Mango Cambodia team. He is a conscientious worker and enjoys his job, particularlywhen dealing with clients.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
THE VITAL ROLE
OF TOURISM
The magnificent Kingdom of Cambodia is still recovering from its recent tragic history. Things are progressing here
but not as quickly as they might.
Mango Cambodia supports local communities in all destinations and donates learning materials to the schools and
projects visited on tours. We are also actively involved in various specific projects: sponsoring young street
children through school; training young people in life and work skills and sponsoring our staff on various catering,
computer, business and management courses to help further their careers.
Tourism is playing a vital role in helping the country overcome the difficulties of the past and move towards a bright
and positive future. In practicing and promoting truly responsible tourism over the past four years, Mango has seen
encouraging results.
